At this point, I think it's safe to say that "Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero" are two completely distinct franchises. "Rock Band," which continues to push players to create their own experience with custom characters and additional expert modes as well as a new keyboard controller, simulates the experience of being in a rock band. "Guitar Hero" is now all about rock, punk, and heavy metal -- playing finger-melting solos devised by maestros of impossible solos -- while taking pre-made characters on an epic journey through rock-dom. Oh yea, it's also a game.
Brian Bright, Project Director on "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" wants to make sure that people realize that. "It's important that people understand we are not a music simulator. We are a music rhythm game." He stresses that last word quite clearly, and if "Warriors of Rock" is any indication of that, I'd say he's right on the money.

"Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock," the Neversoft game that's got outed on Amazon.com this week, will be ported to the Wii courtesy of Vicarious Visions. The Gene Simmons-narrated adventure game will be keeping Nintendo DS collaboration around for three different "Roadie" modes, but the the enriched story that the franchise will be introducing sounds like someone behind the scenes was inspired by "Brutal Legend."
"You've seen the albums with rivers of chrome and guys on horses with bat wings and stuff — king drawing inspiration from that over-the-top rock-'n'-roll fantasy," Neversoft project lead Brian Bright told Nintendo Power.
The plot sounds like something from the mind of the late Ronnie James Dio and includes many of the same story elements and themes that Tim Schafer poured into his Jack Black vehicle last year.

The other day I asked for a response from Activision regarding all the "Rock Band Network" news that has been coming out lately. The response I got back from Brian Bright, Project Director for "Guitar Hero 5," seemed more like a laundry list of features for "Gh Studio" than an actual response to Harmonix's product.
Apparently the Activision rep that sent it over was actually missing a paragraph from Brian's statement, in which he discusses "Rock Band Network" directly:
"As far as we can tell the 'Rbn' is not included in a 'Rb' product and is not a creative tool set. It appears to be a pathway for independent artists to potentially get their music uploaded to the online store, where it can be sold for a fee. It seems to require expensive software and complicated tools to track music that has already been created through traditional means. Also it appears...

Original Story: The other day I got a look at "Rock Band Network," the new initiative which will allow folks to upload their own songs into "Rock Band." I was curious what Harmonix thought of the song creation tools in "Guitar Hero," but apparently they're of the mind that the two products offer widely different features. Harmonix views Gh Studio as more of a composition tool, since it doesn't allow you to upload music directly, instead forcing you to use in-game assets.
To get a response, I reached out to Activision to see how they view Gh Studio and how it compares to "Rock Band Network." What I got back was a laundry list of features. Like a politician, they don't directly refer to their opponent, instead opting to focus on certain leading aspects.
Anyway, here's what Project Director, Brian Bright, had to say about Gh Studio:

Neversoft has confirmed that Guitar Hero 5 will be the final name for the next entry in the series. Despite speculation that the name will be a placeholder, project director Brian Bright told Digital Spy that it is final and will show the evolution of the series. "It is the name. I think they did that to differentiate, just to let you know this is the big one, it’s the one we’ve put the most amount of development time and resources into, because we’re pushing (more)...
