At the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, native Pennsylvanian Janet Gaynor made history as the first American-born performer to win an Oscar by taking the Best Actress prize for her body of work in “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and “Sunrise.” Over the subsequent 95 years, 215 more thespians originating from the United States won the academy’s favor, meaning the country has now produced 68.1% of all individual acting Oscar recipients. Considering the last decade alone, the rate of such winners is even higher, at 70.3%.
At this point, 96.8% of American-born acting Oscar victors have hailed from one of 34 actual states. Of those constituting the remainder, three originated from the federal District of Columbia, while four were born in the territory of Puerto Rico. New York (home to 49 winners) is the most common birth state among the entire group, followed by California (34), Illinois (13), Massachusetts (11), and Pennsylvania (11).

Among the various distinctions “Everything Everywhere All at Once” incurred by winning seven awards at the 95th Oscars was becoming the first film in a dozen years (and ninth overall) to conquer both supporting acting categories. This rare occurrence involved Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis preventing their respective “The Banshees of Inisherin” competitors from accomplishing the same goal, as the sets of featured nominees from “Belfast” and “The Power of the Dog” had both failed to do one year earlier. In January 2023, Renner was involved in a horrific accident in which he suffered blunt chest trauma and 30 broken bones after being hit and run over by a snowplow on his property. Jeremy Renner is ready to resume his role as the figurative Mayor of Kingstown, exactly one year after the snowplow accident that nearly ended his life.
Last January 1, Renner — after using his personal Sno-Cat to help a nephew whose car was stuck in the snow, at the actor’s Lake Tahoe property — got out of the plow, which then started to roll. When Renner tried to get back in to stop the 1,400-lb. machine, it ran him over.

In 1997, the Screen Actors Guild award for best ensemble in a motion picture was expected to go to a “serious” nominee like The English Patient (which would go on to win the best picture Oscar), Sling Blade or Marvin’s Room (boasting a cast including Meryl Streep and Leonardo DiCaprio). But The Birdcage swooped in for a surprise win.
Producer-director Mike Nichols and writer Elaine May had adapted the film from the French stage farce La Cage Aux Folles, moving the story of a gay couple who own a nightclub in Saint-Tropez to Miami, where Robin Williams and Nathan Lane, as Armand and Albert Goldman, become increasingly stressed out when Armand’s son, Val (Dan Futterman), comes to visit with his fiancée (Calista Flockhart) and her ultraconservative parents. The cast is rounded out by Hank Azaria as the Goldmans’ housekeeper, Christine Baranski as Val’s mother and Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest as Republican Sen.

Kevin Bacon, dancing away, in 4K? Footloose is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK, it’s been confirmed.
Paramount Pictures is wasting little time sorting new catalogue releases for the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format in 2024, with the news that the 1980s hit Footloose is heading to the format.
Already confirmed in America, a UK release has now been earmarked for February 12th 2024, and the film has gone up for order now. You can find it here.
Initially, it’s only available as a Steelbook release, although it’s expected that a regular 4K disc package isn’t far away. It’s the original film, incidentally, that’s getting the release, and not the remake.
Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, Dianne Wiest and John Lithgow thus take the lead roles here, with Herbert Ross behind the camera.

Patrick Wilson is no stranger to the horror genre, having starred in the likes of three Conjuring movies and three Insidious movies (one of which he directed), among other things – but I never would have predicted that his name would be attached to a stage musical adaptation of Joel Schumacher’s 1987 vampire classic The Lost Boys (watch it Here). Especially not as a producer. But producing a The Lost Boys stage musical is exactly what Wilson is doing, according to Deadline.
Wilson and fellow producers James Carpinello and Marcus Chait are teaming up with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia writer/executive producer David Hornsby, Parade director Michael Arden, and the pop rock band The Rescues to make this stage musical happen, through a special arrangement with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures. Hornsby will be writing the book with Broadway actor Chris Hoch, while The Rescues provide the music and Ethan Popp...

Practical Magic is a beloved feminist cult classic with romantic drama and scary elements, making it perfect for a girls' night or watching with a Bff. The film centers around the Owens family, cursed to have any man who loves them meet a horrible fate, and their journey to break the curse. A sequel to Practical Magic is not only obtainable but also timely, with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock at the perfect age to reprise their roles as the matriarchs of the family in the present day.
To say that Practical Magic is a beloved masterpiece is an understatement. The film has garnered quite a following over the years for being a feminist cult classic full of whimsical romantic drama and some genuinely scary elements despite not being an actual horror movie. Rumors of a sequel have been making the rounds on the internet for quite some time now.

A theory connects Edward Scissorhands to Hellraiser, suggesting that the inventor in the film "fixed" Edward to make him human. Edward Scissorhands can be seen as Tim Burton's own versions of Pinocchio and Frankenstein's creature, with parallels to their misunderstood and unloved nature. If the theory is true, Edward Scissorhands becomes a tragic horror movie, with the inventor being a sinister character and Edward experiencing changes that explain his anger bursts and lack of remorse.
Although Tim Burton’s movies live in their own, unique universes, a wild theory connects Edward Scissorhands to none other than Clive Barker’s horror classic Hellraiser. After making his directorial debut with Pee-wee’s Big Adventure in 1985, Tim Burton explored an original story in Beetlejuice before visiting Gotham City with Batman. After exploring the story of Bruce Wayne, Burton returned to original stories in 1990 with Edward Scissorhands, which also marked Burton’s first collaboration with Johnny Depp,...

Let Them All Talk, directed by Steven Soderbergh, received mixed reviews due to its experimental nature and improvised dialogue. Critics praised the strong, believable performances by the cast, especially Candice Bergen's memorable and unapologetic portrayal. Some critics found the lack of a central script and meandering storyline to be detrimental, resulting in a dull and aimless cinematic experience for certain viewers.

Piper Laurie, the three-time Oscar-nominated actress known for her performances in The Hustler and Carrie and for her outlandish two-character, two-gender turn on the original Twin Peaks, died Saturday morning in Los Angeles. She was 91.
Laurie had not been well for some time, her rep, Marion Rosenberg, told The Hollywood Reporter.
An Emmy winner who was nominated nine times during her career, Laurie spent three years as a child in a sanatorium, broke free from her original contract at Universal Pictures, once went 15 years without making a movie and starred in the original production — for live television — of Days of Wine and Roses.
