Few actors stack up against the greatness of Colin Farrell. The Irish actor rose to the top of Hollywood but struggled with alcohol and drugs. His comeback, beginning in 2008’s In Bruges, has resulted in an over fifteen-year run of greatness. As the lead of Sugar, a new series from Apple TV+, Farrell once again shines. Through empathy and kindness, he makes Sugar a uniquely human show. Yet, on occasion, the show dips into style over substance. It’s a huge win for Apple TV+ and for Noir fans everywhere.

Despite a well-earned vacation, Sugar cannot resist a call from Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell), a famed Hollywood producer. However, Siegel’s granddaughter Olivia has gone missing. A stylishly engaging and crisp neo-noir steeped in the hardboiled detective tradition, Apple TV+’s “Sugar,” starring Colin Farrell, is rather terrific—that is, until it’s not. Created by Mark Protosevich (“I Am Legend”) and fabulously directed by Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles (“City Of God”) and Adam Arkin (“The Offer”), “Sugar” is initially sleek and captivatingly crafted in its depiction of L.A.

Colin Farrell headlines detective drama Sugar for Apple TV+, and the first trailer has landed: more on it here.
Colin Farrell hasn’t been on our screens for a couple of years, after a barnstorming 2022 saw him reunite with Brendan Gleeson and writer and director Michael McDonagh for bleak comedy The Banshees Of Inisherin, don prosthetics to become unrecognizable as The Penguin opposite Robert Pattinson in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, and star alongside Viggo Mortensen and Joel Edgerton in Ron Howard’s survival drama Thirteen Lives.
He now takes a rare television role, leading the cast of Sugar, a detective drama, for Apple TV+. The synopsis reads as follows:

Since he made his Hollywood debut in the 2000 Vietnam War drama "Tigerland," Colin Farrell's career has had some downs and some ups. All in all, though, he's largely outgrown his 2000s playboy reputation and is deservedly recognized as one of the best movie stars we've got. Farrell's got the eloquent soul of an artist, the way only an Irishman does.
After Farrell's earlier and fruitless efforts to be an action hero, he's learned to not let his occasional franchise gigs distract him from more personal work. Not all his work is on film either. In 2024, he'll be returning to television with two crime drama roles.
He plays Oz Cobblepot in the Max series "Penguin," spinning out of his supporting role in 2022's "The Batman." Before he returns onscreen as the Penguin, though, he's going to star in (and executive produce) "Sugar" for competing streaming service Apple TV+.

It's likely well-known to Starwoids the world over that multiple now-famous actors initially auditioned to play the role of Han Solo in George Lucas' 1977 film "Star Wars." The role ultimately ended up going to Harrison Ford, but Kurt Russell, Nick Nolte, and Christopher Walken also tried out. One can also find old video footage of Charles Martin Smith reading for Luke Skywalker, and Perry King reading for Han. While both King and Smith are talented actors, looking at their audition tapes reveals why neither of them appeared in "Star Wars." They simply didn't have a good handle on the material in that audition. Ford, meanwhile, brought a certain "it-factor" quality that made him imminently magnetic.
King, however, wasn't left out of the "Star Wars" loop entirely. In 1981, writer Brian Daley and director John Madden adapted "Star Wars" into a 13-episode radio serial that broadcast on Kusc in Los Angeles. The...

Back in 1998, John Carpenter’s classic slasher Halloween got a “twenty years later” sequel called Halloween H20 (watch it Here) – and we’re now further removed from the release of H20 than it was from the release of the first Halloween. The film is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and as part of the celebration Paramount will be giving it a 4K steelbook release! The street date is September 26th, and copies can be pre-ordered at This Link. An image of the steelbook case can be seen at the bottom of this article.
Starring original Halloween heroine Jamie Lee Curtis, H20 acknowledged what happened in Halloween II (since Curtis was in it), but ignored the events of the Curtis-less parts 4, 5, and 6. Justine Lupe was at an afterparty at a “famous musician’s house” when she realized “Succession” was a hit. It was after the second season, and there had been an HBO event. The actress, who portrays escort-turned-fiancée Willa Ferreyra, was there with a few other “Succession” cast members.
“We were sitting in this little room and Nicholas Britell came in and started playing the music for the theme song and everyone at this party just went crazy,” Lupe said. “And they’re [in] uproarious excitement about hearing the song. And I just remember [thinking], ‘Whoa, I did not know that this was in the zeitgeist.’”
By now, everyone knows the opening tinkle of that discordant piano. The fourth and final season of the hit series about a family of absolutely awful people doing absolutely awful things is absolutely the drama of the moment. Fans obsess over the music and every little detail of the show.

The teaser trailer for The Night Agent begins with a phone ringing in the depths of the White House. An FBI agent looks shocked that someone’s calling this emergency line since it never rings. The agent answers it and finds himself plunged into a terrifying conspiracy.
Creator, showrunner, and executive producer Shawn Ryan describes The Night Agent, based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, as All the President’s Men with car chases. Speaking with Netflix’s Tudum, Ryan teased, “If you like the Jack Ryan books, the Jack Reacher books, if you like the Bourne Identity stuff, if you like political intrigue, then The Night Agent is for you.”
Ryan also confirmed that FBI Agent Peter Sutherland (played by Gabriel Basso) is just a well-trained man, not a superhero. “He’s very much an underdog in the middle of all this. He’s someone who, when he’s in a fight,...

