Fear Street 4 is reviving an old horror trend that started with Stephen King's movie Carrie. A prom is a perfect horror movie setting, offering tension and no way out for characters. Fear Street 4 isn't a sequel to the trilogy, and it's based on R.L. Stine's The Prom Queen book.
More details about Netflix’s Fear Street 4 have been revealed, and it’s reviving an old horror trend that was perfected almost five decades ago. In 2021, Netflix brought R. L. Stine’s book series Fear Street to life with a trilogy, with each movie set in a different year: 1994, 1978, and 1666. However, they are all connected through the curse of Shadyside, the curse of Sarah Fier, and a series of mysterious murders. Thanks to the success of the trilogy, the world of Fear Street is now expanding with a fourth movie.

Shadyside's curse may have been broken in Fear Street Part 3: 1666, but there is even more terror on the horizon in Fear Street Part 4. Following the wildly successful Fear Street trilogy on Netflix, the project was originally pitched as the start of a greater anthology franchise, and there are plenty of R.L. Fear Street: Prom Queen is a standalone movie based on R.L. Stine's book, 'The Prom Queen,' and now boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Directed by Matt Palmer, the film will closely follow the story of Lizzie McVay at Shadyside High School during prom season. Unlike the Fear Street Trilogy, which featured elements from various Stine novels, Prom Queen's self-contained story won't be stretched into another series.
Back in November 2023, it was confirmed by then-chairman of Netflix Films, Scott Stuber (who has since moved on from the company), that a new Fear Street movie was in development based on the works of R.L. Stine. Two months later, it was revealed by Stine himself that the movie would be an adaptation of his novel, 'The Prom Queen.' Director Leigh Janiak and the Netflix streaming service brought us a really fun horror event back in the summer of 2021 with the Fear Street trilogy. Three films that were filmed back-to-back-to-back and then released over the course of three weeks – those films being Fear Street Part One: 1994, Fear Street Part Two: 1978, and Fear Street Part Three: 1666. It was an instant franchise, and had the potential to lead to many more films… because, after all, author R.L. Stine has written over 100 books that have been published under the various Fear Street banners. A while back, Scott Stuber, the head of Netflix Film, said they were developing a new standalone Fear Street project. Then Stine took to social media to reveal that the fourth Fear Street movie would be based on his 1992 book The Prom Queen… and now Fear Street: Prom Queen has a cast! Netflix has announced (via Deadline) that the...

Netflix's shadiest horror franchise is targeting its next set of victims. The slasher series "Fear Street" debuted back in 2021 as three full-length movies set in the fictional but aptly-named town of Shadyside, based on author R.L. Stine's popular "Cheerleaders" sub-trilogy within the "Fear Street" novels. The mega-sized special event was released over the course of three consecutive weeks on the streaming service (check out /Film's spoiler review of the movies here), pulled in a ton of viewers, earned consistently high praise among critics, and served up all sorts of gory kills and supernatural chills -- along with one heck of a memorable kill by a particularly deadly bread slicer. Fans have been clamoring for more sequels ever since and rumors of new movies have swirled since at least 2022, but now we've heard straight from the studio that another release has officially been greenlit.

In life, spewing hate comes easy; finding the good takes effort. That’s my mantra for “Revenge of the Remakes.” Get dirty and identify value where others hastily — maybe unfairly — laid harsh criticisms. Any remake, in any genre, faces biased outrage from peanut galleries who refuse to remove their nostalgia goggles. It’s easy to prey on the hate clickers out there, which is why I use this column as a voice for the misunderstood and wrongly delegitimized. A remake isn’t trash because it’s a remake, there’s more to the equation.
That said (and believed), not all remakes are created equal. With soaring highs come subterranean lows. Sometimes remakes are nothing but a copy-and-paste cash grab, devoid of creative ambitions. These examples fuel smear campaigns about remakes at large — and today, we’re dissecting one of the worst.

