King Charles, CNN’s once-a-week talker featuring Gayle King and Charles Barkley, ended last week with no plans to extend the limited series.
The show averaged about a half-million viewers in its debut but trailed its rivals in its 10 p.m. Et time slot on Wednesdays. It was announced as a limited-run series to begin with, featuring two high-profile personalities in conversation about major events and cultural moments.
The show also was a signature feature of then-ceo Chris Licht’s plans to overhaul the network’s primetime lineup with big-name personalities hosting shows once or twice a week. Although that’s a bit unconventional for cable news, MSNBC has had success with Rachel Maddow’s show since it went to just Mondays in 2022, as she had signed a new contract for fewer days.

The reign of King Charles on CNN has officially ended.
The CNN limited series televised its final episode last week, with co-hosts Charles Barkley and Gayle King signing off with thanks for staff and compliments for each other.
“I will say this: I have loved working with you and something tells me Charles, this will not be the last time that we’re working together,” King said.
“Call me Gayle,” Barkley replied.
“We will see you the next time whenever we see you,” King told viewers. “Thanks so much for being with us for the past six months. We had a blast.”
A CNN spokesperson noted that the show was announced as a limited series, with a defined end date of spring 2024.

In her 25 seasons on television, Oprah Winfrey ruled the daytime talk show scene, often allowing guests to open up about difficult subjects and their life issues.
Some of those guests likely felt that being on the couch with Oprah and discussing emotional situations for her show was therapeutic.
Oprah’s popular Chicago-based infotainment and talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, ran from September 1986 to May 2011, which meant a lot of guests for Oprah to listen to and emotional situations to navigate.
Throughout those 25 seasons, many therapists also appeared on her longtime show to discuss various topics with Oprah, guests, and audience members.
However, the woman called the Queen of All Media recently admitted she’s “never been to a therapist” herself.
Instead, she said her “real therapy” came from her best friend, Gayle King.

It was a big night for Kristen Wiig on Saturday Night Live as she joined the Five-Timers Club. However, she was welcomed into the elite group by a bunch of mostly Non-Five-Timers Club members.
The actress and comedian kicked off her monologue, saying, “I am so happy to be back, and I am so excited because it is my fifth time hosting. So I’m officially in the Five-Timers Club!”
She then took a moment to acknowledge the sketch comedy show’s band, but shortly after, that’s when the celebrity cameos started, beginning with Paul Rudd, who previously joined the club in 2021.
“I also heard a rumor that you might be doing one of those five-timer sketches featuring awesome celebrity cameos,” Rudd said after popping up in the Studio 8H audience. “So, is there like a script or something I could look at for that?” But unfortunately, Wiig informed...

A star-studded group of veteran “Saturday Night Live” guest hosts were on hand this evening to welcome Kristen Wiig into the “Five-Timers Club.” But much to Wiig’s chagrin, most of them haven’t matched her feat of actually hosting “SNL” five times.
The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member made her fifth appearance as host — having previously hit the stage in 2013, 2016 and twice in 2020.
The stolen “SNL” valor actually began with a legit five-timer: Paul Rudd, on hand to welcome her from the audience..
“As a former cast member, it is very special,” Wiig said. “I’m really excited about getting my jacket tonight… they don’t just hand the jackets off to anyone.”
Well, not quite. Soon more stars came out: Matt Damon, Jon Hamm, Martin Short, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, Martin Short and Ryan Gosling. None of whom haven actually hosted five times yet.

Saturday Night Live took a break from politics in its cold open to riff on March Madness — more specifically how the women’s tournament has been a lot more exciting than the men’s competition.
The setup was TBS’ post-game coverage, with co-host Kenny Smith (Devon Walker) noting that 14 million people watched the the Iowa-Connecticut game, where Caitlin Clark faced Paige Bueckers.
Fellow host Charles Barkley (Kenan Thompson) chimed in, “The women’s is turning up the stars. Caitlin Clark is going as for State Farm, Subway, XFinity and Nike. I’m only doing ads for three of those companies.”
Later, the anchors go to Lsu coach Kim Mulkey (Heidi Gardner), who says she’s been made up to look “like the Riddler with the Talbots.”
When she was asked about her reputation for being too tough on her players, she told them, “Ohh please. People think I’m just...

