The gag about Bullseye is always the speedboat. How many contestants in the ITV darts-based game show that originally ran from 1981 – 1995, had room in their life or garage for occasional Star Prize, the speedboat? (Bullseye presenter Jim Bowen’s 2012 joke to The Mirror that “the only contestants who ever won them lived in top floor flats in Coventry” was taken literally by The Coventry Telegraph who in 2021 launched a local winners search that is presumably ongoing.)
The Bullseye speedboat was its prize anomaly, a symbol of glamour and excitement in a sea of hostess trolleys, sheepskin coats and stainless steel cutlery. After the winning team of two had built their cash fund by answering trivia questions from dart-selected categories, they faced Bully’s Prize Board. There, they threw nine darts in an attempt to win eight prizes plus the bullseye special. Having done that, they had the option to gamble...

Applecart is an upcoming indie horror film. From first time director Brad Brauh, this feature is slated for a Fantastic Fest appearance, in Austin. Fantastic Fest begins this September. In Applecart, a mysterious woman turns up at a family retreat and acts out against everyone. The film stars: Barbara Crampton (Beyond the Gates, 2016), A.J. Bowen (You're Next, 2011), Brea Grant, Alison Haislip and many more. There is currently no wide distribution in the works. Though, a trailer was released earlier this year (found below) and a movie poster can be found here. For more on the story, James (Bowen) is suffering from inoperable liver cancer. He takes refuge in a lone cabin, with some friends. During the night, a woman comes out of the woods. She is shaken. But, as time goes by, it becomes clear that this mysterious person has fatalistic intentions. The film will have its World Premiere at Fantastic Fest.

In April 2002, Daphne Fowler and Chris Hughes formed part of a quizzing supergroup assembled by The Guardian. For a bit of fun, the newspaper set some of the country’s top trivia buffs loose on the greater London pub quiz circuit to see what havoc they could wreak.
The “dream team” cut a swathe from Clerkenwell to Hampstead, only coming unstuck on a foray to the King’s Head in Rochester where they lost the win by a single point. Fans of Timecrimes and Primer might enjoy Synchronicity, the newest film from writer/director Jacob Gentry. I haven't seen any of his previous movies (I hear The Signal was well-liked), but this low-budget indie is a solid piece of science fiction that handles the concept of time travel with the kind of precision geeks will appreciate.
In the not-too-distant future, physicist Jim Beale (Chad McKnight) leads a three-person team in an attempt to create time travel. Their experiments rely on a powerful substance called Mrd that is only manufactured by a single company, run by a shady businessman (Michael Ironside) whose mysterious female companion (Brianne Davis) proves integral to Jim's future. When Jim is essentially blackmailed into giving up the rights to his time machine in exchange for the material necessary to complete his experiment, he ends up desperately sending himself back in time to try to figure a way out of his situation.

The Frontier is a blast from the past as far as suspenseful thrillers go, but it’s not an entirely invigorating one. Hitting on a minimalist 70s vibe that’s from a different technological era, filmmaker Oren Shai brushes off a heist story that never really comes together, as we find ourselves stuck in a rickety motel full of overly-suspicious characters. The style wouldn’t be as much of a problem if it were explored with more depth, really digging into the criminal caper on hand, but as it stands, The Frontier feels like a weird stage-play that’s far too separated by vastly different acts. It’s an unfortunate bore, and one that doesn’t beg to hold our attention, which is one of the worst fates a film can suffer.

Creating movie zombies is dirty, and possibly vomit-inducing, work. That’s the main takeaway from the exclusive slightly Nsfw clip you can see below, which details how the folks responsible for the terrific microbudget horror film, The Battery, made their undead.
Written and directed by first-time filmmaker Jeremy Gardner, The Battery stars Gardner and Adam Cronheim as a pair of bickering baseball players attempting to survive a zombie apocalypse in a leafy but inevitably blood-drenched New England. Look, I’m not one to brag, but I’ve hugged A.J. Bowen. Of course tens of thousands of people could make the same claim, but how many of them managed this feat shortly after giving his latest film a C+ review grade at last year’s Fantastic Fest? Any fear I had falling into his arms melted away when I realized he bore no ill will my way and instead was a funny, smart and personable guy. It probably helped that he knew my opinion carries little to no weight, but still. I guess what I’m saying is I’m now one degree away from hugging Amy Seimetz, and that’s not too shabby. Anyway, The Sacrament. Writer/director Ti West has made three feature films now, and while his love of genre and intentionally methodical pacing has remained steady across all three he’s made a noticeable shift with his newest one away...

Tom Holland's Twisted Tales was a web series hosted by our friends over at FearNet. The 'Twisted Tales' are nine short films, all written and directed by Tom Holland (Child's Play and Fright Night). They are stories about revenge seeking technology, tales of morality, drug abuse and werewolves, survival instincts, and dancing vampires. As with nearly every anthology series out there, there are high notes and low notes. Mileage always varies and enjoyment of the shorts is purely subjective. Holland recruits a few familiar faces to genre fans. In these tales you will find A.J. Bowen (The Sacrament), who gets victimized by his Gps in Fred and his Gps. Danielle Harris (Stakeland) and William Forsythe (Boardwalk Empire) go tete-a-tete in the deal with the Devil tale To Hell With You. Ray Wise...

