James Gunn’s Dcu is officially underway and it is high time a few casting choices are made for some key characters in the universe. The filmmaker and co-chief of DC Studios has maintained that no greenlight will be given for a project unless it has a solid script and seems to be giving time to set up solo films. However, all of them need to lead up to a huge villain.
Josh Brolin, who played Thanos in the MCU, recently shared a fanart of himself in the design of Darkseid. This fueled the rumors that Brolin was still in talks with Gunn after he refused the offer to play Hal Jordan a.k.a Green Lantern in the Dcu. While casting Brolin as Darkseid, who is basically DC’s Thanos is not a good choice, there are other actors who fit the bill.

Christmas is almost here, and that means it’s time to break out those classic and nostalgic Black-led holiday flicks.
When it comes to Black Christmas cinema, the Black community takes it very seriously, as there’s literally a debate online almost every year about which Black Christmas movies are the best, which ones aren’t Christmas movies at all, and the movies you have to have seen in order to not have your “Black card” revoked.
The Preacher’s Wife and Friday After Next are definitely Christmas movies.

With the box office smash Moana 2 crushing box office records, Disney has added another monster musical to their filmography. Few companies are more associated with the genre than Disney. Not only do they win big prizes in film, but Disney Musicals have taken over Broadway for years at a time. Moana 2 will still pocket several hundred million dollars before it’s done. That, as well as the impending release of Mufasa, make this the perfect time to look back over the best Disney Musicals in history.
Of note, this is a contentious discussion, to say the least. There are dozens of movies and musicals to choose from, all with valid rationales behind their inclusion. This required some hardline rules, which eliminated a few movies in the process. To qualify, we required four songs, sung for the purposes of plot by a character in the movie, to be eligible for inclusion.

Plot: The origin of Mufasa (voiced by Aaron Pierre), the future lion king who, as a cub, is separated from his family and taken into the pride as an outsider, only for him to prove himself the most truly worthy heir to the throne.
Review: Here’s the funny thing about the 2019 remake of The Lion King – it might be one of the most successful films ever to leave virtually no cultural footprint. Think about it – the movie grossed an insane $1.6 Billion. Usually, that would have been enough to propel it into becoming a monster franchise. Still, thanks to Covid and the basic state of the industry, it’s taken over five years for us to get a follow-up, and it seems likely to only gross a fraction of what the original film did. Frankly, as successful as the Jon Favreau film was, people still think of the cartoon when...

2019's remake of Disney's The Lion King (1994) might have made bank at the box office, but many felt that it was essentially a shot-for-shot rehash of the original animated feature. However, Disney might remedy this stigma with a new origin story for Mufasa and Scar in Mufasa: The Lion King (2024)
The new film opens a new chapter on the Lion King mythos, and features a perspective on the story generations of Disney fans are so overtly familiar with, but can it break the stigma surrounding Disney's live-action remakes? This writer had an opportunity to see an early showing, and here's what fans can expect from this return to Pride Rock.

Mufasa: The Lion King Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr, Tiffany Boone, Kagiso Lediga, Preston Nyman, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, John Kani
Director: Barry Jenkins

What’s Good: The film’s visual fidelity is impressive, making it look like real animals are being filmed.
What’s Bad: The film lacks any meaningful justification for its existence, making the story feel rushed and slow. There is no clear vision.
Loo Break: The music numbers are a low point in the film, so if you need a break, the start of a song is the perfect signal to go for one.
Watch or Not?: Sadly, this movie is a big pass, but there are better movies to watch during the holidays.
Language: English (with subtitles).