Fans of The Price Is Right recently called out a contestant’s win, with some slamming the game or criticizing the prize winner for her efforts later in the show.
However, host Drew Carey expressed his happiness over seeing the individual walk away with an exciting prize while he was there.
The game show features a range of games involving guessing prices and one contestant recently won a car at what many believe to be a challenging price-guessing game.
However, another contestant’s recent win in a well-known game didn’t receive as much fan praise.
With the Range Game, the prize is typically a vacation, which was the case for the latest edition, as the contestant was trying to win a trip to Costa Rica.
The gameboard featured a range of prices from $11,000 to $11,600, and the trip’s price is somewhere in that range. A $150 red range finder moved...

Can college basketball turn TV’s fortunes around?
At a moment where linear TV is in something of a lull, with last year’s strikes still being felt and a continued weak advertising market, the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament might be just the thing the market needs.
As usual, this year’s games will be televised on CBS, TNT, TBS and TruTV, and will stream online via Max (for the TNT, TBS and TruTV games), Paramount+ (for the CBS games) and the March Madness Live app.
John Bogusz, the head of ad sales for CBS Sports (he will retire later this year), says that this year’s tournament is trending up high single digits in terms of dollars and pricing, as sports outpace entertainment in the marketplace. The entire tournament is “virtually sold out,” he says, with the Final Four and championship in particularly high demand (they are holding...

Warner Bros. Discovery wants to bring one of its “zombie” cable networks back to life with a big jolt of sports.
The media company intends to create a new nightly sports block for TruTV, the reality-series cable network that has largely been left to show endless episodes of the popular prank show “Impractical Jokers” and the caught-on-camera serial “World’s Dumbest.” In doing so, Warner no doubt hopes to create new value where there has only been a little. A new sports schedule would likely draw broader viewership and new ad dollars to the network, and might even spur cable distributors to accord the outlet more value in future carriage contracts.
The sports schedule will not consist only of simulcasts of NHL, MLB and NBA matchups that typically turn up on the company’s flagship TBS and TNT cable networks. Warner intends to air new “alterna-casts” that target different audiences; a...

Bowen Yang may not have been too pleased about Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley’s recent cameo on Saturday Night Live.
During Saturday’s cold open, Gayle King (played by Punkie Johnson) and Charles Barkley (Kenan Thompson) welcomed Donald Trump (James Austin Johnson) to CNN to respond to voters’ questions. Haley appeared halfway through the skit when host Ayo Edebiri popped up as an audience member asking Haley, “What would you say was the main cause of the Civil War? And do you think it starts with an ‘S’ and ends with a ‘-lavery?'” Thankfully, Haley conceded that she does,...

Nikki Haley made a surprise appearance in the Saturday Night Live cold open tonight, this time as a “concerned South Carolina voter” who asks questions of Donald Trump (James Austin Johnson) at a CNN town hall.
The skit had Gayle King and Charles Barkley, hosts of CNN’s King Charles, moderating the town hall with the former president, with Johnson again playing Trump and with his propensity to sprinkle in political rhetoric with a pop culture stream of consciousness.
Haley, who has stepped up her attacks on Trump following the New Hampshire primary, drew loud applause from the SNL audience as she appeared in the town hall audience to ask him a question.
“Why won’t you debate Nikki Haley?” she asked Trump.
Johnson, as Trump, replied, “Oh my God! It’s her, the woman who was in charge of security on January 6th. It’s Pelosi.”

Television has long ridden the coattails of cinema when coming up with new programming, serializing popular genres like Westerns and Crime Thrillers since its very inception. However, the obvious budgetary limitations of TV production mean that certain kinds of stories are less suited for the small screen. Thankfully, we’re lucky enough to live in a time when technology and the streaming wars have finally caught up to film when it comes to producing the type of long-form content we’ve always yearned for.
Case in point, Legendary and Apple TV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters achieved the unthinkable by bringing blockbuster-worthy Kaijus to the small screen at a scale we’ve never seen before. And though the show has already aired its finale, I know that Kaiju fans are likely still clamoring for more TV-based monsters, so we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six TV shows to watch after Monarch.

