Three early Butthole Surfers releases are receiving vinyl repressings via Matador’s new reissue campaign of the band’s catalog spanning 1983 through 1991.
The first three reissues in the series include the band’s 1984 debut full-length, Psychic…Powerless…Another Man’s Sac, the 1984 Live Pcppep EP, and 1986’s Rembrandt Pussyhorse. Remastered audio of the entire reissue series is now available via digital platforms (listen below), with vinyl pressings of the three aforementioned albums due out March 22nd.
The reissue campaign will feature “a number of key catalog titles” by the Texas band, all remastered under the group’s supervision. More reissues are expected to drop in the fall, bringing Butthole Surfers’ early discography back into print. According to the Matador’s digital catalog of the reissues, these EPs and LPs are also a part of the campaign (listed chronologically): the self-titled EP (1983), Locust Abortion Technician (1987), Hairway to Steven (1988), Pioughd + Widowmaker!

After several years fronting gothy art-punks the Birthday Party, Nick Cave ventured out as a solo artist with a new band, the more traditionally rock-focused Bad Seeds, in 1983. In addition to his Birthday Party bandmate Mick Harvey, the longest tenured original member of the group was Blixa Bargeld, who played expressionistic guitar in the Bad Seeds as a side gig to his long-running industrial group, Einstürzende Neubauten.
During his 20-year Bad Seeds tenure, Bargeld cowrote a handful songs, including the haunting “Stranger Than Kindness,” and occasionally duetted with Cave, notably on “The Weeping Song.

Nick Cave will return to North America this fall with his unique question-and-answer tour, answering anything his fans dare to ask him. In between the unscripted interrogations, he’ll perform a few songs solo on his piano. He’ll kick things off on September 20th in Washington, D.C. and wrap the tour in Los Angeles on October 15th. Tickets will go on sale May 10th at 10 a.m. local time via Cave’s website.

Seeing Mr. Cave and The Bad Seeds' performance last night at the Beacon Theatre in New York City, I would agree. Playing every song from that album except "Rings of Saturn" plus another eleven classic songs (set list here) from his catalog, it was a show that will be difficult to rival by any touring act this year or quite possibly until Mr. Cave decides to tour again. Quite remarkable given that he's a few months shy of his 60th year on Earth.
Channeling both rage and ragged beauty, he is singer of staggering charisma. Plunging himself into the open arms of adoring fans almost from the start, his rich, booming baritone never missed a note in any of songs, even those...

My summer has been filled with deep loss. My younger brother David succumbed to major injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on June 1st. Along with the comfort and love from my family and friends, music was a necessary daily elixir. Now in its 9th year German Currents Festival of German Film is a fixture on the cultural calendar of Hollywood. Over the past years, thousands of audience members enjoyed Oscar-nominated German cinema, engaged in Q&As with top German talent, tasted German cuisine during the opening night gala and experienced contemporary German culture in the historical setting of the Egyptian Theater.
This year, German Currents will go beyond its regular film screenings, adding a pre-event on Oct. 5th with a screening of Sundance TV’s “Deutschland 83” followed by a Q&A with director Edward Berger and Golden Globe nominated composer Reinhold Heil. In addition, the festival will include a Tribute to Roland Emmerich and a Q&A with the filmmaker himself, added afternoon matinees throughout the weekend, the exhibit “Brilliant Dilletantes – Subculture in Germany in the 1980s” and a concert of the German Techno DJ, Westbam.
German Currents will also have its opening night red carpet event, followed by the film “We are Young, We are Free” (L.A. Premiere), plus Q&A’s with top German filmmakers, nightly screenings, including the Us Premiere of “B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West Berlin 1979 - 1989” and a free children’s morning screening of “The Pasta Detectives,” as well as a filmmaker brunch.