When it comes to scary, it’s not the monsters or ghosts that do it for me. The most terrifying thing is an individual who can convince an entire group of people to follow one belief. Even more terrifying than the leader are the people within the group, whose views are so extreme that they are willing to do whatever it takes to fulfill a prophecy. Recently, cults have made their way back onto our screens with the hit HBO series True Detective and the upcoming Ti West horror feature The Sacrament. In honor of my cult fascination, I take a look at some of the creepiest cults in the horror genre, and learn that evil always prevails. To the Devil…a Daughter (1976) When a father is trying to save his daughter from Satanists, naturally he would seek help from a writer who specializes in the occult. Author John Verney...

In The Vault this week, we welcome director Dave Parker (The Hills Run Red, ColdWater) and journalist Rebekah McKendry from Fangoria. These are two of the biggest horror nerds I know (and I know a lot of horror nerds) so they give some great insight on this week's film, Dead & Buried.
Dead & Buried is a kind of low-key zombie flick. I had never even heard of it until we started working on The Vault. The small New England coastal town of Potter's Bluff is a popular vacation spot, but visitors frequently end up, well, murdered. But thanks to some voodoo witchcraft, the dead rise again, as residents who don't eat brains and, frankly, act as if nothing happened - except, of course, when it is time to kill the newbies.
Directed by Gary Sherman (Poltergeist III, Raw Meat), the screenplay comes from Dan O'Bannon, best known for writing the original Alien.

On this week's The Vault, we have a classic from the godfather of Italian horror: Dario Argento's Deep Red. Deep Red (or Profondo Rosso in Italy) is probably best remembered for that creepy doll and the classic score by Goblin. Joining us for Deep Red are special effects artist Greg McDougall (The Purge) and actor/comedian Josh Thompson (The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson). While Josh may not be known as a "horror guy," he is a horror fan - and he does a killer Morgan Freeman impression that you must see to believe. (I swear, we didn't doctor it at all!)
Deep Red follows a pianist who witnesses the brutal murder of a famous psychic. He becomes embroiled in the case, but the deeper he gets, the more the bodies pile up. Deep Red marks the first collaboration of many between Argento and the band Goblin, led by frontman Claudio Simonetti.

Despite a remarkable volume of cliched, unmemorable or otherwise awful offerings, 2013 was actually a fairly solid year for horror – especially if your tastes veer off the beaten path. While most mainstream fare ranged from passable (Evil Dead) to abominable (Texas Chainsaw 3D), alternative fare flourished, not merely offering some great, unique entertainment but introducing or establishing talent that promises to become the genre’s next great generation of creators.
While few of the films included on the list ultimately made my overall Top Ten list for the year – good as they were, competition from other films was enviably steep in 2013 – those I chose stood out or distinguished themselves, in full or in part, for offering something original, interesting, or even just particularly effective. Meanwhile, a handful of other experiences or multi-media releases enhanced my appreciation for horror in the last 12 months, which if nothing else will give fans something to...

Ever wondered what might happen if classic video game characters like Mario, Megaman and Link suddenly found themselves out of work? Series creators Jackson Stewart and William Rot explore that scenario in the hilarious short film The Cartridge Family: Battle for Employment, which premiered on the gaming site Screw Attack. The short, which you can watch in its entirety below, is the pilot for a planned sitcom about the lives of 8-bit video game characters who are magically released into the real world by an unwitting gamer. The cast includes many familiar genre names – including Almost Human co-stars Graham Skipper and Brian Gillespie as “Sergio” and “Twink,” with Curtiss Frisle (Acme Saturday Night) as “Roboman” and A.J. Bowen (You're Next) as the exasperated gamer who tries to acclimate his new pals to the real world... with hilariously violent results. There's even a Re-Animator connection: Barbara Crampton, star of the classic film,...

If horror has become a springboard for filmmakers to move on to projects beyond the boundaries of the genre, Ti West catapults himself to the next level with The Sacrament. A chilling psychological study disguised as another of the director’s deliberately-paced thrillers, West finds a found-footage conceit that actually makes sense, and then populates it with characters who make real journeys and genuinely earn audience sympathies.
Although the film will entertain criticisms of exploiting real-life tragedies, The Sacrament is less a recreation of actual events than an examination of a wholly terrifying, alien mindset that proves West’s bona fides as one of the most ambitious and talented filmmakers working today.
A.J. Bowen (You’re Next) plays Sam, a somewhat predictably self-aggrandizing journalist for Vice who embarks on a trip to a remote community called Eden Parish. With photographer Patrick (Kentucker Audley) and cameraman Jake (Joe Swanberg), they...

