"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." was a changed show in its second season. In its early days, the Marvel Television series suffered from an identity crisis. Season 1 started out trying to emulate co-creator Joss Whedon's previous work, yet it played as a pale imitation of shows like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and especially "Firefly," following a ragtag team of misfits on weekly adventures in their flying home base. However, the one-two combo punch of Whedon stepping away from the series and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" blowing up the Marvel Cinematic Universe's status quo near the end of season 1 proved to be just the creative boost the show needed.
Upon returning for season 2, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." had gained a newfound confidence. Its characters began to take on greater dimensions, it really embraced the idea of being a show about everyday people trying to keep the world safe, and it even started...

A new take on the Arthurian legend is coming. MGM+ has ordered the 10-episode The Winter King, described as a “bold and revisionist take on well-loved Arthurian legends.” Based on Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles series and filmed in the United Kingdom, it will premiere on Sunday, August 20 at 9/8c. The Winter King is set in the fifth century, long before Britain was united, in a brutal land of warring factions and tribes, where lives were often fleeting. The series stars Iain De Caestecker as Arthur Pendragon as he evolves from outcast to legendary warrior and leader. “The Winter King is a cinematic and imaginative reinterpretation of the Arthurian legend,” said Michael Wright, head of MGM+, in a statement. “Kate Brooke, Ed Whitmore, and the magnificent cast take viewers on a fascinating and entertaining journey through this timeless tale told through a new lens.” Added executive producer Julie Gardner, “It...

If you’re eagerly awaiting the release of Seven Kings Must Die – the final feature-length instalment of The Last Kingdom, airing on Netflix this April – you might be wondering what will fill the epic battle-filled hole in your TV viewing schedule once it’s all over.
Good news: the answer could be Bad Wolf’s new show The Winter King, which will air on Itvx. This brand-new historical fiction TV series has more than just the Middle Ages setting in common with The Last Kingdom: they’re also both based on a series of Bernard Cornwell novels. This time, however, instead of Saxons vs. Vikings, The Winter King will tell the story of the legend of King Arthur:
“Once upon a time, in a land that was called Britain, these things happened.”
Introducing… The Winter King.

It's pretty incredible how "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," a television spin-off of the central agency who brought the Avengers together, evolved beyond its constraints, and became one of the most interesting success stories of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When it first started airing, a swath of people were ready for it to get the axe after the first season, only for it to last for over 130 episodes across seven seasons.
One of the largest reasons why "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." defied the odds was because of its tremendous ensemble. Clark Gregg, Chloe Bennet, Ming-Na Wen, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker, Brett Dalton, Henry Simmons, and Natalia Córdova-Buckley were all instrumental in making this off-branch of the Marvel universe worth following beyond waiting for an "Iron Man" cameo.

Before Disney+ and Kevin Feige brought television series into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D" was a fan-favorite network television underdog. Born out of 2012's "The Avengers," the show followed a team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents assembled by a newly not-dead Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg). Thanks to a strong fanbase, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." survived cancellation multiple times with rallying cries on social media like #CoulsonLives and #SaveAgentsOfSHIELD.
"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." had a rough start, but then "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" hit theaters, revealing the McU's biggest twist thus far. Since S.H.I.E.L.D.'s inception, Hydra had moles on the inside. The show's story exploded from there, exploring how these street-level agents grapple with the aftermath. What started as a seemingly typical network "villain of the week" formula became a great companion piece to the movies. As the seasons progressed, the...

Warning: contains spoilers for The Control Room finale.
The two leads in Scottish BBC One Thriller The Control Room share “an unbreakable bond” says star Iain de Caestecker, who plays emergency call handler Gabriel. The early loss of the characters’ mothers forged an unspoken connection between them that survived into the present day. Gabe lost his mum from cancer as a child, while Joanna Vanderham’s Sam was abandoned by hers at a similar age. The two children were then separated for decades but “when Sam comes back into Gabe’s world, it’s like electricity shot through him,” de Caestecker tells Den of Geek. “Suddenly he’s brought back to life in a sense.”
Let’s break down the final moments of The Control Room, a twist-packed thriller about a man who needs just that jolt of electricity to stop hiding from life and start living.

