Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón has made Oscar history. The titular Emilia Pérez star was just nominated for Best Actress, making her the first openly transgender performer ever nominated in the category. She stars in the musical as a Mexican drug lord who undergoes a gender transition but can’t fully escape her past.
This nomination is historic, but it didn’t come as a surprise. Beginning at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, Gascón and costars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz were jointly named Best Actress. Emilia Pérez was then acquired by Netflix, which released it in theaters on Nov. 1 and on its streaming platform on Nov. 13.
Since then, the film has been enthusiastically embraced by awards groups. It received 10 Golden Globe nominations, the most ever for a comedy or musical, including one for Gascón. It went on to win four of those awards, including the top prize for best film.

What do Kim Novak, Jim Carrey, John Turturro, and the late Donald Sutherland all have in common? Well, aside from being acclaimed actors, these stars have never (we repeat: never) been nominated for an Academy Award. And that crime is now being celebrated by the annual anti-awards season festival, hosted by the Museum of the Moving Image.
The beloved museum announced its third iteration of the popular “Snubbed” screening series, which reexamines films that have been overlooked by the Academy. The 2025 theme is centered on actors and titled “Snubbed Forever: Great Actors, No Nominations.” The program will run February 1 through March 9, and feature 21 films starring actors who have never been nominated for an Oscar.
Highlights include Kim Novak in the enduring “Vertigo,” John Turturro and John Goodman in “Barton Fink,” Rita Hayworth in “The Lady from Shanghai,” Jim Carrey in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” and Danny DeVito in “Batman Returns.

Men in suits of armor. Courtly romance. Raging bouts of plague and pillaging. All these and more are the hallmarks of a good old-fashioned medieval movie. So many of our most enduring legends have their start in the Middle Ages, from King Arthur and Knights of the Round Table to Robin Hood, and for good reason -- their classic tales of adventure and noble battles for justice have won over audiences for hundreds of years.
Although adventures are never in short supply, whether our heroes are off fighting in the Crusades, waging a seemingly endless war in France over the right to rule France, or battling smaller tyrannies on the home front, films set in medieval times aren't just limited to the action genre. 2006 was a good year for Denzel Washington on the big screen, because he starred in two high-grossing, high-quality thrillers: "Deja Vu" and "Inside Man." Just as "Deja Vu" was "Vertigo" as a time-traveling action movie, "Inside Man" was director Spike Lee's 21st century update on Sidney Lumet's "Dog Day Afternoon."
Written by Richard Gerwitz, "Inside Man" follows a hostage situation during a robbery at a Manhattan bank. Washington plays NYPD hostage negotiator Detective Keith Frazier, squaring off against the robbers' leader, Dalton Russell (Clive Owen). The story didn't begin with Lee (Ron Howard was in talks to direct "Inside Man" first), but he made it his own. "Inside Man" is definitely more of a crowd pleaser than something like "Do The Right Thing," as seen by it also being Lee's highest-grossing film to date, but it's absolutely a Spike Lee joint.

Few filmmakers had a better 1970s than Sidney Lumet. While he was more prolific than most of the decade's top directors, knocking out 11 movies over a 10-year span, and did find time to helm one of the worst musicals in motion picture history (a badly bungled adaptation of "The Wiz"), when Lumet got ahold of the right material, he made classics like "Serpico," "Dog Day Afternoon," and "Network."
There isn't a more electric movie in Lumet's oeuvre than "Dog Day Afternoon." Based on a true story, the 1975 critical and commercial hit centers on a bank robbery in Brooklyn carried out by Sonny Wortzik, an amateur crook desperate to pay for his lover's gender-affirming surgery. When the heist quickly goes south, Sonny and his associates find themselves stuck holding hostages while cops swarm the building. The defiant Sonny scrambles to negotiate...

