With fears our winter travel will need a, let’s say, reconsideration, the Criterion Channel’s monthly programming could hardly come at a better moment. High on list of highlights is Louis Feuillade’s delightful Les Vampires, which I suggest soundtracking to Coil, instrumental Nine Inch Nails, and Jóhann Jóhannson’s Mandy score. Notable too is a Sundance ’92 retrospective running the gamut from Paul Schrader to Derek Jarman to Jean-Pierre Gorin, and I’m especially excited for their look at one of America’s greatest actors, Sterling Hayden.
Special notice to Criterion editions of The Killing, The Last Days of Disco, All About Eve, and The Asphalt Jungle, and programming of Ognjen Glavonić’s The Load, among the better debuts in recent years.

The 1948 courtroom drama, I, Jane Doe, directed by John H. Auer and starring the inimitable Ruth Hussey as a defense attorney who displays feminist tendencies before that word was in the public vernacular, is a well-acted, twisty-plotted, and entertaining B-movie flick from second-string studio Republic Pictures—except for one thing… the trial and all the aspects associated with it is absolute nonsense.
It’s as if screenwriter Lawrence Kimble made up a courtroom drama based on what he’d seen from other movies of that ilk without ever studying the law as it applies to a trial. In no way would our heroine, Eve Meredith Curtis (Hussey), be able to insist on a retrial of a convicted murderer on the basis that Ms. Doe had refused to reveal her real name or present a defense for herself in the first trial.

Among Martin Scorsese’s directing projects-in-progress are a new television show (“The Caesars”), plus films based on an Oklahoma murder mystery (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and the life of the 26th U.S. president (“Teddy”). He will also soon reunite with actors who delivered their most-acclaimed performances opposite his lens: “Casino” veteran Sharon Stone will star in a Scorsese film that’s still under wraps, while Robert De Niro’s ninth collaboration with the director — Netflix’s “The Irishman” — will be the priciest film of Scorsese’s career (reported budget: $140 million).
Still, the Oscar winner (“The Departed”) has set aside spare time for his signature cause: film preservation.
In his hometown next month, MoMA will host the second-half of its exhibition, “Martin Scorsese Presents Republic Rediscovered: New Restorations from Paramount Pictures.” The defunct studio Republic Pictures churned out 3,000 films and series, all of which are now property of Paramount.

Republic raids an early Rko talkie for a fantastic special effects sequence, and you won’t believe how it’s repurposed — in a story about a TV personality (in 1939!) taking on a corrupt political mob. New York crumbles and is then washed away — sort of. It’s yet another resurfacing of a title that not long ago we couldn’t see to save our cinema-curious souls.