In January of 1999, two teen movies opened back to back and kicked off what would be one of the most extraordinary years for youth-oriented movies in the history of Hollywood. Both were No. 1 at the box office their first weekend. Both boasted remarkable casts of rising stars — they even shared a star in Paul Walker. And both whipped ancient genre conventions into new combinations that made them fresh and new. Yet for all their similarities, “Varsity Blues” and “She’s All That” couldn’t have been more different: one an R-rated sports drama that tempered its inspirational coming-of-age drama with surprisingly harsh depictions of misogyny and physical and mental abuse, the other a sweet, good-natured romantic comedy nearly as innocent as a Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland vehicle from the 1940s. In their similarities and differences lies the key to why 1999 was such a great year for movies of their type — the 1939 of teen movies.

The 1999 coming-of-age comedy "American Pie" was a massive hit when it was released in 1999. Starring a who's-who of upcoming teen talent, "American Pie" delved deeply into the more embarrassing sexual details of being an adolescent boy in the modern day. There were scenes involving bodily fluids, oral sex, and multiple references to creative masturbation. While the bulk of the film -- written by Mike Herz and directed by Paul Weisz -- prided itself on aggressive raunchiness, it wisely ended on a sweet note, allowing the characters to realize that despite having had sex, they still have a lot to look forward to on their journey of growing up.
For a while in the early 2000s, Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Mena Suvari, Shannon Elizabeth, Seann William Scott, Thomas Ian Nicholas, and Natasha Lyonne were household names largely because of the "American Pie" movies. To date, the series has made $990 million.

The American Pie franchise has had a lasting impact due to its cast, originality, and memorable moments, making it the quintessential teen comedy. The best way to watch all the American Pie movies is either by release date or chronological order, simplifying the decision-making process. American Pie and American Pie 2 are the most successful entries in terms of box office gross, while American Wedding had the lowest earnings and weakest group dynamic.
Whether in chronological order or by release date, all nine movies in the American Pie franchise are sure to give viewers a good laugh. While the teen comedy genre has faded, American Pie left a strong impression on audiences largely because of its cast, originality, and ridiculously memorable moments. Even though other teen comedies, like Not Another Teen Movie, She's All That, and Get Over It, have their supporters, American Pie reigns supreme as the quintessential teen comedy franchise.

The coming-of-age film American Pie was one of the surprise hit movies of the 1999 film season. Fans quickly became invested in a group of high school friends and their families in the Jason Biggs, Eugene Levy, and Jennifer Coolidge-led big-screen success. Two years later, American Pie 2 revisited the friend group, now college students. However, when the third sequel, American Wedding, was filmed in 2003, many cast favorites were missing. Why was that so?
Why were so many of ‘American Pie’s’ original cast members not a part of ‘American Wedding?’
In 2003, producers of the American Pie film franchise orchestrated the wedding of Jim Levenstein (Jason Biggs) and Michelle Flaherty (Alyson Hannigan) as the centerpiece of American Wedding. The movie intended to bring together the cast of the first two installments as a love letter for the characters and film fans who supported the franchise since 1999.

American Pie is one of those cult classic movies that anyone who grew up in the 1990s has probably seen — many times. It was known for its humor and certainly catered to a more adult audience, but it was loaded with characters that nobody could ever forget.
While it’s been nearly 25 years since the movie was released, some of the actors have remained household names. Where is the American Pie cast today?
The ‘American Pie’ cast in 2012 | Kevin Winter/Getty Images Where is Jason Biggs today?
Jason Biggs was the film’s main star, and he went on to act in movies far beyond American Pie. There have been plenty of film sequels, and he starred in the first four movies, up until 2012. He appeared in films including Eight Below and My Best Friend’s Girl, the latter of which is where he met his now-wife, Jenny Mollen. Today, Biggs is worth about $20 million,...

