In the aftermath of Must-See TV, there was a stretch of time when it seemed like NBC was doing comedy outreach for TV critics, constantly renewing shows like Parks and Recreation and The Good Place and Superstore not because they had huge audiences, but because the audiences they possessed were fervent and vocal.
With the initial success of the Night Court reboot and the cancelation of the ostensibly edgier or more niche — some, like me, might say “better,” but to each their own — American Auto and Grand Crew, it wouldn’t be unreasonable for NBC to think that the way forward is broader and more traditional comedies.
If NBC’s new Extended Family is an example of that way forward, there are, at least, worse fates. This is a multi-camera family sitcom of the most traditional type, with a premise so thin it’s barely a premise at all. In...

The 2017 biographical drama film Stronger is based on a true story and details the life of Jeff Bauman before and after the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. Bauman was near the finish line when the two bombs detonated, and he recounted his experiences in his 2014 memoir Stronger, which he co-wrote with Bret Witter. The book was used as the source material for the film adaptation.
Stronger stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Bauman and Tatiana Maslany as Erin Hurley, Bauman's girlfriend. Other cast members include Miranda Richardson, Clancy Brown, Carlos Sanz, Richard Lane Jr., Lenny Clarke, Frankie Shaw, Jimmy LeBlanc, Jessica Lundy, Patty O'Neil, and Cassandra Cato-Louis. Most of the characters in Stronger are based on real people, but the story mainly focuses on Bauman, his recovery following the domestic terrorist attack, and his relationship with Erin.

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers face the New York Giants this evening on “Monday Night Football,” it will mark a sort-of reunion — Bucs quarterback Tom Brady reunited with the Giants, the team that most bedeviled him during his legendary run with the New England Patriots. And though Brady’s no longer with the Patriots and the Giants are off to a 1-6 start, the matchup will call to mind for many one of the greatest championship games in NFL history — Super Bowl Xlii in 2008, when Eli Manning’s Giants pulled off a come-from-behind victory, ending what would have been an undefeated season for Brady and the Patriots.
For ESPN reporter Michelle Beisner-Buck, the occasion is both opportunity and challenge. Brady v. the Giants provides an obvious and rich territory to explore in her weekly feature segment on the network’s pregame show “Monday Night Countdown.” But Super Bowl Xlii has...

For the last few years, it has almost felt like a waiting game with Jake Gyllenhaal and the Academy. He has an Oscar nomination, but has been snubbed a few times since then, most notably for Nightcrawler. On Friday, Gyllenhaal turns in one of his very best and most awards friendly performances yet with Stronger, a biopic that manages to subvert the expectations of the genre. Films too often become standard issue when dealing with this sort of subject, but that’s not the case here. It’s damn near perfect and, at least in this writer’s humble opinion, 2017’s best movie to date. It’s a triumph. The movie is a biopic of Jeff Bauman (Gyllenhaal), one of the many affected by the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. He’s a lovable schlub, someone who his on again off again girlfriend Erin Hurley (Tatiana Maslany) adores but can’t rely on.

This year's Atx Television Festival lineup has just gotten even more awesome: The cast of "The West Wing" is one of several new additions now set for a reunion at the event.
Atx Fest announced its updated lineup on Thursday, and the most exciting name is easily "The West Wing," NBC's political drama that ran for seven seasons and racked up multiple Emmy wins (and stole viewers' hearts) from 1999 to 2006. Creator and original showrunner Aaron Sorkin is set to appear, as are the following cast members: Bradley Whitford (Josh), Dule Hill (Charlie), Joshua Malina (Will), Richard Schiff (Toby), and Janel Moloney (Donna).
More actors are expected to join the panel (after all, you can't call it a proper "West Wing" reunion without President Bartlett and C.J. Cregg, a.k.a. Martin Sheen and Allison Janney), which also includes director Thomas Schlamme. The participants will gather in honor of the...

