Spoiler shields up! This article discusses events up to and including episode 3 of "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5.
Who knew we'd been watching an origin story? Last week, "Discovery" dropped the surprise reveal that the newly-introduced (former) Captain Rayner had been carefully maneuvered by the writing team to serve as a potential replacement to Mr. Saru (Doug Jones) in the position of Number One, despite firmly establishing himself as something of an antagonistic and far more reckless counterpoint to Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) during their near-disastrous away mission. It isn't every day that a Starfleet vessel recruits a new bridge officer at the onset of a critical assignment of top priority, let alone someone who was only just forced into early retirement after a scathing inquiry into his actions. But Burnham saw something in him (even if Ensign Tilly still can't figure out what that is) and with Saru off...

After spending years in development hell, during which time it passed through the hands of popular genre filmmakers like George A. Romero, Mick Garris, Clive Barker, and Joe Dante, a reboot of the 1932 Universal Monsters classic The Mummy made its way out into the world in 1999 with Deep Rising writer/director Stephen Sommers at the helm. Made on a budget of $80 million, the new take on The Mummy was a box office success, earning over $416 million worldwide. Mixing horror, adventure, and comedy, it was a film that could be enjoyed by adults while also serving as gateway horror for a new generation of genre fans. Many see The Mummy (1999) as a beloved classic these days – so it makes sense that Universal has decided to give the film a theatrical re-release for its 25th anniversary. It will be back on the big screen in theatres nationwide starting April 26th, and tickets...

What’s the saying? Oh yeah… third times the charm and the Resident Evil series is no exception. This one is pretty divisive with the consensus being some people, like myself, loved this film while others felt this was the beginning of the downward slope of sequels of the franchise. Hear me out as to why I sing its praises. For one, it tells a cohesive story and gives us a side of Alice that we’ve been dying to see. We get more new characters that bring gravitas to the story as well as a fully fleshed out villain and it’s a lot of fun. Plus, its pays homage to The Road Warrior in the best way. So, let’s hit up the Sand Dunes of Vegas,...

When asked about the long journey to Star Trek: Discovery‘s fifth and final season, producer Alex Kurtzman is honest but optimistic. “It’s been an incredible ride for us,” Kurtzman tells Den of Geek when we chat with him at SXSW 2024. “And yeah, it was an incredibly bumpy first year.”
Kurtzman’s referring to the behind-the-scenes difficulties that plagued the show’s first two seasons. As the dawn of the new millennium approached, the world would start to see a trend of films that would become very mainstream. These types of movies are action horror video game adaptations. As stated in our previous video, there have been a number of different ones, but nothing stood out more than Resident Evil. In 2002, we were graced with the first in this series. It may not have been the critic’s favorite, but it did well enough at the box office to spawn a sequel. The name of that sequel is Resident Evil: Apocalypse (watch it Here). With a title that big, you would think the filmmakers went for bigger, better and more destructive…right? For the most part, yes and they even packed in some surprises for fans of the series. So today on Horror Revisited we ask that you suit up and strap in for Alice...

It was when Alonso Ruizpalacios was in London working as a dishwasher at the (now-extinct) Rainforest Cafe that he came up with the idea for La Cocina.
“I was a drama student and I’d just read the [1957] play The Kitchen by Arnold Wesker and to make the work — which is tough, monotonous and very, very hard — bearable, I’d look at it through the creative lens of the play. If you see how a kitchen works, you realize it is much like the world, like [how] society works. Wesker says for Shakespeare all the world is a stage, whereas for him all the world is a kitchen.”
It was decades later, after success with Mexican films like Museo and A Cop Movie, that Ruizpalacios came back to the idea, taking The Kitchen as the jumping-off point for his English-language debut, transferring the action from late-’50s London to modern-day New York.

Egos are charred and tempers seared in La Cocina, a kitchen nightmare set in the engine rooms of a vast Times Square eatery where the staff have more pressing things to worry about than rising temperatures. Take Pedro, a hardened and still-undocumented line cook whose outbursts of ideology can only mask his resentments and vulnerability for so long. Then there’s Julia (Rooney Mara), who is carrying Pedro’s unborn child, hiding her morning sickness in the staff room and planning to sneak out on break to get an abortion. And then there’s Estela (Anna Diaz), our eyes and ears: fresh off the proverbial boat, with barely a word of English, asking strangers on the subway how to get to 45th street before being unceremoniously tossed into a lunch shift that soon resembles The Raft of the Medusa, adrift on a sea of Cherry Coke.

