There is no shortage of werewolf movies scattered across the century of horror cinema. Whether it’s the original lycanthropic classic The Wolf Man, which spawned the very first shared cinematic universe, or the genre’s still unmatched final form with 1981’s An American Werewolf in London, lycanthropes of all shapes and sizes have loped and howled their way into our hearts through the decades.
But even among those highlights, there’s a certain sameness to far too many werewolf movies: The tragic individual, the creeping dread as the full moon draws near, perhaps a prophecy detailing how the poor soul is doomed to kill even those they love the most when in the grip of the curse, the final fate involving something silver. You know how it goes.
But 2002’s Dog Soldiers dispenses with most of that, allowing the audience’s general pop culture knowledge of the genre to...

October is here and we’re all looking for films to enjoy for Halloween. With a new cinema re-release and digital release for a 4K restoration of Dog Soldiers, it is easier than ever to make this recommendation for the werewolf movie. This is one of the best, if you can go to the cinema to see it, do so.
When a group of foul-mouthed squaddies are out on training in the middle of nowhere, nobody could have guessed their opponents would turn out to be vicious werewolves. Trapped in a family home and surrounded by the hairy beasts, it’s not long before the group find themselves with a no-win situation they must survive, and even worse they may even miss the England vs Germany game.
Many will know Neil Marshall for The Descent,...

Dog Soldiers
Written and directed by Neil Marshall
U.K., 2002
English writer-director Neil Marshall’s value as a commodity in the filmmaking business as cooled off somewhat in the wake of an extraordinary first few years of the new millennium. He mostly concentrates on television now (which, in his defence, is where a lot of incredibly talented people opt to work nowadays), but from 2002 to around 2008, his name was synonymous with terrifically high-octane, bone chilling horror-action films. Things took a turn with Doomsday (2008), which received significant studio backing but flopped at the box office, followed by 2010’s Centurion, which received an extremely quiet theatrical release. Say what one will of his latter theatrical efforts, nothing will quench the lustre of his 2002 debut, the insanely amusing Dog Soldiers.
Set in the Scottish Highlands, Private Lawrence Cooper (Kevin McKidd) is one of a few soldiers assigned to an important drill, the purpose...

Into the Grizzly Maze (2015)

Another Scream Factory release, another controversy. Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition release of Neil Marshall’s Dog Soldiers has been plagued with issues since it was announced. Delays, a lack of source material from which to scan a new transfer. After a year of waiting, some of us assumed that we’d never actually see this release come to fruition. On June 23rd, the wait was finally over, but some people were less than satisfied. Do they have a valid complaint, or is it more anti-Scream Factory hipster nonsense?
The Movie:
First, let’s talk about the movie, then we’ll get into the controversy. Neil Marshall’s Dog Soldiers is one of the last great Werewolf movies. It shouldn’t be hard to do, considering the criminal lack of solid werewolf movies on the market, but sadly, the few that do get made are generally average, or worse.

This week, Scream Factory is celebrating Neil Marshall’s stunning debut feature, Dog Soldiers, with a special Collector’s Edition Blu-ray and DVD combo pack that is nothing short of an amazing feat in itself. And while there has been some controversy surrounding the quality of the transfer (more on that later), what I will say is that regardless, Sf has done an excellent job with their overall presentation of the disc and it’s nice to see the spotlight finally on Dog Soldiers, a film that has flown mostly under the radar here in the States since it was first released back on DVD in 2002.
Dog Soldiers starts off with a weekend military exercise that goes horribly awry, when a group of Scottish soldiers are sent off to a wooded area that also happens to be a haven for strange happenings, as a string of disappearances have occurred there over the years.

[Note: This review is of the full Uncut version of Soulmate shown at last years Frightfest Halloween All-Nighter, which is not the version being released on DVD. The BBFC requested cuts to the opening suicide scene due to "imitable technique" and so director Axelle Carolyn excised the entire scene from the home entertainment release - hopefully that scene will be made available online at some point]
Actress Axelle Carolyn first turned her hand to directing with the well-received short The Last Post in 2011, she followed it up with the short The Halloween Kid, which screened as part of the International Short Film Showcase at Film4 Frightfest in August 2012. Soulmate, her feature directorial debut, stars Anna Walton (who previously worked with Carolyn on The Halloween Kid and will be a familiar face in to genre fans, having appeared in Hellboy 2 in 2008 and The Seasoning House in 2012) and sees a woman, Audrey, retreat to a remote country cottage after attempting to commit suicide due to the sudden death of her husband. But once settled in she soon discovers her safe haven is haunted by its previous owner, and this spirit has some startling links to the nearby local community, especially the strange Zellaby family.

“Dog Soldiers” (2002)
Directed By: Neil Marshall
Written By: Neil Marshall
Starring: Sean Pertwee (Sgt. Harry Wells), Kevin McKidd (Pvt. Cooper), Emma Cleasby (Megan), Liam Cunningham (Capt. Ryan), Thomas Lockyer (Cpl. Bruce Campbell), Darren Morfitt (‘Spoon’ Witherspoon), Chris Robson(Pvt. Joe Kirkley), Leslie Simpson (Pvt. Terry Milburn), Tina Landini (Camper), Craig Conway (Camper), Vilrikke’s Acer (Sam the Dog), Bryn Walters (Werewolf), Ben Wright (Werewolf), Brian Claxton Payne (Werewolf)
Werewolf movies can truly be hits and misses. They are like slasher movies because you feel like you are watching the same plot in every movie that is made about them. This movie is unique as it breaks apart from the traditional format for werewolves in the conventional sense. Thankfully, it is very difficult to get bored during this British horror film!
The plot begins with a group of British military men on a training...

