The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.
“Beef” tied with “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” for the most nominations among all non-regular series programs with 13. It’s presently in the lead among Gold Derby voters in the limited series race with 16/5 combined odds. Its star Ali Wong is also in first place among limited lead actresses,...

One of Orson Welles’ best has arrived in 4K! Kino Lorber has revived Universal’s 3-version study of the bordertown crime & corruption drama, that knocks us out with Welles’ colorful, weird characters, intricate scene blocking and infinitely creative camera work. Almost all of the extras from the earlier DVD and Blu-ray editions are here, with added expert commentary (the tally of tracks is now five). The performances are superb — Welles won’t lay off the candy bars, Janet Leigh wisely avoids the motel shower and Charlton Heston is actually fine as a ‘pretty unlikely’ Mexican. We’ve seen this show ten times — it’s so dense that each viewing brings new revelations.

“Two smoldering women made all the danger worthwhile!”… heck, we didn’t even see ’em catch fire. John Wayne is charismatic and Andrew V. McLaglen’s direction is decent for once in this formulaic ‘easy listening’ pot-boiler from the Wayne school of laid-back ’60s entertainment. After winning the Vietnam War, our intrepid action man extinguishes 101 out-of-control oil fires, which appear to happen every twenty minutes. When nothing’s burning, there are plenty of domestic tangles to straighten out with the womenfolk. In support are Katharine Ross, Jim Hutton, Vera Miles, Bruce Cabot and Jay C. Flippen. It’s old-fashioned but not embarrassing — Wayne still has his charm.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Valentin De Vargas—an actor of Spanish and Austrian descent who appeared in movies and on TV for more than 55 years, and “was active in Nosotros, the organization founded by Ricardo Montalban to support Latinos in show business”—died in June at the age 78. The article says that his family “wanted to wait until his burial to announce his death.” De Vargas made his movie debut as a member of a gang of teenage hoodlums in Richard Brooks’ then-controversial juvenile delinquency drama Blackboard Jungle (1955). It was an uncredited role and one without ...

Valentin de Vargas (above left), a noted character actor who appeared as a menacing thug in Orson Welles's "Touch of Evil" and was probably best known for his performance in Howard Hawks's John Wayne-led adventure movie "Hatari!," died on June 10 of myelodysplastic syndrome in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His daughter, Vanessa de Vargas, told The Hollywood Reporter that the family wanted to wait until his burial to announce his death.
Over his 50-year career, which spanned roles on both television and in movies, de Vargas made a name for himself as an accomplished and memorable character actor. You might not ever have known his name, but you have definitely seen his face.
De Vargas's first movie was "Blackboard Jungle," alongside Sidney Poitier. While he didn't have any dialogue, he was in almost every sequence where they showed the class. He also appeared in movies as diverse as "To Live and Die in L.A....
