Little House on the Prairie star Charlotte Stewart has been reflecting on her life and career as the hit show celebrates its 50th anniversary this coming September. Stewart, who played beloved teacher Miss Beadle in the iconic western-historical drama, joined her former cast and crew members at Simi Valley, California, this past weekend for a special three-day festival honoring the milestone event. Speaking to The Sun, the veteran actress recalled her audition for Little House, where she showed up in a tie-dye T-shirt and jeans. “I walked in, and there was Michael Landon [the producer], and I thought to myself, ‘Oh my God, this is really big,'” she shared, “So they said, ‘Are you ready to read?’ And I looked at the producer who was sitting behind this big desk with all these executives around him, and I said, ‘May I sit behind your desk?'” “So he got up and moved,...

Melissa Gilbert had a ready answer when asked why fans of Little House on the Prairie always seem to burst into tears whenever they see her in person.
“Because I do! I think it’s just, you know … the show evokes so much emotion in people and made everybody feel,” Gilbert told the crowd Friday at the three-day Little House on the Prairie Cast Reunion and Festival in Simi Valley, CA. “So when they see us, they have the feels, and then the leftover feels from 50 years ago. Now they’re feeling it again through children and grandchildren. There’s this continuity and sense of family. This is a giant family reunion.”
Thousands of people converged upon Simi Valley’s Rancho Santa Susana Park to remember Little House on the Prairie, the Michael Landon starrer that debuted 50 years ago this year. With the promise to see stars like Gilbert, who played Laura “Half Pint” Ingalls,...

"All great literature is one of two stories; a man goes on a journey or a stranger comes to town." -- Leo Tolstoy
Two of today's hottest shows -- Tracker and Reacher -- are keeping the tradition of the "traveling stranger" alive and well by providing comfort viewing with a kick.
There has always been room on television for the archetype of the helpful loner traveling from town to town.
In the 1960s, James Garner's Maverick featured a wisecracking cowboy poker player with a heart of gold.
That show's campy cousin, The Wild, Wild West, had two Secret Service agents in tight trousers solving cross-country crimes from a swanky steam engine (the original Airstream?).
In the 1970s, The Incredible Hulk put a contemporary spin on the traveling stranger theme, complete with that decade's anxiety over nuclear power.

Mental Hygiene for a Teenage Werewolf By Anthony M. Caro Reviews and reference materials that refer to Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957) as a “campy” film are head-scratching. While the absurd Frankenstein follow-up had unintentional comedic elements, Michael Landon’s portrayal of the adolescent lycanthrope Tony Rivers conveys a dark and tragic tale. There’s little to …

Some of the longest-running game shows of all time have managed to stay entertaining due to their unique formats or charismatic hosts. Shows like Jeopardy! and Family Feud have successfully transitioned to new hosts without losing their popularity. The longest-running game show of all time had an impressive run spanning several decades on air.
The longest-running game shows of all time have one important thing in common. Not only do they offer contestants a chance to win great prizes, with the audience living vicariously through them, but they also remain entertaining for a variety of reasons. This comes from either the format of the shows or the hosts who run the show. Jeopardy! is a great example of a show that offers challenging questions that keep viewers glued to their TVs, but the charisma of former host Alex Trebek added to the appeal, which is why it has lasted for over 50 years.

As one of the most beloved television shows ever produced, Little House on the Prairie can still be seen on TV today, as the show's strong syndication record has kept it afloat for decades. Originally developed by Blanche Hanalis, the series was headlined by former Bonanza star Michael Landon, who directed, wrote, produced, and starred in the bulk of the original series. Running from 1974 to 1982, the original Little House was a delight, focusing on the Ingalls family as they fight to make a life for themselves in the small town of Walnut Grove, Minnesota.