If “the kitchen as war zone” has become a veritable sub-genre unto itself, Alonso Ruizpalacios’ “La Cocina” is the closest thing it has to its own “Gallipoli.” The trenches are made out of stainless steel instead of rotten wood, and the steady bombardment of orders comes with a greater threat of deportation than it does that of immediate death, but a job at The Grill just outside of Times Square is no less dehumanizing than a deployment along the frontlines at Suvla Bay, and it comes without any of the same hope for glory.

Mexican director Alonso Ruizpalacios has had a winning record coming to the Berlin Film Festival since 2013, when his film Gueros took the Best First Feature prize. Five years later he was back with his second, the sensational museum-heist film Museo, and deservedly won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay. His third, A Cop Movie, which plays with the traditional docu form by using actors, won Best Documentary at Mexico’s Golden Ariel Awards.
Ruizpalacios belongs in the same league as iconic current Mexican directors Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and particularly Alejandro González Iñárritu, whose cinematic style seems closest to what Ruizpalacios has been doing. His latest trip to Berlin, La Cocina, reinforces the thrilling talent of this singular filmmaker who for the first time has shot a film using both Spanish and English. Horror sequels should always aim to be better than their predecessors. However, by "better," that doesn't always mean, "scarier." In fact, there are instances where a horror movie sequel has surpassed its previous installment by jumping to a new genre. Typically, that genre is action.
While a majority of horror movie sequels tend to stay in their own lane, there have been numerous instances where the action took over, forcing the horror elements to take a backseat. Fortunately, this usually works out and makes for an enjoyable action-horror film that doesn't stray too far from what made the original work so enjoyable.

Star Trek has introduced numerous great new characters in the last 20 years. For this list, the Kelvin timeline characters in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies count as "new" because they live different lives in a different universe. Animated characters like Lt. Brad Boimler and Rok-Tahk share this list of the greatest Star Trek characters of the last 20 years with Captain Saru, Emperor Georgiou, and Captain Michael Burnham.
One of the most celebrated elements of the Star Trek franchise has always been its characters, and a lot of great new faces have been added to the Trek family in the last 20 years. After the end of Star Trek: Enterprise in 2005, there would be no new Star Trek for four years. J.J. Abrams 2009 Star Trek film brought Trek back to the big screen and proved that audiences were still interested in the adventures of starship captains and space exploration. However,...

It may seem hard to believe, but at one stage Resident Evil was not only the highest-grossing film series based on a video game, but also the highest-grossing horror film series period. Consisting of six movies and a reboot, the Resident Evil movies just kept making money even while they were being bashed by critics. Most of those critics arguably had valid points, but the arrival of a new Resident Evil movie simply became oddly comforting somewhere along the way.
Thanks to the creative voices of Event Horizon director Paul W.S. Anderson and his Fifth Element actress wife Milla Jovovich, six of the seven Resident Evil movies feature the character of Alice (Jovovich firing on all cylinders), a former security specialist and covert operative who initially has amnesia but eventually remembers she’s out to take down the insidious Umbrella Corporation, a global company responsible for Earth’s weirdest zombie apocalypse.

Jafar from Once Upon A Time In Wonderland was recast in season 6 of Once Upon A Time, causing his character arc to be lost in a confusing transfer. Oded Fehr played the role of Jafar in Once Upon A Time season 6, but the declining show and major actor exits prevented the character's development. Naveen Andrews, the original Jafar actor, did not return to the role after Once Upon A Time In Wonderland and instead found success in the critically acclaimed series Sense8.
Once Upon A Time recast the villain Jafar with Oded Fehr in season 6 of the ABC series, despite the character originally being performed by Naveen Andrews in the spinoff, Once Upon A Time In Wonderland. The Once Upon A Time franchise became popular by developing intricate backstories for classic fairytale characters and bringing their reimagined, live-action stories to small screens. When Paramount+ brought Trek back to television in September 2017 with Star Trek: Discovery's double-decker premiere event, it broke ground on a road that would see the rebirth of the Trek franchise.
Six years later, Star Trek: Discovery has saved the galaxy multiple times; traveled through the mycelial network, to the Mirror Universe and back, forward in time nine hundred years, and beyond the edge of the known universe; and spawned the highly successful spin-off Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

