Adrien Brody has won the Best Actor Oscar for his turn in A24’s The Brutalist, clinching the statuette two decades after his first win for Roman Polanski’s The Pianist.
“I’m here once again to represent the lingering traumas and the repercussions of war and systematic oppression and of antisemitism and racism and othering,” Brody said in a lengthy acceptance speech Sunday at the Dolby Theater. “I pray for a healthier and a happier and a more inclusive world. And I believe if the past can teach us anything, it’s a reminder to not let hate go unchecked. I love you and I appreciate you all. Let’s fight for what’s right.”
Brody began his speech by thanking God “for this blessed life,” and for “the tremendous outpouring of love” that he’s felt from so many. He went on to speak to the “fragile” profession that acting is,...

The winner for Best Actor has just been announced at the Academy Awards. The Oscar has gone to Adrian Brody for his role in the acclaimed A24 film The Brutalist.
At the Oscars on Sunday, Brody won his second Oscar for Best Actor based on his performance in The Brutalist. He previously won in 2003 for The Pianist, which set the record as the youngest-ever winner of that award; Brody was 29 at the time. For his second Oscar win on Sunday, Brody wanted to be sure he got to thank everyone he wanted to, and that meant refusing to wrap up when music started to play during his speech, which typically serves as the cue for an Oscar winner to conclude with the speech.

“The Brutalist” tells the story of Holocaust survivor and Hungarian-born Jewish architect, László Tóth, played by Adrien Brody. The movie, which is directed by Brady Corbet and produced by Corbet and Mona Fastvold, is not based on a true story.
“The Brutalist” was shot in 35mm and scanned at a resolution equivalent to 70mm (and exhibited in 70mm) — and clocks in at over three hours long, an enormous feat.
In TheWrap’s positive review out of Venice, critic Ben Croll wrote, “Taken as a whole, ‘The Brutalist’ both mourns and celebrates American ambition – the ambitions of an immigrant class trying for a new life with no guarantee of success, and the ambitions of a filmmaker filling a canvas with a lifetime of obsessions.”
The movie premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year, where Corbet won the Silver Lion. It was also shown at the Toronto International Film Festival and...

Dark screens are broken by the reading of a letter, and a scramble of people across the screen, all of them fighting to see their new world of freedom. The land of dreams: America. The crashing brass of an overture fills the room, and you sit up, realising this is something very different. When movies were in their golden age and films felt like an event, an overture would often ring out before any images were seen, or over the opening titles. Think of films such as Lawrence of Arabia, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Ben Hur, Gone with the Wind, and many more. Revered French auteur Claire Denis is in advanced talks to direct cannibalistic crime drama “The Soap Maker.”
The project, being shopped around at Berlin’s EFM, is an updated remake of Italian director Mauro Bolognini’s 1977 cult movie “Gran Bollito,” which starred Shelley Winters as a serial killer who cooked the bodies of her victims into soap, cake and cookies.
The English-language film is inspired by the true story of Italy’s Leonarda Cianciulli, who in the late 1930s and early ’40s murdered three local women in the central Italian town of Correggio and disposed of their bodies with chemicals — using what was left to make soaps, candles, cookies and cakes that she shared with people in her community.
“The Soap Maker,” which is lead-produced by the Los Angeles- and New York-based Gerry Pass via his Chrome Entertainment shingle, is being packaged by CAA and has been pitched to prospective buyers at the EFM.

It’s nice when promises are kept, nicer yet when those promises are a new Claire Denis movie shooting in a matter of months. Following September’s report that she’d roll cameras on Le Cri des Gardes (The Cry of the Guards) in January, Deadline informs us the previously involved Riley Keough has been swapped for Mia McKenna-Bruce (How to Have Sex) as the project rolls cameras as soon as next week. She’ll be playing Leoné, mentioned in this plot description from autumn:

Inflexible, hovering like a ghost in the darkness, he is determined to stay there until they return the body of his brother to him, who was killed on the site.”

Adrien Brody discusses his disappointment to have originally missed the lead role of The Brutalist, only for the opportunity to come back around.
The Brutalist, an upcoming film by beloved mid-budget studio A24 (who have produced such classics as Everything Everywhere All at Once and Midsommar), tells the story of László Tóth, a Jewish Hungarian architect, who over the course of decades attempts to find his place in America after the Holocaust. The film has received rave reviews, which doesn't appear to have surprised its star, Adrien Brody. He knew this film was something special from the moment he read the script, and he was eager to get the chance to play the part of Tóth.

Spoiler Alert: Spoilers follow for The BrutalistBrady Corbet’s The Brutalist is one of the buzziest movies of 2024. Against all odds, the film lives up to the hype — The Brutalist is a staggeringly ambitious, enthralling spectacle that feels almost like a classic from the 1970s. It very well might be the best film of the year, period, and it seems a given that it’ll be an Oscar contender.
Clocking in at a runtime of just over three and a half hours (including a fifteen-minute intermission), the film is a massive undertaking, but it somehow feels half its length. Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist has been lobbed no shortage of compliments like “majestic,” “monumental” and “masterpiece,” to name just a few. But none of those words are surprising to star Adrien Brody who knew straight away after reading it that it was something special.
“I was so moved by it and saw such potential because the script was so beautiful. The breadth of it was so complex and nuanced,” Brody told The Hollywood Reporter at the A24 film’s recent Los Angeles premiere. “Then I met with Brady and found him to be intellectually stimulating, to say the least. That was about five-and-a-half years ago or so at this point. But then they went in another direction with it, and the movie went away.”

