The 27th Sonoma International Film Festival (March 20-24), as always, leaned into wine and food with the sold-out opening night U.S. premiere of Thomas Napper’s “Widow Clicquot” (Vertical Entertainment), starring Haley Bennett as the woman who saves the legendary winemaker’s legacy. The wine country film festival drew its highest audience attendance to date with a robust film slate programmed by artistic director Carl Spence (working with Executive Director Ginny Krieger), in his second year, including upcoming specialty fare like Luc Besson’s “DogMan” (Briarcliff Entertainment) starring Caleb Landry Jones in an incendiary performance, and Sony Pictures Classics’ raucous comedy “Wicked Little Letters,” starring Olivia Colman, along with a smattering of yummy wine and food events.
The five-day festival curated by Spence along with senior programmers Amanda Salazar and Ken Jacobson, showcased more than 100 films. Twenty-five countries were represented in this year’s lineup of 43 narrative features, 16 documentary features,...

The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering 2001 Maniacs was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Robert Englund doing a demented Colonel Sanders impression. Lin Shaye putting on a deadly song and dance routine. Enough politically incorrect elements to offend pretty much everybody. Buckets of gore. Gratuitous nudity. And a cameo appearance by Eli Roth, playing his Cabin Fever character. Put all of this together and you get 2001 Maniacs (watch it Here). The director calls it a “splatstick” movie. Splatter combined with slapstick comedy. We call it The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Herschell Gordon Lewis was a classy guy, but he specialized in making movies that were not classy. His aim was to give the grindhouse and drive-in crowds the things Hollywood wasn’t giving them. Noting...

Tunisia has picked Kaouther Ben Hania’s Four Daughters, which debuted in competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, as its entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2024 Oscars.
Four Daughters was one of two documentaries this year to earn a coveted spot in the main competition at Cannes. The film centers on Olfa Hamrouni and her children – the titular four daughters. The eldest two disappeared from Tunisia as teenagers, with evidence pointing to them being swept up into Isis. To fill in their absence, Ben Hania hired professional actresses to play the missing daughters, creating a unique hybrid of fiction and documentary to explore the family’s lasting trauma.

The 2023 Cannes Film Festival’s documentary slate featured probes into human rights abuses and profiles of unsung visionaries. At least one movie falls into both categories. This year marks the second time that the L’Œil d’or, first presented in 2015, has gone to two films. It’s also the first time in 19 years that nonfiction has competed for the Palme d’Or. Do you think any of the following titles 10 should be on our radar come Oscar season?

A Year At War
Commemorating: A year is a long time in anyone’s calendar but, for the people of Ukraine, the 12 months that have followed that dreadful day on February 24, 2022, must have felt like a lifetime. Commemorative programs dominated the schedules yesterday and today as the global community marks the anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion by highlighting the plight of an embattled nation, and considering what’s to come. In the U.S., our political correspondent Ted Johnson had this handy rundown of all the major coverage from the news networks, which was preceded by Joe Biden’s surprise visit to Ukraine. “I’m here to show our unwavering support for the nation’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity,...

From separating families at the border to promises to build a massive wall between the US and Mexico, the Trump administration took an aggressively hostile approach towards immigrants.
It was these policies that inspired directors Betsy Hershey and Emma Wall to make the documentary Guerrilla Habeas, which focuses on the immigrant families whose lives were torn apart by these laws and the intrepid lawyers and activists who fought to protect them.

Becoming Cousteau director Liz Garbus said her documentary about ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau shows that he recognized the dangers of climate change decades ago. Garbus spoke with Deadline’s Matthew Carey at Contenders Documentary.
“We saw him start talking about it as early as 1971,” Garbus said. “When he started talking about coral reefs, he started talking about species of fish that were no longer populating areas he was diving in. And so he just, through firsthand experience, became concerned about the undersea world.”
Cousteau attended the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro as one of the only non-heads of state invited to speak. By then, he had a lot more to warn polluters about.
“He [was] really granted that global audience to sound the alarm for protecting the oceans, which he saw correctly as entirely linked to the survival of humanity,” Garbus said.
Early in his career, Cousteau helped oil companies map sites for offshore drilling.

Robert Englund and Freddy Krueger. Not since Bela Lugosi and Dracula have a character and an actor been so deeply linked. And I would venture to say that not even Lugosi’s Dracula achieved the level of mainstream popularity achieved by Englund’s Krueger. During the late ’80s, you couldn’t turn on the television, open a magazine, or even look at a damn lunchbox without seeing Freddy’s charred face plastered on it. But that scorched visage would be nothing without Englund’s personality at the core of the character. Englund’s ability to imbue Krueger with such malicious delight struck a note with the public that just can’t be replicated. Jackie Earle Haley is a fantastic actor and did some interesting things in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake, but I never really felt like I was watching Freddy Krueger.

Stars: Mykelti Williamson, Lance Henriksen, Matthew Carey, Sunkrish Bala, Bresha Webb, Val Morrison, Matt Doherty, Eddie Perez, Tanc Sade, Lindsey Smith-Sands | Written and Directed by Craig Efros
Originally known as Hollows Grove, Orphanage: The Haunting at Hollows Grove (that’s one hell of a mouthful) was unceremoniously dumped onto DVD in the UK at the end of October – just in time for Halloween. I say dumped as this is yet another case of an interesting found-footage film (how often do I say that?!) being released with a new supermarket-friendly title and artwork. Artwork, may I add, which makes absolutely no mention that writer/director Craig Efros’s film features cameos from Lance Henriksen and Mykelti Williamson – talk about cutting your nose off to spite your face!
Enough about my supermarket-based complaints and on to the film itself. Orphanage follows a young filmmaker, Harold Maxwell, making a behind-the-scenes documentary on his...

Even the name “Hollows Grove” doesn’t sound like a pleasant place to visit.
In a found footage-style horror film, it follows a group of paranormal activity investigators into a haunted children’s hospital.
Here’s the full synopsis:
A young filmmaker, Harold Maxwell is filming a behind-the-scenes documentary about his friends - the Spirit and Paranormal Investigation Team, (S.P.I.T) and their ghost hunting reality show. Harold joins the S.P.I.T crew as they head out to their next assignment, to film an old, abandoned and supposedly haunted orphanage, Hollows Grove. Soon after arriving at the orphanage the team begins to realize that what they thought would be a routine investigation is turning in to a nightmare from which they can’t escape.
The cast includes Lance Henriksen, Matt Doherty, Sunkrish Bala, Mikelti Williamson, Val Morrison, Matthew Carey and Bresha Webb. It is the feature...

These reality TV ghost hunters never learn their lessons.
Latino-Review was provided with two exclusive scene clips with mini-featurette interviews with the director and cast members for the upcoming horror comedy film “Hollows Grove.”
The movie mocks those reality TV shows played on multiple cable TV networks.
