For 50 years, Saturday Night Live has been a catchphrase factory, churning out funny turns of phrase that get repeated ad nauseam in middle-school cafeterias and corporate team-building retreats. That’s the problem with catchphrases — one that makes you laugh when you first hear it might make you throttle someone when it’s repeated for the 10,000th time.
Here are the five overused SNL catchphrases that have caused the most forehead veins to throb…
1 More Cowbell!
“More cowbell” has made lives miserable from everyone to fans at sports arenas to Christopher Walken to the members of Blue Öyster Cult. Will Ferrell told Jimmy Fallon he went to see Walken years later in a play. “And he’s like, ‘You know, you’ve ruined my life. People during the curtain call bring cowbells and ring them.’”
As for Blue Öyster Cult, the oft-repeated sketch forced the band to change up their live shows.

Legendary film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert were known for their passionate discussions about movies, whether they were raving about arthouse offerings like My Dinner with Andre or fiercely debating the artistic merits of Home Alone 3.
But what about TV?
Well, apart from that time that they reviewed an episode of Saturday Night Live during the episode, the famous duo didn’t really discuss TV shows. But that all changed thanks to one very special animated series: The Critic. Al Jean and Mike Reiss’ underrated primetime cartoon chronicled the life of a portly New York film critic and TV host Jay Sherman (voiced by Jon Lovitz) who routinely trashed Hollywood blockbusters such as Scent of a Wolfman and Dennis the Menace II Society.
So, naturally, Siskel and Ebert took note of The Critic. They then took the highly unusual step of reviewing it on a 1994 episode of their show,...

Actor Gilles Marini blasted into the public consciousness in 2008 with his role in block-buster film “Sex and The City 2” as Samantha’s neighbour. He has also appeared in numerous prime-time shows such as Ugly Betty and Dirty Sexy Money amongst others. He has recently secured a permanent role in the hit show, Brothers and Sisters.
Gilles believes in using his celebrity for good, saying ‘The small amount of power that we have in this business – it would be silly not to do something positive for the world…. I would not want to do this job at all if you don’t at least do that’.
After losing his father to cancer at a young age, Gilles has become an active supporter of numerous cancer charities. These include the Jackson Memorial Foundation, which supports International Kids Fund and Holtz Children’s Hospital, the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund and the Carol M.

This article contains mild spoilers for "The Simpsons" season 36 episode "Desperately Seeking Lisa."
"The Simpsons" season 36 is well underway, and the longest-running American animated show is still going strong. Sure, it may not have an all-time best episode airing weekly and it is no longer revolutionizing comedy and animation as we know it, but it is still impressive that "The Simpsons" is delivering entertaining episodes after so many years. Also impressive is that the animated sitcom can still deliver cool new bits of lore for Springfield and its surroundings, like how Sideshow Bob is now wealthy after starting a rake business or revealing how Homer manages to mess up at his job without causing a nuclear meltdown every day.
Similarly, the third episode of season 36 of "The Simpsons," titled "Desperately Seeking Lisa," has a blink-and-you'll-miss-it Easter egg teasing the in-universe return of a fan-favorite musical gag.

Since its beginning in 1975, Saturday Night Live has excelled at political impressions. They've been around for every Presidential election for decades, not to mention scores of political figures who have come and gone. Sometimes, you get an actor doing an okay impression, but other times, SNL crafts an impression so huge that it becomes a national sensation.
The best impressions are so famous that they can overwhelm the actual political figure being lampooned. Often, these politicians will pop up on SNL to confront their imposter and give them a stamp of approval. Not all of them are top-notch (their various takes on Donald Trump have been tricky), but these rank as the best SNL political impersonations over the last 50 years, and how you can always count on the show to nail some hilarious takes on famous political figures past and present.

