Alfred Hitchcock almost blew it. For most of Psycho’s runtime, the master of suspense lived up to his name, turning Robert Bloch’s pulpy novel into a thrilling mystery with shocking twists. But then, after the revelation of Norman Bates emulating his mother, now a rotting corpse, the movie stops for a psychiatrist to lecture the audience on Freudian theory. Were it not for the chilling closing voiceover by Virginia Gregg as Norma Bates, and Anthony Perkins’ proto-Kubrickian stare at the camera, Psycho may have gone out with a whisper.
As ill-advised as the lecture scene surely is, it did help establish a key element of the slasher genre that followed. Slashers aren’t just about serial killers who pick off victims one by one. They also need to have deeply weird storylines, dealing not only with the killer’s personal hang ups, but also...

Temple Hill Entertainment has had great success with the horror movie Smile, which has earned almost 200 million at the global box office – so it’s no surprise they have just lined up another horror project. Deadline reports that Temple Hill will be producing an adaptation of the Adam Cesare novel Clown in a Cornfield (pick up a copy Here), with Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil and Little Evil‘s Eli Craig on board to direct the film.
Clown in a Cornfield will tell the story of a fading midwestern town, in which Frendo the clown – a symbol of bygone success – reemerges as a terrifying scourge. Cesare’s novel has the following description:
Quinn Maybrook and her father have moved to tiny, boring Kettle Springs, to find a fresh start. But what they don’t know is that ever since the Baypen Corn Syrup Factory shut down, Kettle Springs has cracked in half.

The producers behind 2022's horror hit "Smile" are wasting no time in lining up their next project. And this one has a creepy clown in it! Plus, it is coming from the same director who gave us "Tucker and Dale vs. Evil." The project in question? An adaptation of author Adam Cesare's novel "Clown in a Cornfield." It's early stages, but the pieces on the board are promising.
According to Deadline, Eli Craig has been tapped to direct the film, which is a joint venture between Protagonist and Temple Hill. Carter Blanchard, an uncredited writer on "Independence Day: Resurgence," has been tapped to pen the screenplay. "We love Eli Craig's brand of scary fun and are thrilled to be working with him on this terrifying slasher adaptation that is both timely and timeless," said Temple Hill producers in a statement. "There is nothing wrong with Lucas!" Netflix has released the official trailer for an indie horror comedy titled Little Evil, the latest from Eli Craig, director of the other great horror comedy Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Remember that one? We covered it closely when it opened back in 2010. Little Evil stars Adam Scott as a man who marries the woman of his dreams, played by Evangeline Lilly. The only problem is that her child is the antichrist. Also starring Bridget Everett, Clancy Brown, Tyler Labine, Donald Faison, Chris D'Elia, and Owen Atlas as Lucas. This looks good, don't think we've seen many comedies making fun of the evil child horror trope, but I'm up for this. Glad to see something new from Eli Craig, too. Enjoy. Picture the scene: you’re a stepfather madly in love with the woman of your dreams. Things are going swimmingly, until you discover that her quirky five-year-old son is actually the spawn of Satan.
That is, in a nutshell, the elevator pitch of Little Evil, Netflix’s offbeat new comedy from the mind of Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil). Headed up by Adam Scott (Parks & Recreation) and Evangeline Lilly (Ant-Man and the Wasp), the trailer above introduces us to Gary (Scott), an Average Joe who finds himself smack bang in the middle of a Doomsday conspiracy upon realizing that his new stepson, Lucas (Owen Atlas), harbors all of the qualities of the Antichrist.
The film’s horror callbacks help drive that point home, too, as Lucas is placed face-to-face with an old analog TV (see: Poltergeist) along with the shot of him playing on a rickety old swing a la The Omen.
That is, in a nutshell, the elevator pitch of Little Evil, Netflix’s offbeat new comedy from the mind of Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil). Eli Craig took viewers into the woods for a blood-splattered good time in Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, and he returns to the world of horror comedies for a fun take on The Omen with Little Evil, which is teased in a new trailer ahead of its September 1st Netflix premiere.
"From writer/director Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil); Adam Scott (Big Little Lies, Parks & Rec) and Evangeline Lilly (Ant-Man, Lost) star in this offbeat comedy about love, family, and the Antichrist. Gary has just married the love of his life, Samantha, and is now the stepfather to her quirky 5 year old son, Lucas (Owen Atlas). But he soon finds himself in increasingly odd situations around the child, which drives him to believe his new stepson may actually be the spawn of Satan."

