If filmmaking is a puzzle, casting is a corner piece that, when chosen correctly, helps hold everything together. I recently told you about Coil’s Hellraiser soundtrack that almost was, but what about the cast? Clive Barker captured lightning in a bottle with his 1987 directorial debut, but here are some casting choices that could have impacted Hellraiser significantly.
Doug Bradley as Mover
Barker has known Doug Bradley since high school, so he allowed him his choice between two roles in Hellraiser: the Lead Cenobite or one of the mattress movers. As this was his first film, Bradley nearly chose to play the mover, because he thought it was important for the audience to see his face.
Thankfully, Bradley decided on the Lead Cenobite, and the rest is history. He became a horror icon, reprising the role in the next seven sequels, while Dave Atkins and Oliver Parker (who went on...

Hulu has announced that its reimagining of the 1987 horror classic Hellraiser will debut exclusively on the streamer in the U.S., as part of its annual “Huluween” celebration of fright-filled content, on October 7.
The original film, which introduced horror fans to the iconic monster known as Pinhead, watches as a woman comes upon the newly resurrected, partially formed body of her brother-in-law. She then starts killing for him to revitalize his body, so that he can escape the demonic beings that have been pursuing him after he himself made his way out of their sadistic underworld. Clive Barker directed the pic from his own script, which was itself based on his 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart, with Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, Andrew Robinson, Sean Chapman, Robert Hines, Doug Bradley, Nicholas Vince, Simon Bamford, Grace Kirby and Oliver Smith starring.

Writer’s Note: This is the second part of our 25th Anniversary retrospective for Nightbreed which celebrated its monumental birthday yesterday. You can check out part one Here.
Nightbreed may not have necessarily been a huge commercial and financial success upon its release in February 1990, but it was a hugely important film for many reasons. At a time when horror was mostly focused on sequels and slasher-centric types of stories, Clive Barker dared to not only make a film about monsters, but make a film about monsters who were also heroes, which was a remarkable feat in itself.
Something else Nightbreed is fondly remembered for by fans of Barker’s horror fantasy is the wonderfully visceral and intricate special effects work on the film by the aforementioned Bob Keen. Both Hugh Ross (“Narcisse”) and Simon Bamford (“Ohnaka”) recalled their two pivotal scenes that involved some of Keen’s effects magic-...

Today, Clive Barker’s wildly imaginative Nightbreed celebrates its 25th anniversary. While that is a remarkable feat in itself, the journey that the film has taken over the years has become the project’s enduring legacy within the horror genre. The recent Director’s Cut release of Nightbreed has been the ultimate vindication for Barker, who saw his vision snapped away decades ago from producers who believed they understood the world of Midian- and all its monsters- better than their creator.
Of course, that wasn’t the case, as Nightbreed received a disastrous response when it arrived in theaters, maligned mostly for its lack of subtlety and nuanced storytelling that was found within the pages of Barker’s original novella, Cabal. When Barker decided to move forward on adapting his work for the big screen, he was quick to rely on his some of his very closest friends to bring...

Bizarre AC II took place June 13-15 at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, and Dread Central went down-the-shore to check it out! Here's our event report plus an overflowing image gallery.
Having traveled to different conventions across the country, I am always searching for that old-school vibe I felt back in the 90’s. I would go to every NYC Weekend of Horrors starting at the age of 14 with my horror-loving father, Joseph Buckley (a man who used to buy Don Post Frankenstein masks from Famous Monsters to scare the kids with in the Heights of Jersey City but would not get the Monster inked on him while in the Navy because he thought it would upset his dad).
Bizarre AC II had that feeling… the feeling of the old ways, the old time when horror was new and everything you saw was not readily available from an online chain store.

“We have such sights to show you.” This chilling line from Pinhead can now be applied to Studiohouse Designs, as they have a new Hellraiser print for Clive Barker fans to set their sights on. Featuring the infamous Lament Configuration along with Pinhead and his Cenobite companions, this print from Studiohouse Designs will be released exclusively at New Jersey’s Bizarre AC’s Hellraiser reunion next week.
Available in two different formats, the regular silver print and the red variant print, this Hellraiser artwork gives you an up-close look at the folded-out Lament Configuration, the key to a whole new world of pain, as well as head shots of the four original Cenobites: Butterball, Pinhead, the Chatterer, and the Female. Both prints display the line “Demon To Some, Angel To Others” across the top and “Hellraiser” across the bottom, followed by the line “”Jesus Weeps Again, Bizaare AC 2014″ printed at the very bottom.

