The Oscars are done for another year and Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy are newly minted Oscar winners for Oppenheimer! Overall, it was an expected and welcome result, with Oppenheimer also taking home Best Picture, while Poor Things star Emma Stone won a second Oscar, in a surprising, but well-earned result. Overall, it was the icing on the cake of a refreshingly entertaining edition of the Oscars – one of the best in years.
Right off the bat it was pretty amusing, Jimmy Kimmel made some pretty fun digs in his opening monologue, including some references to Robert Downey Jr’s checkered history (which he was happy to play along to) and Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s genetic perfection (he ain’t wrong). One man is preparing for a “quite unbelievable” Oscars night, having found himself nominated three times this year in the same category.
Special effects supervisor Neil Corbould is up against himself twice over, after being recognised in the category for his work on three movies – Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, The Creator and Napoleon.
Corbould has two previous Oscars to his name – for Gladiator and Gravity. He told the BBC that this year’s close-to-hand competition could be “the kiss of death,” and said:
“I might have three seats and have to play musical chairs!” The best part? “I get invited to three different after parties.”
Corbould has been working in the film industry for nearly five decades, having followed his uncle into special effects. Colin Chilvers previously won an Oscar himself, for his work on the 1978 movie Superman. He also worked on The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), Condorman...

The films in the running for the 2024 Best Visual Effects Oscar are “The Creator,” “Godzilla Minus One,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” and “Napoleon.” Our odds currently indicate that “Godzilla Minus One” (10/3) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “The Creator” (18/5), the new “Guardians” entry (9/2), “Napoleon” (9/2), and the latest “Mission: Impossible” chapter (9/2).
Included among the 17 individuals in this lineup are 13 first-timers who constitute the category’s largest newcomer rate since the minimum annual amount of nominated films was set at five in 2011. This vast majority comprises all four “Godzilla Minus One” team members, dual contender Simone Coco (“Mission: Impossible” and “Napoleon”), three artists from “The Creator”, two from “Guardians of the Galaxy” (Theo Bialek and Alexis Wajsbrot), two more from “Mission: Impossible” (Jeff Sutherland and Alex Wuttke), and one more from “Napoleon” (Luc-Ewen Martin-Fenouillet).

Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” was the big winner at the 22nd Visual Effects Society Awards (held February 21 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). The AI-themed, sci-fi actioner earned five awards, including the top photoreal feature VFX prize. The other awards were for modeling (Nomad), created environment (Floating Village), effects simulations, and compositing & lighting (Bar).
“The Creator” utilized an innovative streamlining process in post, in which Ilm designed and placed the naturalistic VFX over the actors playing AI simulants and the photographic plates as set extensions. This made the $80 million indie look like a $200 million blockbuster, with director Edwards shooting the entire film guerilla-style in 80 locations throughout Southeast Asia as the primary camera operator with a small crew and natural light.
Meanwhile, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the animated feature Oscar favorite (snubbed by the Academy’s VFX branch), took home four awards, including the top animated VFX prize. Sony Pictures Imageworks innovated...

As had been generally expected, Gareth Edwards’ futuristic sci-fi film “The Creator” proved to be the favorite among visual effects practitioners. The film topped the feature competition at the 22nd Visual Effects Society Awards, claiming five wins including one in the leading category for outstanding VFX in a photoreal feature.
Wednesday night at the Beverly Hilton, it also won the categories for created environment, model, compositing and lighting and effects simulations. Also, in the feature competition, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” collected two awards for the digital character (the emotive Rocket) and virtual cinematography. “Oppenheimer” grabbed the trophy for practical effects, and “Nyad” took home the award for supporting VFX. Sony Pictures Animation’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” was the big winner among the animated features, collecting four awards.

