Edward Burns returns to the old ground with “Millers in Marriage,” a subtle exploration of love, compromise, and human progress that represents a personal return to the intimate storytelling that launched his career. Burns digs back into the nuances of family dynamics, this time via the eyes of three fifty-something siblings navigating the challenging terrain of long-term partnerships, nearly three decades after his breakout film “The Brothers McMullen.”
Set in New York City, the film follows the Miller siblings—Eve, Maggie, and Andy—as they navigate the subtle yet seismic upheavals that may disrupt even the most seemingly stable marriages. Each character symbolizes a distinct aspect of midlife relationship challenges: Eve, a former musician managing an alcoholic spouse; Maggie, a successful novelist navigating her husband’s creative stagnation; and Andy, an artist reconstructing his romantic life after a surprise divorce.

‘Millers in Marriage’ Review: Edward Burns Contends with Age and Art-Making in Mature Mid-Life Drama
In the films and television shows he’s made as a writer-director, Edward Burns has never not made things personal, but retaining the same level of creative control that he had on his breakthrough “The Brothers McMullen” has often required working on modest budgets and with younger casts and crews, naturally making the work itself move farther away from who he is now. In a marketplace starved of thoughtful adult dramas, that makes his return to center stage in “Millers in Marriage” a welcome one, as Burns mines territory he’s familiar with after turning 50.
“All I’m looking for is a stable relationship with a woman my own age,” Burns’ character Andy can be heard telling his new girlfriend Renee (Minnie Driver), putting her at ease when she worries he might want kids. They’re at a summer home that Renee got in a divorce, and by the standards of “Millers in Marriage,...

There is something almost remarkable about how “Millers in Marriage,” a relationship drama written and directed by Edward Burns (who also co-stars), manages to gather a group of some otherwise acclaimed actors, sticks them in rooms to talk through what are inevitably emotionally charged situations that their characters are facing, and comes out with something so empty. This void of a movie has plenty of the right pieces to work with at hand, but continually arranges them in the most blunt, least interesting manner possible. It’s a film that bolds, underlines and then shouts at you what it’s about, though never authentically earns your emotional investment.
Save for the more measured performance of Minnie Driver, none of the other actors emerge unscathed as all get dragged down by overwritten dialogue and painfully unsubtle storytelling.

US buyers have not been in an adventurous mood as the last few markets will attest. However hope springs eternal and acquisitions teams will be on the hunt at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) to bulk up pipelines following the Hollywood strikes of 2023.
How theatrical buyers fare against streamers remains to be seen. Financiers and sales agents, many of whom are avowed fans of the theatrical experience, must recoup.

In Hollywood, where dreams are made and broken with the toss of a coin, sometimes it seems like the deck is stacked against even the most deserving actors. Take Tom Cruise, for example, who has charmed audiences with his megawatt grin and natural charisma. Yet, according to director Oliver Stone, the actor was unfairly denied the chance to clutch an Academy Award in his hands.
Cruise’s role in Born on the Fourth of July truly mirrored his acting chops. And thus, it seemed like he was destined for greatness and the coveted ‘Best Actor’ award at the Oscars. However, as fate would have it, the actor found himself up against a fierce competition that included the likes of Kenneth Branagh, Morgan Freeman, Robin Williams, and Daniel Day-Lewis. The latter ultimately took home the Oscar for his role in My Left Foot.

Steven Spielberg has made some of the greatest films that will forever stand the test of time. The director has made films in every genre and has shown that he is a master at evoking awe and emotion in everything he does. In the 90s, Spielberg made two drastically different films based on World War II, considered among his best works.

Steven Spielberg is responsible for creating some of the most unforgettable films of all time. From Schindler’s List to Jurassic Park, the filmmaker has time and again proven that no one has a mind quite like him. With his 1998 film Saving Private Ryan starring Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg gave the film industry one of the greatest films ever made.
Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan (1998)
However, there was a time when the film was met with a roadblock which could have ended with the cast of Saving Private Ryan walking out on Steven Spielberg. In order to make the film feel as realistic as possible, the filmmaker made the actors go through an extensive boot camp led by a Marine Corps veteran. Exhausted by the ordeals of Captain Dale Dye’s tasks, the cast of Saving Private Ryan almost quit their jobs before lead actor Tom Hanks changed their minds.