Three years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, anti-immigrant attacks targeting a refugee shelter on the outskirts of the former East German city of Rostock culminate in the notorious “Night of the Fire.” Following three days of violence, nearly 3,000 rioters, neo-Nazis and bystanders set fire to the shelter, trapping Vietnamese refugees and a group of journalists inside. Qurbani’s controversial film recounts the hours leading up the evening’s startling events as experienced by three very different characters: Lien, a young Vietnamese immigrant, caught in a struggle for survival; Stefan, an insecure youth, who, along with his friends participates in the night’s riots; and Stefan’s father Martin, an ambitious local politician torn between advancing his career by remaining silent, and standing up for his ideals, taking action to stop the riots. When Manuel is accidentally injured, Jack is blamed and is placed in a long-term foster care facility, leaving Manuel with their mother. Lonely, homesick and bullied by other children, Jack decides to escape and head home to Berlin, only to find that what little order he had established has crumbled. Once again abandoned by their mother, the boys take to the streets on a desperate odyssey to find not only their mother, but a sense of stability. Co-written by Nele Mueller-Stöfen, Berger’s screenplay and precise direction coax refreshingly unaffected performances from the two child actors. No longer models of efficiency both creak and groan under the strain of their daily duties. A man of few words, Schmitke leads a banal, solitary life, but, intrigued by reports of a hermit, known as “Bear-Man” found living alone in the woods; Schmitke begins to dream of deep, dark forests. When a model C 174 breaks down outside a small Czech town on the German border, Schmitke and his slacker subordinate Gruber are sent to repair it. Here, the engineers encounter an odd assortment of townspeople, and the undeniable allure and danger of the impenetrable Ore Mountain forest. The next day, Gruber mysteriously vanishes and Schmitke is drawn to the woods. Katharina Grischkowski’s extraordinary sound design, contrasts the creaking of the C 174 with the eerie stillness of the forest, heightening the surreal atmosphere provided by Christian Pirjol’s haunting cinematography. Roland Emmerich (Director/Writer/Producer) is one of the world’s most talented and sought-after directors. His career began in his native Germany. He studied film at the University of Television and Film Munich where his student film “The Noah’s Ark Principle“ went on to open the 1984 Berlin Film Festival. His body of work includes movies such as “Independence Day”, “Stargate”, “10,000Bc” and “White House Down”, to name just a few.
Emmerich recently wrapped “Independence Day: Resurgence”, the next epic chapter in the “Independence Day “universe. The original 1996 film redefined the event movie genre by shattering opening weekend and total box office records to become the first movie in history to gross over $500m internationally. The new film mixes a cast of new and familiar faces -- Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Jessie User, Bill Pullman, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward, and Judd Hirsh -- flashing forward 20 years when the nations of Earth must unite to protect the planet against the aliens' return and only a few brave men and women can bring the world back from the brink of extinction. Emmerich’s latest film, “Stonewall”, is a drama about the Stonewall Riots in 1969 New York, which sparked the Lgbt civil rights movement. The film stars Jeremy Irvine and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