Emergency call handling is one of the highest-stress jobs that take place in an office environment. Handlers need to keep their head as they extract information from panicked and injured callers, who are often in dangerous situations. There can be highs, like the first call taken by Iain de Caestecker’s lead in BBC One thriller The Control Room – over the phone, Gabe talks a scared couple through the emergency roadside delivery of their child and they name the baby after him, their own angel Gabriel. The lows of the job are intense, particularly for Gabe who one day receives a call that unravels his life.

It happens day in day out, the call handler is just a voice but they’re talking to somebody at a critical moment. It’s a stressful job, the one at the centre of the new BBC One drama, The Control Room.
A tense thriller full of twists and turns, it’s about Gabe (Ian Caestecker), an emergency response handler whose life is turned upside down by a life and death 999 call. The voice on the other end of the phone is alarmingly familiar and the woman concerned (Joanna Vanderham) appears to know him as well. Sometimes, it’s possible for a TV series’ greatest strength to also be the source of its greatest shortcoming. It’s a paradox not readily apparent in “Us,” based on David Nicholls’ book of the same name and the latest presentation of PBS’ long-running “Masterpiece.” At the outset, the show offers up a surprisingly blunt telling of a familiar story. Over the course of a morning, Connie (Saskia Reeves) informs her husband Douglas (Tom Hollander) that she’s decided to leave him.
In the face of this monumental shift in their family, Douglas ultimately pushes for the two of them and their son Albie (Tom Taylor) to follow through on their plans for a grand European holiday, winding through cities in the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain, among other tourist-friendly stops. These overnight stays bounce back and forth between the grating (Douglas always worried about missing a reservation for a spot...

We’ve been conditioned — mostly thanks to corruption, greed and a steady abuse of power — to mistrust politicians. For many, skepticism is such a deep-rooted emotion when it comes to the government, even being too trustworthy becomes suspicious. But you need not worry, that isn’t that case for Hugh Laurie’s Peter Laurence, the center of PBS Masterpiece’s saucy political miniseries “Roadkill.” Go ahead and bank on those instincts. What begins as a straightforward story unravels into an interconnected evening soap, better paired with gin than tea and crumpets.
When introduced, well-known political figure Laurence has just won a libel lawsuit. A smug grin from ear to ear, he’s off to discuss it with Mick the Mouth on “Alltalk,” a trashy radio show on which he appears weekly. It seems par for the course these days that a once guarded political figure could go off the rails...

PBS released the first trailer on Saturday for the new Masterpiece series “Roadkill,” starring Hugh Laurie as a scheming U.K. politician.
The four-episode series, set to premiere on Nov. 1, stars Laurie as Peter Laurence, a “self-made forceful and charismatic politician,” according to PBS’s description of the series.
“Peter’s public and private life seems to be falling apart – or rather is being picked apart by his enemies. As the personal revelations spiral, he is shamelessly untroubled by guilt or remorse, expertly walking a high wire between glory and catastrophe as he seeks to further his own agenda while others plot to bring him down.”
Created by Michael Keillor and written by “The Hours” writer David Hare, the series also stars “Peaky Blinders” alum Helen McCrory as well as Saskia Reeves, Iain De Caestecker, Pip Torrens, Millie Brady, Danny Ashok and Sidse Babett Knudsen.

With the the success of HBO's Watchmen at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards, it seems apparent that superhero shows Can win awards.
For the longest time, the Academy has refused to recognize shows of the superhero genre, no matter how outstanding and critically relevant they are.
Yes, from time to time, a superhero show will receive an award for its stunts, costumes, or special effects, but rarely do we see an acting, writing, or directing award nomination for any of these shows, even when there are people deserving of the accolades.
Every year, the Emmys announce their nominations and the average person says "huh?"
While many of the nominated shows are worthy of recognition for their work, a majority of them are series that do not have a big following.
This is thanks to the ever-growing number of streaming services and the Academy's recent tendency to lean towards cable instead of network television.