Call Me Lucky
Directed by Bobcat Goldthwait
USA, 2015
Comedian and activist Barry Crimmins is a very simple man. He has but two humble objectives in his life; “Overthrow the United States government and close the Catholic Church.” Bobcat Goldthwait’s assured documentary, Call Me Lucky, spends half its running time paying homage to Crimmins’ invectives and the other half illuminating their painful source. It’s hilarious, heartbreaking, and life-affirming stuff from a director who continues his evolution into a serious filmmaker.
Like Lenny Bruce and George Carlin before him, Barry Crimmins wasn’t afraid to add some substance to his stand-up comedy routine. He championed the Boston-area comedy boom in the ‘80s, leading to an increased awareness of stand-up comedians that continues to this day. Perhaps it’s not a stretch to say there would be no Seinfeld or Louie without Crimmins’ efforts back in the day. A ferocious performer...

It's closing time for Chelsea and her pals. NBC has decided to cancel the low-rated sitcom Are You There, Chelsea? after 12 episodes and one season.
Based on a book by Chelsea Handler, Are You There, Chelsea? follows the life of an opinionated and unapologetic young woman (Laura Prepon) who lives life to the fullest as a cocktail waitress. She's many things to many people -- friend, daughter, sister, and sexually dynamic "advanced drinker." Others in the cast include Lenny Clarke, Lauren Lapkus, Jake McDorman, Mark Povinelli, Ali Wong, and (occasionally) Chelsea Handler.
The sitcom had a decent start -- registering a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.18 million viewers -- but things went downhill from there.
Subsequent episodes of Chelsea saw big drops in the ratings and, over the course of the season, went as low as...

The fate of Gcb, one of our favorite new shows, will be decided in the next few weeks, and right now, there's a 50/50 chance it'll survive. If it does get canceled, at least it'll instantly become a member of what we'll call the Arrested Development/Freaks & Geeks/Firefly club. Shows that were canceled before their time, and have gained cult status since they left the airwaves.

NBC hasn't been having much luck with their new shows this season. Will their latest sitcom, Are You There, Chelsea?, be the exception or is it also destined to be cancelled?
Are You There, Chelsea? follows the life of twenty-something Chelsea (Laura Prepon), an opinionated and unapologetic cocktail waitress. Her life revolves around her work at Jerry's Ultimate Sports Bar in New Jersey. She's surrounded by a unique group of friends and co-workers like Rick (Jake McDorman) the handsome bartender, fellow waitress Olivia (Ali Wong), and quick-witted Todd (Mark Povinelli).
Chelsea and best friend Olivia recently moved in with sweet Dee Dee (Lauren Lapkus), Chelsea's polar opposite. Chelsea's dad (Lenny Clarke) has both a big personality and a big mouth, and her sister (Chelsea Handler) is a conservative new mom.
The series got off to a stellar start (by NBC standards...

NBC established its new "funny women" block of comedy for Wednesday nights by transplanting "Whitney" from Thursdays to serve as the lead-in to Chelsea Handler's new semi-biographical sitcom "Are You There, Chelsea?" (Wed., 9 p.m. Est on Bravo). While it hasn't been too well-received by critics, including HuffPost TV's own Maureen Ryan, audiences got their first chance to see Laura Prepon as Chelsea Newman and Handler as her pious older sister.
The premiere quickly established what kind of person Chelsea is, with audiences meeting her drinking and quickly getting a DUI. There was some fun to be had with Dot-Marie Jones ("Glee") as a cellmate that Chelsea, in a moment of panic, perhaps bonded too closely with. That joke came around full circle again at the end.
The bulk of the episode took place in either Chelsea's new apartment with her best friend Olivia (Ali Wong) and their dippy...

Based on one of Chelsea Handler's bestselling humor books, this new sitcom was originally called Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea. Last summer, three actors were dropped from the series and it got a whole new name (which kinda kills the joke) -- Are You There, Chelsea?. Handler, who has her own talk show, was supposedly too busy to play the title role in the sitcom but has a recurring role as her sister, Sloane.
Laura Prepon (who you may remember from That '70s Show and October Road) plays Chelsea, an opinionated and unapologetic young woman who lives life to the fullest. She works as a cocktail waitress at a sports bar in New Jersey and is surrounded by an eclectic group of friends and members of her family. Others in the cast include Jake McDorman, Ali Wong, Mark Povinelli, Lauren Lapkus, and Lenny Clarke.