This is the Pure Movies competition for F, directed by Johannes Roberts and starring David Schofield, Eliza Bennett, Ruth Gemmell, Juliet Aubrey, Emma Cleasby, Finlay Robertson and Roxanne McKee. Playing upon current fears around Asbo kids and teachers who are unable to control their classes, F is set wholly within the confines of a British comprehensive school. Overworked and overstretched teacher Mr Anderson (David Schofield) is assaulted by a pupil to whom he has awarded an 'F' grade. Months later, he is still traumatised by the attack. He drinks, and has become obsessed with the increasing violence shown by unruly pupils towards teachers. His daughter – a pupil at the school – wants little to do with him. His colleagues suspect that he is heading for a breakdown; then, one evening, his worst fears become realised. After classes, Anderson, his daughter and a few others remain in the school when a gang...

A school becomes the backdrop for gory Brit horror F, written and directed by Johannes Roberts. For Duncan, it’s a short, sharp shock to the system…
At the core of F is a central theme that will strike a chord with anyone who's ever worked in contemporary education and, in a broader sense, anyone who's ever been frustrated at work. So, that's most of us, then.
F seems born from the out of frustrating political correctness that dominates our world with its ‘softly softly' approach, an outlook backed up by endless litigation from those who sue when burnt by boiling hot water, even if they did spill it on themselves.
Here the film is based around a hard working teacher, Robert Anderson (played by David Schofield), whose life and self esteem are ruined after a violent incident involving a student, even though the act of violence is perpetrated against him.

In the run-up to the release of horror movie, F, we chat to writer and director Johannes Roberts about filmmaking, casting and the concept of Jaws in a school...
The first time Johannes Roberts name first came to my attention was several years ago, when the trailer for his film Forest Of The Damned, was sent to me by a friend under the email heading "Tom Savini vs. naked vampire chicks!", which, obviously, garnered interest.
Not long afterwards he happened to come to my place of work to talk to the students about low budget filmmaking, which is topical, as his latest film, F, is set in an educational establishment and inspired by his experiences of it.
The interview took place a few months ago, before F had been picked up for cinematic distribution, but which now marks his first big screen break. The fil, has since garnered a lot...

David Schofield as Robert Anderson in F is a film from Black Robe productions, which recently had a World Premiere at London's Frightfest (August 27th); now, the film is releasing a trailer. In this short clip, youths terrorize an English teacher for fun, while killing many of the other students in a UK based school. The title F would seem to hint at a failing grade and some kids need to learn how to take a little more criticism. The trailer for the film is inside, courtesy of Twitch Films and a synopsis is available here, from Black Robe Productions.

We’ve just been sent six new images from F, the high school horror that looks set to do for UK schools what cult classic Class of 1984 did for the Us education system…
Welcome to the Class of 2010. The college day ends, the school building becomes a vast complex of dark corridors, eerily quiet classrooms, empty save for a few staff and children. What none of the remaining teachers and pupils realize is tonight is going to be a night they will remember for the rest of their lives. Viciously attacked by a pupil in the past English teacher Robert Anderson was devastated when the governing board refused to back his lawsuit to avoid bad publicity and scandal.
Now a burned-out, world-weary alcoholic trying to reconnect with his daughter, Anderson must finally face his most terrifying demons. For the school comes under relentless attack from a faceless threat intent on causing maximum mayhem.

Deadline discovered today that Optimum, the UK distribution arm of Studio Canal, is set to acquire Johannes Roberts' low-budget horror movie F (first announced here on Bloody Disgusting), and plans to release the shocker this autumn. From the director of Forest of the Damned, the pic follows a group of teachers who must defend themselves from a gang of murderous kids when their school comes under siege after hours. Inside you'll find an extremely bloody image, along with to more from the film starring David Schofield, Eliza Bennett and Ruth Gemmell. "The hoods themselves are played by Parkour specialists - the stuff they do is crazy, darting around up in the rafters in the dark amongst the empty classrooms and corridors - it's really freaky stuff. The other teachers are played by Emma Cleasby (Dog Soldiers) Ruth Gemmell (Fever Pitch), Juliet Aubrey (Constant Gardener, Primeval), Roxanne Mckee (Hollyoaks)."...

Brit director Johannes Roberts made waves in the horror scene a few years back when he created the first Mobile phone series, When Evil Calls. Then in 2007, Roberts worked that series into an extended feature starring Sean Pertwee and Dominique Pinon, which was released by Lionsgate. What he has been working on recently has been a bit of mystery... until now.
His new film is simply titled F (as in the grade) and it looks to be the latest endeavor in Britain's recent wave of what I'm now coining as "hooligan horror" (see Eden Lake). We have received a small synopsis from Roberts, but I can't help but wonder if it will be a revenge movie where a humiliated teacher exacts some justice and hands out fails to all of his rowdy pupils. That would be sweet.