Monster-Mania is taking place this weekend in Cherry Hill and those who attend will be able to meet dozens of horror guests, including cast members from Hellraiser and The Walking Dead. While Clive Barker was scheduled to appear, he had to cancel due to his recent health issues. However, there is still a Hellraiser 25th Anniversary reunion taking place with Doug Bradley, Ashley Laurence, Claire Higgins, Andrew Robinson, Barbie Wilde, Nicholas Vince, and Simon Bamford.
If you’re looking to meet some of the cast from The Walking Dead, the following actors are scheduled to appear: Norman Reedus, Jeffrey DeMunn, Lauren Cohan, Steven Yeun, Madison Lintz and Emma Bell. There are over a dozen additional horror guests, and there will be plenty of vendors selling horror collectibles and other merchandise.
Screenings include the new Cabal Cut of Nightbreed, along with A Nightmare on Elm Street 3, Scream, Carrie, Night of the Living Dead (1990) and more.

As Sheffield’s premier horror film festival, Celluloid Screams, gears up for its fourth year of delivering the scares this October 26th-28th, we got word on the first batch of announced screenings taking place amidst a packed programme of previews, special guests and more. Check it out!
Feature Films
Special Event: Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut
(UK/USA) – Dir. Clive Barker / Restoration Director. Russell Cherrington
The turbulent production of Clive Barker’s Nightbreed is the stuff of legend, and the film released in 1990 was a far cry from Barker’s original novella, with many significant scenes excised by the film’s producers. Presumed lost for over twenty years, the footage surfaced in the form of two separate workprints and has been integrated with scenes from the original theatrical version to create The Cabal Cut – a fully fleshed-out monster epic that captures Clive Barker’s original vision in vivid detail.

A short while ago I had the pleasure of sitting down (via skype) to chat with Simon Bamford, who portrayed the Butterball Cenobite in 'Hellraiser' I and II as well as Onaka in 'Nightbreed.' Bamford, a very polite and funny man, is incredibly fun to talk to, as you can see below. You can find him at and follow him at @simonbamford on twitter. Robert Morris from Smudge Film Productions UK got in touch today to provide Dread Central with a first look at some really cool conceptual artwork for director Shaun Robert Smith's upcoming The 4th Reich. We definitely like what we see!
According to Morris, "Things are really hotting up in 'The 4th Reich' camp with filming scheduled to start in mid-April and pre-production in full swing. Shaun has been busying himself with make-up tests, location recces and 3D tests, etc."
As reported previously, Tom Savini, Sean Pertwee, Axelle Carolyn, Simon Bamford, and Craig Conway have all come on board to take part in the mayhem. One of the most exciting aspects of this project is that the team intend to "nail" the historical facts by making a war movie with zombies. Dig on the artwork below the synopsis:

Earlier this year, Fango exposed readers to a short film winning much acclaim in the UK titled The Soldier (you can read about it here). At the time, it was hinted that the movie might spawn a full-length feature, and Fango got word from director Shaun Robert Smith that The 4th Reich is moving ahead, shooting next spring with some pretty big names and exciting prospects.
“This is going to be the mother of all zombie films,” Smith tells Fango; he also passed on the production art seen here. “Not just that, but a heavy historical aspect too; you could say we are working on a war film with zombies. And to add to the joyride, it’ll be in 3-D! In fact, we will be one of the first 3-D films to emerge from the UK ever.”

Nazis are back in fashion! Well, in the movies, anyway. For a while it seemed like Second World War movies were history, but there are signs of an upsurge in this sub-genre. And we're not talking Saving Private Ryan or The Thin Red Line here. Filmmakers are suddenly taking the war not quite so seriously again. Currently Inglorious Bastards is getting bums on theatre seats and Tarantino's latest is following in the jackboot steps of Tom Cruise's thriller Valkyrie. Elsewhere on this site, you will find coverage of Iron Sky, a Second World War sci-fi comedy that is on the way from the makers of the Star Wreck series of Star Trek spoofs.