As the Sundance Film Festival weighs the possibility of leaving Utah, its rebellious younger sibling has already packed its bags.
Slamdance, the unaffiliated festival that has run parallel to Sundance and celebrated outsider cinema in Park City since 1995, has officially relocated to Los Angeles. In addition to its lineup — which features 146 films, with all competition titles hailing from first-time directors at budgets of $1 million or less — Slamdance has announced more details about its plans to run a Los Angeles festival. Screenings will take place at the Director’s Guild of America and Quixote West Hollywood, with a special opening night event at the Egyptian Theater on February 20. Jon Favreau’s photorealistic remake of The Lion King from 2019, like many of the other various live-action Disney remakes over the years, offered no real justification for its existence beyond being a showcase for the impressive technology powering the animation. Which makes Barry Jenkins’s Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to 1994’s The Lion King, all the more impressive for actually having something worthwhile to impart to audiences.
Mufasa, unbound by having to recreate large swaths of the original Lion King whole cloth, was clearly allowed to be a product of its director. Yes, it features big cats that talk and sing, but it’s fundamentally the story of an orphan, Mufasa (Aaron Pierre), who transcends hardship to lead those in his community. By forging a closer relationship with his loving adoptive mother, Afia (Anika Noni Rose), rather than his abusive adoptive father, Obasi (Lennie James), Mufasa develops the...

Amid The Princess and the Frog celebrating its 15th anniversary, star Anika Noni Rose is looking back on starring in the animated film.
In an interview with People magazine published Wednesday, the actress reflected on lending her voice for the film’s starring role as Princess Tiana.
She recalled that during her final audition, she “burst into tears” while walking the hallway in Walt Disney Animation Studios and seeing art from previous films.
“I just couldn’t believe it. I always wanted to be a Disney voice, always,” she said. “I didn’t have to be a person. That didn’t matter to me. I would have happily been a mushroom. I would have been a tree. I would have been a rock. I would have been whatever.”
“I was walking through the halls of the history of my childhood, and at that same time, I felt in my bones this was for me.

The first reactions to Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” have started pouring in on social media, and members of the press are roaring with excitement over the prequel to the 2019 photorealistic remake of “The Lion King.”
“‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ is the perfect prequel,” wrote Variety‘s senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay. “So beautifully crafted. The songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda and score are absolutely divine and music to the ears. Pure joy.”
Dana Abercrombie, entertainment editor for The Koalition, praised the film as “a story that deserves to be told that makes you question what is destiny. Expertly written & crafted, it adds to ‘The Lion King’ franchise by adding more dimension to the characters we love & thought we knew. The visual effects are astounding.”

Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” begins with the voice of James Earl Jones, followed by a title card that reads, “In Remembrance.”
Jones, who died in September at 93 years old, originated the voice of King Mufasa in the 1994 Oscar-winning animated feature “The Lion King,” its direct-to-video sequels and the 2019 live-action remake. Jones did not return for the prequel, which opens in theaters on Dec. 20.
Barry Jenkins, who helmed “Mufasa,” tells Variety why he decided to open the movie with a tribute to the late actor. “When I think about what James Earl Jones means, not even just to me, but to global audiences — people know this — I grew up without a father figure, and you go in and you watch this art, you watch these films, sometimes these fathers in these movies become a stand-in for that,” he says. “They become these father figures.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda is "very proud" of a ballad he's written for ' Mufasa: The Lion King'.The 44-year-old composer has written the soundtrack for the upcoming Disney prequel and wanted to pen a song that lived up to the standard of Sir Elton John's 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight?' from the original 'Lion King' and Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson's 'Beauty and the Beast' theme, and thinks he's managed to his his target. He told The Times newspaper: "There is a ballad that I’m as proud of as anything I’ve written..."The Disney ballad collection is an intimidating set of tunes. I’m very proud of my entry into the canon, but that might not be at all what people take away.”But Lin-Manuel admitted he has been surprised in the past with which of his songs have proven popular,...

It can’t be denied that as far as the old-time action heroes go, Steven Seagal doesn’t get much respect these days. A whole lot has been written about Steven Seagal’s behaviour off-screen (much of it by us), and I’m not going to rehash it all here, but suffice it to say there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of goodwill left over for the former ponytailed action hero. While many would say he’s become a parody of himself in recent years, one shouldn’t forget that, at the start of his career, Seagal was ultra-popular. His Aikido moves, plus his tall, almost lanky figure and quiet demeanour made him unique among action heroes of the day. And, if you look at his filmography, his first five movies are really good as far as action flicks of the era go. Everything else? Well, not so much,...

