After the huge success of Fool Me Once, Netflix have commissioned two more Harlan Coben adaptations, here are the details.
The Harlan Coben thriller is quickly becoming its own subgenre. So far, ten of his high-octane, twisty novels have made their way to the screen. Amongst the highlights, Tell No One was adapted into a terrific French film of the same name in 2006, directed by Guillaume Canet and starring Francois Cluzet and Kristen Scott Thomas.
On television, The Five, Safe, Innocent, Just One Look, No Second Chance, The Stranger, The Woods, Gone For Good, Stay Close, Hold Me Tight and – most recently – Fool Me Once have all been adapted variously for Channel 5 and Netflix.
It’s thanks to the huge success of Fool Me Once, which landed on Netflix over Christmas and stars Michelle Keegan, that the streaming service are pressing ahead with two more Coben adaptations, Deadline has revealed.

Juliette Binoche, Marion Cotillard and Jacques Audiard are among 500 French cinema professionals to have signed an open letter in support of a silent march for peace in Paris this Sunday.
The initiative – created in response to the Israel-Hamas conflict and its ongoing reverberations around the world – is being spearheaded by the newly launched Une Autre Voix (Another Voice) collective.
“This fratricidal war affects us all, and regardless of our reasons or affinities on each side of the wall, we want it to cease and that both peoples finally live in peace,” reads the letter.
“This is why we are organizing a silent, united, humanist and peaceful march that will open with a single long white banner. No political claims nor slogans. White flags, white handkerchiefs are welcome.”

Exclusive: Indian powerhouse producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Karan Johar, who have previously collaborated on movies including lauded drama The Lunchbox and TIFF 2023 title Kill, are moving ahead with their Hindi-language adaptation of French smash Intouchables, by hiring director Collin D’Cunha.
The Indian filmmakers first acquired the remake rights from Gaumont almost a decade ago. The original box office sensation, starring Omar Sy and François Cluzet, saw an aristocrat hire a young man from the projects to be his caregiver after he becomes a quadriplegic from a paragliding accident. The movie spawned a string of remakes, including a Telugu and Tamil version, and a U.S. version starring Kevin Hart.
According to the producers, the Hindi adaptation “aims to recreate the magic of the original while adding a unique touch that resonates with Indian audiences”.

Javier Bardem, winner of a San Sebastian 2023 Donostia Award for career achievement, is putting back his on-stage acceptance of the distinction until the 2024 San Sebastian Film Festival.
The postponement is due to the “limits imposed under the strike called by the U.S. Actors Union (SAG-AFTRA),” the San Sebastian Festival announced Friday.
It deprives this year’s Festival of its biggest on-stage major star moment this year.
The fest will, however, enjoy its customary bullish presence of world-class auteurs, led this year by Claire Denis, main competition jury chair, and Victor Erice, will accept his Donostia Award on Sept. 29. San Sebastian announced Friday that Hayao Miyazaki will also accept a Donostia Award online.
Gabriel Byrne, François Cluzet, Emmanuelle Devos, Griffin Dunne, Aidan Gillen, Mads Mikkelsen, James Norton and Dominic West have confirmed their attendance, Byrne and Gillen for one of the festival’s biggest tickets, James Marsh’s official selection closing film “Dance First.