Landing your dream job doesn’t always turn out to be good, as director Christopher Landon suggested on X today, announcing that he’s quit Scream 7. Indeed, the director didn’t mince words, writing that “it was a dream job that turned into a nightmare.” The director is likely referring to the myriad behind-the-scenes issues that seem to be prematurely killing what initially came off as a promising relaunch for the venerable franchise. Back in November, it was announced that breakout star Melissa Barrera, who was leading the franchise, had been fired due to social media posts in the wake of the Israeli-Hamas war that were deemed anti-semitic by some.
Landon, in a staggering honest post to X, initially made his displeasure known right then and there, writing, “This is my statement: Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.“ Only days later, it was announced...

With over 200 episodes and four television specials trailing behind its covered wagon, it's hard to name a single episode of Little House on the Prairie as "the best." Based on the semi-autobiographical Little House book series by the real-life Laura Ingalls Wilder, the television adaptation was known best for its traditional family values, picturesque view of pioneer living, and Michael Landon's trademark vision and charm, but that's not all that made the series great. In fact, because we can't pick just one episode to deem the "best" of the series, we've cheated and picked two.

There hasn't been another television series quite like Little House on the Prairie. Running for eight seasons (plus an additional sequel season) on NBC through the 1970s and into the early '80s, Little House was executive produced, often directed by, and starred Michael Landon as the Ingalls family patriarch. Bridging the gap between being a Western and a Midwestern (if there even is such a thing), the series, just like the books it's based on, has been beloved for decades. But if there was one man who could steal the show from Michael Landon, who appeared in nearly every episode, it would be none other than Johnny Cash.

Hersha Parady, who won the hearts of Little House on the Prairie viewers with her 1977-1980 portrayal of Walnut Grove schoolteacher and Ingalls Family friend Alice Garvey, died yesterday in Norfolk, Virginia, following surgery last month for the brain cancer meningioma. She was 78.
Her death was announced by her son Jonathan Peverall. Parady died in Peverall’s hometown of Norfolk.
In a Facebook post last night, co-star and friend Alison Arngrim, who played the troublemaking Nellie Oleson on Little House, wrote, “Our wild, untameable, talented Hersha has left us. Rest in power.”
Although Parady made her TV debut in 1971 on the series Bearcats! and appeared that decade on Mannix, The Waltons and CBS Afternoon Playhouse, she debuted in her signature role of the Little House teacher in 1977, beginning a three-season run that would end with one of the series’ most shocking and well-remembered installments: The February 4, 1980, episode titled “May We Make Them Proud: Part I.

Hersha Parady, who played schoolteacher Alice Garvey on the beloved show “Little House on the Prairie,” has died after a long struggle with a brain tumor. She was 78.
The actress’ death was first confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter by her son, Jonathan Peverall, who did not immediately respond to messages sent Thursday. Peverall had started a GoFundMe page to help with her medical expenses.
“Hersha, who has always been an active and outgoing woman, is battling a tough medical condition – a brain tumor known as meningioma,” he wrote in July.”This illness has robbed her of her strength, her memory, and sadly, her vibrant personality. She has become largely bedridden, and it is very difficult to see my Mom, who was once full of life and energy, now struggling with basic daily activities.”

Hersha Parady, whose three-season run as Walnut Grove schoolteacher Alice Garvey on Little House on the Prairie came to an unforgettable, dark end for fans of the beloved NBC drama, has died. She was 78.
Parady died Wednesday in the Norfolk, Virginia, home of her son, Jonathan Peverall, he told The Hollywood Reporter. She had been dealing with a brain tumor, and he had set up a GoFundMe page to help with expenses.
Parady and former NFL star Merlin Olsen were introduced as wife and husband Alice and Jonathan Garvey on the Michael Landon-created Little House on the Prairie during the season-four opening episode, “Castoffs,” in September 1977.
On the sixth-season installment “May We Make Them Proud,” which aired as a two-hour episode during a sweeps ratings period in February 1980, Alice races into the School for the Blind, which has caught fire, to save some children inside, including Mary and Adam’s (Melissa Sue Anderson,...

