Fans of ABC’s Abbott Elementary were thrilled to hear that a season 4 episode will feature a crossover event. Social media users immediately put on their thinking caps and speculated as to who would be making an appearance in the halls of the downtrodden Philadelphia grade school. Knowing the show is aired on a network owned by Disney, you can expect it to be someone in the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (here’s hoping Carmy or Syd from The Bear travel to Philly *fingers crossed*)
The TV crossover used to be a great way for networks to promote two shows at the same time, but as the streaming era took over the tendency to apply this advertising method has dwindled. We thought it would be a great time to look back on the TV crossovers that only small screen purists will remember. Some of these crossovers are old enough that even...

According to reports, Chernin Entertainment and King Features are developing a new ‘patriotic’, live-action “Popeye the Sailor” feature, to be scripted by Michael Caleo (“The Sopranos”):
"...created by cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar, ‘Popeye’ debuted in the 1929 comic strip “Thimble Theater”.
“The comic was then turned into a series of theatrical cartoon shorts by Fleischer Studios for Paramount Pictures…
“…and featured in comic books, video games, advertisements and a whole lot more.
“Robert Altman directed a live-action ‘Popeye’ movie in 1980. Produced by Robert Evans for Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions, it starred Robin Willams as Popeye, Shelley Duvall as ‘Olive Oyl’, Paul L. Smith as ‘Bluto’, Paul Dooley as ‘J. Wellington Wimpy’, Richard Libertini as ‘George W. Geezil’ and Ray Walston as ‘Poopfeck Pappy’…”

Legendary comic book and cartoon character Popeye the Sailor is once again coming to the big screen, as Chernin Entertainment and King Features officially confirm that a big-budged live-action adaptation is in the works. This will be the first time that the character has been revisited in a live-action format since the late Robin Williams played Popeye in the 1980 movie. This has been confirmed exclusively by Variety, as the magazine reported on the movie being in the works.
As stated, Chernin Entertainment and King Features are working on the movie and will probably be in charge of its production and distribution, securing a worldwide theatrical distribution. So far, there aren’t many details available, but the movie is supposedly going to be a big-budget feature with Michael Caleo attached as the screenwriter as of the time of writing. Nick Offerman has been a bit of an Emmys bridesmaid so far, as the versatile actor has been nominated three times in his career but failed to turn any of them into cold, hard wins he can put on his shelf. This year, he earned his fourth nomination — and, surprisingly, his first one as an actor. He was nominated for Best Drama Guest Actor for HBO’s hugely successful video-game adaptation “The Last of Us.”
In the show, Offerman appears as Bill in episode three — “Long, Long Time.” Perhaps the most emotional episode of the entire series, Offerman is front and center of the drama and truly gets a chance to show off his acting chops. Bill lives a solitary life on his compound when the epidemic breaks out. But his uneasy quiet is disturbed when Murray Bartlett‘s Frank stumbles upon the land. Bill is reluctant to help the...

Murray Bartlett is having a very special moment. After winning his first Emmy last year, the actor has followed up that victory with not one but two nominations this year as he looks to continue his hot streak. One of those bids this year is for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for “Welcome to Chippendales,” while his second comes for HBO’s drama “The Last of Us,” which amassed a whopping 25 Emmy bids. Specifically, Bartlett was nominated for Best Drama Guest Actor for his emotional role as Frank in episode three of the show.
That episode, titled “Long, Long Time,” was touted as one of the very best in the entire series and was certainly the most heartbreaking. The episode flashes back to Frank leaving Baltimore as the epidemic spread. Soon after, he stumbles across a protected compound belonging to Nick Offerman‘s Bill, who, at first, is reluctant...

Steven Soderbergh had a hand in Christopher Nolan landing the director’s chair for the 2002 thriller Insomnia. The Command Z director recently recalled that he reached out to Warner Bros. bosses to suggest they take a meeting with Nolan.
“What happened was, I got a call from Chris’ agent, Dan Aloni, who I had known because he screened Memento for me after Memento couldn’t find a distributor after being on the festival circuit for a year,” Soderbergh said in an interview with Rolling Stone. “Dan calls me up out of the blue and says, ‘Could you watch this movie? I have this client of mine who has this movie, and we think it’s really good, but nobody will pick it up and we don’t understand why. Maybe we’re all crazy.'”

