The Toronto Intl. Film Festival’s Docs program gets underway Sept. 8 and will feature 22 nonfiction films — a hefty 57 increase from last year’s lineup, which was cut back to 14 due to Covid.
Notable titles include Oscar winner Laura Poitras’ “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” which is pictured above and making its Canadian premiere following a world premiere at the Venice Film Festival; “Blackfish” director Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s latest docu “The Grab” and veteran filmmaker’s Werner Herzog’s “Theatre of Thought.”
Sacha Jenkins’s “Armstrong’s Black & Blues” will serve as TIFF Docs’ opening film.
Thom Powers, lead TIFF documentary programmer, winnowed the list of 22 from 700 submissions. While constructing this year’s program, Powers noticed various themes emerge across submissions, one being being the act of resistance.

Bebel Gilberto prances around her hotel room in the charming new video for “Deixa.” The track appears on her upcoming album Agora, out August 21st via Pias Recordings.
Directed by Erik Sohlström, the clip features Gilberto at the Nomad Hotel in Los Angeles, applying makeup and eating decadent pastries while dressed in a striking pink sequined suit. The word “Deixa” translates to “leave” in Portuguese, but Gilberto takes her time in the video, basking in the sun and drinking champagne by the pool.

Brazilian singer-songwriter Bebel Gilberto unveiled a mesmerizing new song, “Deixa,” that will appear on her first album in six years, Agora, out May 1st via Pias Recordings.
“Deixa” — which translates to “leave” in Portuguese — boasts a steady groove that anchors a dream-like drone of horns and periodic flourishes of chimes, bells and strings. Gilberto’s voice easily drifts over the production, but there’s often a sharp kick to her phrasing to counterbalance the engrossing instrumentals.

In the last one year, after "Zambezia" and "Free Birds", we once again have animated talking birds in "Rio 2". But unlike the previous two films, this one is a musical which meanders at its own pace with avian antics and foot-tapping music.
A sequel to its 2011 released franchise, with macaws, a cockatoo, a poisonous frog, a toucan, a pit-bull and more from the Amazon, "Rio 2" takes off from where it left in "Rio". This.

Soaring into cinemas in just a few short months, Blue Sky Studios’ Rio 2 promises to be another adventure-filled animated comedy fit for all the family.
The 2011 original took almost half a billion dollars around the world, launching a new franchise for the studio that created Ice Age. And now Jewel, Blu, and co. are back for more.
Kicking off the New Year in style, Fox took to the titular Rio to ring in 2014, and the studio has released this new sizzle reel teasing the celebrations. And if you hold on until the 2-minute mark, you get to see Jemaine Clement’s sulphur-crusted Cockatoo, Nigel, promising to put an end to the fun shortly, along with an adorable appearance from Kristin Chenoweth’s tree frog, Gabi.

We may well still be a good half-year away from the arrival of Rio 2, but Fox have already kicked off their marketing campaign for the adventure comedy / musical sequel, and with good reason.
The original film did even better than expected, netting just shy of half a billion dollars. And with Rio 2 bowing just one week after Captain America: The Winter Soldier, two weeks after Noah, and opening opposite Stretch Armstrong, Fox are no doubt wanting to lay the groundwork for the second film as early as possible.
The first teaser trailer got the ball rolling back in the spring, and now the studio have released a new teaser trailer, via Yahoo Movies, bringing to life Memory from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats.

The Rio soundtrack. It might not have seemed like it at the time, but Sacha Baron Cohen’s actually-quite-funny turn as a megalomaniacal ring-tailed lemur in Madagascar set a new paradigm. I refer not to the tactic of casting talented comedians in supporting roles in family-friendly anthropomorphic animations and letting them run wild, although this practice has become more common since then. I refer to the short sequence in the middle of that film (and the brain-poundingly long closing credits) when Sacha Baron Cohen’s king lemur repeatedly sings the I Like To Move It Move It chorus from Soul II Soul’s early 90s dancefloor classic. Those of you who do not have small children may have heard from those gape-eyed sleep-deprived friends of yours how the maniacal infant overlords of their newly toy-strewn homes took to this like repetitive quacking ducks to particularly annoying water. Strangely Soul II Soul...