The general consensus on "The Simpsons" is that it started to go downhill somewhere between seasons 7 and 10. Some fans will argue that the first ten years are the real golden age, while others will point to season 3 to 7 as the real sweet spot. Either way, almost all fans will surely agree that "The Simpsons" stopped being good at some point.
For those superfans who remember buying the DVD box sets just to listen intently to the commentary tracks (this writer may or may not be included in that group), you might recall the season 10 episode "Monty Can't Buy Me Love" as a real hinge moment for the series. Dana Carvey is having a blast now that he’s once again an unofficial cast member of Saturday Night Live. He’s appeared on every episode in Season 50 so far, not only breaking out his Joe Biden impression (which seems to have caught on) but hamming it up in other sketches as well. While he’s in the Big Apple, it’s a great time to catch up with old friends, he told David Spade on the Superfly podcast. “I could have a boozy lunch or a boozy dinner with some friend every day.”
One guy who’s never been known to turn down a boozy lunch? Jon Lovitz, a comic whose tenure at SNL largely overlapped with Carvey’s. He popped up at 30 Rock for the Ariana Grande rehearsals, a visit that went longer than promised.
“Hello?” said Spade, imitating Lovitz’s nasal lilt. “I’m available for sketches.

Though it’s something of a backhanded paean to its eponymous city in question, the most enjoyable element to “Lost & Found in Cleveland” is its locations, locations, locations — cinematographer Davon Slininger’s widescreen images provide an appealing selective tour of a burg the film presents as quaintly lagging well behind the times. Otherwise, this slick if uninspired first feature for actors turned writer-directors Marisa Guterman and Keith Gerchak offers a pleasant-enough ensemble seriocomedy that straddles the terrains of Richard Curtis and Christopher Guest, without approaching either’s high points. The Newport Beach Fest world premiere’s familiar faces and story beats seem best suited to home viewing.
An opening montage to the retro pop of Bobby Darin singing “Artificial Flowers” — an incongruously brassy, “Mack the Knife”-like arrangement of a depressing slum-tragedy lyric from 1960 Broadway musical “Tenderloin” — introduces the characters, as well as a sense that this midwestern metropolis’ growth stalled some decades ago.

Some movies take circuitous routes to production. It all, as we like to say, starts on the page, and sometimes all you have on that page is a pitch -- a basic idea centered on a killer hook. And that pitch can go through various permutations as different producers, writers, directors, and stars become attached and unattached. Take "Bad Boys" for instance. Long before Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer teamed up-and-coming filmmaker Michael Bay with the then unproven-at-the-box-office duo of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, the project was intended to be a broad two-hander comedy starring "Saturday Night Live" veterans Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz. Hard to imagine a four-film-and-counting franchise blossoming out of that.

Dana Carvey is revealing how he ended up playing a 100-year-old version of Jennifer Coolidge during a Saturday Night Live sketch last week.
The comedian, who has been portraying Joe Biden since season 50 of the NBC sketch comedy show kicked off last month, recently said on Superfly, the spinoff series of his and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast, that he has to learn his impression of the beloved actress last minute.
“They threw it at me Thursday night,” Carvey, who was originally a castmember on SNL from 1986 to 1993, said. “They explained to me that the character was like a Snow White thing, that my Jennifer Coolidge had been trapped in the mirror for 100’s of years.”
The sketch titled “Maybelline” saw Chloe Fineman’s Jennifer Coolidge getting help putting on “Maybelline Super Stay Long Wear Liquid Lip Color” from the Jennifer Coolidge reflection in her mirror, played by host Ariana Grande.

Dana Carvey has learned to remain nimble every week on Saturday Night Live Season 50.
Two weeks prior, he thought on his feet for an unplanned ice cream shenanigan featuring Maya Rudolph, and last week, the Joe Biden impersonator was tapped as a last-minute Jennifer Coolidge doppelganger for a sketch featuring Chloe Fineman and Ariana Grande. It was a gig he relished, even if he perhaps didn’t understand its absurdist elements.
“It was kind of an acid-y, esoteric sketch,” Carvey said on a recent episode of his Superfly podcast co-hosted with David Spade. “I still don’t quite understand it, but that was fun.”
He recounted that he had never appeared in drag before, not counting his previous SNL appearance as Church Lady. “They threw it at me Thursday night, and I just thought, in my age group, I never really was in drag because Church Lady, whatever you think she is,...