More often than not, fantasy movies include an element of romance in their stories, as these two genres easily go hand in hand. Since the aspects of fantasy that make it otherworldly, like magic and mystery, are used to reflect real-life struggles and topics, it's natural that love and relationships are touched upon as well. However, this doesn't mean that every movie ends happily for its central couple, as fantasy is just as filled with violence and tragedy as it is magic and goodness. This makes it even more exciting when the lovers do get a happily-ever-after.
The best fantasy romance movies ever made are notable for their stories and visuals but are often elevated to classic status thanks to the performances. The Nightmare Before Christmas tells the story of Jack Skellington (voiced by Chris Sarandon) and his plan to “improve” Halloween in his own way, and thanks to this, he achieved what a classic 67-year-old character couldn’t. In 1993, Tim Burton brought the perfect story for Halloween and Christmas in the stop-motion animation movie The Nightmare Before Christmas. Directed by Henry Selick with a story by Tim Burton, The Nightmare Before Christmas takes the audience into a fantasy world where each major holiday has its own world. In Halloween Town, Jack Skellington is the Pumpkin King, but he’s getting tired of this.
One day, while wandering, Jack comes across the doors to the other holidays and is fascinated by Christmas Town. Jack becomes determined to improve Christmas in a Halloween-like way, but his plan gets out of control when the boogeyman himself, Oogie Boogie (Ken Page), takes Santa Claus with him.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the movies mentioned in this articleThere aren't many names you can associate with the world of horror more than the great Stephen King. The Portland, Maine-born author's work has been adapted into various TV shows and movies, and his writing isn't showing many signs of slowing down either. King’s ability to surprise, amaze, and bring us both terror, and solace, remains unsurpassed.
Since Carrie hit cinemas in 1976, Stephen King adaptations have been a regular occurrence for movie-goers. Longlegs director Osgood Perkins' new movie, The Monkey, is based on one of his short stories, and it promises to have Itchy & Scratchy-level violence. However, his influence is so great that many films have been made that are blatant rip-offs of King's work.

It took thirty-six years, but director Tim Burton finally got around to making a sequel to his 1988 hit Beetlejuice – and with that sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, having made over $450 million at the global box office, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear that Warner Bros. wants another sequel. Burton has said not to expect Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice from him… but perhaps he could be persuaded. We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, Burton has completely ruled out the idea of making sequels to two other films on his résumé, Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Speaking with IndieWire, Burton said, “There are certain films I don’t want to make a sequel to. I didn’t want to make a sequel to (Edward Scissorhands) because it felt like a one-off thing. I didn’t want to have a sequel for The Nightmare Before Christmas because it also felt like a one-off thing.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is better off without a sequel, but thanks to one often-forgotten detail, it can still have a future. Tim Burton is the mind behind some of the most popular stop-motion animated movies of the last two decades, and one of his most beloved and successful works is The Nightmare Before Christmas. The Nightmare Before Christmas features incredible stop-motion animation, with a deliciously dark story for the whole family. Unlike many of Disney's best-known animated films, The Nightmare Before Christmas has a markedly darker and more twisted approach to storytelling. Everything from the stop-motion animation to the gruesome characters and the narrative, which is designed to be off-beat and unique, come together beautifully.
Henry Selick directs The Nightmare Before Christmas, a stop-motion fairytale from the mind of Tim Burton. Jack Skellington is the king of Halloween and one of Halloweentown's most beloved citizens, but he longs for something more. When he stumbles across a magical door that leads him to discover Christmas, he makes it his mission to replace Santa Claus and bring festive cheer to his perpetually spooky hamlet.

On Star Trek: The Next Generation, Whoopi Goldberg's Guinan introduced a new alien species called the El-Aurians. Guinan joined Tng at the start of the show's second season after Whoopi Goldberg reached out to producers requesting a role on the series. Guinan was an enigma upon her introduction, and Tng took its time revealing more about her, only dropping teases and hints about her past. Guinan had known Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) for some time, and she was one of the few people he trusted for honest advice.
After appearing in 29 episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and two of the Tng films, Guinan returned in Star Trek: Picard season 2. In two different timelines, Guinan (portrayed in the past by Ito Aghayere) helped Admiral Picard and his motley crew restore Star Trek's proper Prime timeline after it was changed by Q (John de Lancie). Movies are empathy machines, as Roger Ebert once wrote. The best films allow us to experience emotions we may not have felt otherwise through a particular character’s story. But some movies conjure emotions that we’re actively seeking out. Happiness. Joy. Love. We call these “feel-good movies.” Everybody has their go-to stable of films they return to over and over again when they need a boost — or maybe just an escape.
If you’re looking to expand your horizons beyond whatever’s streaming on Netflix, or if you just need a pick-me-up Asap, we’ve got you covered. Below, we’ve assembled a list of some of the best feel-good movies to watch when you’re feeling down.

Everything goes wrong right away, however. Stevie flees the scene, leaving his compatriots a little stranded, and Sonny learns that the daily pickup has already occurred, leaving him with only $1,100 in cash.

Animation is an incredibly diverse medium for storytelling, and the best animated movies of all time come in a variety of styles. Feature-length animation has continued to evolve since its beginnings in the 1930s. Hand-drawn 2D animation used to be the norm, but new technologies have set the stage for computer-generated animation, stop-motion, and many more techniques. This means that filmmakers have more freedom than ever, and they are only limited by their imaginations.
Choosing the best animated movies will always spark debate among fans, since animation is so diverse. Animation shouldn't be seen as a genre. Instead, it's best understood as an art form which can facilitate many genres. This means that the best animated movies of all time encompass comedies, sci-fi, fantasy, action and more. It's impossible to reach a consensus on the best animated movies, but there are some classics which everyone can agree on.

