It took eight hours to put him into the prosthetic suit for his role as Mr. Hyde in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003) and three hours to take the suit off.

He is the son of the Scottish director Gordon Flemyng, who mainly worked in television but is also known for directing the two Doctor Who (1963) cinema films made during the 1960s starring Peter Cushing, Dr. Who and the Daleks (1965) and Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. (1966).

He played the protagonist's father in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), despite being almost three years younger than Brad Pitt.

He has worked with the Royal Shakesspeare Company in Coriolanus, As You Like It and All's Well That End's Well amongst others.

He has appeared in two films based on comics by Alan Moore - From Hell (2001) and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003).

He attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

He is part-owner of The Duchess Bar in Battersea, London.

With the death of Sir John Mills on April 23, 2005, he is the only one of the seven actors to have played Professor Bernard Quatermass - which he did in The Quatermass Experiment (2005) - who is still alive. Reginald Tate, John Robinson, André Morell, Brian Donlevy and Andrew Keir died in 1955, 1979, 1978, 1972 and 1997 respectively.

He is the father of Noah and Cassius.