As the resident Dread Central zombie aficionado, I'm always on the lookout for the next flesh-tearing fright fest for you guys. Over the last couple of years the Nazi zombie sub-genre has become pretty hot. With director Shaun Robert Smith's The 4th Reich, it looks like it may have just reached its boiling point.

A new trailer for Clive Barker’s Book of Blood is now online. The film, directed by John Harrison, is based on Barker’s short stories "On Jerusalem Street" and "The Book of Blood" and arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray in September. Harrison penned the screenplay with Darin Silverman. In the film, a paranormal expert discovers a house that is at the intersection of so-called "highways" transporting souls in the afterlife. It stars Jonas Armstrong, Sophie Ward, Doug Bradley, Simon Bamford and Paul Blair.

John Harrison's adaptation of Clive Barker's Book of Blood got itself a drippy new red band trailer today that's sporting quite a bit of squishy stuff. We like.
In Book of Blood paranormal researcher Mary Florescu's investigations lead her to Simon McNeal, a college student who appears to be channeling messages from the dead. As their erotic relationship develops, the line between the worlds of the living and the dead become blurred and finally collapse in a stunning and astonishing climax.
The film, which stars Jonas Armstrong, Sophie Ward, Doug Bradley, Simon Bamford, and Paul Blair, hits DVD and Blu-Ray on September 22.

Looks like Tarantino isn't the only filmmaker working on grindhouse Nazi war films. Director and horror fanatic Shaun Robert Smith is in development on his next feature, The Fourth Reich, a terrifying adventure built on the Nazi human experiments during the war. Shaun's runaway success of The Soldier, his 2007 award winning short attracted some attention from producers and a multi-million dollar budget. Sean Perwee has been confirmed to star as one of the main protagonists, and special effects legend Tom Savini will make a cameo. He will play a Nazi, alongside Simon Bamford (Butterball in Hellraiser). The young director has surrounded himself with an all star team of horror genre specialists. Included are members of the special effects team of the latest Rambo film and the acclaimed director of photography, Peter Hannan, (Monty Python's Meaning of Life, Children of Men, and Withnail). One of the most anticipated horror films of...

Over the past few years, Nazis seem to be finding their way into more films then ever before, regardless of the genre. Mentions of the regime have turned up in the most unlikely of places; Kate Winslet won the Oscar for her portrayal of a Nazi in The Reader, Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlet Johansson in full dress in The Spirit, Brad Pitt and Eli Roth battling them in Quentin Tarantino’s extremely anticipated Inglorious Basterds, not to mention the Norwegian horror/comedy mash-up Dead Snow. And in a few months, director Shaun R. Smith will be unleashing his feature length Nazi zombie opus The 4th Reich on the world. But before there was the feature, there was the short: The Soldier.
A cross between 28 Days Later and Saving Private Ryan, the short was created in conjunction with the 2007 2 Days Later Short Film Competition, and in the end scooped up a number of prizes.

In his Outside the Box interview featurette on the new DVD of Hellbound: Hellraiser II (coming December 30), director Tony Randel states that releasing the movie at Christmastime 20 years ago was “a huge mistake” on New World Pictures’ part. Fortunately, the video market is more forgiving than the theatrical one, so presumably he has no objections to Anchor Bay’s disc arriving in time to spread a little post-Yuletide anti-cheer.
This Anniversary Edition is also appearing long enough after the Bay’s previous release of Hellbound that its supplemental pleasures more than temper any double-dipping pain. The movie deserves the revisiting, too, as it represents a best-case scenario for a horror sequel (or a follow-up in any genre, for that matter). Unlike the subsequent HELLRAISERs, which plunked Cenobite villain Pinhead (Doug Bradley) down in unrelated (and, as the series went on, pre-existing) scenarios, the Peter Atkins-scripted Hellbound directly continues the...

So the 5th annual Rock and Shock convention in Worcester, Ma has come and gone and I have to say, this show keeps getting better and better as its reputation grows and word spreads about it.
The big draw for this year’s show was Lost Boys star Corey Haim, who was joined by Aliens and Terminator badass Michael Biehn, a Hellraiser reunion that included Doug Bradley, Ashley Laurence, Simon Bamford and Barbie Wilde, Rock and Shock alum Jack Ketchum, Jason Mewes, Brian O’Halloran, Waxwork star Zach Galligan, and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper . That’s a damn fine lineup and actually only a partial list of horror luminaries fans finally got the chance to have some face time with.
