Leading English composer of symphonies, ballets and choral works, trained under Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst. Began as a writer of avant garde pieces but became more conservative with his compositions during the 1940's. He was made Master of the Queen's Musick in 1953 after having been knighted three years earlier. Occasionally wrote for films.