Maybe Matt Groening was saying “boo-urns.”
Back in the 1990s, comedy shows collaborating to make crowd-pleasing crossover episodes was all the rage. Friends and Mad About You connected their comedy universes via Phoebe’s twin sister Ursula. Steve Urkel from Family Matters crashed the Tanner household in a Full House episode. The Jeffersons appeared on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air twice — that’s double the visits of Will’s dad. While these kinds of very special episodes may not have been the most artistically inspired publicity stunts, these marketing department’s delights certainly weren’t anything worthy of shame or derision, let alone a full-scale press tour from either show’s creator as they disowned the project like it’s a nefarious failson who committed treason against the crown. That is, unless you ask Groening.

Robert Downey Jr. is currently at the peak of Hollywood fame but he had a humble beginning in the industry. He kickstarted his career on Broadway as a teen actor and actively pursued a mainstream film role since 1983. His first lead role came only in 1987 with the movie The Pick-up Artist. During this period, he became part of the new, younger cast hired for Saturday Night Live in 1985.

While SNL is a career starter for many talented artists, Downey Jr.’s appearance in the show is not something that often comes up in discussions. It is because that ‘Downey Jr. season’ was one of the worst seasons of the show. Most of the cast, including the Iron Man actor, was replaced after that season.

Lots of comics have beef with other comics but how many can claim multiple physical fights with funny co-stars?
That’s why we have to take off our hats to Chevy Chase, the guy who made Chris Columbus flee National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, scared off super-fan Kevin Smith from a Fletch revival and had his shoulder dislocated in a tussle with Community co-star Joel McHale. Chase is also the undisputed king of Saturday Night Live beef, angering generations of comedians with his a-hole behavior.
Here are five times Chase royally pissed off SNL cast members during show week…
1 John Belushi
According to Saturday Night: A Backstage History of Saturday Night Live, one of the show’s writers noticed that “within two-thirds of the first year, it began to seem that Chevy was more worried about his next cold opening than about being part of the team.”
John Belushi also noticed.

Have you ever witnessed a rollercoaster that makes the stomach plummet and the heart soar, all in the same breath? Well, Charlie Sheen’s love life mirrors exactly that—a thrilling, unpredictable adventure with twists & turns that defy the odds. Movies always go through a number of changes between an idea in the shower to streaming from your couch, whether minor (your protagonist now wears leather jackets instead of tweed suits) to major (he’s also a wild stunt man instead of a quiet professor). It’s not uncommon, for example, to lighten up some dark source material for a broader audience, so you know when the opposite occurs — a comedy becomes a heavy drama or high-stakes thriller — some choices were made.

It started as Dark Star (which itself started as John Carpenter’s USC master’s thesis), a comedy featuring an alien very obviously made out of a beach ball. “I went away from Dark Star...

According to regular Adam Sandler co-star Nick Swardson, getting a role in one of the Sandman’s movies is roughly equivalent to him calling you up to join a game of pick-up basketball. (Sandler might do that too.) Take, for example, the time Swardson was cast in Just Go With It alongside Jennifer Aniston.
“Sandler called me, I remember exactly where I was,” Swardson told David Spade and Dana Carvey on their Fly on the Wall podcast. “I was at Baby Blues BBQ in Venice, and Sandler calls me and he goes, ‘Hey, what are you doing?’ And I go, ‘I’m having dinner. Bennett is just the latest SNL star to find his way into the Marvel and DC cinematic universes, too. Here are other SNL vets who suited up for super action…
1 Robert Downey Jr.
The undisputed king of this list, Downey spent a tortured year as an SNL cast member when he was only 21. “I learned so much in that year about what I wasn’t,” he told the Off-Camera Show’s Sam Jones. “I was not somebody who was going to do impressions. I was somebody who was very ill-suited for rapid-fire sketch comedy.”