Visual effects teams served up astonishing images of animated characters, monsters, and the ex-
plosions that we’ve all come to expect and love over the last year. And this time, as the Visual Effects Society’s nominations for its annual awards show, VFX artists are leaning more and more into the kinds of tools and techniques that speed up production, give filmmakers real time choices, and create stylized versions of effects.
Chris Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which was lauded for its astonishing and convincing VFX, relied on teams using cutting edge tools to immerse audiences in the story. The film also leaned into some classic special effects designed to be paired with VFX to make an overall more impressive image.
“Chris wants to do as much in camera as he can because he knows this will make everything look better,” says Scott Fisher, special effects supervisor, nommed for his work on the film.

Best Visual Effects is one of my personal favorite Oscar categories, but this year it’s one without a single Best Picture nominee in the bunch, which isn’t that uncommon — it happened most recently in 2020. Not that it necessarily matters, since not a single movie that has won Best Picture has also won this category going all the way back to Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2003. In fact, that was the last Best Picture winner to even be nominated in this category.
Two of the movies nominated this year received no other nominations, while the others only received one or two additional below-the-line bids. What’s interesting is that there is only one visual effects nominee that is also nominated for its production design: Ridley Scott‘s “Napoleon,” which only received three below-the-line nominations total. In most years that would...

Director James Gunn brought a new level of emotional power to “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” by making the wisecracking Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and his tragic backstory the centerpiece of the finale. This required the Oscar-nominated VFX (led by Marvel’s production VFX supervisor Stéphane Ceretti) to up its game considerably to meet the demands of Gunn’s intimate scale and epic scope.
Framestore (led by VFX supervisor Alexis Wajsbrot) was tasked with expanding and improving its keyframe animation of Rocket through six stages, from genetically altered baby raccoon to hardened weapons expert. This allowed for greater nuance and complexity in the facial performance along with more detailed fur and an evolved gait and physiology. “It’s really a chain of artists that work together and get that to the level where other humans looking at it are crying because of a CG raccoon,” Ceretti told IndieWire in the video below.

This weekend the visual effects branch presented its annual bakeoff, a pre-nomination-voting event featuring its category’s 10 shortlisted movies. Branch members got a look at an impressive and diverse range of work from big-budget tentpoles such as Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, to the $15 million Godzilla Minus One from Japan’s Toho, to a rare animated feature, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Speaking with the help of a translator, the Godzilla Minus One team of potential nominees offered a charming look at their work, which involved innovation—from character work to water—to complete the film’s 610 VFX shots with the constraints of a shoestring budget and just 35 artists. That unique situation also meant that Godzilla was one of several movies whose four potential nominees for creative contributions—in this case, including the film’s director Takashi Yamazaki and a compositor, Tatsuji Nojima—were not the more typical...

It’s fitting that James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” wraps up with Rocket’s origin story in the largest spaceship in MCU history: The Bowie, which debuted in “The Holiday Special.” According to the backstory, the massive, four-story craft was built by power tool expert Rocket (Bradley Cooper). “We always thought of it as the muscle car of spaceships,” production designer Beth Mickle told IndieWire.
In honor of Rocket, the Bowie ended up in the shape of a giant circular saw after initial sketches involved various power tool designs. The art department then built the Bowie’s interior as a series of interconnected sets (three stories high) with seven different areas on a 20,000-square-foot stage at Trilith Studios in Atlanta.
“We wanted the physical spaces to all be connected by these circular shapes, which we hadn’t seen much of before,” Mickle said. “And we staged...

As Marvel’s Guardians Of the Galaxy Vol. 3 opens in theaters, visual effects supervisor Stephane Ceretti remembers the “very emotional” final day of shooting with the cast, crew and director James Gunn. “We were all finishing the last few scenes and saying goodbye to everybody. We were all crying like babies on the last day,” he says in a new episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s Behind the Screen podcast. “We had so much fun shooting it, and we had so much fun and so much sadness at the end.”
It was late in postproduction that Gunn was named co-chair and co-ceo of DC Films, but Ceretti said the director never missed a beat on Guardians. “That’s his baby. Maria Bakalova may be relatively new to the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise, but you can't say she's not committed to her role. The actress best known for her performances in movies like "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" and "Bodies Bodies Bodies" made her Marvel debut in "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" last year, playing the friendly space dog Cosmo. Though Cosmo isn't exactly the star of the Guardians team, she pretty much immediately became a fan favorite, thanks in part to Bakalova's chipper voice coming from the Russian Golden Retriever. Bakalova lent more than her voice to the role, though; she also gave a motion capture performance that she says allowed her to get in touch with her imagination.