After directing or co-directing three wintry “Ice Age” movies and the metallic “Robots,” Carlos Saldanha was ready for a change.
“After a few of the cold and glacier movies, I was ready for something a little more tropical, a little warm,” he says during a promotional presentation earlier this year. “And more than that, it’s a very personal journey of mine. I am from Rio, from Brazil, and I always thought, ‘Why not make a movie with this amazing backdrop of a town?’ It’s such a photogenic city. The contrast is very great — like you have the mountains, you have the ocean, you have the concrete jungle, you have the real jungle. It’s like the music.”

We've been begging and pleading with our girlfriends to let us go to Rio de Janeiro, but something about the bounty of thongs and beaches has always thwarted our travel attempts. C'est la vie.
In lieu of a spontaneous vacation, though, the best we could get is the soundtrack to Blue Sky's "Rio," the upcoming animated film about a rare macaw (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) who travels to South America to find his female counterpart and revitalize his dying species. Man, even the birds think about sex down there.
As you'd expect, the soundtrack leans heavy on the Brazilian theme, melding updated versions of classic songs with new tracks by R&B and pop superstars. Jamie Foxx and will.i.am's "Hot Wings (I Wanna Party)" should – intentionally or not – please any 8-year-old, with Foxx singing "I wanna fly just like a bird" before being reminded, "But you are a bird.

The soundtrack to "Eat Pray Love" already dropped last month, but now there's an official music music video to Eddie Vedder's exclusive contribution "Better Days." There are no shots of the Pearl Jam frontman -- just clips from the movie -- but the quick shots of scenes are pretty well assembled against the music, and totally out of order (so, no spoilers). The soundtrack also features another one of Vedders' contributions, "The Long Road" featuring Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, plus tracks from Marvin Gaye, Joao Gilberto, Josh Rouse, Sly and the Family Stone and the comp's sole female contributor, Bebel Gilberto....

It was all but inevitable that that Elizabeth Gilbert's blockbuster book, Eat, Pray, Love (2010) would eventually make its way to the big screen. Now it's just about upon us. And when it arrives it will do so not as an indie film, but rather a high-end studio feature with an unlikely writer-director at the helm and an A-list leading lady who might be perfect for the role... or completely miscast (if you believe the naysayers out there). That star is, of course, Julia Roberts, and the writer-director is Ryan Murphy, the man behind Glee (TV). Gilbert's tome was a memoir about a woman -- Gilbert herself -- who gives up what seems, outwardly, to be an ideal life in order to pursue one that more genuinely makes her happy. So, she ends her marriage and heads off to travel the world, to soak it all in, and to -- say...

Sundance favorite and World Cinema Grand Jury nominee Four Lions will close the 2010 SXSW Film Festival on Saturday, March 20. The UK film was co-written, directed, and stars Chris Morris.
Other “festival favorites” include Waking Sleeping Beauty, a behind-the-scenes documentary about Disney animation from 1984 to 1994 directed by Beauty and the Beast producer Don Hahn, and Tony, a Slamdance selection and psychological thriller about a serial killer.
Skateland, starring Ashley Green, is also getting another look from festival goers, as well as the raved-about short film from Spike Jonze titled I’m Here. Plus a Doors documentary narrated by Johnny Depp. I’ll be reviewing and covering as many of these films as I can.

Bebel Gilberto slipped into the American imagination with Tanto Tempo in 2000 and has refused to leave. The efforts that followed -- Bebel Gilberto and Momento -- felt like extensions of that North American debut; beautiful in their own right, and never without taste, yet safely embedded within the same paradigm. It's not surprising, given that she is the musical and genetic progeny of two great Brazilian singers. I wouldn't say that All In One, her Verve debut, points in a completely new direction, but it certainly surprises. Her music has always reached for the romantic in her listeners, a nuance continual in the global understanding of Brazilian sounds. This is quite a paradox considering the social and economic strife inherent in many of the country's urban areas. From the Brazilian musicians I've talked to over the years, it seems that...

There are three instances when I listen to music -- working out, while I cook (some light Bebel Gilberto tunes), and when I go out to dance. Yes, I know we have a lot of serious music listeners here at EW, but I, for one, am proud to say that my cup of tea is the top 40, trash-tastic mainstream hits, the ones that everyone hoots and hollers for when played at dive bars with a grungy dancefloors. "Material Girl"? I'm there. Britney's "Gimme More"? Yes please. So as if to answer my call for such party-appropriate playlists, my friend shared with me fratmusic.