An Essay-Film narrated by producer and musician Mark Reeder, B-Movie is a fast-paced collage of unreleased film and TV footage, photos, and original interviews compiled by Hoppe, Maeck, and Lange and dramatized scenes that illustrate Reeder’s account of the music, art and chaos in West Berlin of the 1980s. The walled-in city, which became a cultural inter-zone and creative melting pot for avant-garde sub- and pop- culture unlike anywhere else in Europe, attracted “brilliant dilettantes,” squatters, artists, musicians, and world famous celebrities alike. Reeder left Manchester, England for Berlin in 1979 and soon found himself at the center of this dynamic cultural hub, meeting and often working with legendary bands and artists. Hardly any DJ can look back on such a long and exciting career as Westbam, who since 1983 has provided the right music for the night for more than 15 million fans worldwide. A pioneer of DJ culture in Germany and Europe alike, Westbam was the first DJ in Germany to mix his own tracks rather than just play record after record, the first German DJ invited to play the big stages in the heyday of acid house in the UK, the first German DJ to sell over 2 million records, the founder of the first big rave event in Germany, the legendary “Mayday”, and the only DJ to have DJed at every “Loveparade,” producing every “Loveparade anthem” since. When Bianca, a newly hired younger female colleague, is sent to assist in the negotiations, her constant critique of her colleagues’ unscrupulous behavior with clients and hotel staff alike is unsettling to the executives, who pride themselves on their ability to remain emotionally disconnected. Confined within the walls of their hotel, the protagonists reach grotesque extremes, accentuating the feel of a chamber play within Stefan Weigl’s screenplay. The perfectly directed darkly comedic performances offer critique of contemporary global economics. When the dangers of the outside world (experienced only through the occasional sounds of distant explosions or gunfire) find their way inside, the three models turn out to be incompetent. This year, German Currents will go beyond its regular film screenings, adding a pre-event on Oct. 5th with a screening of Sundance TV’s “Deutschland 83” followed by a Q&A with director Edward Berger and Golden Globe nominated composer Reinhold Heil. In addition, the festival will include a Tribute to Roland Emmerich and a Q&A with the filmmaker himself, added afternoon matinees throughout the weekend, the exhibit “Brilliant Dilletantes – Subculture in Germany in the 1980s” and a concert of the German Techno DJ, Westbam.
German Currents will also have its opening night red carpet event, followed by the film “We are Young, We are Free” (L.A. Emmerich’s latest film, “Stonewall”, is a drama about the Stonewall Riots in 1969 New York, which sparked the Lgbt civil rights movement. The film stars Jeremy Irvine and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
In addition, to his work in film and television, Emmerich has made considerable contributions to many charities, including but not limited to the Cambodian Children’s Fund and the Los Angeles Lgbt Center. The Q&A will be moderated by journalist Dierk Sindermann.

Calling 20,000 Days on Earth “a documentary about Nick Cave” is both accurate and deeply reductive. Yes, its primary focus is a walk through Cave’s life and career and zeroes in on the creation of his last album, 2013’s Push the Sky Away, but it is so full of stunningly considered ideas and cheeky surrealism that it is unlike any rock doc ever made.
That was the point, according to Cave. “Music documentaries are often very similar to meeting a hero, you know? You love the person’s music but you wish you never met them,” he told EW during a discussion of the film.

One of the most unlikely collaborations in pop history came in 1995, when Kylie Minogue appeared on Nick Cave's Murder Ballad 'Where The Wild Roses Grow'.
The pair remained friends and have reunited, Minogue appearing in Cave's upcoming film 20,000 Days on Earth.
"Kylie, we just on the off chance, we got her to sing this song. It became this kind of minor hit in its day," Cave said.
"She came in this beam of light into our lives for a short time.
"It was a beautiful thing to be sitting with her in this way driving around in this car. it was great."

"I wake, I write, I eat, I write, I watch TV..." so says rock icon Nick Cave in his opening narration voiceover. And in doing so lays out the template of this exceptional documentary. Of course, if you know the artist Cave, you will know that his life isn't quite that simple. And while the film plays like a day in the life of Nick, from the opening scene of him waking up in bed next to his wife Susie to final crescendo of an evening performance of an absolutely riveting live version of "Higgs Boson Blues" from his last album, it is everything in between that really explores and exposes the artist as a work in progress.

That's the message in the brief teaser for the fifth and final season of HBO's "Boardwalk Empire," which is very concerning for Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi).
There isn't much footage in the video, which is set to an ominous cover of Harry Nilsson's "One" by Alva Noto & Blixa Bargeld). We see flashes of Nucky on the boardwalk and in a boardroom, and get glimpses at Lucky Luciano, Al Capone, Nelson Van Alden, and Chalky White.
Speaking of Chalky -- his portrayer, Michael K. Williams, recently revealed that "Boardwalk Empire" will have a major time jump.
"The storyline has jumped seven years [into the future], which is why I have the beard now," Williams told Den of Geek. "The Depression has set in. The days of the shiny shoes and fancy suits are long gone."

