Carlstrom was born in Stockholm, Sweden. He started his career answering phones at an advertising agency. He later started writing and went to school for creative writing. Half way through school he founded an ad agency called Graceland Sthlm, at the age of 21. The agency grew to be creatively acclaimed and was specially known for its unorthodox approach and merging of entertainment and advertising. At the agency he also started directing commercials.

After moving to New York in 2000, he did development work for Academy Award-winning producer Edward Saxon and Peter Saraf company Magnet. After leaving Magnet he assistant directed and co-produced a series of smaller pictures.

In 2003 Carlstrom joined Destricted as partner and co-producer. A series of short films directed by leading image-makers including 'Marina Abramovic', 'Matthew Barney', 'Marco Brambilla', 'Larry Clark', Gaspar Noé, 'Richard Prince' and 'Sam Taylor-Wood', Destricted (2006) premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.

He is a co-founder of Tilt, a production company dedicated to capturing theater and other live performances for release on DVD and broadcast. TILT recently did a short film for The New Globe Theater, a new performing arts venue proposed for Governors Island in New York Harbor designed by architect Norman Foster. New Globe's artistic board includes `Al Pacino', `Philip Seymour Hoffman', `Kevin Kline', `Peter Hall', `Harvey Keitel' , `Susan Sarandon', `Estelle Parsons' and others. It is spearheaded by Barbara Romer.

Combining his advertising background with film, he has done several branded entertainment projects. One was for on-line publisher Gawker Media, where Carlstrom licensed the video rights to 'Necromania': A Tale of Weird Love! (1971), a long-lost film made by film auteur `Ed Wood'. The DVDs were sold retail, making it an advertising campaign that made money while bringing over one million additional visitors to the site.

He now heads up Third Factory, a production company based in New York.