Marvel’s “Eternals” feels completely different from every other Marvel Studios release, and much of that has to do with writer-director Chloé Zhao’s unique approach to the material – largely skipping green screen sets in favor of natural locations, favoring outdoor lighting, and a generally more philosophical approach to the material and characters that is mostly missing from other Marvel Studios productions. Watch any five minutes of the movie, and you can tell how unique it is – both in the Marvel Studios ecosystem and in big budget filmmaking in general.
And this approach can be felt in the visual effects as well, which somehow have an earthier texture too. TheWrap recently spoke with Stephane Ceretti, the VFX Supervisor on “Eternals,” and Matt Aitken, Weta Digital VFX Supervisor (he previously oversaw the end battle on a little movie called “Avengers: Endgame”), about how Zhao’s approach shaped the visual effects, what...

Last year, Chloe Zhao made the leap from independent films to Marvel with “Eternals,” which is now streaming on Disney Plus.
For Zhao to bring the story to life, one person who was important to her journey was visual effects supervisor Stephane Ceretti. Before Zhao had even shot the Oscar-winning “Nomadland,” Zhao had met Ceretti.
For “The Eternals,” she continued shooting on practical locations, working in natural light and utilizing the magic hour instead of being in a studio working against green and blue screen. Zhao explains, “Planet Earth is such a big part of the emotional arc of the story that we wanted to go out there and capture it.”
Having seen “The Rider,” Ceretti understood the director’s love for nature and light. “It felt a shame to not to push into this. When you’re on a set, you’re limited with space and it becomes restrictive.

Marvel knew exactly what it was getting with director Chloé Zhao, whose naturalistic aesthetic for “Eternals” was demonstrated in her Oscar-winning “Nomadland.” Crucially, this had a significant impact on the VFX: Zhao eschewed green and blue screens for shooting on location in the Canary Islands and England, where the natural light (particularly Magic Hour) and her anthropological visual style had a direct bearing on full CG shots.
Additionally, the epic world building, the cosmic energy of the superhero Eternals, and the CG character design of the antagonistic Deviants and Celestials were influenced by manga, anime, and Marvel comics. But Zhao ultimately tied them all to the metaphysical theme of nature as the ultimate superpower.
“We went on location more than we normally do for a Marvel movie, and Chloé wanted everything to be in natural places,” said Marvel VFX production supervisor Stephane Ceretti. “She also wanted to work with Ben Davis,...

With “Ant-Man and the Wasp” antagonists The Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Marvel continues embracing female empowerment. They are combatants who both try to harness the energy of the Quantum Realm, and director Peyton Reed found their relationship even more intriguing by switching Ghost’s gender, with the visual effects playing up the contrasts between them.
The Wasp is like a bullet the way she switches sizes and fights like a martial artist, and Ghost poses an elusive threat in the way she phases in and out of physical reality and materializes as multiple versions of herself.
“The power set seemed interesting and we were able to reinvent Ghost,” Reed said. “And I liked the idea that there’s a personal link there to Hank Pym’s [Michael Douglas] past, and that these powers that she has are as much an affliction as an asset, It’s something she’s struggling with.

