Saban Films announced today the acquisition of worldwide rights to the upcoming comedy The 4:30 Movie, directed and written by Kevin Smith.
Set in the summer of 1986, The 4:30 Movie is a coming-of-age story about three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local multiplex. But when one of the guys also invites the girl of his dreams (Siena Agudong) to see the latest comedy, each of the teens will learn something serious about life and love before the credits roll.
Set in the mobile phoneless, social media-free era of the ’80s, Smith shot The 4:30 Movie at his Smodcastle Cinemas in New Jersey—the same movie theater he haunted every weekend as a teenager. Two years ago, Smith and his co-owners saved the century-old Atlantic Highlands bijou from demolition, renaming it after his podcast theater.

While the streaming wars continue and the pandemic’s damage still smolders around the world, indie distributors are biting the bullet. And as the American Film Market unfolds in Santa Monica, it seems like it’s harder to bring an indie feature to market than it is to find the financing and resources to produce it.
Distribution strategies have been markedly altered in the past several years, due in part from the impact of streamers and the pandemic, yet a host of indies around the world are demonstrating resilience in the face of the ongoing turbulence through canny partnerships, exploitation of platforms and savvy marketing moves.
But above all, the theatrical experience still dominates their thinking. “More than ever, cinema is where movies are watched, it’s not just ‘content,’” says Tom Quinn of Neon, which has Cannes Palme d’Or winner “Triangle of Sadness” in cinemas now. “There’s...

Hollywood producers and filmmakers think they know what audiences want after a roughly a year of being stuck in their homes, cut off from friends and family while a global pandemic raged.
“People want to escape,” predicts Milan Popelka, chief operating officer of FilmNation, the company behind “Arrival” and “Late Night.” “Stories that are more uplifting and optimistic will be at a premium. There’s more than enough stress in the world, I don’t think people will be interested in watching something that adds to their stress levels.”
That means more comedies, musicals and feel-good stories mixed in with the usual diet of superhero films and sequels, producers say. It also signals that the movie business won’t be too eager to greenlight movies set during the darkest days of the pandemic… at least not for the foreseeable future.