It all began with the sound of thundering footsteps and a now-iconic roar before giving way to Akira Ifukube’s equally iconic music. Japanese cinema and monster movies worldwide would never be the same again. In the beginning, Godzilla represented the ultimate in fear and destruction. A creature so colossal, he could lay waste to entire cities just by lumbering through them and swinging his mighty tail before setting them ablaze with a burst of his atomic breath. Over the years he evolved from national terror to national treasure, becoming a protector and kind of mascot to the nation of Japan. He was transplanted and championed all over the world. Eventually he became a joke and a marketing tool used to sell everything from Fiats, to Snickers bars, to Nike shoes in a one-on-one pickup game with Charles Barkley. Within the past year, Godzilla has come full circle with the...

CNN’s debut of King Charles, the new show featuring Gayle King and Charles Barkley, premiered to 510,000 viewers, according to Nielsen fast national early numbers.
The show’s total viewing audience was well behind rivals: Fox News’ Gutfeld! topped the time slot with 1.97 million viewers, and MSNBC averaged 1.62 million with The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.
The CNN show, however, did edge out MSNBC in the 25-54 demo, averaging 139,000, compared to 132,000 for MSNBC’s The Last Word and 257,000 for Fox News’ Gutfeld!
King Charles is a once-a-week 10 p.m. Et show on Wednesday evening, and the first show guests included Steve Kerr. The show was part of then-cnn CEO Chris Licht’s strategy of programming primetime with star names. The reign of King Charles — the CNN show, not the British monarch — began rather quietly Wednesday.
The weekly show, hosted by Gayle King and Charles Barkley, drew just 501,00 viewers for its debut, according to same-day Nielsen ratings (it adjusted up a little from 486,000 in fast nationals). It finished a distant third among the biggest cable news channels in total viewers and didn’t really moving the needle from CNN’s recent averages in the hour. In fact, it ranks as the smallest audience of any of CNN’s primetime debuts this year.
King Charles was one of the last big moves of the brief Chris Licht era at CNN. The Warner Bros. Discovery-owned network announced the show in late April — six weeks before Licht was let go following a profile in The Atlantic that was poorly received among network staffers. (Mark Thompson became CEO of CNN in October.)

CNN has set Nov. 29 as the premiere date for King Charles, the primetime limited series hosted by Gayle King and Charles Barkley.
The show will air at 10 p.m. Et on Wednesdays, although the second week will be an hour earlier because of the GOP debate on Dec. 6.
In a promo, King called the show “our unfiltered take on the biggest stories of the day.”
The show’s genesis was during the tenure of Chris Licht, the former CNN boss who was ousted in June. Licht had sought to shore up the network’s primetime lineup with star personalities, even if that meant once-a-week primetime shows. MSNBC already has done that, with The Rachel Maddow Show now appearing only on Mondays after Maddow signed a new contract that pulled back on her regular appearances.

Can “King Charles” rule in the heady, competitive world of cable news? CNN will soon find out.
The new weekly one-hour program will debut Wednesday, November 29, at 10 p.m., and will be co-anchored by the unlikely duo of Gayle King, who still has her long-running day job at rival CBS News, and Charles Barkley, the outspoken sportscaster who remains a key element in the NBA coverage provided by CNN’s parent, Warner Bros. CNN executives are counting on the pair to have freewheeling conversations about the biggest stories in the news cycle. “King Charles” is viewed as a limited-run series that will last at least through the first quarter of next year.

"Suits" continues to have a monumental run over on Netflix, having just eclipsed "Ozark" for the record of most consecutive weeks at number one at the top of the Nielsen ratings. During the show's initial nine-season run on USA Network, the legal drama's popularity attracted a number of actors who helped share the spotlight with the core cast to help bolster ratings and fill in new storylines. Throughout the series, appearances from legendary athletes like Charles Barkley and Michael Phelps ended up happening after both of them made it clear that they were huge fans of the show on social media. Adding fresh faces to interact with the cast isn't always a slam dunk, however, and a quick cameo from the wrong actor or celebrity could end up throwing off the natural chemistry and subtle alchemy between the main stars of the show.

David Zaslav, president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, gave Greta Gerwig her flowers on Wednesday at Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology. Considering the box office for “Barbie,” a few dozen (pink) roses was probably the very least he could do.
“Greta Gerwig gets the most credit. She’s an extraordinary genius,” Zaslav said when asked by a Goldman Sachs analyst what lessons Warner Bros. took from what is now the no. 1 film of the year.
Zaslav added that Gerwig “worked very effectively” and “right down to the wire” with the Warner Bros. Pictures marketing team.
“Every division of this company got behind ‘Barbie,'” he said. “Every asset that we have was turned pink.”
Zaslav means that both literally and figuratively. He had Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, Kenny “The Jet” Smith, and Ernie Johnson talking “Barbie” on “Inside the NBA.” If you watched a futbol match in Sweden, the field turned pink during halftime.