Back in 1990, John Ritter had to deal with his “Problem Child,” but we’d argue his character probably wouldn’t trade places with Adam Scott. The “Party Down” and “Parks & Recreation” star will have his own hellraiser to face in the upcoming “Little Evil.”

If the classic horror movie The Omen was a comedy, it would be this hilarious looking horror/comedy Little Evil. Adam Scott stars in the film a guy named Gary, who married a woman named Samantha (Evangeline Lilly). She has a 6-year-old son and Scott gets the sense that he is the son of Satan and the Antichrist.
What makes the film so exciting is the fact that that is was written and directed by Eli Craig. Who is he you ask? He's the same guy who previously brought us the amazingly funny horror/comedy Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil! This next film of his looks like it's going to be equally as awesome.
It's set to premiere on Netflix on September 1st and I can't wait to see it!

[Welcome back, readers! With the 2017 Sundance Film Festival beginning later this week, we thought it would be fun to take a look back at some of the great midnight movies that have come out of the fest over the years. Be sure to check back here each day this week for more Midnight Memories from Daily Dead!]
“Oh, hidy ho, officer. We have had a doozy of a day.”
I love horror of all kinds, but if I were to pick my favorite sub-genre, it would definitely be horror comedy. Maybe it’s because I’m a big fan of having fun with the genre, as opposed to just pushing myself in order to say I “survived” more challenging material, so anytime a director can cleverly combine thrills, chills, and chuckles into one experience, you can always count me in. Such is the case with Tucker & Dale vs Evil, which made its blood-soaked premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22nd, 2010.
Co-written and directed by Eli Craig, Tucker & Dale vs Evil follows two groups, the first being our titular hillbillies who are heading out to Morris Lake, and the second a gaggle of college kids looking to go camping out in the forest. Tucker (Alan Tudyk...

Set in the 1960s, Mike Flanagan's Ouija: Origin of Evil features a vintage setting for its scares. Playing a key role in bringing the film's bygone era to life is costume designer Lynn Falconer. With Flanagan's latest movie now in theaters, we caught up with Falconer for our latest Q&A feature, and she also provided us with two characters sketches that she did for the film.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Lynn. Were there any specific challenges or rewarding moments that you experienced while working on a horror film set in the 1960s?
Lynn Falconer: Specifically rewarding is finding a funky piece of wardrobe from the past and breathing new life into it by reimagining that piece on a character. I shopped thrift stores, boutiques, and estate sales to find the ’60s period, but while I had a firm rudder for accuracy,...

Netflix can always be relied upon to provide audiences with unexpected gems but, as the streaming service continues to make progress in the production of new material, we not only get to hear about those gems in advance, but we get to anticipate their arrival and consume it immediately upon release. Such is the case with Little Evil – a new comedy coming from writer-director Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale Vs Evil) that is now set to star Evangeline Lilly and Adam Scott.
The premise has great comedic potential, while leaving room for Craig’s trademark scary edge. Gary (Adam Scott) marries Samantha (Evangeline Lilly) and in doing so, gains a six year old stepson (played by Owen Atlas). The honeymoon period is somewhat disrupted, however, because the child is revealed to be the Anti-Christ.

