- Meghan Andrews was born and raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York. Her father George is a Jazz composer, arranger and producer, and her mother Jo is a vocalist and songwriter of Jazz, SynthRock and Psychedelic Folk music.
Meghan began working in the entertainment business at the age of 8 as a jingle singer. There were a handful of young children in New York then who could sing a song in its entirety after hearing it through once, Meghan was one of those children. Her first acting role was in the musical "The Secret Garden," playing the first incarnation of the lead role of Mary in a two week staged reading produced by Jujamcyn Productions, in Saratoga Springs, NY. In that production, Meghan acted and sang alongside Victoria Clark, Kim Crosby, and Bob Westenberg, and in later years would go on to train with their vocal coach Edward Sayegh in Los Angeles.
After "The Secret Garden," Meghan was asked by Lifetime Actors' Studio member Kathleen Frasier to work on and put up a scene from "The Miracle Worker" for a session at The Actors' Studio in New York. It was a hugely cathartic experience for Meghan, solidifying her love and talent for the craft of acting. The session that day was moderated by Arthur Penn, and seated by his side was Estelle Parsons. Impressed with Meghan's capabilities, Estelle cast her in a production of "Forgiving Typhoid Mary" at The George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, NJ. Meghan played Sarah, a young girl dying of Typhoid given to her by her Nanny, an unsuspecting carrier of the disease, played by Parsons. Nearly all of Meghan's many scene in the play were two person scenes played with Estelle Parsons, this was Meghan's very first dramatic play.
After "Forgiving Typhoid Mary," Meghan was cast on Broadway as the understudy of the role of Ruthie Joad in Steppenwolf Theater Company's production of "The Grapes of Wrath," alongside Gary Sinese, Lois Smith, John C. Reilly and Terry Kinney. She left the production after being cast in the role of Mallory Pike in the Scholastic and eventual Disney Channel television series "The Baby-Sitters Club." Following The success of the BSC, Meghan was cast in the role of Beauty Weed in the NBC Multi camera Pilot "Flesh-N-Blood," directed by Jim Burrows and starring David Keith and Peri Gilpin.
...All this solidified Meghan's place in entertainment business and all before the age of 13...
After a season in Los Angeles, Meghan returned home to New York and began to be more interested in school and her friends than in her chosen profession. She had a few parts over the next few years, but made a choice to be a kid while she could. She attended New York's High School of Music and Art where she studied Vocal Performance, and would revisit acting again when she was accepted into the Conservatory of Acting at SUNY Purchase in Westchester, New York.
It was at SUNY Purchase that Meghan would receive her formal acting training, most especially from her mentor Joan Potter, who was a student of Lee Strasberg's and a lifetime member of The Actors' Studio. During the summer months, Meghan studied Shakespeare in Oxford, England, at the British American Drama Academy with instructors including John Barton, Diana Quick and Richard Cotrell. Just before attending college, at the age of 17 Meghan began to teach herself to play the guitar, writing songs over the next many years about her life and experiences, inspired by the works of Joni Mitchell, Ani Difranco, Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin, The Indigo Girls and many others.
After graduating from SUNY Purchase Meghan began attending sessions at The Actors' Studio as an observer, a suggestion made to her by then artistic director Estelle Parsons. After a year of regularly attending session, Meghan auditioned and was given lifetime membership in 2003. Renewing her career as an adult actress took a couple of years in New York, but by 2005, after only a month of securing representation, Meghan was cast again alongside Lois Smith in The Signature Theatre Company's Production of Horton Foote's "The Trip to Bountiful." This production, directed by Harris Yulin, was overseen by Horton Foote himself. Meghan was fortunate enough to get to know the playwright very well, as he attended every performance and guided them at every rehearsal. Meghan was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award, for her work as Thelma in this production.
During the production schedule of "The Trip to Bountiful," Meghan found time to record her first compilation of original songs. This record entitled "Center of Gravity," was produced by Meghan and her mother and father, George and Jo D. Andrews. Playing on the record are such notable New York musicians as Steve Gadd, Jojo Kuo, Zev Katz, and Jerry Nywood. The record was independently released through CD Baby, as Meghan continued to play the east village downtown anti-folk clubs of New York City.
After the success of "The Trip to Bountiful," Meghan performed regionally all over the US, with roles in productions at The Goodman Theatre, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, The Fulton Opera House, Origin Theatre Company, and many others. She returned to George Street Playhouse in 2007, this time as an adult actress, playing Sister James opposite Ann Dowd in John Patrick Shanley's "Doubt." She enjoyed a large co-staring part on "Law & Order C.I." playing opposite Chris Noth, and in 2008 she returned to Broadway in "Frost/Nixon," starring Frank Langella and Michael Sheen. Later that year Meghan would tour the country in the "Frost/Nixon" National Tour.
After the final performance of "Frost/Nixon" Meghan boarded a flight that night to sing at Horton Foote's memorial service held at Lincoln Center. She sand "Clanging Bells of Time," Horton's favorite hymn. It was there that she reconnected with Loren Toolajian, Trip to Bountiful's musical director. Loren would go on to produce her second studio album, entitled "Lights Like This," along with Executive Producer Walter Sear. The record was recorded at Walter Sear's legendary studio, Sear Sound, in New York City.
After the completion of "Lights Like This," Meghan decided to spend more time in Los Angeles. Since then, she's enjoyed a small part on FX's "Justified," a small part in Universal Pictures "The Adjustment Bureau" playing opposite Emily Blunt, a lead in the ensemble indie feature film "Drifting," directed by lifetime Actors' Studio Member Anthony Caldarella, and a large role in the short film "The Big Swim." Theatrically, she performed in the two person play "Collected Stories" at The Rubicon Theatre, playing opposite Susan Clark. She played iconic working class Liverpudlian hair dresser and student of literature, Rita in Willy Russel's "Educating Rita," and was LA Arts pick of the week for her portrayal of Beverly in "Miracle on South Division Street" at the Colony Theatre in Burbank.
Meghan continues her vocal training with Broadway coach Edward Sayegh and is currently in production working on her third record, produced by Cookie Marenco of Blue Coast Records. Blue Coast specializes in High Resolution DSD recordings and recently showcased Meghan's singing and songwriting at T.H.E. Show Audiophile Conference in Newport. As an official Blue Coast Artist, Meghan has secured distribution through Blue Coast and her upcoming album will feature her song "99," which won the 2014 West Coast Songwriters Competition for Best Song.- IMDb Mini Biography By: Actor