Despite his popularity and success with critics and general audiences, not all of Tim Burtons movies have been a hit with critics, and, surprisingly, his best and worst-rated movies on Rotten Tomatoes werent directed by him. Tim Burtons filmmaking career began in the 1970s with various short films, and he made his feature-film directorial debut in 1985 with Pee-wees Big Adventure. However, it was with Beetlejuice in 1988 that Burton could fully show his unique narrative and visual style that mixes horror, fantasy, comedy, and gothic elements.
Since then, Burton has brought his signature style to the superhero genre with Batman and Batman Returns, to stop-motion animation with Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie, to classics of childrens literature like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, sci-fi with Mars Attacks!, and a lot more. Fantasy connotes big world-building which could serve sequels well, but some amazing fantasy movies that deserved sequels never got them. It seems like sequels people wish for are scrapped, while too many unwanted movie remakes and sequels are coming sooner rather than later. Famed fantasy movies in a variety of mediums work as excellent standalones but leave open the potential for an equally great sequel.
Complicating matters is that some of the best standalone fantasy movies might deserve a sequel, but they don't necessarily need one. If the story has come to a natural conclusion and forcing it to carry on would malign it, it is best that the movie is left alone. However, several fantasy movies that are effectively standalones imply some interesting possibilities for sequels, which would cleverly segue into an organic new story.

The '80s were a prominent decade in the horror genre and branching off from that are some of the best comedy horror films. The popular subgenre is often a hit or miss as some of the films lean too far into a campy, comedic tone, fully taking away from any effective thrills. Therefore, the best horror comedy films strike the right balance between the two genres and create an equally entertaining and spooky time.
Most comical, cheesy horror films are self-aware and make a deliberate effort to be a B-movie, but that's where they begin to differ from the best. Films like An American Werewolf in London are merely hoping to provide a few laughs with their frightening concepts. The best horror comedies range from classics like Beetlejuice and Ghostbusters to more underrated films such as Vampire's Kiss.

Henry Selick, the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, says that he has hidden Jack Skellington’s in every one of his films.
The filmmaker recently revealed that he has left Easter Eggs for fans in all of his movies.
“If you look very, very carefully, you might find that there’s some image of Jack in every other film I’ve made. But I can’t legally say that’s true, but it might be true,” Selick said in an interview with GamesRadar+.
The Coraline director pointed fans to a scene from the film, adding, “You might find something in the breakfast.” GamesRadar+ noted the scene from the 2009 film when The Other Mother cracks an egg into a bowl; the yolk has a familiar face.
Other examples include 1996’s James and the Giant Peach, in which the captain of a gang of skeletal pirates looks like Jack and is referred to as Skellington.

Mild horror movies and TV shows introduce kids to the genre with toned-down scares and spooky aesthetics. The best horror movies reshaped storytelling conventions, but full-blown scenarios may still be too intense for kids. Animated horror movies and series like Over the Garden Wall and Frankenweenie provide kids with an introduction to the genre.
Parents might be looking for some milder movies and TV shows to introduce their kids to horror. Horror is an amazing genre with boundless potential for profound commentary while providing thrills few other types of entertainment can achieve. The best horror movies of all time rewrote major storytelling conventions, with their influence leaking into other genres. However, a full-blown slasher or claustrophobic demonic monster scenario can still be a lot for kids.
Horror movies and TV shows for kids probably feature creepy aesthetics that are still oddly pleasant, and toned-down versions of tropes like jump scares and hidden monsters.

Short runtimes of animated Disney movies, such as Dumbo at 64 minutes, make for quick and concise viewing experiences that engage audiences. Movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Ice Age offer easy and joyful watches for all ages, with relatable characters and important themes. Feel-good moments, beautiful soundtracks, and the exploration of themes like the importance of family can be found in many Disney classics.
Over the years, Disney has released a huge catalog of feel-good animated movies for all to enjoy, but as stories made for the silver screen grow in length, a short watch can sometimes feel preferable over a longer, drawn-out narrative. An average film in 2023 clocks in at a little over two hours, but such an extensive viewing experience isn't always appealing. Since Disney began producing films in 1937, the studio has made more than 60 animated feature films and many of them run 90 minutes or under.