Mad About You might have sharply focused on the relationship between Paul and Jamie Buchman, but those closest to the couple were integral to the show’s success. Paul and Jamie’s friends and family made regular appearances. Those appearances wove a rich tapestry of interconnected storylines that made the show special. Jamie’s best friend and former boss, Fran Devanow, portrayed by Leila Kenzle, was an important fixture in the original series. Jamie’s sister, Lisa Stemple, and Paul’s cousin, Ira Buchman, were equally important. Lis and Ira both returned for the 2019 reboot. Fran, however, was nowhere to be found. There was a good reason for that. Leila Kenzle retired from acting after Mad About You.

Emily Marshall, who parlayed a gig as a secretary for producer Fred de Cordova on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show into a two-decade career as a sitcom writer on Newhart, Rhoda, Wkrp in Cincinnati and Designing Women, has died. She was 79.
Marshall died March 17 of lung cancer at her home in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, her friend and mentor, Emmy-nominated writer-producer Barry Kemp, said. She served as a staff writer on Newhart, which he created, from 1982-84.
Marshall was the third wife of Doc Severinsen. She married the colorful Tonight Show bandleader and trumpet player in 1980 and was with him for nearly 40 years through 2013.
Marshall also created the 1988-89 CBS sitcom Coming of Age, which starred Paul Dooley, Phyllis Newman, Alan Young, Glynis Johns, Kevin Pollak and Ruta Lee. The comedy, set in an Arizona retirement community, opened with Severinsen performing the boisterous big band number “Sing, Sing,...

Locked and loaded with a decent screenplay, Michael Winner and Charles Bronson acquit themselves well in this brutal 1974 hit that launched a decade’s worth of nasty vigilante movies. The lynch-mob formula presents crimes so awful that the audience demands violent retribution. The shock is that this incitement to ‘fight back’ is not direct right-wing propaganda — vigilantism is glamorized but not endorsed. A fine supporting cast includes Vincent Gardenia, Steven Keats and unexpected treats like Olympia Dukakis and Jeff Goldblum. “Fill your hand!”

Lloyd Morrisett, the co-founder of Sesame Street whose curiosity about whether television could serve as a tool to teach children was piqued when he observed his young daughter staring at a TV test pattern, has died. He was 93.
Morrisett’s death was reported by Sesame Workshop. No details of his death were immediately available.
Morrisett, then an experimental educator for the nonprofit Carnegie Corp. of New York, and Joan Ganz Cooney, a producer for a New York public TV station, were the driving forces behind the Children’s Television Workshop, which began in March 1968.
Out of that, Sesame Street debuted on Nov. 10, 1969, reaching more than half of the nation’s 12 million 3- to 5-year-olds in its first season.

John Hughes' "Sixteen Candles" is a beloved teen classic that follows a young girl (Hughes' muse Molly Ringwald) whose sweet sixteen turns sour when her entirely family forgets her birthday during preparations for her sister's wedding. While being relentlessly pursued by a randy geek (Anthony Michael Hall), Samantha pines for the dreamy senior Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling). "Sixteen Candles" has some problematic elements, such as the character of Long Duk Dong (Gedde Watanabe) and a scene that makes light of date rape; Molly Ringwald even revisited the film through a post-#MeToo lens in an essay for The New Yorker. Despite that, though, the...

The Christopher Guest “Ensemble” was on a roll after the success of the wonderful Best in Show (2000), which in turn was the follow-up to the brilliant Waiting for Guffman (1996). I informally call it the “Ensemble” because actor/writer/director Guest tends to make ensemble pictures featuring a stock company of ridiculously talented comic actors. Not all the actors appear in each Christopher Guest movie, but familiar faces are in every title.
It all began, really, with This is Spinal Tap (1984), which Guest did not direct (Rob Reiner did), but Guest and his partners in comedy, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, were likely the driving forces behind this “mockumentary” about a fictional rock band. The mockumentary genre, of course, is a comedy that is presented as if it’s a documentary. Spinal Tap was a...