Let’s get something out of the way. Work It has been the worst new sitcom to debut in 2012, so far. It is a dreadfully tried and horrendous show about buff dudes who dress like women to get a job and how everyone around them Do Not Notice. The show is tremendously sexist, tremendously dumb, and tremendously cliched. By no means should anyone watch this piece of dreck. Are You There, Chelsea? is, by no means, down in the same league as Work It but it is no classic. It’s not even decent. Based on the first two episodes that was sent out to critics, it is a disappointment, diplomatically-speaking.
For those who are not fans of comedian and late night talk show host Chelsea Handler, Are You There, Chelsea? is based on her autobiography “Are You There Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea”, which centers around her aimless and reckless young adulthood.

Chicago – NBC’s “Whitney” has become an online punching bag this season as Whitney Cummings’ mediocre sitcom dared invade the space occupied by programs like critical darlings “Community,” “30 Rock,” and “The Office.” It was like an icky girl trying to join a pre-teen boy’s club in a treehouse and bringing nothing but cooties. Well, the girl has a friend now.
Television Rating: 2.0/5.0
“Whitney” haters will have a new target with the premiere tonight of the just-as-mediocre “Are You There, Chelsea?,” another comedy that’s far from the worst thing on TV but doesn’t come anywhere near the best either. But, more importantly, doesn’t fit on NBC with its broad humor (no pun intended), laugh track, and stressed punchlines. The reason so many people hate “Whitney” and will hate “Chelsea” is not that they’re horrible — they’re not — but because they’re Nothing like the show that...

Rescue Me's series finale ended with Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary) alive and well — perhaps better than ever.

But let's not forget that, despite the show's happy ending, Tommy technically "died" in the Season 6 premiere after being shot by his Uncle Teddy (Lenny Clarke) in Season 5's cliff-hanger. FX series "Rescue Me" is a tough series to say goodbye to. The group of actors hired were perfect fits for their respective characters. Uncle Teddy Was Lenny Clarke and vice versa. And Tommy's dad, was there ever a more heart wrenching scene than the end of season four when Charles Durning (John Michael Gavin) died in Denis Leary's character Tommy Gavin's arms? Denis Leary's portrayal of Tommy Gavin, rife with survivor's guilt and a lack of any kind of personal discipline to keep his sexual and alcoholic demons in check, made for great TV season after season. Leary's natural high wattage energy was the perfect delivery for Gavin's staccato id, letting loose on his brethren...

'Rescue Me' is fast approaching its swansong. As the cast, crew and fans start to ponder life without the drama, it's been revealed that creator Denis Leary is giving items -- including his firefighter costume and tools -- to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
Executive producer Peter Tolan and actor Lenny Clarke (Teddy Gavin) will join Leary for a donation ceremony at 2Pm Et Thursday.
The objects will join the museum's popular culture history collections. The Smithsonian says today's ceremony is the first in a series of events to mark the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 and examine how it will be remembered and how life has changed.

We bid adieu to showrunner Peter Tolan and actor/producer/writer Denis Leary's outstanding series "Rescue Me," a show that has heart and bawdy humor, and more than a few Emmy award deserving moments from star Leary. The series wraps after this season. Leary played Tommy Gavin, a seriously damaged firefighter grappling with his own survivor's guilt, and the fallout in his personal life post 9-11. The series centered on Gavin and his Fdny firefighters as they dealt with the challenges that come with facing horrific catastrophes. The series was well served by many Boston natives, including comic Lenny Clarke (Uncle Teddy) and Callie Thorne (Sheila). "Rescue Me" returns to FX for its final season on Wednesday, July 13 at...

It's that time again, and NBC has revealed it's 2011-2012 schedule. A couple of things have been kicked to the curb, and a host of new shows are coming to fill things in. I have a preview of the new fall shows, and the full schedule for you. There are a few surprises on the cut and not cut side of things, and the new shows have a bit of something for everyone. As usual, some of the ones that look the best to me are reserved for mid-season. And, NBC has apparently given up on Saturday altogether.
It's a whole lot of info, so let's just jump in.

Is McKinley High unleashing the Beiste... literally? Not quite.
Dot Marie Jones, who plays football Coach Beiste on "Glee," has joined Chelsea Handler's comedy pilot for NBC, "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," as a guest star, according to TVGuide. The project is based on her book of the same name.
Jones will be playing a tough lesbian bully that Chelsea (Laura Prepon) meets and befriends in jail after being arrested for a D.U.I. Fun fact: The part was originally written with Rosanne Barr in mind.
Handler, who is serving as executive producer on the project, will be playing her own older sister. Also starring in the pilot is Lenny Clarke, Jo Koy, Angela Laketa, Lauren Lapkus, Natalie Morales and Mark Povinellini.