"Sensual. Intimate. Sophisticated. Beautiful." Janus Films has unveiled an official trailer and a new poster for the 4K restoration re-release of Chocolat, the feature directorial debut film from acclaimed French director Claire Denis. This originally premiered at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival and launched the career of this talented female filmmaker. Not to be confused with Lasse Hallström's film Chocolat, which earned five Oscar nominations, this one is an entirely different film - set in Africa. A French woman returns to her childhood home in Cameroon - formerly a colonial outpost - where she's flooded by memories, particularly of Protée, her servant from her time there growing up. Starring Mireille Perrier, Isaach De Bankolé, Giulia Boschi, and François Cluzet. This new 4K digital restoration being released by Janus Films was supervised & approved by director Claire Denis, with a mono soundtrack. Slowly but surely the earlier work of Claire Denis is getting restorations and re-releases, from Beau Travail to L’intrus to No Fear No Die. While we hope Friday Night and US Go Home are in the cards, next up is her 1988 debut Chocolat. Made soon after she worked under Jim Jarmusch and Wim Wenders, the semi-autobiographical feature is based on her childhood in colonial French Africa as the daughter of a civil servant. Set for a theatrical release starting February 24 from Janus Films, the new 4K digital restoration was supervised and approved by director Claire Denis, made by the laboratory Eclair Classics from the original feature negative. Ahead of the release, a new trailer has now arrived.
Check out the trailer and synopsis below.

The steaming chaos and viciously hurled epithets of such reality shows as “Top Chef” and “Kitchen Nightmares” thankfully have no place in “Kitchen Brigade,” which sees a gifted chef train eager amateurs with quiet hauteur, exacting shallot-slicing demands and, in time, a dose of kindness. The stakes are higher, too, in director Louis-Julien Petit’s amiable social dramedy: These young apprentices aren’t sharpening their skills merely to stay in a competition, but to stay in the country, threatened as they are with deportation if they can’t acquire relevant skills. The cruelties of the French immigration system lend a bitter back note to Petit’s otherwise upbeat heartwarmer — a mostly palatable affair that can’t wholly sidestep white-savior cliché in a rushed final course.
Petit’s previous three films — “Discount,” “Invisibles” and the Isabelle Adjani starrer “Carole Matthieu” — established his credentials as a maker of socially conscious entertainments, trading...

"What scares you? The truth." Greenwich Entertainment has debuted a new official US trailer for The Man in the Basement, an eerie French thriller from filmmaker Philippe Le Guay. This is finally opening in the US in January 2023. It first premiered in France in 2021 and has taken a few years to make its way across the Atlantic. After a Jewish couple (Renier and Bejo) sell their basement to a former history teacher, they discover his secret life as an anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist. As the couple struggles to rescind the sale and deal with him, the buyer befriends their naive teenage daughter. The intense French thriller stars François Cluzet, Jérémie Renier, Bérénice Bejo, Jonathan Zaccaï, Victoria Eber, & Denise Chalem. This looks so frustrating! Philippe Le Guay’s “The Man in the Basement” scooped the top prize at the U.K. Jewish Film Festival on Sunday evening.
The 2021 film, which stars François Cluzet, Jérémie Renier and Bérénice Bejo, was awarded the prize for best film.
Runner-up “Karaoke,” from director Moshe Rosenthal, which had opened the festival earlier this month, was given a special mention.
The best film winner was selected by a jury comprised of “Made of Honor” director Paul Weiland, Kefi Chadwick, Liraz Chamami, producer Dominique Green, Sharon Levi and Michael Samuels.
“The jury was impressed by this tense thriller, with its strong performances and direction, and bristling with symbolism that intelligently explores France’s hidden history and contemporary issues around antisemitism,” they said in a statement. “‘The Man in the Basement’ confronts Jewish identity, Holocaust denial and attitudes to France’s Jewish minority, but yet the film still works effectively as compelling and suspenseful storytelling.

Gérard Depardieu plays a veteran movie star with a stalker, while Déborah Lukumuena steals the show as his minder
Here’s an odd-couple comedy drama about a grumpy, cantankerous old movie star called Georges (Gérard Depardieu), who is assigned a tough “minder” called Aïssa (Déborah Lukumuena) to look after him. Why does he need a security guard? Apparently, there’s a stalker issue (a pretty harmless-looking woman camps outside his apartment building) and he also seems to be the target of environmental activists.
Frankly, the premise for Aïssa’s presence in Georges’ life is a bit thin, and this looks as if it’s going to be a sentimental status-disparity movie like the French hit Untouchable, in which Omar Sy played a black caregiver for grumpy white paraplegic François Cluzet (recently remade with Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston). Actually, Robust is a bit more interesting than that and Depardieu and...