A couple months ago, and thirty-nine years after they made the vampire classic Fright Night (watch it Here) together, several members of the film’s cast reunited with writer/director Tom Holland (and were joined by special guests Mark Hamill and Rosario Dawson) for a live reading of the script that will be released as episodes of the podcast Table Read – and in fact, the first part of that reading has already been released. You can find it by clicking over to the Table Read website. A member of the ComicBook.com staff was in attendance at the live reading, and had the chance to talk to Holland and Chris Sarandon, who played the vampire Jerry Dandridge in the film. Sidney Lumet was the Oscar-nominated director who proved incredibly prolific during his career, directing over 40 movies in 50 years, from his feature debut “12 Angry Men” (1957) through his cinematic farewell “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead” (2007). But how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born on June 25, 1924, Lumet got his start as a child actor, appearing in “One Third of a Nation” (1939) when he was 15 years old. After serving during WWII, he quickly began directing Off-Broadway plays before moving into the burgeoning medium of television, where he helmed hundreds of live teleplays. While working on episodes of “Playhouse 90,” “Kraft Theater” and many more, he honed his abilities to shoot quickly and economically.
His turned to movies with “12 Angry Men,” an adaptation of Reginald Rose‘s TV drama about a lone juror (Henry Fonda) holding out during a murder trial.

Sally's backstory may have been sadder before Halloween Town. Some fans believe Sally was a witch before the events of The Nightmare Before Christmas. Unfortunately, the theory of Sally being a witch before The Nightmare Before Christmas is debunked by the movie itself.
The Nightmare Before Christmas has been the subject of many theories, among them one that completely changes Sallys story, but makes it a lot sadder. Back in 1993, the stop-motion animated fantasy movie The Nightmare Before Christmas was released, bringing some freshness to the animated genre, which is home to mostly lighter and more colorful stories for young viewers. Directed by Henry Selick and based on a story by Tim Burton, The Nightmare Before Christmas was a critical and commercial success, developing a cult following and being regarded as one of the greatest animated movies of all time.

In a new interview, Chucky creator Don Mancini revealed that he is open to focusing solely on the Child's Play franchise. Mancini also revealed that he is in the early stages of creating a new Chucky movie. No new information about the possible upcoming slasher movie has been revealed at this time.
A new movie in the Child's Play franchise has been teased by Don Mancini. Mancini is the shepherd of the long-running horror franchise, having provided the story for the original 1988 slasher, written its six sequels, directed the most recent three installments, and co-created the television show Chucky, which will air season 3 part 2 this April. The only movie that did not feature Mancini's participation was the 2019 remake of the same name, which has not received a sequel.

Martus Mazur was DS9's answer to Harry Mudd but failed to make a lasting impression compared to the original charismatic swindler. Sarandon's performance as Mazur lacked the bombast of Harry Mudd, making the character easy to forget after just one appearance. Quark found a better rival in Liquidator Brunt in DS9 Season 3, bringing out new layers of his character that Mazur failed to do.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine attempted to introduce its own version of Star Trek: The Original Series' Harry Mudd (Roger C. Carmel), but the character failed to take off. DS9's Quark (Armin Shimerman) was arguably the closest that the show came to replicating Tos' charismatic swindler. However, DS9 showrunner Michael Piller had planned to introduce a character in season 2, who would have been a more overt tribute to Roger C. Carmel's classic Star Trek character.

Tim Burton's "Dark Christmas" trilogy includes Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Mars Attacks! is Burton's secret Christmas movie, subtly designed to fit the holiday season release. Mars Attacks! garnered mixed reviews for its humor, making it one of Burton's lowest-rated and forgetful projects.
Tim Burton has an unofficial Christmas trilogy formed by some of his most popular movies, but there’s another, secret entry in this group that ended up becoming a big box office flop. Tim Burton has become one of the most recognizable filmmakers of his generation thanks to his unique combination of Gothic elements, horror, and fantasy, which are present in almost all of his works. Burton’s feature-length directorial debut arrived in 1985 with Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, but it wasn’t until his second movie, Beetlejuice (1988), that he was able to fully display his unique visual style.

Martus, the antagonist resembling Guinan, used his listening skills for criminal activities, showing a darker side than Guinan.

Plot: A dutiful damsel agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to find the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. Thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, she must rely on her wits and will to survive.
Review: The idea of the anti-fairy tale is nothing new. From the grounded Cinderella tale Ever After starring Drew Barrymore to the John Wick-inspired The Princess starring Joey King, outdated stories of helpless maidens needing to be rescued by Prince Charming have lost their appeal in recent years. With empowerment narratives sometimes going too far in the opposite direction, striking a balance between good storytelling without archaic stereotypes is a tricky endeavor. While Disney has tried to flip the script with animated projects like Frozen or the live-action Maleficent, Netflix has delivered an update to the age-old stories of dragons, royalty, and knights with their dark fantasy Damsel.