Other than acute behind-the-scenes anxiety, one of Saturday Night Live’s longest-running traditions is the “Five-Timers Club,” a prestigious clique for celebrities who have hosted the show at least five times.
But it turns out it’s all a lie. Wake up sheeple!
The Five-Timers Club obviously began as a joke, part of Tom Hanks’ opening monologue during his fifth SNL appearance in 1990. The mere suggestion that hosting SNL five times was a benchmark worthy of a membership card, a luxurious robe and access to “one of the most exclusive clubs in the world” was meant to be laughable. I mean, the first sketch literally finds Jon Lovitz taking lunch orders and throwing out Ralph Nader.
According to Robert Smigel, the inspiration for the sketch, which he co-wrote for Conan O’Brien, was Hanks’ impression of Lorne Michaels waxing poetically about what it’s like to host SNL each time. “I...

Say this for Saturday Night Live — if performers don’t have the goods, they don’t stick around for long. A number of talented comics didn’t get asked back for even a second season, including future stars Sarah Silverman, Jenny Slate and Ben Stiller. But just because comics are good enough to earn multiple seasons doesn’t mean they can’t overstay their welcome. Here are four SNL performers who milked the show for all it was worth…
1 Kenan Thompson
Hear me out. Clearly, Thompson is an SNL Hall-of-Famer, logging more episodes and more sketches than anyone else in the show’s history. Bravo! But at this point, what does Thompson have left to prove?

Thompson rarely develops recurring characters like Diondre Cole these days. Instead, he supports other cast members with the greatest comic reactions in the history of Studio 8H. A steady hand is always welcome,...

“You’ll see it! You’ll see it under this big W. You can’t miss it! A big, big, W!” And that’s just what Eddie Murphy is hoping to get with his planned remake of 1963 ensemble comedy classic It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. He has even started lining up the cast, dropping Martin Lawrence into the fold in the early stages.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Murphy said, “I got this other idea for something with Martin. I’ve been developing it for years. Did you ever see a movie It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World? Well, I got a script, it will be delivered any minute now written by Jez Butterworth [Dial of Destiny, Ford v Ferrari] and I’m trying to do a remake of that movie.” He added, “It’s one of my favorite movies of all time and if I do it, if the script turns out right,...

You think Pete Davidson was young when he started on Saturday Night Live? He was 20, practically a grizzled veteran. So was been-there-done-that Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Eddie Murphy was 19 years old, but that still made him an experienced pro compared to Anthony Michael Hall, who got a job on SNL in 1985 before he was old enough to vote. The show was on practically past his bedtime.
“How do you get on Saturday Night Live at 17?” wondered Dana Carvey this week on the Fly on the Wall podcast. “Beat Eddie Murphy by two years!”
As it turns out, Hall didn’t even have to audition. “Eddie was a hero of mine, and I was literally in my mother’s apartment two years before watching him every weekend. I loved it,” Hall told Carvey and David Spade. Then the young actor killed it in John Hughes' comedies Sixteen Candles and Breakfast Club. “After I had done those films,...

“Let’s face it, I had a bad script,” director Michael Bay said on the commentary track of his debut feature film, Bad Boys. Bay isn’t wrong. Bad Boys relies on buddy comedy tropes already established in 1974’s Freebie and the Bean and 1982’s 48 Hrs., complete with nonsense plot points. “But I had real comic talent in my two stars.” Bay of course means Martin Lawrence and Will Smith. Drawn from the popular sitcoms Martin and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Lawrence and Smith saved the movie from the clunky script with their easy chemistry and comic timing.
At one point, however, Bad Boys had two very different stars in mind with a comic chemistry unlike that of Lawrence and Smith.

