While earth's mightiest heroes still need to deal with Loki and his Alien army while suppressing their own ego's and working together as a team, this has not stopped director Joss Whedon discussing ideas on what shape a Avengers sequel would take, when asked about it by SFX he had this to say:
"By not trying to. By being smaller. More personal, more painful.
"By being the next thing that should happen to these characters, and not just a rehash of what seemed to work the first time. By having a theme that is completely fresh and organic to itself.

The first Avengers film doesn't come out until May 4th, but Joss Whedon is already thinking and talking about where he would like to see a sequel go. We know that we will see an Avengers 2 happen, as the first film is guaranteed to be a huge success. Whedon had some very interesting things to say about his vision for the sequel saying, The Avengers needs to be "smaller" and "more personal."
That in itself is an interesting statement because usually a sequel to a movie of this magnitude would end up being even bigger than the first. Of course, as we've seen with big tentpole sequels in the past, that has proved to be not very effective because there are things lost when you go bigger. When asked about how he would top The Avengers he said,

Joss Whedon has said that a sequel to The Avengers would need to be "smaller" and "more personal". The Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator told SFX that he doesn't want a follow-up to "rehash" what worked in the first film. Asked how Avengers 2 could top next month's superhero blockbuster, Whedon responded: "By not trying to. By being smaller. More personal, more painful. "By being the next thing that should happen to these characters, and not just a rehash of what seemed to work the first time. By having a theme that is completely fresh and organic to itself."
Whedon joked that a sequel could take heed from crime classic The Godfather II "by having flashbacks to young Michael Andolini escaping Sicily to come to New York, where he will be called Corleone". (more)...