With Tom Holland’s latest series now available on FEARnet and VOD entitled “Twisted Tales” and his group of short stories exclusively for the Kindle, “Untold Tales”, Holland is entering into a new creative stage in his long and varied career as an actor, writer, director, and producer.
The legendary creator of Fright Night, Child’s Play, Cloak & Dagger, and Psycho II (just to name a few), Holland recently reached out to Dread Central to discuss his thoughts on the new incarnation of Fright Night 2: New Blood (review) from director Eduardo Rodriguez, the new FEARnet series, and his upcoming projects including his desire to remake his 1982 screenplay The Beast Within. There’s also a great update about adapting Stephen King’s “The Ten O’Clock People” showing how both writers are working together to make the story fit more into the modern world.

I can't possibly imagine how I would have managed this year's Fantastic Fest anywhere other than at the new Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline. Balancing the demands of a new day job and my first film project along with the festival has been a daunting task, but the ten-minute commute and ease of parking helps. Attending Fantastic Fest has always been an immersive experience for me as I soak up content and engage in social interactions with incredibly talented filmmakers, actors, fans and film critics -- such as Badass Digest's Devin Faraci (who's in Jodorowsky's Dune) and actor A.J. Bowen (The Sacrament) seen above -- from around the world.
I am also extremely fortunate that despite having lost my Superfan status of several years when the lottery was implemented, I've still had great experiences at Fantastic Fest. The only disadvantage is not being able to get into the high demand and...

It was a dud weekend at Australian cinemas as distributors launched a bunch of films which failed to connect with audiences, mainstream or art house.
The casualties included an action comedy, a biopic, two thrillers and a horror movie, despite the presence of such stars as Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren, Ashton Kutcher, Geoffrey Rush and Nicole Kidman.
The best of the newbies was Red 2, the sequel to the 2010 caper about a group of retired CIA spies, which debuted in top spot with $1.45 million. That.s a mediocre figure considering the cast led by Willis, Mirren, John Malkovich, Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Pro rata, the Australian opening is below the $US18 million debut in the Us, where the film has racked up $52 million.
Now You See Me held stoutly in its fourth outing, taking $1.3 million, down 31%, bringing its tally to $12.7 million.

The Dwight Tilley Band's 1977 single "Looking For The Magic" played on repeat in my mind after last Monday's preview screening at Alamo Drafthouse Slaughter of the horror flick You're Next, which first screened locally at Fantastic Fest 2011. It was life imitating art because the song played repeatedly throughout the movie. I even felt kind of bad that I was jammin' out to the song in my head while characters were being slaughtered left and right on screen.
I had to work to shake myself out of the power-pop stupor when two of the film's leads, Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator) and A.J. Bowen (A Horrible Way to Die and Austinite Emily Hagins' Grow Up, Tony Phillips) appeared on stage after the movie to discuss experiences on set and their feelings about each other, whiskey (thanks A.J. for sharing) and the film's Aug. 23 theatrical release. Filmmaking functions heavily in accordance with associations. When things go well on projects certain cliques form. For example, in comedy there is the Apatow gang, featuring writer-director Judd Apatow and such actors as Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd just to name a few. In the American independent horror film genre, there is the group comprised of writer-director Adam Wingard, writer-director-actor Joe Swanberg, actors A.J. Famed for his inspired nonsense, Ross Noble is now switching to 'real things'. The comic tells Brian Logan why
I've no sooner turned on my tape recorder than Geordie comic Ross Noble unleashes a routine about Jimmy Savile. "Funnily enough," it begins, "I told a joke about him at an awards ceremony years ago ..." On the story goes – it features necrophilia and an appearance by Paul Gambaccini – while Noble's publicist shifts uneasily in her seat. But what else should we expect? Noble's current tour marks 21 years in standup for the 36-year-old, during which he has rarely stuck to the script.
Noble is comedy's great free-associator. Give him a line and he'll show you a tangent. Give him a stage and he'll digress for hours. Yes, there are strands of scripted material – but they're launchpads for his loopy flights of fancy involving snooker-playing pirates, ballerinas blasted by giant fans, and Gerry Rafferty...

The show originally ran between 1981 and 1995 and was presented by Jim Bowen, who will not host the theatre tour. Instead, stand-up comedian Neil Wheatley will take over as host. Audiences will reportedly compete for a £500 cash prize and items ranging from trouser presses to teasmades. (more)...

As Sam Raimi is about to embark on the most decidedly commercial minded film of his whole three decade career with his Tim Burton/Alice in Wonderland-esque Wizard of Oz re-imagining The Great and Powerful Oz, the sad truth is that there’s very little for us die-hard fans of the director to get excited about right now.
Does anyone really want to see a film that ruins the mystery of the great man behind the Oz curtain by revealing all his secrets in this origin flick? No. The power is in the not knowing, and by re-touching & trying to improve upon a film that is so ingrained into the pop culture psyche of every man, woman and child in the Western world and beyond, well it’s a fruitless & completely pointless task, creatively speaking anyway.
Never in his career has Raimi been a sell out director but after years of fighting studio battles,...