Television has a rich history of cool cowboy characters and actors who bring them to life. It includes Michael Landon, Dan Blocker, Pernell Roberts as the Cartwright brothers in Bonanza and both Chuck Norris and Jared Padalecki in Walker, Texas Ranger. But while there is no shortage of cool on the list of television cowboys, Justified's Timothy Olyphant is number one.
Olyphant has what it takes to remain comfortably atop the list of cool television cowboys for a long time. This is easy to see when fans recall that he's been in the number-one slot since 2004. Olyphant possesses the wiry physique, winning smile, low voice and collected temperament that a cool cowboy requires. He's also got a perfected thousand-yard-stare; nobody wants to be on the other side of a showdown or shootout with Olyphant looking back at them.

When trying to answer the question of what was the saddest episode of Little House on the Prairie, there are a lot of options that pop up. The show had a lot of dark and sad episodes that sometimes seemed out of place in a show that was normally as wholesome as the tales of the Ingalls family. Little House on the Prairie premiered in 1974, an American historical drama series based on the children's novels written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The books were based on her childhood in the American Midwest in the late 1800s. However, for a TV show based on children's novels, Little House never feared going dark.
The main story was about a good, pure family led by Charles Ingalls (I Was A Teenage Werewolf's Michael Landon), someone who raised his family to be God-fearing and well-meaning.

The Emmys have been here before. In 1980, the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists went on strike for three months. That year’s Emmy telecast happened to fall right in the middle of it.
Actors boycotted the ceremony, but for some reason, the TV Academy went ahead with the Emmy telecast anyway. Famously, only one out of 52 nominees attended: Powers Boothe, who said when accepting his trophy for playing cult leader Jim Jones: “This is either the most courageous moment of my career or the stupidest.”
Steve Allen and Dick Clark (both of whom donated their hosting fees to the SAG emergency fund) hosted that year’s ceremony after original hosts Michael Landon, Bob Newhart and Lee Remick bowed out due to the strike. Several well-known Hollywood stars have dabbled in the Western genre, but the Westerns they made were terrible. Westerns were, at one time, as popular as anything in the MCU or Dceu, but eventually stopped being popular by the end of the '70s. At that point, gritty crime dramas and action movies took precedence, and Westerns slowly began to fade into obscurity. These days, a new Western movie comes out every few years, with various actors strapping on a pair of six-shooters to try to recapture a little of the romanticism of the American frontier and the adventure of the Wild West.
Some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including icons like Harrison Ford and Johnny Depp, have tried to recapture the magic of Westerns to no avail. Ford took to Westerns early in his career, while other stars, like Robert Duvall, revisited them after a long one spent dabbling...

‘Little House on the Prairie’: Alison Arngrim Required a Stunt Person During a Certain Type of Scene
Nellie Oleson was much prissier than her early character foil, Laura Ingalls, on Little House on the Prairie. But she still knew her way around a horse barn. At their core, almost every character in Taylor Sheridan's sweeping Neo-Western "Yellowstone" has only one singular purpose, and that is to protect the Dutton family ranch to ensure the cowboy way of life never goes extinct. While the Duttons themselves are highly dysfunctional, they unite under one cause that's been passed down from generation to generation. They can't go it all alone though, and the extended family of the Duttons consists of a hard-working group of ranch hands and misfits that keep up with the daily operations of the ranch. They break the horses, they drive the cattle, and, occasionally, they may be called upon to engage in a little murder and mayhem all in the name of protecting what's theirs.

Bonanza remains the second-longest-running American western TV series of all time. The show’s unique storylines and characters made it a success, but the memorable theme song also played a part in the series’ popularity. The Bonanza theme song that introduced each episode changed before and during the show’s run, with one version including lyrics written and sung by one of its stars, Lorne Greene.

Though actors typically portray many roles throughout their careers, they can also be defined by one or two pivotal parts that become their legacy (whether they like it or not). Such is the case with Pernell Roberts.
The actor was featured in numerous projects from the ’60s until the ’80s, particularly on TV. But Roberts is best known for two major characters over the course of his lifetime.
The TV shows were a substantial contributor to Roberts’ net worth. He left behind a small fortune at the time of his death in 2010. Here’s more about the actor and his legacy:
Pernell Roberts was best known for his roles on ‘Bonanza’ and ‘Trapper John M.D.’
Roberts has more than 100 credits to his name. But he’s best known for two roles, which also happen to be the lengthiest.