Ah, the 1990s. Perhaps the peak of the moviegoing experience. Theaters consistently showed classics such as the special effects marvel "Jurassic Park," "The Shawshank Redemption," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "Pulp Fiction," "Fargo," and "Titanic." The decade also featured an abundance of outstanding horror films like "The Sixth Sense," "Scream," "Misery," and "Interview with the Vampire," all boasting big-name stars and top-tier directors.
However, playing at the opposite end of the cineplex were thrillers you may have never heard about or skipped simply due to bad reviews or scathing word of mouth. Some of Hollywood's top talent attached themselves to such projects, thwarted by ornery critics or moviegoers seeking higher-end entertainment. That's a shame.
While there are undoubtedly plenty of terrible horror films from the 90s, the decade was also ripe with lower-tier entries that have aged surprisingly well. Many don't reset the bar established by esteemed pictures like "The Silence of the Lambs,...

Tom Holland's 1988 film "Child's Play" was about a serial killer named Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) who was fatally wounded by a cop (Chris Sarandon) during a shootout in a toy warehouse. As he lay dying, Charles, a.k.a. Chucky, used voodoo magic to shunt his consciousness into a nearby Good Guy doll, a talking plastic child about a foot tall. In the body of the doll, Chucky continues his reign of terror. "Child's Play" was clearly a spoof of the Cabbage Patch Kids phenomenon a few years previous, positing that the year's difficult-to-obtain ultra-hot Christmas toy could possibly contain the soul of a murderer.
To date, there have been six sequels to "Child's Play," a remake, and a spinoff series called "Chucky," which concluded part one of its third season in October of 2023. The series became increasingly wild as it went on, tilting heavily into camp and comedy.

The National Film Registry says of The Nightmare Before Christmas, “The king of dark whimsy, Tim Burton won over an even larger (and decidedly younger) crowd with this delightful stop-motion animated offering. Jack Skellington, whose giant pumpkin head rests precariously on top of his rail-thin body, is the king of Halloween Town; one year he dreams of bringing a little Christmas magic to his humble hamlet. Conceived and produced by Burton (with direction by Henry Selick), Nightmare features creative set design to construct an imaginary world, songs by Danny Elfman and the voice talents of Chris Sarandon,...

It's that time of year again! You know, the one where we all debate whether or not something is a Christmas movie, like "Die Hard" or "Gremlins." The big one, and the one that I must insist belongs to two holidays — Halloween and Christmas — is 1993's "The Nightmare Before Christmas." I don't see why it can't be both. That said, there are certain parts of the film that seem to fall firmly into one category. That includes when Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon and Danny Elfman) appears as the Pumpkin King at the beginning of the film and during the song "This Is Halloween."
Jack is cool no matter what outfit he's in, but there is something so delightfully and creepily sinister about him when he's in that guise (since I mostly want to hug him for the rest of the...

Tim Burton loves to make things spooky and morbid, but his favorite holiday might well be Christmas. Look at how many of his films take place during the Yuletide season: "Batman Returns," "Edward Scissorhands," etc. He also conceived of "The Nightmare Before Christmas," which is all about Halloween Town's top ghoul, Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon), getting Christmas fever. While Burton handed off directing duties of the stop-motion picture to Henry Selick, it's easy to see his fingerprints and why he would empathize with Jack.
David A. Bossert's "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas Visual Companion" was released this year for the film's 30th anniversary. The book features interviews with the film's crew, from Selick to Art Director Kelly Asbury, where they describe forming the film's distinct visual style — since there were multiple holiday-themed dimensions, they couldn't stick to just one aesthetic.
For Halloween Town, though, they took after Burton's...

In a Halloween world where every person is a monster, a vampire, a skeleton, a werewolf, a demon, or a creature that hides under the stairs, who could possibly be a villain? In Henry Selick's 1993 stop-motion animated fantasy "The Nightmare Before Christmas," Jack Skellington is the community's most famous local hero, but he is not a killer. Indeed, Jack seems to be good-hearted (if he had a heart) and secretly longs for romance. The local mad scientist Dr. Finkelstein (William Hickey) can resurrect dead skeletons, but he doesn't want to take lives. Even the two-faced Mayor (Glenn Shadix) is more ineffectual than evil.
The only monster in Halloween Town that truly longs for violence and aches to kill people with his own hands is Oogie Boogie, a.k.a. the Boogeyman (Ken Page). As imagined by the film's designer, Tim Burton, Oogie Boogie is a large, empty-eyed burlap sack full of bugs and snakes.