For four decades, Sundance has maintained a reputation as one of the most important film festivals in America for independent filmmakers from around the globe. To commemorate its 40th anniversary in 2024 and the enormity (and reciprocity) of that cultural footprint, festival leadership set a series of restoration screenings to highlight many of the most memorable films programmed throughout its history.
“When you look at the way the independent film movement has evolved and changed over the years, from the maturation of an industry and the opportunities that artists have found, to the way that an audience has been built around the work, you see a festival that has evolved alongside it,” says John Nein, senior programmer and director of strategic initiatives.

You Hurt My Feelings. At a Friday-night showing of Nicole Holofcener’s latest film You Hurt My Feelings (2023), I noticed several people who had come with their moms. Holofcener makes great films to watch with your mom, if her definition of a great film is something that will make her laugh but won't treat her like an idiot. Holofcener’s stories are smart, funny and heartwarming, a little bit sad in the right places, sophisticated but palatable. Invariably, a great actress plays the lead—Catherine Keener, for the most part, though Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars both in Enough Said (2013) and You Hurt My Feelings. In the film, Beth (Louis-Dreyfus), a writer, overhears Don (Tobias Menzies) telling her brother-in-law that he doesn't like her latest novel. It hurts her feelings. She dry retches on the sidewalk, sobs to her sister, and swears she will never look at her husband the same way again.

The outfit was paired with black lace opera gloves and lace tights made of the same material as the gloves. Tom Sizemore dies aged 61 after brain aneurysm
Perfect casting is something that happens rarely in the career of any actor – starring or supporting – but it happened for Tom Sizemore in the late 90s, just as he was getting to be known for amoral tough guy roles, but also for drug abuse in his personal life. Steven Spielberg offered him the part of Sgt Mike Horvath in Saving Private Ryan, and told him that he would be given a drug test at the end of every day of principal photography and his scenes would be re-shot with someone else if he failed even one.

As far as war films go, you can't do much better than Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan." The World War II epic blasted into theaters in July of 1998 and quickly found favor in the eyes of critics and moviegoers, who shelled out over 485 million in ticket sales. Starring Tom Hanks, Edward Burns, Matt Damon, and Tom Sizemore, "Saving Private Ryan" went on to win a handful of Academy Awards, including best director for Spielberg, but ultimately lost best picture to "Shakespeare in Love" — which is just one of the controversies surrounding the film.
While "Saving Private Ryan" is relatively tame compared to modern-day entertainment like "Game of Thrones," at the time of its release, Spielberg's picture was considered one of the most violent films ever made. The MPAA even considered slapping the film with an Nc-17 but settled on an R-rating. "Saving Private Ryan" is undoubtedly violent, sometimes to a fault,...

“The Holiday” (2006) falls in the fan-favorite canon of Christmas films every year for its sincerely heartfelt story of love found in the least-expected places. And given that it’s a yearly tradition for many, you might be wondering where to stream “The Holiday” right now.

After writing “The Sopranos” episodes, Matthew Weiner thought he was part of the HBO “family.”
However, the “Mad Men” creator revealed that new executive management at the network following visionary Chris Albrecht’s exit led to him being ignored, per the new book “It’s Not TV: The Spectacular Rise, Revolution, and Future of HBO” by Felix Gillette and John Koblin.
According to the oral history of the network, then-hbo President Carolyn Strauss “snubbed” Weiner and HBO did not even respond to the “Mad Men” pitch, despite “The Sopranos” showrunner David Chase urging “everyone at the network to give it a look.”
Weiner recalled, “It was very disappointing to me, as I pushed the rock up the hill, that they did not notice me. Because I was part of the family.”
Eventually, “Mad Men” landed at cable network AMC, whose goal was to “do an HBO kind of series,” as Weiner said.

"The Wire" co-creator David Simon often compares the show to a modern Greek tragedy, going so far as to reimagine mythic Gods moved into intractable American institutions. Capitalism, drug dealing, policing, politics, education, and the media are all examined in great detail, giving you a full picture of why the characters are helpless, and fundamentally incapable of changing anything beyond, maybe, their personal situations.
The series is set in Baltimore, which occasionally gave it some difficulties due to the bleak urban picture it painted, but as co-creator Ed Burns said, "we could've taken that show into any city." Burns and Simon just had decades of life and experience in Baltimore from which to draw.
"The Wire" began with a narrow focus that gradually expanded to dig into Baltimore's nooks and crannies. The show's first season mostly focuses on the plights of both the Barksdale criminal organization and the Baltimore P.