A new episode of The Black Sheep video series has arrived online this morning, and with this one we’re looking back at director Steve Miner‘s 1999 killer crocodile horror comedy Lake Placid (watch it Here). To find out why we think Lake Placid deserves more love than it gets, check out the video embedded above!
Scripted by David E. Kelley, Lake Placid tells the following story: When a mysterious creature violently kills a man in a Maine lake, Jack Wells, the local game warden, looks into the bizarre case, along with Sheriff Hank Keough and visiting paleontologist Kelly Scott. Looking for clues in a tooth that the beast left behind, Kelly and the others eventually locate the monster, a massive and vicious reptile eager to devour anything in its path. Can the crocodile-like creature be stopped?
The film stars Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, Brendan Gleeson, Oliver Platt, Betty White,...

It’s time for a new episode of The Arrow in the Head Show, and in this one the show’s hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon, Lance Vlcek, and Tyler Nichols are looking back at the first Halloween movie to ignore previous sequels in order to bring Jamie Lee Curtis back into the franchise, Halloween H20 (watch it Here)! To find out what they had to say about H20, check out the video embedded above.
Released to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the original Halloween, H20 ignored the events of the Curtis-less parts 4, 5, and 6. Twenty years later, Curtis came back to Halloween again for a movie that would ignore every Halloween film except the original, H20 included.
Directed by Steve Miner from a screenplay by Robert Zappia and Matt Greenberg, with some uncredited script work by Kevin Williamson, Halloween H20 has the following synopsis:

Halloween as we know it has finally come to an end. No longer will The Boogeyman be haunting the streets of Haddonfield. With the release of Halloween Ends, and before the series is inevitably rebooted again, it’s time now to take stock of the franchise and its best moments. Over the course of 44 years, the Michael Myers saga has given us plenty of frights. There have been exciting highs and terribly grim lows. Through it all, there’s always been something worth talking about, no matter how divisive.
While the franchise’s carnage is always up for discussion, I wanted to focus in on those non-kill scenes一mostly, I may have snuck in one or two一that linger with you long after the movie has ended. From character monologues to heart-pounding chase sequences (and everything in between), this list celebrates the 20 best scenes in the Halloween universe, including a few from...

Here’s what happened. . . San Francisco Police Department detective Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) had his wife Trudy helping him to conquer many of his numerous phobias and extreme Ocd. She was then killed by a car bomb. It’s the one crime the brilliant detective can’t solve, catapulting him into a severe depression, making all of his fixations and neuroses even more extreme. Although he’s convinced he’ll never be happy again and knows it’s a jungle out there, he rejoins the world as a private detective, often consulting with the Sfpd and his former colleague Captain Leland Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine).
Poor Stottlemeyer is often exasperated by Monk, whose 312 phobias, extreme Ocd and obsession with his wife’s death sometimes hinder an investigation. But the homicide chief also acknowledges that Monk is the greatest living detective, with his idiosyncrasies giving him the ability to pick up details that others miss,...

After a lengthy journey that involved pacifying mercurial businessmen and mob bosses, navigating tricky politics and permits, and working hard to get Francis Ford Coppola (Dan Fogler) all the talent he needed past the studio, Al Ruddy (Miles Teller) and the team finally completed and released “The Godfather” in the season finale of “The Offer.”
(Spoiler alert: This article contains details from the season finale of “The Offer.”)
The final episode of the Paramount+ limited series offered some closure all around as the film premiered to critical acclaim, went on to win several of the big Oscars, including Best Picture, and set up the journey for the sequel. But the final episode also captured some sad partings, like when Bob Evans (Matthew Goode) saw his marriage to Ali McGraw (Meredith Garretson) conclude, Bettye McCartt (Juno Temple) left Al’s employ to start her own agency, and Al parted ways with...

“It’s one of the icons of contemporary American cinema and I felt a tremendous responsibility,” declares Oscar-nominated production designer Laurence Bennett (“The Artist) about the challenges of designing “The Offer.” “The first time they called about seeing if I was interested in designing the project, I told my agent no, I was not interested because it just felt like there was great risk involved with messing with the classics,” he admits, adding for our recent Q&a, “I just found so much humanity in all the individual stories and everyone had so much investment in the project; it was incredible.” We talked with Bennett as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2022 Emmy Awards contenders. Prolific actor and director Adam Arkin was uniquely suited to direct episode four of “The Offer,” about the making of 1972’s “The Godfather.” In that hour, streaming now on Paramount+, filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola (Dan Fogler) and producer Albert S. Ruddy (Miles Teller) finally meet with Marlon Brando (Justin Chambers), who auditions to play Don Corleone on the spot – and leaves the filmmakers almost speechless. It fell to Arkin to recreate that iconic and oft-discussed moment, but he knew where to start. After all, the three-time Emmy nominee as an actor who has directed episodes of some of the most acclaimed television shows in the last decade, including “Fargo” and “Succession,” had heard stories about what “The Godfather” star was like from his father Alan Arkin.
“Brando asked my father if he would come over and have dinner, just before he was going to do the film ‘The Freshman’ because...

