Exclusive: Maggie Q is set to headline Prime Video’s Untitled Renée Ballard series, a Bosch spinoff about the LAPD’s Cold Case Division. This marks the first series in Amazon MGM Studios’ Bosch franchise, inspired by the work of bestselling author Michael Connelly, which is not led by Titus Welliver. Amazon declined comment.
The untitled series follows Detective Renée Ballard (Q), who is tasked with running the LAPD’s new cold case division—a poorly funded, all-volunteer unit with the largest case load in the city. Ballard approaches these frozen-in-time cases with empathy and determination. When she uncovers a larger conspiracy during her investigations, she’ll lean on the assistance of her retired ally, Harry Bosch (Welliver), to navigate the dangers that threaten both her unit and her life.
Connelly, Michael Alaimo, and Kendall Sherwood executive produce. Henrik Bastin and Melissa Aouate executive produce for Fabel Entertainment, with Jasmine Russ as co-executive producer.

The series will follow Ballard as the leader of LAPD’s new cold case division – “a poorly funded, all-volunteer unit with the largest case load in the city. Austin, Texas — Patton Oswalt, Phoebe Robinson, Eric Andre, Chelsea Handler and others were in fine form on Friday night as Variety helped kick off the 2023 SXSW festival and conference with its Power of Comedy event.
The kudos pay tribute to innovators in the business of being funny. Presenters and honorees who gathered at the Creek and the Cave nightclub in downtown Austin made mention of comedians facing a fraught moment as social norms and cultural attitudes are changing.
Mike Lawrence, who tag-teamed with Nick Thune as host for the night, noted that he had to show more identification when registering to get his SXSW conference badge than he would have to buy a gun.
“In Texas it’s harder to get a festival badge than to get a gun,” Lawrence said. “Go to a gun store and tell them ‘I hate Jews,’ you get a gun. Go to registration and say ‘I’m an artist.

Currently untitled, the two series in development at Amazon are based on characters created by Michael Connelly in his series of Henry Bosch detective novels. Amazon is developing two new series set within the “Bosch” universe.
Variety has learned that Amazon Studios is currently developing shows based on the Michael Connelly characters Jerry Edgar and Renee Ballard. Edgar was portrayed by Jamie Hector throughout the seven season run of “Bosch,” while Ballard has never been featured onscreen before. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Hector is poised to reprise the role of Edgar in the new show.
The move to expand “Bosch” is not unexpected. The original series ran for seven seasons on Prime Video until 2021, making it the longest-running Amazon series to date. The spinoff series “Bosch: Legacy,” which saw Titus Welliver return as Harry Bosch, debuted on Amazon Freevee in 2022. A second season is slated to premiere in fall 2023. It has not yet been decided if the two new shows, should they be picked up to series, would air on Prime Video or Freevee.

Amazon, which has already spent piles of money on rights to build Lord of the Rings and Tomb Raider franchises, is expanding its Bosch world with two more shows in the works.
The retail giant’s in-house studio has put spinoffs revolving around star Jamie Hector’s Detective Jerry Edgar and the yet-to-be cast LAPD Detective Renee Ballard, the latter of whom is a prominent character in exec producer/author Michael Connelly’s novels.
The untitled J. Edgar and Renee Ballard shows are the third and fourth projects in Amazon’s larger Bosch franchise. The flagship series ran for seven seasons on Amazon proper and starred Titus Welliver as the titular cop. A spinoff featuring Welliver and Hector, Bosch: Legacy, will launch its second season on Amazon’s free ad-supported television platform, Freevee.
It’s unclear if the two new projects, both of which are currently in the development stages,...

In assembling its annual list of the 50+ men and women who matter most in comedy today, The Hollywood Reporter surveyed the top performers, writers, producers, showrunners and execs in the industry to get their read on how the business of making people laugh is evolving. Below, long-established superstars (e.g. Will Ferrell, Maya Rudolph, Kevin Hart), as well as some of this year’s breakouts (e.g. Kate Berlant and John Early, and the makers of smash hit half-hour The Bear) share their thoughts on the most played-out punchlines, offer their best ideas for getting comedies back in theaters, and assess what can safely be joked about these days. (For many, the answer on that last count remains: everything!) We also asked them to reveal more personal information, such as their secret sources of inspiration, and funniest mean thing ever said about them.

Against the star-spangled, quilted backdrop of what looks like it could be a friendly, amateur Fourth of July talent show, Jane Fonda, Donald Sutherland, and the company of the Fta Show raise their fists and middle fingers to the United States Armed Forces. They’re accompanied by the raucous cheers from thousands of enlisted service members who make up a fraction of the reported 64,000 total GI attendees over the course of the Fta Show’s tour through U.S. military bases in Hawai’i, the Philippines, and Japan. At each station they delight in having an outlet to tell their employers to screw off and set the date to get them back home.
It’s hard to call an anti-Vietnam doc anyone’s idea of a good time, which is the exact expectation F.T.A—the film, the show it documents, and the stars of both—so brilliantly subverts to its advantage.

All but inventing the ‘new liberal exposé’ suspense format, James Bridges’ smart and effective thriller began as a star showcase with a political message. Its fictional nuclear accident hit screens just before a similar real nuclear accident happened in real life, at Three Mile Island. Historical synchronicity? Box office serendipity? One thing is certain — the show strongly affected the way we view the ‘miracle’ of nuclear-generated power.

The '90s was great for many things - fashion, music, movies, and most importantly, an incredible amount of small-screen talent.
They were Tiger Beat gorgeous - all of them - but they had the ambition and skills to stick around and not fade into obscurity.
It's hard to believe how many amazing stars popped up over the decade, and still pop up on our televisions today!
If we've forgotten your favorite, feel free to add them in the comments below!
1. Mark Paul Gosselaar - Saved by the Bell Just as Ginny Baker had Mike Lawrence on her wall as a young girl, what girl didn't have Mark Paul Gosselaar on hers? Zack Morris had cool hair, a cool cell phone, and a killer band (Zack Attack Forever)! He's never left TV, moving from Bayside to NYPD Blue to Franklin & Bash, and now crushing it as the aformentioned Mike Lawrence on Pitch.
