With the box office smash Moana 2 crushing box office records, Disney has added another monster musical to their filmography. Few companies are more associated with the genre than Disney. Not only do they win big prizes in film, but Disney Musicals have taken over Broadway for years at a time. Moana 2 will still pocket several hundred million dollars before it’s done. That, as well as the impending release of Mufasa, make this the perfect time to look back over the best Disney Musicals in history.

Of note, this is a contentious discussion, to say the least. There are dozens of movies and musicals to choose from, all with valid rationales behind their inclusion. This required some hardline rules, which eliminated a few movies in the process. To qualify, we required four songs, sung for the purposes of plot by a character in the movie, to be eligible for inclusion.

As the Sundance Film Festival weighs the possibility of leaving Utah, its rebellious younger sibling has already packed its bags.

Slamdance, the unaffiliated festival that has run parallel to Sundance and celebrated outsider cinema in Park City since 1995, has officially relocated to Los Angeles. Amid The Princess and the Frog celebrating its 15th anniversary, star Anika Noni Rose is looking back on starring in the animated film.

In an interview with People magazine published Wednesday, the actress reflected on lending her voice for the film’s starring role as Princess Tiana.

She recalled that during her final audition, she “burst into tears” while walking the hallway in Walt Disney Animation Studios and seeing art from previous films.

“I just couldn’t believe it. I always wanted to be a Disney voice, always,” she said. “I didn’t have to be a person. That didn’t matter to me. I would have happily been a mushroom. I would have been a tree. I would have been a rock. I would have been whatever.”

Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” begins with the voice of James Earl Jones, followed by a title card that reads, “In Remembrance.”

Jones, who died in September at 93 years old, originated the voice of King Mufasa in the 1994 Oscar-winning animated feature “The Lion King,” its direct-to-video sequels and the 2019 live-action remake. Jones did not return for the prequel, which opens in theaters on Dec. 20.

Barry Jenkins, who helmed “Mufasa,” tells Variety why he decided to open the movie with a tribute to the late actor. “When I think about what James Earl Jones means, not even just to me, but to global audiences — people know this — I grew up without a father figure, and you go in and you watch this art, you watch these films, sometimes these fathers in these movies become a stand-in for that,” he says. “They become these father figures.”

Walt Disney Records will release the songs only and deluxe versions of Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King original motion picture soundtrack. The soundtrack is available to pre-add and pre-order now.

Eight new character posters for Mufasa: The Lion King have found their way online this morning (via Toonado.com) along with a new featurette to celebrate tickets for the live-action prequel going on sale. 

"Taka" will, of course, eventually be known as the villainous Scar, but it's Kiros who we expected to be this movie's big bad. We also see fan-favourites like Timon and Pumba, Rafiki, and Zazu. 

The final trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King was released at D23 Brazil (you can watch it here if you missed it) but we'd imagine Disney plans to pull out all the stops in the coming weeks.

Disney has just dropped the final trailer for Barry Jenkins' Mufasa: The Lion King (via Toonado.com) featuring younger versions of characters like Mufasa, Scar, Sarabi, Rafiki and Zazu before they called Pride Rock home.

Just like 2019's The Lion King, this movie looks visually stunning; the main difference here is that we're getting an original story rather than what many felt was little more than a shot-for-shot remake of the 1994 cartoon from filmmaker Jon Favreau.

Similar to this summer's awesome Transformers One, it looks like we'll meet many familiar characters in their early years and watch as the friendship between Mufasa and Taka (a.k.a. Scar) crumbles and ends with them becoming bitter enemies.

Exclusive: Briarcliff Entertainment has acquired North American distribution rights to director Rob Edwards’ sneaker-themed animated movie Sneaks, voiced by Anthony Mackie, Martin Lawrence, Oscar nominee Laurence Fishburne, Chloe Bailey, and Grammy-winning producer Mustard.

"The Thing" is the kind of film that, decades after its release, finds strength in its ambiguity. Some watch John Carpenter's seminal horror classic and see an allusion to the AIDS crisis of the '80s. Others say it represents the inherent fear of the Other. It can be all of those things — and more if you think hard enough — as "The Thing" remains surprisingly timeless. That's due in part to the theme that Carpenter chose to focus on throughout the film: not only did it give this story a clear through line, but it also helped Carpenter score his leading man, Kurt Russell.

FX is heading back to Oklahoma. The network has picked up a drama pilot from creator Sterlin Harjo (“Reservation Dogs”) and star Ethan Hawke to series, Variety first reported and Gold Derby can confirm.

The series’ plot details are being kept under wraps, but it’s described as “a Tulsa noir about a guy (Hawke) who knows too much.” It’s a reunion of sorts for Harjo and Hawke, as the latter guest-starred in the second-to-last episode of Harjo’s FX comedy series “Reservation Dogs.” Harjo created the new series and directed the pilot and will serve as executive producer. Hawke will also serve as executive producer. Garrett Basch (“Reservation Dogs”) is also an EP.

FX has picked up Sterlin Harjo’s drama pilot starring Ethan Hawke, Deadline has confirmed.

We broke the news in February that the project had been given a pilot order which reunites Harjo, co-creator, executive producer and showrunner of the network’s acclaimed series Reservation Dogs, with Hawke, who appeared in the Emmy-nominated series’ penultimate episode.

Created by Harjo, the drama is a Tulsa noir about a guy (Hawke) who knows too much.

The pilot cast includes Keith David, Siena East, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tim Blake Nelson, Scott Shepherd, Tracy Letts , Kyle Maclachlan and Macon Blair.

Reservation Dogs co-creator and showrunner Sterlin Harjo has his next series at FX.

The Disney-owned outlet has placed a series order for a drama starring Ethan Hawke (who guest-starred on the final season of Reservation Dogs). The untitled series, formerly known as The Sensitive Kind, is set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and is said to have a film noir vibe centering on Hawke’s character, a “guy who knows too much.” Other details are being kept quiet for now.