Undercovers star Boris Kodjoe has joined ABC's pilot Georgetown, an ensemble drama about young staffers on Capitol Hill. Kodjoe, repped by Gersh and Untitled, will play the Democratic president's fiercely intelligent senior adviser. Tom Arnold has been cast in ABC's half-hour pilot Other People's Kids. The multicamera comedy centers on Adam (Jesse Bradford), a 32-year-old with no responsibilities who suddenly finds himself with an insta-family when he falls in love with an older woman, Michelle (Bonnie Sommerville), who has two kids, an ex-husband and ex-in-laws. Arnold will play the guest starring/recurring role of the lover of Michelle's ex-husband's mother's (Judith Light). Rescue Me alum Lenny Clarke has joined NBC's comedy pilot Are You There Vodka? It's Me Chelsea. Inspired by Chelsea Handler’s bestselling autobiographical book about her party-rich life in her 20s, the Warner Bros/.Werner Entertainment project centers on Chelsea Hanson (Laura Prepon), an alcohol-loving, oversexed cocktail waitress.

Comedy is subjective. Regardless, some comedians do tend to find fairly universal appeal across the lines, but they do it by straddling milquetoast topics and never crossing any lines. Denis Leary isn’t one of those comedians. Most people find him abrasive, others find him unfunny for trying too hard to be controversial, and still others consider him a pale imitation of the late Bill Hicks. Then you have the people who enjoy his angry, outspoken rants and that song he wrote a few years back about being an asshole. In Douchebags and Donuts, Leary, two of his Rescue Me co-stars and comedienne Whitney Cummings team up for about 95 minutes of hit-or-miss comedy punctuated by some of Leary’s songs, which are mostly misses.
Leary kicks off the night with one of his songs about pedophilia in the clergy, a topic that has really been drained of all its juice prior.

In what we think has been the best year in television quite possibly in decades, it's hard not to be excited for the announcement of this year's Emmy nominations. And while some of our favorites were missing from the list we think many categories could have been expanded to ten nominees (like the recent best feature film Oscar move) and still not pay homage to all the great work done this season.
So without further adieu here are our random thoughts on this year's Emmy nominations:
1) Glee dominates. With 19 nods, it was the most recognized series this year. Of course, Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison landed in best actress/actor categories and Jane Lynch made the Supporting Actress list. And it was no surprise either that both Neil Patrick Harris and Kristin Chenowith got nods for guest spots. But, the best and biggest surprise was...

Rescue Me’s sixth season (we’ve been allotted the first four episodes) kicks off as any fan of the show would expect it to – with Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary) lying on the barroom floor where we last saw him. Bleeding out from multiple gunshot wounds inflicted by his Uncle Teddy (Lenny Clarke). I don’t think I’m really ruining anything here by giving up this piece of information – Tommy doesn’t die. Or at least, he doesn’t stay dead. Within the opening moments of the show, Tommy goes to an otherworldly place that may be heaven, or more likely, somewhere else, and is soon brought back. It’s what he sees and feels during his flatlining moments that fuel much of these opening episodes. More after the jump:

Executive producer Peter Tolan and actress Callie Thorne, who portrays Sheila Keefe on the series, recently held a conference call to discuss the end of this hit series. Here's what the had to say.
Mr. Tolan, my question is we've been watching Tommy Gavin and it's been kind of like watching the Titanic sink in ultra slow motion. Is there any hope of him finding redemption or, actually I should say, is there any chance of redemption finding since he doesn't really seem to be looking for it.
Peter Tolan: No, he doesn't seem to be looking. I don't think you want to do a television series for this many years and...

(Unnecessary) spoiler alert: Rescue Me's Tommy Gavin isn't dead.
Even a show with a penchant for keeping dead characters around as ghosts couldn't kill off its lead, right? But last season's finale, which ended with Tommy (series star and co-creator Denis Leary) bleeding out after being shot by his Uncle Teddy (Lenny Clarke), wasn't a total cheat: Tommy fades away just long enough to get a frightening vision of his afterlife.