Jamie Lynn Spears plays Noreen Fitzgibbons on Sweet Magnolias. The character started out as a nurse who had an affair with the married Bill Townsend (Chris Klein). The Netflix show returned with season 3 in July. But fans will have to wait for more because of the writer's and actor's strike and actors are currently not allowed to work or promote their work at this time. In the midst of a festival setting, catching up with all the best of world cinema and the contemporary avant-garde, you basically hope––sometimes even luckily have––your notion of the moving image genuinely challenged. So you might forget what it’s like to engage with a well-made “nice and normal” movie that frankly works. Basically exactly what you would expect, Alexander Payne’s newest film The Holdovers, directed from a script not written by him––the signs of a good-behavior assignment to make up the critical and commercial failure of his ambitious passion project Downsizing––lives up that notion.

Good versus evil is a tricky game in the fictional town of Serenity, South Carolina, where we follow best friends Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Helen (Heather Headley), and Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) in Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias. Throughout three seasons, we have seen there’s no logical path as to who can find redemption for their terrible acts. For instance, Maddie’s ex-husband Bill (Chris Klein) continues to be villainized for his mistakes — and even wrongs he had no clue about, like the existence of his firstborn child — with no path to follow to make things right. He’s been ousted from his children’s lives, including his newborn daughter’s, and the series feels this is justified. Meanwhile, the woman he cheated with and left his family for, Noreen (Jamie Lynn Spears), has received a full pardon and is even working for Maddie at the Corner Spa. Simply put,...

In Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias, the fictional small town of Serenity, South Carolina, is filled with dozens of beloved — and not so beloved — characters that we’ve come to know over the last three seasons. New characters have come into the fold, while it seems like a couple may be leaving by the end of the Season 3 finale, and the fate of fan-favorite Trotter (Hunter Burke) is up in the air. From the eyes of best friends Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott), and Helen Decatur (Heather Headley), we’ve seen the good and bad of the town and many of the characters, allowing for even the minute supporting characters to have quite a bit of depth. Noreen (Jamie Lynn Spears), for instance, has experienced tremendous growth and it’s a blessing that she wasn’t written out of the show after she left Bill (Chris Klein...

Romance plays a major role in Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias. In fact, it is the primary plot point for many of our beloved Serenity residents, including the signature trio — Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Helen Decatur (Heather Headley), and Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott). Maddie’s blossoming romance with Coach Cal (Justin Bruening) has taken some massive swings, especially after his rage issues became a conflict in the second season. But, in Sweet Magnolias Season 3, they come together after working on themselves, now even stronger. Likewise, after much work and deliberation, Dana Sue and Ronnie (Brandon Quinn) renew their vows and showcase their beautiful connection. On the other end of things, Helen has a disastrous reunion with her on-and-off-again lover Ryan (Michael Shenefelt), leaving her brokenhearted once again. They aren’t the worst couple in the third season, though, not by a long shot. That (dis)honor goes to the...

In Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias, the titular trio — composed of Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Helen Decatur (Heather Headley), and Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott) — use their respective talents to brighten and clean up their hometown of Serenity, South Carolina. At the same time, these lifelong best friends rely on each other and the comfort of their long-term friendship to get them through the trials and tribulations that life throws at them, as we see from the very start of the series premiere as Helen represents Maddie in her ongoing divorce from her cheating husband Bill (Chris Klein). The series has never shied away from showing how loving this friendship is and how devoted these women are to one another. However, now three seasons and 30 episodes in, there are many reasons it feels like it’s time to expand this trio and bring another member into the tight-knit fold.

Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias digs into the triumphs and defeats of small-town living in the fictional Serenity, South Carolina. When the series begins, best friends Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Helen Decatur (Heather Headley), and Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott) are facing their own various struggles. Maddie is dealing with the fallout of her husband Bill (Chris Klein) cheating on her with nurse Noreen (Jamie Lynn Spears), getting her pregnant, and abandoning her and their three children. Dana Sue is still struggling with her husband’s infidelity — which resulted in her throwing Ronnie (Brandon Quinn) out — and having a disastrous experience with a horrible employee at her restaurant. Their stories have continued to progress in ways that have left the characters better off, but Helen’s story throughout all three seasons of the show has been one missed opportunity after another.