Nicolas Cage has well and truly become one of those bankable stars once again. Don’t get me wrong though I don’t mean bankable as in he can bring in the box office dollars, I simply mean that you can always bank on going into a Nicolas Cage movie with little to no clue what kind of performance he is about to put in or even what the hell type of flick your about to watch. I mean seriously, the last three Cage movies I have watched saw him go from being a master Jiu Jitsu alien fighting badass; to a janitor; to a pig-owning chef. Nobody checks boxes quite like our man Nic Cage!

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review on the new release “Pig,” a Michael Sardoski film featuring Nicholas Cage. Available through Video-On-Demand beginning on August 3rd. .
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Nicolas Cage portrays a mountain man named Rob in remote Oregon, and has a pet pig that hunts what he sells for a living, truffles. That probably would be the story, until the pig is shockingly stolen. So Rob goes back to the city he used to live in, Portland, expecting help from his truffle buyer Amir (Alex Wolff) and Amir’s father Darius (Adam Arkin). What he doesn’t expect is a coming-of-terms with a former life.

When one first hears the logline for Pig, Michael Sarnoski’s debut as a feature director, they would be forgiven for making certain assumptions. The film is, technically speaking, about a loner played by Nicolas Cage in search of his prized truffle pig, which was kidnapped from his home in the woods by a couple of junkies. After that inciting incident, he will come out of self-imposed “retirement” and go on a quest that will take him into the very heart of his community’s dark underbelly.
On paper, it reads like a gonzo knockoff of Keanu Reeves’ John Wick movies in which a hitman also comes out of exile to avenge a murdered dog. This would likewise be in keeping with the current career trajectory which has taken Cage, an Oscar winning actor, into grindhouse detours like Mandy and Mom and Dad. However, the story that Sarnoski and his...

Two releases, very well reviewed and pretty widely available by recent specialty standards, look set to heat up the arthouse box office this weekend — Pig with Nicolas Cage in one of his best performances in years and Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain open on 600 and 952 screens respectively, and only in theaters.
Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville’s documentary about the late chef, writer and adventurer Bourdain is an intimate look at his rise to world-renowned cultural icon, capturing his presence, voice and inner demons. Vigorous marketing by distributor Focus Features was made possible by public familiarity with the Peabody and Emmy-award winning Bourdain, whose weekly series Parts Unknown moved to CNN in 2012 after running for years on Discovery’s Travel Channel (where it was called No Reservations). The intrepid master storyteller tragically took his own life in 2018 at age 61.

Neon has released the trailer for “Pig,” which follows Nicolas Cage on a rescue mission to find his swine friend.
Cage’s character, Rob, is a truffle hunter who lives alone in the Oregonian wilderness and enlists the help of a truffle salesman (Alex Wolff) to search for his beloved foraging pig after she is kidnapped.
While speaking to Variety’s Marc Malkin on the “Just for Variety” podcast, Wolff said that Cage became one of his “best friends” and “one of the most loyal people in my life” after working on “Pig” together.
“We talk almost every few days,” he said. “We text all day and he FaceTimed me like two days ago, and we really support each other and help each other with things. We started making the movie when we were both going through very similar personal things in our life and we bonded over it immediately...

"I'm looking for a truffle pig. Someone stole her." Neon has unveiled a trailer for the highly anticipated new Nicolas Cage movie titled Pig, which has been on the schedule for a while but hasn't premiered just yet. The film follows a truffle hunter who lives alone in the Oregonian wilderness who must return to his past in Portland in search of his beloved foraging pig after she's kidnapped. Pig is directed by Michael Sarnoski and stars Nicolas Cage, Alex Wolff, Adam Arkin, and Gretchen Corbett. The Italians usually use dogs for hunting truffles in Alba, but pigs are also just as common and have great noses, too. This looks like Nicolas Cage as a vegan John Wick getting back at the bastards who stole his prized truffle pig. Take them down!! This looks especially gnarly, and I can't wait to see it. I love how soft this trailer is,...

Man gave names to all the animals; director Michael Sarnoski saw fit to keep it simple. Pig, his directorial debut, finds truffle-hunting Nicolas Cage roaming the wilds of Portland for his beloved boar, kidnapped over reasons surely revealed to dramatic effect.
Because Cage is, put one way, difficult to comprehensively track nowadays, there’s temptation to lump this with the reams and reams (and reams) of regrettable credits populating Cage’s IMDb lately. Marking their second swine-related release of the year, Neon’s involvement would suggest something a cut above; we’ll let the first trailer be the judge of that.
With Alex Wolff and Adam Arkin populating the cast, Pig arrives on July 16. Watch the trailer below.