Claude Chabrol was the most prolific of the New Wave directors. He didn’t only do murder thrillers; this fine selection of Chabrols from the ten year period 1985-1994 begins with a pair of detective tales but moves on to a masterful adaptation of a great book and two engrossing experiments, one of them picking up where an earlier French master left off. The players are terrific as well: Jean Poiret, Stéphane Audran, Jean-Claude Brialy, Bernadette Lafont, Isabelle Huppert, Jean-François Balmer, Christophe Malavoy, Jean Yanne, Marie Trintignant, Jean-François Garreaud, Emmanuelle Béart, François Cluzet.

"Promise us you won't talk to him." Madman Films in Australia has unveiled an official trailer for The Man in the Basement, an eerie French thriller from filmmaker Philippe Le Guay. It already opened in France this fall, and will be out in 2022 with English subtitles for those intrigued. Yes indeed, this is about a man in a basement. A couple in Paris decide to sell a basement in their building. A very ordinary, nondescript man, Mr Fonzic, shows up to buy it. Nothing unusual, until he moves into the cellar and makes it his permanent residence. But soon they discover that this man who bought it has a troubled past and the couple's life is turned upside down. It stars François Cluzet, Jérémie Renier, Bérénice Bejo, Jonathan Zaccaï, Victoria Eber, and Denise Chalem. This looks quite creepy & unsettling in the best of ways - a guy who doesn't seem threatening is the ultimate manipulator,...

Robert Altman’s 1994 fashion industry satire Prêt-à-Porter is getting a TV series adaptation. Paramount+ is developing a series based on the feature comedy-drama, sources said. It comes from Miramax Television.
Co-written, directed and produced by Altman, the Miramax-distributed film, released in the U.S. as Ready to Wear (Prêt-à-Porter), chronicles the interconnected lives of a group of people in the lead-up to the 1994 Paris Fashion Week, where models, designers, reporters and fashion editors gather to present next year’s trends. (Watch the film’s trailer below.)
Written by Ava Pickett, I hear the series will focus on the next generation, revolving around young people on the first rung of success’ ladder. It is envisioned as an aspirational series about ambition thwarted, youth culture and identity in crisis, and fighting for what you want. Reps for Paramount+ and Miramax TV declined comment.

Now in post, the film shot during the lockdown on location in Paris, with a stellar cast including François Cluzet, Jérémie Renier (“Slalom”), Bérénice Bejo and Jonathan Zaccaï (“The Bureau”).

"To change the world, you've got to risk a little." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for an indie Italian film titled Rose Island, from filmmaker Sydney Sibilia (of the I Can Quit Whenever I Want series). This reminds me of the UK film Pirate Radio about the ship broadcasting in international waters, or about the party-on-a-homemade-raft experiment examined in the doc The Raft. An idealistic engineer builds his own island off the Italian coast and declares it a nation, drawing the world's attention. Values are tested when the Italian government declares him an enemy, but to change the world risks must be taken. This has a more light-hearted, comedic tone to it in addition to its let's-take-on-the-Italian-government boldness. Starring Elio Germano as Giorgio Rosa, Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Tom Wlaschiha, Luca Zingaretti, François Cluzet, Matilda De Angelis, & Ascanio Balbo. This looks like a good story and a fun film! Take a look.

The top 20 titles generated $2.1 million, 4 per cent up on the previous frame, according to Numero.
Directed by Derrick Borte and starring Russell Crowe and Caren Pistorius, Unhinged rang up $701,000 on 193 screens, easing by a mere 12 per cent, upping the total to $1.7 million.