Being a step-dad is a tough gig, but it’s got to be even tougher when the kid you’ve just started parenting happens to be a demon spawn who is destined to lead the armies of Hell in a war against Jesus during the End Times. That’s precisely the situation that Adam Scott will find himself in when he stars in Little Evil, a new horror comedy coming to Netflix. According to Variety, Scott will play a man who marries “the woman of his dreams” (played by Evangeline Lilly) and then has to deal with his suspicions that her son (Owen Atlas) is the Antichrist. Need a good laugh, but only got an hour and a half? Might we recommend this little lot...
I’m of the firm belief that films work most effectively when their runtime is 90 minutes or less. It forces an economy of story and dialogue which propels the film into its best self. No bloated middle, extended ending, or wasted stories here. This goes double for comedies. They should never outstay their welcome. But they seem to be getting longer, as we recently pointed out here.
So to refresh your movie comedy palette, here are 25 films that are 90 minutes or under. I’ve tried to avoid the more obvious ones, and shine a light on those comedies which might have gone a bit unappreciated over the years, but are well worth a hour and a half of your time. This lean runtime isn’t a guarantee of greatness of course,...

Special Mention: Gojira (Godzilla)
Written and directed by Ishirô Honda
Japan, 1954
Ishiro Honda’s grim, black-and-white post-Hiroshima nightmare stands the test of time. This allegory for the devastation wrought on Japan by the atomic bomb is quite simply a powerful statement about mankind’s insistence to continue to destroy everyone and everything the surrounds us. With just one shot (a single pan across the ruins of Tokyo), Honda manages to express the devastation that Godzilla represents. Since its debut, Godzilla has become a worldwide cultural icon, but very little is said about actor Takashi Shimura, who adds great depth as Dr. Yamane; his performance is stunning. Special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya originally wanted to use classic stop-motion animation to portray Godzilla, but time and budget limitations forced him to dress actors up in monster suits. Despite this minor setback, Tsuburaya’s scale sets of Tokyo are crafted with such great attention to detail,...

Winner of the inaugural “Nightfall Award” at the 2015 Los Angeles Film Festival —an accolade bestowed upon the festival’s best horror or "midnight" film— Viet Nguyen’s feature directorial debut “Crush The Skull,” is a hilarious, thrilling hybrid of a heist film and a gory, old-school slasher flick. The screenplay, written by Nguyen and one of the film’s stars Christopher Dinh, skillfully balances comedic moments with frightening, unexpected twists and turns. Nguyen’s direction also adeptly brings many of funny and fear-inducing scenes to life, an effect no doubt bolstered by the excellent performances of a stellar cast that includes Dinh, Tim Chiou, Katie Savoy, Chris Riedell, Lauren Reeder, Walter Michael Bost, Leonard Wu, Jerry Ying and Lincoln Hoppe, in a film reminiscent of other comedy-horror hybrids such as Eli Craig’s “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil” or Drew Goddard’s “The Cabin in The Woods.” Read More: L.A.

After recently watching Marjane Satrapi’s The Voices –a darkly comedic tale about a nice guy who accidentally stumbles into the life of a serial killer- it got me to thinking about some of my other favorite ‘accidental’ killers from cinema over the years. From Veronica Sawyer to Seymour Krelborn to the lovable hillbillies by the name of Tucker and Dale or even the “Flawless Four” from Jawbreaker, here’s a look at some of my other favorite coincidental murderers.
Be forewarned though, some of this may end up being a bit in the spoiler territory so if you haven’t seen any of these films in particular, you may want to skip ahead just in case.

Canada, 2010
Over the years, Canadian film and television has gotten a reputation for being something that leaves a lot to be desired. It’s often depicted as low budget productions with mediocre acting, and a film grain to make you cringe. Except more and more, outstanding Canadian cinema is making headlines in Hollywood for being cutting edge, artistic, meaningful, not to mention downright funny. From the classic Quebec film C.R.A.Z.Y., the franco-anglo production Bon Cop Bad Cop to The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Canadian films are more than just bad film stereotypes; they’re innovative, imaginative, and a joy to watch.
And that goes for their genre cinema too.