Bonanza and its cast members quickly became a fan favorites when the show aired on September 12, 1959. One of NBC‘s longest-running western TV series went on for 14 seasons and over 430 episodes. Although the stars of the series became popular, the music, specifically the Bonanza theme song, stole the show.
Its twangy rhythm distinctly marked the opening credits. While the tune changed throughout the 14 seasons the show aired, it was always recognizable.

Gunsmoke was one of the most popular television shows ever to hit the air. The network, CBS, knew what it had on its hands after its 1955 premiere and milked it for 20 seasons before suddenly canceling it in 1975. The Western genre later died off, as its wave of popularity never quite returned to form. Here’s a list of five other vintage television shows to dig into if Gunsmoke was your jam.

Little House on the Prairie first aired back in 1974, but it’s still a hit among many TV viewers. Here are four reasons we love the show.

If you’re looking for a show the whole family can watch, look no further than Little House on the Prairie. It’s a wholesome program with interesting plotlines. You won’t have to worry about covering your little one’s eyes or staying on high alert for foul language.
Melissa Francis (she played Cassandra Ingalls) says Michael Landon taught her about the importance of hard work and being responsible. She tells the Today show’s Hoda Kotb and Kathy Lee Gifford she’s grateful for the lessons she learned.

Christopher Landon is the reigning king of the horror-comedy, having directed time-loop chiller “Happy Death Day” (and its underrated follow-up) and “Freaky,” the only body-swapping slasher movie you’ll ever need. His latest, “We Have a Ghost” on Netflix, is his attempt at a more family-friendly hybrid.
The new movie follows a family (led by Anthony Mackie) who move into a house haunted by a schlubby specter (David Harbour). What follows is a wild bouillabaisse of different tones and genres, as it flits through being – at various points and sometimes all at once – a social media satire, a murder mystery and, somehow, a spy thriller.
In some ways, though, “We Have a Ghost” feels like the movie Landon has been working toward his entire career.
Landon has always been interested in the cheeky mixing-and-matching of styles. One of his first sold (and produced) screenplays was for “Disturbia” back in 2007.

Christopher Landon has quietly established himself as one of the most original voices in the horror genre. Adopting a slightly campy, fun-loving approach, Landon wrote and directed a series of movies for Blumhouse that are beloved by fans: Happy Death Day and its sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, and the underrated Freaky. Now, working with a much bigger budget, Landon’s been able to stretch out with his latest film for Netflix, We Have a Ghost, which stars David Harbour as a ghost haunting a house owned by Anthony Mackie and his family.
Unlike most other haunted house movies, Harbour’s silent ghost, Ernest, has a heart of gold and becomes BFFs with Jahi Winston’s Kevin, the family’s long-ignored son who comes into his own, protecting Ernest from his somewhat opportunistic father. Eventually, Kevin and Ernest try to unravel the amnesia-stricken ghost’s past in a family adventure...

After writing five “Paranormal Activity” movies, directing one (2014’s “The Marked Ones”), and creating inventive new mythologies with “Happy Death Day” and “Freaky,” “We Have a Ghost” is a decidedly different kind of horror project from filmmaker Christopher Landon: you know, for kids. To be more accurate, it’s for families — the kind of story that’s not just scary, but funny, and heartfelt as well, like “E.T the Extra-Terrestrial” and other Amblin movies of the 1980s. “They showed kids in peril and that the world is a dark place, but that you come out on the other side of it,” Landon tells Variety.
“We Have a Ghost,” which premieres Feb. 24 on Netflix, was also made for Landon’s own family — not simply his two boys, who are slowly advancing to the age where they can start watching his more terrifying creations, but his late father, actor Michael Landon,...