All empires must crumble. The fifth and final season of HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" is only a couple months out, and the network is stoking anticipation with a new teaser that hits us with lots of ominous phrases ("No one goes quietly," anyone?) and shots of Steve Buscemi's Nucky Thompson looking very, very concerned. Playing over it all is a cover of Harry Nilsson's "One" by Alva Noto and Blixa Bargeld, to really sell the doom and gloom. As noted by star Michael K. Williams recently, "Boardwalk Empire" Season 5 will be set seven years after the events depicted in Season 4, putting the show smack-dab in the middle of the Great Depression. He was born Nikolaus Günther Karl Nakszynski in Zoppot, near Danzig, on October 18, 1926. In 1930, his family moved to Berlin. Drafted in 1944, he was taken prisoner by the British and transported to Camp 186 near Colchester, where he'd take on his first theatrical roles. By 1946, he was performing in the Schlosspark-Theater in Berlin and, in 1947, he scored his first film role as a Dutch prisoner in Eugen York's Morituri.
In 1960, he took his one-man show on the road: Kinski spricht Villon, Rimbaud, Wilde, Majakowskij und Schiller. The Cologne label Kompakt became an institution by formalizing everything about German techno to the hilt, from minimalism in sound and presentation to its pair of annual series dedicated to the label’s dance tracks (Total) and after-hours wooze. Born out of the Berlin performance-art scene in the early 1980s, Einstürzende Neubauten (along with Throbbing Gristle) staked out the most confrontational, challenging territory of the then-new industrial genre. The group’s deliberately cacophonic approach reverberated in more dance-floor-ready groups like Ministry and Front 242, as well as art-punks like Wire, but Neubauten pushed sonic deconstruction to the limits of tolerance. As the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall approaches on November 9th, many events are planned to mark the occasion and assess the changes Germany has undergone since reunification. In such moments, artistic considerations often take a back seat, but the Goethe Institut [1] in London, whose remit is to promote German culture, is presenting a film series at several locations across the city, looking at underground cinema in East Germany and West Berlin, a first for the UK. Of the two, West Berlin's thriving Super 8 scene of the 1980s is much better known outside of Germany, spawning collections such as Berlin Super 80 [2]. "Dandy'' is a poseur, a dim and grungy piece of experimental exhibitionism from Germany. Technically amateurish and philosophically blowsy, "Dandy'' kicks off the venerable Vagabond Theatre's new direction.
The Wilshire Boulevard revival house will now screen art-house fare, hopefully better than this filmic flotsam.
A shrill barrage of non-linear images and abstract acts punctuated by the musical-dance morass of Nick Cave, Nina Hagen, Yoshito Ohno, among equally untalented others, "Dandy'' is bargain-basement underground filmmaking -- low on ideas, style and backbone.
Kindergarten counterculture, "Dandy'' is an unimaginative, monotonic grind revved up only intermittently by its sophomoric shock shots and its wide-ranging geographical images.
Times Square, Marrakech, Cairo, Himalaya, Tokyo are among the disparate settings for this dark hodgepodge of philosophical mumblings and guitar strummings. While it has minor appeal as a travelogue, this techno-jumbo struts as bigger stuff, repeatedly pontificating about the nature of death.
Example: A female punker is asked the burning question, "What would you do if you had only 10 days left to live?'' She replies, "I'd like to be stoned.''
The camera then lingers over a stone desert, blearily focusing on a running coyote. Such is the thematic and visual level of this punk gunk.
Peter Sempel's directorial style, and we use the term loosely, is characterized only by its grim, in-your-face tonality. The sloppy transitions, the underlit images, the off-kilter framings are not so much a marriage of style with substance but seem rather a cop-out to have neither.