Here's some great news for fans of horror comedy. Actors Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine have revealed that the producers are currently looking to get started on a sequel to their 2010 classic Tucker & Dale Vs Evil. It's been on the cards ever since the first film was released and the sooner it arrives the better. While we await further news, let's take a look back at the first movie; Twenty years on from the day of the Memorial Day Massacre a group of college kids venture out into the woods for a camping vacation, only for one of them to get kidnapped by a pair of murderous hillbillies intent on killing everything in their path. So far so unoriginal. Only, this time, the hillbillies in question are Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine), two best friends taking a break at their dilapidated mountain house. When their peace is disturbed...

I interviewed a trio of native-Texas actors at SXSW for the comedy Premature, which premiered at the fest (my review). Alan Tudyk was born in El Paso and grew up in Plano. The veteran of Juilliard has a hefty list of credits in both television and film including roles in Serenity, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, Suburgatory, Arrested Development, Firefly, Dollhouse and V as well as voice performances in the animated films Ice Age (and its sequels), Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen. Due to time constraints, Laurie Coker of True View Reviews and I interviewed Tudyk together.

A lot has changed since Alan Jones from Total Film coined the term Splat Pack referring to a group of gory movie makers who sought to stretch the boundaries of what would be considered acceptable in an R rated film. The sea of blood and guts that rolled across the cinema screen starting in 2002 gradually pulled back to low tide. PG-13 became the new R rating once again and the MPAA decided to pull itself up by its bootstraps to enforce its code. For the Splat Pack, originally consisting of Rob Zombie, Eli Roth (the Frank Sinatra of the Pack according to Quentin Tarantino), James Wan, Leigh Whannell, Robert Rodriquez (added later by association), Greg McLean, Neil Marshall, Alexadre Aja and Darren Lynn Bousman, filmmaking has gone as usual, and each has made a substantial contribution to the horror genre in a positive way, testing the limits of our stomach...

I do not know anyone who saw Tucker And Dale Vs. Evil and did not find it totally and unabashedly awesome. I would even go so far as to put it above Cabin In The Woods in my ‘genre-bending horror movie’ subset. So it is nice for this horror fan to hear that Tucker And Dale director Eli Craig will return to the dark comic genre with Universal’s Little Evil.
The plot of the film is currently being kept under wraps, so any affiliation with Tucker And Dale is purely speculation. But what fun to speculate! Craig wrote the script, and with a title like Little Evil, it sounds at least a bit in keeping with Tucker And Dale. Would it be too much to hope for Little Evil being a sequel (of sorts?) to Tucker And Dale? Could our favorite non-murderous hillbillies be back again? Seriously, I’d...

As much as a brainy psychological drama can sway my emotions and stick in my brain.s craw for months or years afterward, I.m rarely happier than when I.m watching a comedy with humor blacker than crude oil. And while a lot of directors have been successful blending laughs and squirms, too many do it properly once and then never return. To finally get to my point: I have faith writer/director Eli Craig might be one of these guys that could possibly make a career out of black comedies, despite having only directed one feature, two TV episodes and a short film. The Hollywood Reporter identifies Craig.s next film as a dark comedy called Little Evil, which he.d direct for Universal and Scott Stuber.s Bluegrass FIlms. Amazon has looked at its 14 possible pilots, and has deemed Zombieland unworthy of continuing. The pilot, directed by Eli Craig, and from the writers of the hit movie, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, was surely uneven, but it’s perhaps a surprise that the brand wasn’t enough to bring us more. Of course, Amazon was most likely responding to fan response, which clearly was unfavorable.
Rhett Reese relayed the news: “Our Zombieland series will not be moving forward on Amazon…Sad for everyone involved.”
He continued: “I’ll never understand the vehement hate the pilot received from die-hard Zombieland fans…You guys successfully hated it out of existence.”
Meanwhile, Eli Craig has moved onto his next project, Little Evil.