This article contains major spoilers for "Bad Boys: Ride or Die."
What does it mean to be a Bad Boy? That's the unasked question lingering over the "Bad Boys" franchise, but the question as well as the answer isn't as clear cut as it appears. After all, the title could be ironic, especially when Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz were originally slated to star in the first film. By the time the project morphed into Michael Bay's first feature starring then-tv sitcom stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, the title became a mission statement, where the film was going to (and eventually did) prove that these funnymen could be genuinely badass.
After "Bad Boys II," 2020's "Bad Boys For Life" appeared to be a swan song for Detectives Mike Lowry (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) as they faced the ravages of age as well as their checkered pasts, eventually...

The original Bad Boys debuted nearly 30 years ago, and even with a first-time director, two stars untested at the box office and a scramble to finish the script, nothing could handcuff the film’s success.
After a string of hits that included Flashdance, Beverly Hills Cop and Top Gun, producing partners Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer began developing a buddy-cop script from George Gallo (Midnight Run) called Bulletproof Heart. Saturday Night Live standouts Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz were eyed to star, but Will Smith and Martin Lawrence ultimately landed the leads. (In 2013, Arsenio Hall told The Hollywood Reporter about his regret over having turned down Smith’s part: “Sometimes I made bad choices.”)
At the time, Smith and Lawrence were starring on the sitcoms The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Martin, respectively, and neither had led a studio movie. Making his feature directorial debut was Michael Bay, known for music videos and commercials.

“Freeze mother bitches!” What’s the all-time best buddy cop movie ever made? 48 Hrs? Lethal Weapon? Beverly Hills Cop? Rush Hour? The Nice Guys? In terms of story and dramatic action, any one of these titles warrants serious consideration. But when it comes to the onscreen rapport and natural chemistry between two stars in a buddy cop movie, it’s hard to beat 1995’s Bad Boys – the directorial debut of the divisive filmmaker Michael Bay. Sure, Bay has earned a rightful rep as a bold and boisterous music-video director turned filmmaker who favors big, dumb, pyrotechnic excesses over quality cinematic storytelling.
However, Bay does deserve at least a modicum of credit for pairing the comedic talents of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence together as Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett – two immensely likable Miami narcotics officers who trade crackling banter and witty one-liners whose onscreen partnership drives the engagement and entertainment level.

Just as no history of Saturday Night Live would be complete without mention of The Groundlings, it would be impossible to tell the story of The Groundlings without talking about the role SNL has played in their continued success. Which is exactly what the legendary improv and sketch comedy theater intends to do when it hosts a star-studded panel later this month.
On Friday, June 28, The Groundlings will welcome back a handful of alums who have made it big both on that Los Angeles stage as well as in the hallowed halls of Studio 8H.
The panel, which will be moderated by current Main Company member Josh Duvendeck, will bring together what the official calendar listing describes as “legends of SNL and The Groundlings,” including original Not Ready For Prime-Time Player Laraine Newman, Jon Lovitz, Cheri Oteri, Chris Parnell, Julia Sweeney, Taran Killam, and Will Forte (who will beam in...

When Saturday Night Live began, it wasn’t even called Saturday Night Live. That honor belonged to a rival variety show hosted by Howard Cosell that launched the same year on ABC primetime. Hence why the young, hungry, and immensely talented sketch comedians assembled in 1975 were dubbed the “Not Ready for Primetime Players.”
That earliest and now quasi-mythical first class of SNL alumni remain the only ones to hold that title. Perhaps this is because the joke stopped working after many of them proved more than capable of carrying a primetime television series. In fact, most of them went on to have successful careers on TV, the Broadway stage, and for the precious and most spectacular few… in the movies.
Ever since Chevy Chase exited SNL after its first season, the series has been viewed—sometimes to creator and producer Lorne Michaels and NBC executives’ consternation—as a launchpad for movie stardom.

