The 52-year-old Live! talk show host first joined the network in 2001, replacing Kathie Lee Gifford as the late Regis Philbin’s co-host on Live with Regis and Kelly.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” has been named the best original film screenplay of 2023 at the Writers Guild Awards, which were held on Sunday evening in Los Angeles and New York.

The win gives “Everything Everywhere” a sweep of the four major Hollywood guild awards: the Directors Guild, Producers Guild, Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild, where it won the ensemble cast award and set a record with four wins in the five SAG categories.

The win made the freewheeling indie film only the fifth film to sweep the major guilds since the SAG awards first handed out the ensemble award in 1995. The first four were “American Beauty,” “No Country for Old Men,” “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Argo,” all of which went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

If “Everything Everywhere” was a strong favorite to win that award going into this weekend, it will now be a commanding one heading into Oscar week.

Writers had to share the spotlight with independent filmmakers and sound designers last night, but they’ll have it all to themselves tonight when the 75th annual Writers Guild of America awards are officially unveiled.

The WGA Awards took place in concurrent ceremonies tonight at New York’s Edison Ballroom and Los Angeles’ Fairmont Century Plaza. Don’t look for four of the 10 Oscar nominees for screenplay (the original scripts for “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Triangle of Sadness” plus the adaptations of “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “Living” ) on the list of 2023 Writers Guild of America Awards nominations announced January 25. They didn’t qualify for consideration under the guild’s guidelines or those of its international partners.

The Original Screenplay frontrunner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is in contention for this guild award as are two of its Oscar rivals: “The Fabelmans” and “Tar.” The WGA race is rounded out by the scripts for “The Menu” and “Nope.”

The Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) and Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) announced the outstanding screenplay nominees for their annual Writers Guild Awards just one day after the 2023 Oscars nominations came out. Given the organization’s strict eligibility rules, the WGA has created interesting differences between its choices and the Academy’s this year.

Looking at the five WGA Original Screenplay nominees, only three were nominated for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar: “The Fabelmans,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “TÁR.” The difference could easily be chalked up to the fact that Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” and Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” were not eligible, as they were not written under the WGA’s Minimum Basic Agreement (Mba) or under a bona fide collective bargaining agreement of an international affiliate Guild.

Jeremy Clarkson has reportedly closed a restaurant at his Diddly Squat Farm in the Cotswolds, following a planning row.

The former Top Gear star, who now appears in Amazon Prime’sThe Grand Tourand Clarkson’s Farm, opened the venue in a barn last July, where there is also a farm shop.

The restaurant, which was situated in a field at the 1000 acre site, prompted protests from people living in the village of Chadlington.

Many locals claimed the restaurant led to disruption and heavy traffic, disturbing the peaceful rural area.

The restaurant was closed after an enforcement order from Cotswold council officials in August, with Clarkson initially determined to fight the decision. He argued that the venue did not break any planning rules.

The Sunday Mirror has now reported that Clarkson has given up. He wrote a letter to West Oxfordshire District Council, saying he had been “thwarted” by the enforcement notice.

Kaleidoscope arrives on Netflix on Sunday (1 January) with its unusual premise prompting raised eyebrows and questions from many viewers.

The crime drama – created by Matchstick Men author Eric Garcia – takes place over 25 years. It follows a group of masterful thieves, led by Breaking Bad star Giancarlo Esposito, who work together to pull off an elaborate heist.

Walters, the first woman anchor on an evening news broadcast, died aged 93 on Friday (30 December).

Following news of her death, tributes have poured in from industry figures including Oprah Winfrey and former CBS anchor Dan Rather.

Her death has also prompted the resurfacing of a clip from her 1987 interview with Connery.

In the clip, which has been viewed 5.1 million times at the time of writing, Walters questioned the actor over a Playboy interview in which he said he does not think there is “anything wrong with hitting a woman”.

The International Documentary Association (IDA) presented awards to the winners in 18 categories for the 38th IDA Documentary Awards on December 10, 2022 at the Paramount Theater in Los Angeles. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Rory Kennedy turns the camera on the devastating December 2019 volcanic eruption off the coast of New Zealand for Netflix’s latest documentary, “The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari.”

Kennedy directs and produces the film, which screened at AFI and Doc NYC ahead of the three-year anniversary of the tragic natural disaster that claimed 22 lives. Kennedy tracks the minute-by-minute unfolding of the eruption. The official synopsis reads: During a routine sightseeing day-trip to a remote volcanic island, 47 tourists and guides were trapped in the epicenter of a boiling pyroclastic surge of toxic dust and ash. Both terrifying and inspiring, the film uses first-hand accounts to convey the experience of living through such a lethal eruption.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Ron Howard both serve as executive producers, along with Brian Grazer, Jennifer Davisson, and Phillip Watson. Mark Bailey, Dallas Brennan Rexer, Sara Bernstein, and Justin Wilkes also produce.

Finding out that the Qi elves got something wrong is as oddly satisfying as watching a waiter drop a tray of glasses. It doesn’t happen that often, but when it does, it’s a sight to behold.

Series T of Qi is currently airing, with Sandi Toksvig once again steering the ship of Quite Interesting facts and Alan Davies still on board as regular panellist.

Before we add too many of their fun facts to our bank of things to impress with at parties (or more likely make us look like insufferable know-it-alls), let’s remind ourselves of the times Qi got it wrong.

Who knew harmless 1950s puppets Bill and Ben would end up the source of Qi controversy? In series B, Stephen Fry claimed the language these flowerpot men puppets spoke was called ‘Flobbadob’, named after the sound of the farts made by the creator’s brothers in their childhood baths.

Motsi Mabuse was made ‘upset’ by her mum’s critiques of her judging on Strictly Come Dancing, her sister Oti has said.