The ever-talented Felicity Jones continues to prove her on-screen talents following a run of successful leading roles over the years, from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to The Theory of Everything — the latter earning her an Academy Award nomination. Her latest awards contender, the A24 film The Brutalist, finds Jones alongside Oscar-winner Adrien Brody. They play a Hungarian refugee couple seeking a fruitful life in post-World War II America. Jones plays a sharp-witted but disease-stricken writer named Erzsébet, whose skilled architect of a husband, László (Brody), arrives in America far before she does. They finally reconnect in the U.S. while he's busy bringing to life an epic project thought up by a wealthy American industrialist named Harrison (Guy Pearce).

Amazon MGM is getting into the race car business thanks to news that a new drama series centered around the world of Formula 1 is being developed for Prime Video. The best part? Felicity Jones is set to lead the cast of what's being titled One, which is the first-ever sanctioned scripted series by the Fia.
Per Variety, Jones is set to both lead and executive produce One, which is said to "focus on a failing family-owned racing team, led by Jones’ character, as it contends with fierce personalities, ever-changing rivals and multi-million-dollar stakes." It should be made clear that, as of right now, the F1 drama is currently in the developmental stage, and an official series order has yet to be made by Amazon, meaning that there is still a slight chance that things could fall apart. Jones will produce through her Piecrust Pictures label, while Mark Fergus and...

The method dressing trend took a Wicked turn over these past few months as stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo delivered a high-profile parade of pink and green ensembles that went viral on Instagram or TikTok with every appearance. After those eye-catching looks, you would be forgiven for not clocking Felicity Jones’ recent appearance at the Los Angeles premiere of The Brutalist as being the newest example of the red carpet craze.
“This look is inspired by brutalist architecture,” Jones explained to The Hollywood Reporter of her black Proenza Schouler dress from the house’s Spring 2025 collection. The dress features a cut-out design up top and a car-wash-style skirt on the bottom with grommet details. “That was the idea with the dress, which has very strict rectangular forms and quite blunt cuts. It’s a dress that felt like it was an appropriate look for the film.”

Plot: In the aftermath of WW2, László Tóth (Adrien Brody), a Hungarian-born Jewish architect who survived the holocaust, emigrates to America. While there, he gets a taste of the American dream from a wealthy benefactor (Guy Pearce), although success may carry a price too difficult to bear.
Review: It would be fair to say there hasn’t been a movie like The Brutalist in about forty years. One-time actor Brady Corbet, who emerged as a director following The Childhood of a Leader and the underrated Vox Lux, makes movies in the vein of David Lean, with this telling a deeply personal story on an epic scale the likes of which we haven’t seen in a long time. Shooting in 70mm VistaVision, The Brutalist is a three-and-a-half hour masterwork (with an intermission) that will go a long way towards establishing Corbett as one of the great modern directors.

As one of the last major Oscar contenders to release in 2024, finding out where to watch The Brutalist is a significant question for all awards season enthusiasts. Ever since Brady Corbet's movie debuted at the Venice International Film Festival, it has been seen as a contender for the 2025 Oscars season. Starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, and others, The Brutalist follows Brody's character, László Toth, as he journeys to America to start fresh and blazes a trail thanks to incredible architectural abilities. It put Adrien Brody firmly in the list of predicted 2025 Oscars Best Actor nominations.

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 Venice Film Festival. A24 will release “The Brutalist” in select theaters on Friday, December 20.
It might seem too easy to observe that Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” — a 215-minute slab of a film that spans 30 years in the life of Hungarian-Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor László Tóth (Adrien Brody), who flees to America in the hopes of building a better future — has been constructed to embody the aesthetics of its title character. Shot in VistaVision and projected on 300lbs.’ worth of 70mm film stock, Corbet’s epic draws a perfectly self-evident connection between the weight of its raw material and that of the concrete monolith Tóth creates over the course of the story, and the same could be said of its minimalistic framing, its bone-deep aversion to nostalgia, and, most of all, the movie’s efforts to reveal the soul...

A24 has unveiled the newest trailer for Brady Corbet’s critical darling, The Brutalist. The three-and-a-half-hour drama was shot on 70mm and it was made for under $10 million. It became a sensation at this year’s Venice Film Festival, garnering a 12-minute standing ovation and winning the Silver Lion, which goes to the film’s director. Now, we see more of the plot and the powerful performances by Adrian Brody and Guy Pearce. The Brutalist is a post-wwii epic that many critics are having a hard time finding the right films to compare it to.

"My buildings were devised to endure such erosion of the shoreline." A24 has revealed an amazing second trailer for the extraordinary film The Brutalist, the third feature film directed by acclaimed filmmaker / actor Brady Corbet. It premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival where it was instantly regarded as one of the best films of the year – a monumental masterpiece of American cinema about a brilliant architect who emerges from the Holocaust in WWII and resettles in America. I've been praising it sine Venice, too! When visionary architect László Toth and his wife Erzsébet flee post-war Europe in 1947 to rebuild their legacy and witness the birth of modern America, their lives are changed forever by a mysterious and extremely wealthy benefactor - a man named Harrison Lee Van Buren Sr. Made by director Brady Corbet, co-written by Brady Corbet & Mona Fastvold, the film stars Adrien Brody as László, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce,...

With the release of “The Brutalist” just one week away, A24 debuted a lengthy new trailer for the awards contender on the back of its strong showing at the Golden Globe Awards.
The film directed and co-written by Brady Corbert and starring Adrien Brody has widely been considered one of the year’s top competitors in the Oscars race since its debut at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year. So far, any early bets on the film have paid off handsomely: “The Brutalist” won Best Film at the New York Film Critics Circle last week and placed as the runner-up choice with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