Have you ever stopped to marvel at the wonders human talent can achieve? Take Tom Hanks’ example, whose popularity stems from his roles in major blockbusters like Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump, and Saving Private Ryan, making him one of Hollywood’s top actors. But that is not the only thing the 67-year-old is good at; he is also a terrific voice actor and is equally adept at comedy and impersonation.

Comedian Jon Lovitz raised questions about the lack of outrage from Hollywood actors over the pro-Palestinian protests taking place at college campuses across the United States.
In an interview with Fox News host Jesse Watters on Jesse Waters Primetime, Lovitz, who is Jewish and outspoken about his conservative beliefs, expressed surprise that other actors weren’t being more vocal.
“People say, ‘Why are you speaking up? Why aren’t other people in Hollywood, who are way bigger names than me, not saying anything?'” Lovitz said. “And my answer is, I don’t know. I think either they’re afraid, or they’re afraid they’re going to lose… that it’ll hurt their business.”
Protests that demand a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas conflict have erupted on multiple college campuses in recent days and resulted in arrests, student suspensions and heightened police presence.

Lorne Michaels is an expert at celebrating the legacy of “Saturday Night Live.” The show’s creator has produced variety specials for the NBC program’s 15th anniversary, 25th anniversary and 40th anniversary, so the upcoming 50th season should have a highly entertaining spectacle. Nothing less than a three-hour event would be expected, but how else should “SNL” celebrate the golden anniversary season, which would begin in the autumn of 2024 and continue through May, 2025?
Here is our exciting, fun suggestion for a way to go above and beyond for the live special. Over the course of a 20-22 episode season, NBC would certainly have almost every episode featuring the current cast along with hot guest hosts and musical guests. However, for the other five episodes spread out over several months, devote an entire 90 minutes to each previous decade. Invite back the biggest cast members from a decade along with well-known guest hosts and music stars.

So what can be said about Andy Dick that the paparazzi and nearly every Judge from West Virginia to Los Angeles hasn’t already said? He was once a rising star in the comedy world with lovably nerdy characters on hit TV series before his demons grabbed a hold of him and took him down an over 25 year path of endless headlines with his name often times preceding the word “arrested.” In those years, he has compiled more Mug Shots than Head Shots and went from Star on the Rise to Registered Sex Offender. Yeah, I don’t know how else to say this other than: Wtf Happened to Andy Dick?!
But as always we must begin at the beginning and the beginning began on his birthday, December 21, 1965 in Charleston, South Carolina. After graduating high school in the suburbs of Illinois, Andy would study at the famed Second City and...

Fox Nation wants to get in on the streaming comedy boom that has largely been fomented by Netflix.
The Fox News streaming outlet plans to turn January into a comedy-themed month, one that is led by two stand-up concerts featuring Fox’s own talent as well as a new series about the history of drinking hosted by Dan Aykroyd and other alumni from “Saturday Night Live.”
Fox News may be known for snarky one-liners about liberals and Democrats, but it’s less known for comedy stylings, even with the satirical Greg Gutfeld leading a primetime program at 10 p.m. But Fox Nation, once largely seeded with programming that tackled news and politics, has been tilting at lifestyle and documentary programming for months. A month at Fox Nation might offer docu-series about national landmarks and parklands, or a suite of Clint Eastwood movies, all part of a bid to lure conservative...

Are Thomas and Juliet better together or apart?
That relationship quandary was at the heart of Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 17, and it made for a couple of entertaining cases, one comedic, one dramatic.
Higgins had no one but herself to blame for what was to transpire.
On yet another day beginning at La Mariana, Rick and T.C. were fawning like schoolgirls over their rekindled romances with Suzy and Mahina, respectively.
This set Juliet to pondering: Did she and Thomas spend too much time together?
This is a question with which couples who work and live together must navigate, so it's relevant to many viewers.
Magnum correctly saw Higgins' query as a trap. Fortunately, circumstances quickly gave him an out, as the work partners had two cases with which to deal.
Juliet should have been careful what she wished for, as she ended up with Jin.
For once, Jin...