The South African dancer joined the Strictly judging panel in 2019, the same year that Oti lifted the Glitterball Trophy for the first time with partner Kelvin Fletcher.

Oti won again the following year with comedian Bill Bailey, but was eliminated fifth the following year with Ugo Monye.

Appearing on Saturday (19 November) night’s episode ofThe Jonathan Ross Show, dancer Oti – who joined the show in – described how her mum wasn’t impressed watching Motsi criticise Oti on screen.

East and her partner Vito Coppola had performed an elegant American smooth to “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid. Anderson and Giovanni Pernice, meanwhile, had spent a good portion of their samba to “Hakuna Matata” faffing around (as Len Goodman would have grumpily put it) dressed as a meerkat (Anderson) and a surprisingly curvaceous warthog (Pernice).

Now, you don’t need multiple Latin championship wins under your belt – as head judge Shirley Ballas has – to see that there was a clear winner to this “Battle of the Disneys” dance-off, and it wasn’t Anderson. Exclusive: Kino Lorber today announced that it has acquired worldwide rights to Rob Nilsson’s latest film Faultline, as well as his near complete filmography, including his 1979 feature Northern Lights, co-directed with John Hanson.

The Nilsson catalog will be available on Kino Now in 2023. Select titles will also be released theatrically. The deal for Faultline and the Rob Nilsson catalog was negotiated by Kino Lorber President & CEO Richard Lorber.

Faultline debuted at the Mill Valley Film Festival on October 11 and will receive a theatrical and digital release from Kino Lorber in 2023. Billed as a hypnotic experience about the raw, messy intimacy of family and the global impact of today’s conflicted society, Faultline is the third and final installment of Nilsson’s Nomad Trilogy, following Arid Cut and Divide. Faultline is written and directed by Nilsson. He also produced the pic with Zhan Petrov, Michelle Allen, Rusty Murphy, and John Stout.

First introduced in 2014, Strictly’s Movie Week sees the contestants perform a selection of dances inspired by the biggest Hollywood blockbusters, with comedy, action and kids films all being given the Strictly treatment over the years.

But what makes for a really good Movie Week performance? Looking the part is obviously key, and you can always expect this theme to bring out some of the best hair, make-up and costumes that Strictly has to offer.

Ultimately, however, it’s the dancing being marked, with the best performances managing to show off the celebrity’s skill – something they often haven’t quite found yet, with Movie Week usually coming around the third week in the competition – while also featuring choreography that captures the essence of the films they’re paying tribute to.

The first image has been released of Bill Bailey and Adjoa Andoh’s characters in upcoming BBC short film “The Smeds and The Smoos.”

Based on Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s picture-book of the same name, it tells the story of two warring families whose children, Bill and Janet, fall in love and run away together.

Hotly pursued by their grandparents, Grandfather Smed (Bailey) and Grandmother Smoo (Andoh), the two young aliens lead their families on a chase across space, giving them the opportunity to find out they have more in common than they think.

Rounding out the cast are Ashna Rabheru as Janet, Daniel Ezra as Bill, Rob Brydon as Uncle Smoo, Meera Syal as Aunt Smed and Sally Hawkins as the narrator.

The film, produced by Magic Light Pictures, will be released on BBC One and iPlayer this Christmas.

Comedian Jayde Adams has said that she’s prepared for judgemental comments when she performs on this year’s series of Strictly Come Dancing.

This year, the BBC show returns for its 20th anniversary series, presented once again by Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman.

The show announced its 2022 line-up in full earlier this month, from presenter Helen Skelton to singer-songwriter Fleur East.

The partnerships for each celebrity and the professionals were also unveiled during the launch over the weekend.

Adams, who is an actor, comedian and podcaster, was announced as part of the line up for this year’s show.

In an interview with The Guardian, Adams explained that she was ready for negative comments about her body: “A woman can’t be on television without one of two things happening: either someone saying she’s ugly or fat, or they send her really disgusting messages.”

Exclusive: Viva Kids has acquired North American distribution rights to Dragonkeeper, the animated action-adventure film from Spanish firm Guardián de Dragones and China Film Animation. Hulu will release domestically after the film’s theatrical bow, which is slated for August 2023. Based on the first book in Carole Wilkinson’s series of fantasy novels, the film follows Ping, a young orphan who must venture across ancient China to help the last surviving dragons from extinction. Across her wild and dangerous journey Ping finds a way to unlock her power and discover that she is a true dragonkeeper. The hit BBC reality series has unveiled a whole new roster of contestants for 2022, including TV presenters, athletes, and pop stars.

Among the lineup of contestants is comedian and actor Jayde Adams.

Born in Bristol, Adams worked as a cabaret artist and Adele impersonator before turning to stand-up comedy.

She is a staple of the Edinburgh Fringe festival, where she recently performed her show Men, I Can Save You. You can read The Independent’s four-star review of the show here.

As an actor, she’s performed in Alma’s Not Normal, while she has a starring role in forthcoming Take That film Greatest Days and has written and starred in her own ITV sitcom Ruby Speaking, out next year.

A documentary about the rehab center turned cult Synanon is in production at HBO Documentary Films, Variety has learned exclusively.

Spanning more than three decades until the early 1990s, Synanon originated as a Santa Monica-based storefront rehab and was celebrated both as a breakthrough treatment center and a culturally forward attempt at communal living. Led by the charismatic Chuck Dederich and his wife Betty, Synanon was a darling of the recovery community as well as the political and celebrity elite. But the organization began to transform over time, first becoming a church and later engaging in cult-like activity and extreme behavior that culminated in an attempted murder charge and the dissolution of the enterprise.

The untitled documentary will include first-person accounts from members and critics who experienced the events, and will feature never-before-seen archival material that chronicles the organization’s high-minded aspirations as well as its explosive end.