In Freeform’s adult animated comedy Praise Petey, New York “It” girl Petey St. Barts (Annie Murphy) becomes a southern cult leader after a father she never knew dies and leaves her his rather complicated legacy.
That includes an entire working town, a throng of comet-obsessed cult members and one hot (and morally superior) redneck named Bandit (John Cho). In desperate need of food and direction until an alien race comes to collect them, Petey’s prophesized arrival seemingly guarantees for the citizens of New Utopia that they will once again have a sense of purpose.
But the former New Yorker with mommy issues and (failed) magazine dreams understandably finds all the human sacrifice and human Shih Tzus (Alfred Molina) a little too much. So instead of merely taking the reins from her father, Petey — alongside Bandit, best friend Eliza (Kiersey Clemons), right-hand Mae Mae (Amy Hill) and old recordings...

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” began its domestic box office journey with $7.2 million in Thursday previews. That is almost on par with the $7.5 million earned by “Fast X” but well below “Rise of the Beasts” ($8.8 million), “John Wick: Chapter 4” ($8.9 million), “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($17.4 million) and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($17 million). Just doing the straight Thursday-to-weekend math, Disney’s latest tentpole could land anywhere between $50 million and $65 million in its opening weekend.
With mixed-positive reviews (66% fresh and 6.3/10 on Rotten Tomatoes) but an uncertain pull among younger moviegoers, Disney is hoping that the 2.5-hour actioner will pull general audiences and casual fans over the weekend as opposed to must-see-it-now opening night anticipation. Anecdotally, my in-laws already have tickets for a Saturday matinee.

In order to bring The Mummy to life, the production team invested a big part of the budget in special effects, and thanks to this, the VFX team was able to cleverly hide the embarrassing mistake of one particular actor. Directed by Stephen Sommers, The Mummy is a remake of the 1932 movie of the same name, and though it received mixed reviews, it was a commercial success. This led to the release of two sequels, a couple of spinoffs, and even a (failed) reboot in 2017, but the 1999 version of The Mummy continues to have a special place in the hearts of fans of the movie series.

Capcom's perennially popular survival horror video game franchise "Resident Evil" has been adapted for both film and television over the years, in live-action and animation. The franchise's cinematic debut began in 2002, loosely following the original game's plot of specialists investigating the nefarious pharmaceutical company the Umbrella Corporation. This leads to Umbrella unleashing the T-Virus, a genetically engineered virus that transforms those infected into ravenous, undead zombies.
While the live-action films have handled the video game source material with varying amounts of fidelity and controversy, there has also been a line of CG animated movies set in the same continuity as the games. Successful worldwide, the "Resident Evil" movies have earned their fair share of fans, including devotees of the games and those new to the franchise. With plenty of films to choose from across the original movie series, 2021 reboot, and animated features, here are the best "Resident Evil" films ranked from worst to best.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. alum Adrianne Palicki recently discussed the ABC series' unrealized spinoff, Marvel's Most Wanted, hinting that she thinks canceling the show may have been a mistake on Disney's part.
Palicki starred on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Barbara "Bobbi" Morse, who Marvel Comics fans will also know as Mockingbird and/or Agent 19. During an interview with Den of Geek, the actor fondly recalled her time playing Bobbi Morse, saying she "loved" working on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and remains good friends with co-stars Ming-Na Wen, Henry Simmons and Nick Blood. Notably, Blood would have starred opposite Palicki on Most Wanted, which shot a pilot but was never picked up as a full series.

With its majestic panorama of Thebes, it's hard to believe that the wild opening scene in The Mummy is not actually CGI. Over the heads of Anubis and other gods of Ancient Egypt, the opening shots of The Mummy eventually settle on High Priest Imhotep and his lover, Anck-su-namun, the prize of Pharaoh Seti I. The opening, which also features a narration by Oded Fehr's Ardeth Bay, paints a dramatic and epic picture of Ancient Egypt before the action switches to the early 20th century.
Upon its release in 1999, The Mummy was a successful blockbuster because of its clever blend of humor, action, and stunning visual effects, which were developed by Industrial Light & Magic. Once Imhotep is awakened from his slumber, much of the film is devoted to impressive CGI sequences, including reanimating Imhotep's corpse and those of his guards, sandstorms, and various plagues, but much of it was also practical.