Russell Crowe is denying a claim that his audition to star in My Best Friend’s Wedding went terribly. In fact, he is denying that the audition ever happened at all.
The 1997 romantic comedy starred Julia Roberts as a woman who realises she is in love with her best friend when he gets engaged to somebody else. While the best friend in question was ultimately played by Dermot Mulroney, Crowe was one of the actors who auditioned for the role.
In an excerpt of the book From Hollywood With Love, published in February, the film’s director Pj Hogan said of Crowe’s audition: “I don’t know what went wrong. It was one of the worst table reads I’ve ever experienced. Russell was seated opposite Julia. He gripped that script, and he stared at that script, and he didn’t look at her once.
“He read every line in a monotone.

When you think of HBO's classic mid-'00s series "The Wire," it's the characters that come to mind first -- people like McNulty (Dominic West), D'Angelo, Kima (Sonja Sohn), or Stringer Bell (Idris Elba). All of them have their place in the show's vast tapestry, but their stories never feel manufactured or inauthentic. Their major failures and small triumphs echo and clash against those of others, comprising the major drama of the show. And Stringer, the ambitious climber at the top of the show's Barksdale criminal empire, had some of the show's most engaging material. Of course, it helped that he was played by a future movie star.
While you can now see him on the big screen fighting monstrous lions in "Beast" or playing a romantic Djinn in a George Miller film, Idris Elba's work in "The Wire" some 20 years earlier was much more low-key. Stringer is nothing like the typical fantasy gangster.

In Hollywood, everything is not what it seems. The camera is only a reflection of the reality filmmakers put in front of it, therefore, specific experiences portrayed beyond the cast and crew's reach can sometimes be quite flawed. While the addictive thrill of a "Criminal Minds" episode starring enigmatic TV character actors may come off as smart, real law enforcement professionals might have other opinions.

When David Simon made it clear that season 5 of "The Wire" would be its last, viewers' expectations exploded through the roof. Though the show was valued primarily for its textured, non-sensationalized portrayal of Baltimore politics, policing, crime and so on, fans couldn't help but get worked up for some kind of big finish. Would the ascendant drug kingpin Marlo Stanfield go down like Stringer Bell before him? Would Detective Jimmy McNulty finally drink himself out of his job? Most importantly, after that heart-rending fourth season, could any of Prez's promising middle-school students break the criminal/addict cycle they were...

Over its five seasons in the early aughts, David Simon's HBO series "The Wire" threw viewers off every now and then. “This festival and Chanel’s support of it couldn’t be more important at this moment in time, particularly for so many artists and so many women filmmakers,” Judith Light told Variety on the red carpet about the event’s in-person New York City return from a two-year pandemic pause.
“Here we are with a level of diversity and inclusivity that is bringing us all back together just like Tribeca did after 9/11,” she continued.

Penélope Cruz shared her own grateful enthusiasm for being at the film festival event on the heels of her U.S. premiere of “Official Competition,” a drama co-starring Antonio Banderas.

Pj Hogan, the director of the 1997 romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding, has reflected on Russell Crowe’s awkward audition for the film.
The movie starred Julia Roberts as a woman who realises she is in love with her best friend when he gets engaged to somebody else. While the best friend in question was ultimately played by Dermot Mulroney, Crowe was one of the actors who auditioned for the role.
In an excerpt from the book From Hollywood With Love, published in Vulture, the filmmaker said his first choice for the part had been Crowe, who he thought was “probably the most amazing actor I had ever encountered”.
To cast Crowe in the film, Hogan explained, he needed Roberts’s approval. He invited Crowe to a table read opposite Roberts and hoped there would be great chemistry between the pair.
“I don’t know what went wrong,” Hogan said.

It’s 1982 and the summer is coming to an end for the town’s residents as well as the tourists that are vacationing there. This certainly doesn’t mean however that new romances aren’t just beginning while old ones fizzle out. Cue ‘Summer Days, Summer Nights’ the recently released romantic dramedy feature directed and written by Edward Burns. "Do you feel that...?" "I do." "So what do you think that is?" MGM Studios has revealed an official trailer for the indie ensemble drama Summer Days, Summer Nights, the latest film made by actor / filmmaker Edward Burns. This originally premiered way back in 2018 but is only now finally getting a release direct-to-vod this year. Best way to get over a broken heart? Fall in love again... It's the summer of 1982 on Long Island. JJ is working for his dad, when he falls for Debbie. Frankie reconnects with a long lost love. But as temperatures cool, so do their relationships, leaving the young men to accept summer is ending. Edward Burns is joined by a breakout cast including Anthony Ramos, Pico Alexander, Zoe Levin, Lindsey Morgan, Jon Rudnitsky, Amadeus Serafini, Caitlin Stasey, and Rita Volk. This looks like a charming throwback look at love in the 80s and summer romance.
