Closing in on one of the leading voices in Caribbean cinema, Sony Pictures Television has acquired from Latido Films Latin American rights to “Hotel Coppelia,” directed by Dominican filmmaker José María Cabral.
Produced by Santo Domingo-based Rafael Elías Muñoz at Lantica Media and Cabral’s outfit Tabula Rasa, “Hotel Coppelia” is a real events-inspired drama, set during the 1965 Revolution in Dominican Republic.

Morena Films, one of Spain’s biggest movie production forces, has closed Spanish distribution on “On the Fringe,” starring Penelope Cruz and Luis Tosar (“The Minions of Midas”).
The feature debut of actor-turned-director Juan Diego Botto, “On the Fringe” (“En las margenes”) will be released in Spain by Vértice Cine.

Spain took the spotlight at the Marche du Film on Tuesday afternoon with a Cinema From Spain panel in which sales agents were given a platform to present one of their features currently selling in the market.
Moderated by Tito Rodríguez, marketing policy director at Spain’s Institute of Cinematography and the Audiovisual Arts (Icaa), the presentation was broken up into four blocks with one dedicated to each of the participating companies: Latido Films, Filmax, Moonrise Pictures and Bendita Films.

Two films that also screened at the San Sebastian Festival compete for the Best Foreign Film in the Spanish Language Award: Pablo Trapero’s "El Clan" (The Clan) screened in the Pearls section following its premiere at the Venice Festival; and Salvador del Solar’s "Magallanes" winner of the Films in Progress Award at the 62nd edition of the Festival, before going on to form part of this year’s Horizontes Latinos selection.
Another three nominated were programmed as part of the Made in Spain section, following their premiere at the Malaga Festival: Daniel Guzmán’s "A Cambio de Nada" (Nothing in Return) , with six nominations, Leticia Dolera’s "Requisitos Para Ser Una Persona Normal," with three candidacies and Gracia Querejeta’s "Felices 140" (Happy 140) , which competes for two awards.

Emily Watson, star of Breaking The Waves, The Book Thief and Everest, is receive the Donostia Award at the 63rd San Sebastian Film Festival (Sept 18-26) in recognition of her 30 years in film.
The British actress will collect the award at a gala on Sept 25 in San Sebastian’s Kursaal Auditorium.
The festival also unveiled some high-profile names and juries for its upcoming edition.
Actors attending include stars of Ben Wheatley’s High-Rise, Sienna Miller, Tom Hiddleston and Luke Evans; Freeheld actress Ellen Page; Sicario stars Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro; Tim Roth, at the festival with 600 Miles and Chronic; Louise Bourgoin, star of The White Knights; and Karin Viard and Isabelle Carré from 21 nuits avec Pattie.

You may recognize the actor from memorable roles as the bad buy in Bad Boys II (Will Smith), Knight & Day (Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz) and Colombiana (Zoe Saldana). His breakthrough Hollywood film was with Blow starring Johnny Depp and another Spanish import, Penelope Cruz. CANNES -- Penelope Cruz has set up her own production house, 88 Producciones, which already has two projects lined up, including one with Oscar-winning director Fernando Trueba, the Spanish actress announced in Cannes. "I think this new facet of my life is going to be very satisfactory," Cruz told a group of Spanish journalists, following Friday's press screening of Official Competition entry Volver. "I'm very stubborn, which isn't so great in other areas of life, but I think will be helpful as a producer." The first project will star Cruz in the English-language Indian Passion, based on Javier Moro's celebrated novel for which Cruz spent seven months pursuing. No director or budget has been decided upon, but it will be shot in France, Spain and India with Sogecine and Fernando Colomo as co-production partners.

MADRID -- Thirty high-profile Spanish directors are teaming up to create a series of television shorts criticizing the government in the run-up to general elections scheduled for March 14, the newly created group called There's a Motive said Thursday. Recent Goya award winner Iciar Bollain, along with Fernando Colomo, David Trueba, Isabel Coixet, Vicente Aranda, Imanol Uribe and Montxo Armendariz are among the directors who will create three-minute segments. The move comes on the heels of the Jan. 31 Goya awards ceremony, at which the Spanish Film Academy turned the gala into a platform against government actions they oppose. The government's handling of an oil tanker disaster, the war in Iraq, the alleged manipulation of information on public television and the rise in domestic violence are a few of the subjects of the shorts that will be entirely funded by the director-producers, the group said.
MADRID -- Looking to score points against U.S. movies, Spain's producers' association FAPAE on Wednesday revealed an advertising campaign designed to encourage local audiences to see more Spanish cinema, with the motto "You urgently need to come see us -- Spanish cinema." The campaign features three different television spots, directed by Fernando Colomo, Manuel Gomez Pereira and Emilio Martinez Lazaro, with clear jabs at importing American culture via movies. One spot questions why Spaniards celebrate Halloween. Another shows two cabbies greeting with an absurd secret handshake. The third interrupts a sentimental moment in a little league baseball game to highlight cultural differences between the scene and Spain, ending with the phrase "we think differently." "We're not going against anyone", FAPAE president Pedro Perez said during the presentation. "We just want to take our natural place."...