It was the bromance no one saw coming. In January 2009, budding filmmaker Lynn Shelton made her Sundance debut with her third feature film, an improvised offering called “Humpday.” Starring fellow filmmakers Mark Duplass and Joshua Leonard, the film put a nutty twist on the buddy comedy, following a pair of long-time best pals who decide to make their own homegrown porno, featuring the two of them having sex. One problem: they’re not actually gay, and the idea — a product of drunken one-ups-manship — freaks both of them out.
The result was an amiable comedy about two dudes forced to grow up in unexpected ways. Made for less than $20,000, the comedy was a hit on the festival circuit, earning Shelton a special jury Prize at Sundance, the John Cassavetes Award, and inclusion on the National Board of Review’s list of top indie films of the year. Magnolia Pictures picked the film up at Sundance,...

To say that ‘Nous finirons ensemble’ suffers from many of the same problems as its predecessor should come as no surprise. “Les petits mouchoirs” (released as “Little White Lies” in English-speaking territories) was the second most popular film in France in 2010, behind “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” so one cannot fault writer-director Guillaume Canet for wanting to give Gallic audiences more of what they loved the first time around. However, we can fault Canet for the result, a jabbering and ingratiating followup filled with narrative dead ends, unexplored themes and late-inning plot contrivances.
None of these issues seem to bother local audiences, who have made “Nous finirons ensemble” (which translates to “We will end up together”) a hit, albeit a smaller one than its predecessor. Fortunately, considering the first film’s mediocre performance in North America — where it earned just $206,088 of its more than $48 million haul — foreknowledge of “Les petits mouchoirs” is not mandatory,...

This sentimental remake of French heartwarmer The Untouchables pairs a quadriplegic businessman with a black carer Kevin Hart to give unfunny echoes of Trading Places
There’s a downside to this horrific film as steep as the drop from Beachy Head. Theoretically, it’s a remake of Les Untouchables, the French heartwarmer smash from 2011 taken from a true story, starring François Cluzet as a lonely, angry quadriplegic multimillionaire and the redemptive odd-couple friendship he strikes up with his irreverent ex-con carer, played by Omar Sy. The film suggested a matching caste equivalence in their respective disadvantages: physical and socioeconomic.
This version has Bryan Cranston as the wheelchair user, Phillip, a mega-rich business guru and art collector who suffered a catastrophic hang-glider accident. (His single status is moreover explained by having his wife’s cancer death perfunctorily remembered in flashback.) Kevin Hart plays Dell, the fast-talking guy on parole who somehow...

EuropaCorp has made a distribution deal with Pathé Films in France that will see the latter company release three films from Luc Besson’s company over a three-year period. The news Friday comes as reports surfaced earlier this week that EuropaCorp was shuttering its domestic distribution business amid continued financial strain.

The other film noted in today’s announcement is Anna, the EuropaCorp-Lionsgate co-production written and directed by Besson and starring Helen Mirren, Sasha Luss, Luke Evans and Cillian Murphy. Coming off the success of his new movie “Night School,” which became the No. 1 comedy at the box office since last year’s “Girls Trip,” Kevin Hart is ready to show his more dramatic side.
STXFilms, on Wednesday, released the first trailer for dramedy “The Upside,” in which Hart plays an unemployed, down-on-his-luck man with a criminal record who goes to work as a caretaker for a wealthy paraplegic (Bryan Cranston).
The trailer for “The Upside” teases a tender and deep relationship between the unlikely pair, which is sure to pull at audiences’ heartstrings. Hart will offer some levity and comedy as well.

Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp saw a spike in Paris trading Thursday morning after reporting reduced losses in its consolidated results for the year ended March 31, 2018. The producer and distributor saw a net loss of 82.5M euros ($95.4M) for the year, down from the record 119.9M euros ($136M) loss it suffered in the comparable 2016/2017 period.
The company also increased cash flow to 105M euros. Although it was a costly gamble that severely under-performed, Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets was largely responsible for the uptick, as were the beginnings of a restructure as Europa shifts focus to action and sci-fi properties that have historically made up its core.
Last year at this time, Europa was getting ready to release Valerian, a $200M opus, having screened portions of it at the CineEurope exhibition conference in mid-June (execs did not attend this year). The film then went on to gross about $226M worldwide.
