After 34 years – and numerous injuries – the 6ft 10in star finally retired from wrestling yesterday. But will he come back from the dead yet again?
There’s not a day I wake up something doesn’t hurt,” says a matter-of-fact Mark Calaway. “I’ve already got metal in my hips; I’ll walk with a limp for ever; the range of motion of my head is not what it was.” It doesn’t take a doctor to diagnose why. Since first stepping into the wrestling ring 34 years ago, this 55-year-old’s body has taken a staggering amount of abuse. Donning his trademark Stetson, leather coat and perfectly applied black eyeliner, Calaway – known by all as the Undertaker – has spent a career expertly clotheslining and chokeslamming his way to glory. Since his debut WWE (then WWF) appearance back in November 1990, he has become its longest-serving performer; a literal and figurative giant of the wrestling world.

When I look back at my career, I have experienced so much and was able to do so much that I can easily look back and say that I haven't missed anything, be it a match against a wrestler or anything," The Undertaker told Ians in an interview.
"After 30 years of career in wrestling, there's not a whole life that I didn't get to accomplish. I am very proud of my career. It's very humbling to know that you have an effect on people and their everyday lives.

It’s becoming official finally, and WWE fans are likely feeling a certain way about the Undertaker stating that he’s going to fully retire from the WWE, at least from the action part of it. One can imagine that he might make special appearances here and there since many wrestlers that retired in their day have made it a habit to come back now and again to the pleasure of the fans. But this is a monumental day in wrestling history since Mark Calaway has been a part of the WWE universe for so long that it’s hard to think of

The Undertaker will rise once more for a tribute at the upcoming pay-per-view “WWE Survivor Series,” which this November marks 30 years since his WWF debut. Along the way, there have been championships, the WrestleMania “Streak” and a ton of Tombstones.
So yeah, we had some questions for the professional-wrestling legend, whose real name is Mark Calaway, when we spoke early during what WWE has informally dubbed Undertaker Appreciation Month and officially titled “30 Days of the Dead Man.”
Below, read our November Q&a with the (dead) man himself.
TheWrap: What is your current status as an in-ring wrestler? Is it officially retired? Are we going with that?
The Undertaker: I’m going with it, but I work for a man by the name of Vince McMahon, whose motto is ‘Never say never.’ And I’ll kind of leave that there. In my eyes, yeah, I am officially retired.

If there was ever a wrestler with a more protected character than The Undertaker then I’d like to know about them. It’s been a storied and lengthy run, with a debut at Survivor Series back at the end of 1990, until the current day, and for 99% of that time we’ve seen The Undertaker character kept behind the scenes totally, with no real look at Mark Calaway, the man behind the black hat and the trench coat. Sure, we saw The American Bad-Ass back in the early 00s, which saw a more realistic version of ‘Taker on television, but it still wasn’t a reveal. Now, as The Undertaker approaches the end of his in-ring career, we finally see a documentary series from WWE in which access is granted to the cameras and Mark Calaway opens up about his life, his career and his final run as a professional wrestler.

Mark Calaway, a.k.a. WWE’s The Undertaker, knows he “had no business being in the ring” vs. Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 33. In TheWrap’s sneak peek from Sunday’s “Undertaker: The Last Ride” Chapter 2, the Dead Man is training — hard — for his redemption match against John Cena at the following year’s WrestleMania 34.
Working out at Lakeway Crossfit, Calaway welcomes the WWE camera crew to “Hell.”
“I didn’t think this workout was going to be this taxing, cardiovascular-wise,” Calaway said struggling in the sudden 90-degree Texas heat.
“Nobody else feels sorry for me, I’m not going to feel sorry for myself,” he continued. “I shouldn’t have been in the ring last year, simple as that. It won’t happen again, you can bet (on) that.”

Mark Calaway, better known to WWE fans as The Undertaker, is finally pulling back the curtain on his storied career with a revealing new WWE Network docuseries titled “Undertaker: The Last Ride.”
The five-episode series, which began filming in 2017 ahead of WrestleMania 33, is meant to give fans an inside look at Calaway’s life as he prepares for his final outings in the ring.
“It goes without saying that I have far more matches behind me than I do in front of me,” Calaway tells Variety. “I think for the very reason I protected this character for so long is why I felt like this docuseries was the thing to do, because I don’t know how much there is left.”

To be fair, there Has been a documentary on the Undertaker, but given that it came out in 2005, and that a lot of people might not remember it, And the fact that a lot has happened in the last 15 years, it might be time for a more comprehensive look at one of the most dominant entertainers to ever set foot in the squared circle. Mark Calaway, the Taker’s real name, is a guy that stands 6’10” and is as imposing as they come, whether he’s the Undertaker, Big Evil, or the American Badass. For well onto 30 years

Since he entered semi-retirement, the Undertaker’s two or three matches per year don’t require much storyline. The Deadman returns, wrestles his match, and then goes back to his home in Texas until the next Saudi show or WrestleMania comes around. That’s changing with this year’s WrestleMania 36 Undertaker match, though.
Aj Styles cut a bizarre promo on last night’s Raw, outing former WWE women’s wrestler Michelle McCool as Undertaker’s wife. McCool married Undertaker, a.k.a. Mark Calaway, back in 2010. But that hasn’t been acknowledged on WWE television until now.
Historically, Calaway has kept the Undertaker character very close to the vest. There are stories about how he would rarely even interact with fans at an airport when he was the “deadman” character, but was more than willing to interact with fans when he utilized the biker gimmick in the early-2000’s.

I was excited when this episode was announced in the same way I was when I heard about Austin’s episode with The Undertaker. He was, after all, in a similar way to ‘Taker, very protected by WWE as far as hearing real-life stuff from him during his run. John Cena is for whom the bells tolled tonight: The Undertaker returned to WWE on Sunday, just in time for a *surprise* WrestleMania 34 match. (Those asterisks mean we totally knew this was coming.)
The “Blockers” star spent weeks lobbying the Dead Man for a fight at the pro-wrestling promotion’s biggest pay-per-view of the year, though no one had heard from ‘taker ’til tonight. Cena — and the WWE Universe — heard Mark Calaway loud and clear on Sunday evening.

No, it wasn’t quite a WrestleMania classic, but the Mercedes-Benz Superdome fans experienced a spectacle, ‘taker got some redemption, and Cena got enough screen time to remind us all that “Blockers” is out in theaters now.
Win-win-win, we suppose — especially considering Cena got to bury Elias just before his actual opponent rose into the New Orleans arena.

He may not look it, but John Cena is a big softie at heart (just please don’t tell me we said so). It’s this sensitive side he explores in Kay Cannon’s excellent comedy Blockers – and a sensitive side we managed to draw out of him during our interview with the WWE superstar.
Cena tells us how he cries when watching movies, and specifically that it happens on planes. He also speaks about his old friends from school and whether they kept in touch, and what an excellent job Cannon has done on this production, and how helpful it was that she approached the material from a writer’s perspective.
He also talks about his work in the comedy genre, and what we can expect from forthcoming Transformer spin-off Bumblebee. We also ask whether he can sing like The Rock can sing, and on the theme of wrestling rivalries,...

You should remember this guy, the White Walker at Hardhome who raised his arms like the Undertaker after a particularly memorable Wrestlemania victory. It's probably one of the most chilling and impressive visuals that Game Of Thrones has ever featured. And it was one of those rare moments...
