At 90 years young, there appears to be nothing that will slow Willie Nelson down. “The Red-Headed Stranger” is still doing everything he was doing when he started his career in country music. That includes recording and releasing new music. In fact, Willie Nelson just revealed the release date of his next album. This will be the “Always On My Mind” singer’s 75th album.
The New Willie Nelson Album
Willie Nelson has announced his upcoming album will be titled The Border. This album will not include as many songs as several of his past albums have. The latest album will only have 10 songs.
Of those 10 songs, four of them were co-written by the “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man” singer and Buddy Cannon. Nelson and Buddy Cannon have written songs together for quite some time.

Leading up to the Grammy nominations on Nov. 10, Rolling Stone is breaking down 16 different categories. For each, we’re predicting the nominees, as well as who will (and who should) win on Grammy night.
Americana is a wide-open category, partly because it’s hard to define. “I always look at half of the folk category and think they are more Americana than half of the Americana nominees,” says Nelson Gullett, an Americana radio veteran and music director at Wdvx in Knoxville. And as the nomination of Jackson Browne’s Downhill...

Standing behind a camera atop a tripod onstage at the Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts in Franklin, North Carolina, Lyle Lovett peers into the viewfinder and pauses for a moment before hitting the shutter button.
Lovett’s road manager yells loudly, “Fire in the hole,” as the room goes silent, the only subsequent sound being the click of the camera. The entire scene repeats itself a handful of times before Lovett is satisfied with how the empty venue, soon-to-be-packed with concertgoers, is portrayed.

On paper, Rodney Crowell and Jeff Tweedy seem like an almost too-perfect pairing. Crowell once positioned himself as an alternative to the Nashville machine but, over the last 50 years, has become one of the town’s most accomplished and revered songwriters, while Tweedy is the consummate music nerd with a predilection for outsiders and a longstanding reverence for the classic country-rock of the 1960s and ’70s. Both share instincts for emotionally earnest lyrics and expanding the sonic terrain of traditional folk and blues.
On The Chicago Sessions, named after the Wilco Loft in the Windy City where the album was produced by Tweedy, Crowell’s delight and comfort in working with a kindred spirit is readily apparent. His recent efforts, including 2017’s Close Ties and 2021’s Triage, trend darker than his earlier work, showcasing the deepening crags of his weathered voice on songs about mortality and societal ills. Conversely, right...

“Music was my therapy for the many traumas I suffered as a child,” Lucinda Williams writes in her new memoir, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You. Those traumas include her mother’s mental illness, which created a volatile and often unpredictable environment for Williams and her two siblings, the eventual divorce of her parents, and her own battles with obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, and self-esteem issues. Peppered with flirtatious encounters, doomed relationships with “poets on motorcycles” (including Ryan Adams), and a same-sex kiss on a dance floor, the...

Even with his most successful work, Rodney Crowell knows there’s always room for revision. In 2018, the celebrated singer-songwriter took another crack at the lyrics to “Shame on the Moon,” a 1982 cut recorded by Bob Seger, long after he’d excised it from his own setlists. These ongoing efforts and others are chronicled in Word for Word, a new coffee-table book featuring Crowell’s song lyrics, enhanced by images of the in-progress compositions from the author’s personal notebooks and a lifetime’s worth of photos.

When it came time for Joshua Hedley to begin work on his second album, the polished Nineties country homage Neon Blue, the neo-traditionalist had only one guiding principle: make a record to be played on a pontoon boat.

By the time Emmylou Harris released Luxury Liner, the third and most successful LP of her career-defining “honky-tonk angel” period, on Dec. 28, 1976, the vocalist had cemented a reputation for combining vintage country with impeccably chosen covers from outside the genre.

This year’s South by Southwest Film Festival has showcased several documentaries about successful musicians, including Tom Petty, Charli Xcx and Sparks. But you could argue that they haven’t had one about a better songwriter than “Without Getting Killed or Caught,” Tamara Saviano and Paul Whitfield’s affectionate and lyrical film about Texas-born songwriter Guy Clark, which finally premiered at SXSW last week, a year after being booked for the canceled 2020 edition of the festival.
A plainspoken poet whose first album, 1975’s “Old No. 1,” contained more classic songs than most people can muster in an entire career, Clark racked up hits for people like Jerry Jeff Walker, Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill and the Highwaymen, but rarely showed up on the charts himself until they started measuring the Americana genre, which he pretty much epitomized. Onboard a stormy flight in July 2019, Allison Russell started thinking back to one of the most turbulent periods in her life. The singer-songwriter fled her abusive home as a teenager growing up in Montreal, spending the rest of her adolescence roaming the city’s streets, sleeping in its graveyards, and playing chess late into the early-morning hours in its cafés. Russell remembered something she used to be told by those who didn’t know what she was going through at the time.