The new bundles are coming, according to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
Speaking at a Goldman Sachs conference Wednesday, the executive said that his company has had discussions with other companies in the content space about developing new bundles to create a better “consumer experience.” Those conversations have picked up “in the last few months,” Zaslav said.

Warner Bros. Discovery appears to have bigger digital plans for Charles Barkley and Anderson Cooper.
Warner Bros. Discovery plans to introduce a more robust offering of sports and news content to its Max streaming service in the near future, executives said during a conference call Thursday with Wall Street analysts, an effort they no doubt hope will give lend the venue an edge over rivals.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said Thursday that the company, which operates CNN and has a robust portfolio of NBA, MLB and NHL rights has “a real strategic plan that we are finalizing” regarding sports. He also noted that “news and sports are important. They are differentiators. They are compelling. They make these platforms come alive.”

He also noted that “news and sports are important. They are differentiators. They are compelling. They make these platforms come alive.”

Daniel Goldberg, the co-screenwriter of “Stripes” and producer of feature comedies like “Space Jam,” “Old School” and the “Hangover” trilogy, died Wednesday at age 74.
A frequent collaborator of directors Ivan Reitman and Todd Phillips and actor Bill Murray, who in addition to “Stripes” starred in the Goldberg co-penned “Meatballs,” Goldberg is survived by his wife, fellow Canadian film producer Ilona Herzberg, and his brother, “Deuce Bigalow” screenwriter Harris Goldberg. Per media reports, no cause of death was made public.
In a tribute for Deadline published Wednesday, Ivan Reitman’s son, filmmaker Jason Reitman, remembered Goldberg as “one of the kindest and most gentle souls I’ve ever known.”
Goldberg and Reitman first met in 1966 at McMaster University, where they went on to make several short films together (many of which starred a young “Schitt’s Creek” Emmy winner Eugene Levy) and cofounded a film society — not without kicking up some controversy,...

Skip Bayless has taken a jab at Charles Barkley after the former NBA star called the Fox Sports analyst an “idiot.” In return, the Undisputed co-host called Barkley a “clown.”
“Still chuckling over a clown calling me an idiot,” Bayless tweeted.
The tweet from Bayless after Barkley’s coverage of The Match earlier this week where Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson faced off Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce in a golf competition. Barkley took a swing at Bayless in a nod to Shannon Sharpe leaving the FS1 show and getting a contract buyout from the sports network.
“He’s the best tight end, it’s between him and Gronk as the best ever. And I don’t want to leave out Shannon Sharpe,” Barkley said. “I want one of those jobs where I can get a buyout for working with an idiot.”
Barkley later joked, “What do you think Ernie?...

The weather in Las Vegas on Thursday is scorching, with a high of 102 degrees. It’s the type of weather that would keep most people inside.
But at the Wynn Las Vegas, Warner Bros. Discovery Sports will be live on the golf course for the latest edition of The Match, its celebrity-driven golf franchise. The latest installment features Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce facing off against Golden State Warriors stars Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.
The made-for-tv event will see them playing golf, yes, but its also about the banter and trash talking between the players. And for Wbd, it’s about the brand integrations as well.
“Maybe I’ll get a few Coors Lights to kind of calm me down,” Mahomes said during a virtual press conference for the event. The headcovers for Mahomes’ clubs will also bear the Coors Light logo, with the beer...

Chris Licht is stepping down as the chairman and CEO of CNN Worldwide, ending a tumultuous tenure as the first leader of the network under parent Warner Bros. Discovery.
Licht’s departure comes after a bombshell profile in The Atlantic infuriated staffers, already upset over the way that a recent town hall with President Donald Trump was handled.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav told staffers in CNN’s morning call that Licht was leaving and that a search was on for a new CEO. “It didn’t work out,” he said.
In a memo to staffers, Zaslav wrote, “This job was never going to be easy, especially at a time of great disruption and transformation, and Chris poured his heart and soul into it. He has a deep love for journalism and this business and that has been evident throughout his tenure. Unfortunately, things did not work out the...