The greatest achievement of “Doctor Strange” (nominated for the VFX Oscar) was adding mysticism to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (McU), which is emphasized in the bonus features of the Blu-ray release.
Not surprisingly, that was the biggest draw for director Scott Derrickson and co-stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Tida Swinton. But how to bring mysticism into the 21st century? Thematically, the director wanted to personalize the arrogant neurosurgeon’s comeuppance by making it a story about overcoming trauma, and visually, he wanted to incorporate the psychedelic look of Steve Ditko’s iconic comic book drawings.
But he couldn’t have done it without the latest VFX sorcery, which we learn more about via special Blu-ray features “A Strange Transformation” and “Across Time and Space.”
Led by production VFX supervisor Stephane Ceretti, the VFX masters not only found inspiration in Ditko’s trippy tropes but also Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning “Inception” effect of bending and folding buildings.

Visual Effects (VFX) artists are spectacular. Their intense discipline for creating seamless digital worlds tricks viewers into believing that what they’re seeing is real. Last night at the 89th Academy Awards, the Oscar for Best Visual Effects went to Robert Legato, Adam Valdez, Andrew R. Jones and Dan Lemmon the VFX team behind “The Jungle Book.”

Funny or Die, always with great wit and swift action, wanted to pay “tribute” to a film that got snubbed for a VFX nomination. This year, Funny or Die recognized Kenneth Lonergan’s Best Original Screenplay– and Best Actor–winning “Manchester By the Sea” for its fantastical visual effects. The team was able to craft the world of Manchester so beautifully, it actually looks as if Casey Affleck is there. If you really think about it, the VFX are so good, it’s like there aren’t any at all.

Update:
Winners are now indicated. I correctly guessed 11 out of the 24 categories, which is slightly better than last year, when I guessed 10 out of 24.
Previous 02.26.17:
I’ve now seen as many of the nominated films as I will be able to before tonight’s ceremony, and here finally are my educated guesses about who will take home each award — projected winners are Xed at the lefthand side. Keep in mind: those Xes don’t represent whom I think should win Oscars but whom I think will win, based on what little I can grasp about how the Academy thinks. I’ve also noted which nominees I think should win. Kindly note that this is not necessarily my take on who did the best performance/writing/FX/whatever of the year, but whom I think is best among the nominees.
I have not noted a “should win” for the feature documentary category,...

Sunday’s 89th Academy Awards are underway at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney took to the stage at the Dolby Theatre in a popular adapted screenplay win for Moonlight as the drama earned its second win of the night.
Moments earlier Kenneth Lonergan accepted the original screenplay award for Manchester By The Sea in the film’s first prize. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon – winners of this award for Good Will Hunting 19 years ago – presented the honour to Lonergan. Damon was a producer on the film.
Meryl Streep used her Oscar show platform to pay subtle homage to the unifying power of film when she joined Javier Bardem on stage at the Dolby Theatre to present the cinematography award.
“Truth is hard to reveal,” Streep said, “but when it happens on the movie screen filmgoers no matter where they are from, feel their hearts soar.”

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch plays a neurosurgeon who is introduced to the world of alternate dimensions by the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). Traveling through space and time, he becomes a modern-day wizard, but, says the film's visual effects supervisor Stephane Ceretti, "We didn't want to do the same kind of magic we've seen in the Harry Potter films or other magic films." So the movie's particular challenge became "making aspects of everyday life behave in a different way, in a way that's not natural."

With “Doctor Strange,” Marvel entered the supernatural realm for the first time, requiring a new set of VFX tricks for Benedict Cumberbatch’s arrogant wizard. They not only found inspiration in “Doctor Strange” comic book artist Steve Ditko’s psychedelic tropes but also Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning “Inception” effect of bending and folding buildings.

There are three major dimensional worlds — Mirror Dimension, Dark Dimension and Astral Realm — each requiring different looks. And Strange’s introduction was called “Magical Mystery Tour” (with VFX created by Method), a film-within-the-film psychedelic journey, leveraging Ditko’s artwork, for starters, where Strange gets pushed out of his body into worm holes and various kaleidoscopic shapes.