“Well, this may seem like déjà vu…” wrote filmmaker Tamara Saviano on her Facebook page this week, alerting friends that her documentary about musician Guy Clark, “Without Getting Killed or Caught” was being announced Thursday as premiering at this year’s South By Southwest Film Festival… just as it was announced for last year. The good news is, this year’s SXSW, being virtual, can’t get canceled (at least short of dire societal circumstances even worse than a pandemic), so the doc is virtually certain to meet its premiere date this time.
Saviano made the tough decision last March to wait it out a year and submit it again in hopes that the festival screening committee wouldn’t have a change of heart. If a film about some of the most celebrated singer-songwriters to ever come out of Texas — Townes Van Zandt also being a primary subject — couldn’t premiere at SXSW,...

At least once a year, Lera Lynn considers quitting music. She says the social media obligations alone have been enough to send her packing. But it’s when she encounters a fellow artist’s particularly stellar album, song, or even video that the singer-songwriter asks herself a recurring question.
“Who am I fooling?” Lynn says. “These people are good. They should be the ones making music, not me. I think that’s something everyone can relate to. There are a bunch of different reasons why one can be discouraged.”
That Lynn,...

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum found the inspiration for its upcoming fundraising event from an unlikely source: penguins.
At the beginning of the pandemic, when museums and nearly everything else were forced to close down, Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium managed to create a viral moment by letting its penguins roam loose in the facility and broadcasting the shenanigans online. The penguins were early quarantine stars. Country Music Hall of Fame CEO Kyle Young was among those watching.
“They were looking at the fish swimming around,” Young recalls.

As graduation ceremonies begin to take place throughout the nation — albeit under strikingly different circumstances than last year’s — we look back at one of country music’s most acclaimed graduates, J.R. Cash, who 70 years ago on this date earned his Dyess High School diploma in the tiny town of Dyess, Arkansas. Less than a decade later, after graduation and military service, he would begin his recording career, on the way to becoming Johnny Cash.

Covers albums are often a letdown, mostly unnecessary projects that leave you wondering why the artist devoted valuable time to singing someone else’s songs instead of working on their own. Ronnie Dunn’s Re-Dunn — what a title! — is among the rare exceptions.
Out January 10th, the 24-track collection finds the Brooks & Dunn vocalist somehow making songs we’ve all heard innumerable times (Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down,” Strait’s “Amarillo by Morning,” Pure Prairie League’s “Amie”) sound vital and electric. We asked the newly minted member...

Fans of Linda Ronstadt have swooned over her voice, a powerful instrument that can blast the dust off an Everly Brothers classic and breathe new life into jazz and mariachi standards. Yet what comes through most strongly in a recent documentary about the singer is the way she used her vocal abilities to call attention to the work of others.
“I can always do a harmony part,” Ronstadt says in a recent interview.
The film, “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” airs on CNN at 9 p.m. on New Year’s Day after a recent theater run, and tells the story via a time-capsule of clips, video moments and Ronstadt’s own words of how the singer captured public fascination with her carefully chosen covers of tunes by Roy Orbison, Clint Ballard Jr. and Warren Zevon, among others. But it also depicts her knack for helping those whose efforts...

The latest episode of the long-running live-music series Austin City Limits includes a loving tribute to the songs of the late, great Guy Clark, who died in 2016. Hosted by Steve Earle, and featuring his band the Dukes, the hour-long episode includes Clark and Earle’s fellow Texans, Rodney Crowell, Joe Ely, and Terry and Jo Harvey Allen.
Kicking off the episode is Earle’s stirring performance of Clark’s wistful “Dublin Blues” — the title cut off the songwriter’s 1995 album — which opens with the sweetly prophetic line, “I wish I was in Austin.