Star Trek: Discovery has been set in the 32nd century since season 3, but the series' strengths still come from its connection to its former 23rd-century Star Trek: The Original Series era. In Star Trek: Discovery's fifth and final season, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery embark on a quest to find "the greatest treasure in the known galaxy." Discovery's new mission comes on the heels of back-to-back victories over existential threats to the United Federation of Planets - wins Burnham and her crew achieved because of what Star Trek era they came from.

Two long-standing Star Trek tropes were changed for the better by Star Trek: Discovery season 4. Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery faced the direst threat yet to the United Federation of Planets: the Dark Matter Anomaly that could destroy entire planets. Burnham's mission to stop the Dma required the personal intervention of two authority figures she answers to: Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) and the new Federation President, Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal).
Admiral Vance was introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season 3. Vance had the burden of running Starfleet during the era of The Burn, which made warp travel impossible and broke the Federation apart, isolating its few remaining member worlds. Rillak joined Star Trek: Discovery at the start of season 4 as the newly elected head of the Federation. Rillak's plans to reinstate Starfleet's mission of galactic exploration in a post-Burn galaxy were immediately stymied by the arrival of the Dma.

If The Mummy 4 wants to resurrect its franchise, it'll need to copy a casting decision from the franchise it's taken the most inspiration from – Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the final outing for Harrison Ford as the globe-trotting archeologist, features John Rhys-Davies returning as Sallah, one of Indy's greatest allies since first appearing in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Given the divisive popularity of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (from which Sallah is conspicuously absent), this news is a good sign that Indy 5 will be a return to form, and The Mummy 4 should take notes.
A Mummy 4 update teases Brendan Fraser's comeback as adventurer Rick O'Connell. However, one actor has been notably absent from the franchise of late – Oded Fehr, who played Medjai leader and desert heartthrob Ardeth Bay. Originally supposed to die at the end of The Mummy,...

The Resident Evil movies came very close to killing Jill Valentine, which could have steered the series in the right direction. The reason the first Resident Evil movie from 2002 barely resembles the original game is that director Paul W.S. Anderson was hedging his bets. He was a self-professed fan of Capcom's survival horror franchise, but George A. Romero had already been hired to direct an adaptation. Anderson thus wrote a screenplay called Undead that was heavily based on Resident Evil, planning to pitch it as an original project Or a possible Resident Evil adaptation, if Romero pulled out of the movie.
The latter is how events worked out, with Anderson directing the original film, in addition to parts four to six. That's partly why the Resident Evil movies and video games bear little resemblance to one another. Major characters like Chris and Claire Redfield or Ada Wong still appeared, but...

The mysteries surrounding Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg) must finally be solved in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. The cryptic 32nd-century Starfleet official always seems to know more than anyone else about the big questions confronting the USS Discovery and her crew, and he clearly holds senior authority. Kovich is a man of secrets, however. While he reliably shares his encyclopedic knowledge to help Discovery's heroes, Kovich has already been shrouded in mystery for two full seasons.
Kovich presents himself as a soft-spoken intellectual, nondescript but for the enormous rectangular glasses he wears to make himself "look smarter." David Cronenberg lends Star Trek: Discovery compelling star power, and his understated performances offer no hint of the visceral spectacles that are his hallmark as a director and master of body horror. Each appearance of Dr. Kovich has proved memorable, from his interrogation of Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) in Star Trek: Discovery...

In The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser, the Medjai, led by Oded Fehr's Ardeth Bay, are a group of nomadic protectors dating back to the days of the pharaohs, and they really did exist. In the movie, however, the Medjai's history has been changed quite a bit. The Mummy depicts the group as the pharaoh's guards and police force. the group continues to secretly protect Egypt and stop the rise of the undead mummy Imhotep. Oded Fehr's character Ardeth Bay leads the modern incarnation of the group, eventually working with Rick O'Connell and Evelyn Carnahan to take down Imhotep after he was accidentally revived. The Medjai are identified by special tattoos, typically on their faces or wrists, that help to distinguish their resilience and duty to the order.
The Medjai were indeed an ancient organization that operated widely during their time. Their role in The Mummy has a strong historical...