Eight new character posters for Mufasa: The Lion King have found their way online this morning (via Toonado.com) along with a new featurette to celebrate tickets for the live-action prequel going on sale.
"Taka" will, of course, eventually be known as the villainous Scar, but it's Kiros who we expected to be this movie's big bad. We also see fan-favourites like Timon and Pumba, Rafiki, and Zazu.
The final trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King was released at D23 Brazil (you can watch it here if you missed it) but we'd imagine Disney plans to pull out all the stops in the coming weeks.
Fans expected Jon Favreau's The Lion King to receive a follow-up of some sort, and this original story taking place long before we met Simba undeniably intriguing, especially with filmmaker Barry Jenkins at the helm.

Ken Burns’ latest documentary masterwork, a pioneering two-part series that transforms our understanding of one of history’s most astonishing polymaths, brings Leonardo da Vinci’s art and science to vivid life. Burns, along with his daughter Sarah and son-in-law David McMahon, creates an immersive investigation of a genius centuries ahead of his time.
This four-hour documentary deeply explores Leonardo’s incredible life, nuancedly portraying a man who flawlessly combined art, science, and imagination. The series focuses on fewer than ten completed paintings while revealing hundreds of notebook pages overflowing with revolutionary ideas, revealing Leonardo’s restless intellectual drive.
Burns and his team have produced something more than a typical biographical documentary. They created a dynamic visual narrative that captures Leonardo’s distinct viewpoint with split screens, historical footage, and imaginative cinematography. Keith David narrates the documentary and features an intriguing musical composition by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw, bringing Leonardo’s world to life.

Disney has just dropped the final trailer for Barry Jenkins' Mufasa: The Lion King (via Toonado.com) featuring younger versions of characters like Mufasa, Scar, Sarabi, Rafiki and Zazu before they called Pride Rock home.
Just like 2019's The Lion King, this movie looks visually stunning; the main difference here is that we're getting an original story rather than what many felt was little more than a shot-for-shot remake of the 1994 cartoon from filmmaker Jon Favreau.
Similar to this summer's awesome Transformers One, it looks like we'll meet many familiar characters in their early years and watch as the friendship between Mufasa and Taka (a.k.a. Scar) crumbles and ends with them becoming bitter enemies.

For three decades the story of stone creatures come to life has both entertained and fascinated viewers. Originally airing on a program block associated with light hearted children’s entertainment showed that animation could be much more than just “kids stuff”. Let us revisit the mysterious and enchanted world of Disney’s Gargoyles.
Created by producer Greg Wiseman, the series stood out against its contemporaries at the Disney Afternoon program block. Unlike other shows focused on gags and slapstick comedy, Gargoyles took a darker and more episodic approach similar to Batman: The Animated Series, which aired around the same time.
The series saw a group of Gargoyles who had been frozen for millennia awaken in New York City. They decide to make the city their new home and defend it from various threats.

The college world is a strange place where people from wildly different generations and walks of life can form quasi-familial groups before going their separate ways, never to meet again. It's only with hindsight that you realize just how unusual the experience is, at least if you came into it as an 18-year-old suddenly thrust into the swimming pool that is adulthood and desperate to keep your head above the water. Dan Harmon's "Community" isn't the most realistic comedy show about college on the surface -- in fact, the further along it went, the more untethered and cartoonish it became -- but it is one of the most honest ones. It knows what it feels like to be in that world, and its potpourri of loving pop culture parodies, satirical jabs at community college politics, and earnest character work served to capture the experience of aspiring to mature as...

"The Thing" is the kind of film that, decades after its release, finds strength in its ambiguity. Some watch John Carpenter's seminal horror classic and see an allusion to the AIDS crisis of the '80s. Others say it represents the inherent fear of the Other. It can be all of those things — and more if you think hard enough — as "The Thing" remains surprisingly timeless. That's due in part to the theme that Carpenter chose to focus on throughout the film: not only did it give this story a clear through line, but it also helped Carpenter score his leading man, Kurt Russell.
Carpenter and Russell worked together twice before teaming up for "The Thing," but the actor needed just a little convincing before joining the project. Russell recounted his early conversations with Carpenter in a retrospective with GQ, and the pitch that ultimately inspired him to join the film.
