Children: sons Ray, Patchen and Daniel; daughters Natasha and Michele.

Was one of the "Chicago Seven" defendants (along with Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Rennie Davis, Lee Weiner, Tom Hayden, and Bobby Seale) after the riots at the 1968 Democratic Party convention.

Was arrested and jailed countless times for protests and demonstrations against the Vietnam War. Was a stalwart in non-violent protest beside the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Daniel Berrigan, Daniel Ellsberg and other left-wing leaders. Was an activist for nuclear disarmament, prison reform, civil liberties and anti-colonialism.

Attended Yale University, Oxford and Union Theological Seminary.