Filmmaker Christopher Landon loves a good scare. But while the man behind such contemporary horror hits as five (!!) of the “Paranormal Activity” films, “Happy Death Day,” “Freaky,” and “Viral” is best associated with his terrifying stuff, he’s got other tricks and treats on his mind.
Landon’s latest film, the Netflix outing “We Have a Ghost,” which he wrote and directed, smacks of horror — it follows a family, including Anthony Mackie, Erica Ash, Jahi Di’Allo Winston, and Niles Fitch, who move into a new house and discover it comes complete with a ghost, played by David Harbour — it’s also a bit more family-friendly, certainly funny, and driven by ideas about what happens when something gets big on the internet. It’s another evolution for Landon, who seems more than ready to subvert expectations when it comes to what he’s interested in making.

The Little House on the Prairie cast seemed to be the picture-perfect family onscreen. However, there were reportedly a few clashes behind the scenes. Things weren’t always as they seemed on the hit TV series. Here are four behind-the-scenes feuds that took place on the Little House set.
1. Michael Landon and Karen Grassle Karen Grassle and Michael Landon | NBCU Photo Bank
Karen Grassle (she played Caroline Ingalls) had a disagreement with the late Michael Landon (he played Charles Ingalls). When it was time to renew her contract, she wanted to get paid more. The show was a success, and she felt she should be compensated accordingly. However, in her book Bright Lights, Prairie Dust, Grassle says things didn’t go smoothly.
According to Grassle, Landon and some of the cast and crew became cold toward her during the contract negotiations. Although Grassle and Landon had a strained relationship, they made amends.

Some TV shows feel like they exist out of time. Regardless of when they first aired, they always seem to be in rotation and, often, in syndication in multiple places. Such is the case with the long-running Western series Bonanza. Still, despite the show’s longevity, star Dan Blocker could tell its days were numbered by a certain point into its 14-year run.

In 1976, he starred as the younger version of Michael Landon’s character in NBC’s Landon-directed made-for-tv movie The Loneliest Runner, playing a boy who loves to run. He followed that with the title role in the network’s drama series James at 15 (later known as James at 16) that launched in 1977 and ran for 20 episodes.
Kerwin co-starred alongside David Soul and James Mason in the 1979 television horror miniseries Salem’s Lot, based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name. The project earned three Emmy nominations.
The youngest of five brothers, Kerwin was born in Newport Beach, California, on Nov. 6, 1960.

In a film featuring a (in some cases literal) murderer’s row of movie-star performances, the “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” character that has received the most ink since its Netflix premiere on December 23 is Derol, the Corona-toting slacker who briefly appears in only a handful of scenes — but steals every one of them. Played by Noah Segan, who has appeared in every one of Rian Johnson’s films to date, Derol has taken on a life of his own, becoming a favorite even on the periphery of the murder-mystery action, and perhaps because of that, a meme.

Cliff Emmich, the fun-loving character actor who made his mark in Payday, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Halloween II and Little House on the Prairie, has died. He was 85.
Emmich died Monday at his Valley Village home in Los Angeles after a long battle with lung cancer, his rep Steve Stevens told The Hollywood Reporter.
In perhaps his most well-known role, Emmich played the driver Chicago, who steered the Cadillac sedan with Rip Torn‘s hard-living honky tonk singer Maury Dann in the backseat, in Payday (1973).
In Michael Cimino‘s Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974), Emmich portrayed the Western Union security guard with a porn fetish who is attracted to the long-legged, dress-wearing Jeff Bridges. He played another security guard, one who falls victim to a hammer wielded by Michael Myers, in Halloween II (1981).

It seems that high profile werewolf movies are in short supply these days, doesn’t it? When you’re talking horror movies, there’s plenty of zombies to be had, vampires aren’t going anywhere, and slasher films will always come back into fashion.
But werewolves? They’re not so lucky. Maybe it’s because they seem to require a little more of a budget, and some proper special effects wizardry to make those transformations really pop. CGI werewolves just won’t cut it. And then there’s always the question of just how different you can really make any given werewolf story from the classics of yore. Marvel’s Werewolf by Night just did something really cool, but that’s a TV special and not really a feature film.