John Hughes’ breakthrough writing-directing hit still carries a glow that defuses its rougher edges, making it one of the best of ’80s Teen comedies. Even the savvy Soraya Roberts cuts it some slack, thanks to the authentic presence and fine performance of Molly Ringwald. Hughes’ amusing script comes up with at least ten moments that would have made Preston Sturges laugh, and his perfect casting for personalities young and old makes his direction look inspired. With great turns by Anthony Michael Hall, Haviland Morris, Debbie Pollack, Gedde Watanabe, Paul Dooley, and Michael Schoeffling.

Brian Oliver’s New Republic Pictures, the company that co-financed and produced “Rocketman,” is developing a female ensemble comedy “Inward Bound.”
The announcement comes on the heels of Universal’s “Good Boys” becoming the first R-rated comedy to open in first place at the North American box office in three years, as well as the biggest opening for an original comedy this year.
“There is a large theatrical market for ensemble comedies, especially one as funny and, yes, as raunchy as ‘Inward Bound,'” Oliver said. “It’s got a great set of roles for talent and we’re eager to see this on the big screen.”
Written by stand-up comedian Stefanie Kahn, the “Inward Bound” script follows a divorced mother’s trip to a “romance rehab” staffed by hunky guides to service more than the women’s camping needs. Brought into New Republic Pictures by head of development John Hilary Shepherd,...

This article marks Part 2 of the 21-part Gold Derby series analyzing Meryl Streep at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at Meryl Streep’s nominations, the performances that competed with her, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.
In 1978, Meryl Streep, already renowned for her work on the New York stage, grabbed the attention of moviegoers across the country with her Oscar-nominated turn in the Best Picture champ “The Deer Hunter.” That year, however, would seem minor in comparison to what was on the horizon in 1979.
Streep was about to work with three of the decade’s hottest directors – Woody Allen, at his most in-demand after “Annie Hall” (1977) and “Interiors” (1978); Robert Benton, whose “The Late Show” (1977) was a big hit; and Jerry Schatzberg, who won critical acclaim with “The Panic in Needle Park” (1971) and “Scarecrow” (1973).

Writers are warned never to give away the ending of a movie or play. But beginnings are fair game. This is how Paul Dooley opens his one-man show, Movie Dad: ‘I am a character actor. That's the definition of me. For the past 60 years, I've been pretending to be other people. Tonight, I'm going to pretend to be myself. The character actor is never the star of the movie or the TV show. The audience may feel his face is familiar, but have no idea what his name is. Some of…...

"One new turn. One more dream. One last chance." Disney-Pixar has released one more full-length trailer for Pixar's sequel Cars 3, making this the fifth official trailer for this animated movie. They're really hoping it will be a hit? We know the story is about Lightning McQueen dealing with being beaten by younger, more high tech racers. He tries to make a comeback and pushes himself to the limit - even more than the last two times. Owen Wilson returns as McQueen, with a fun cast including Armie Hammer as Jackson Storm, Bonnie Hunt, Tony Shalhoub, Katherine Helmond, and Paul Dooley. As I keep saying, this might turn out better than expected, and hopefully it's not being ignored because it's another Cars movie. Maybe it's actually good? I'm very curious to see this and find out. No more trailers please, let's go watch the movie. Here's the fifth and final...

"You have no idea what a pleasure it is to finally beat you... Enjoy your retirement." DIsney-Pixar has released another new full-length trailer for Pixar's sequel Cars 3. From all the other trailers we've already seen, we know the story is about Lightning McQueen dealing with being beaten by younger, more high tech racers. This trailer features more footage of rival racer Jackson Storm (voiced by Armie Hammer) and some of the goofy antics (including a Vr scene) that Lightning gets into trying to get back to being the best. Owen Wilson returns as McQueen, with a fun voice cast including Armie Hammer, Bonnie Hunt, Tony Shalhoub, Katherine Helmond, and Paul Dooley. This actually looks better than expected, but perhaps that's because I don't hate this franchise as much as some other film fans do. Rev things up below. Here's the fourth official trailer (+ new poster) for Pixar's Cars 3,...

"I'm sorry. Your racing days are coming to an end..." Disney & Pixar have unveiled the new official trailer for Cars 3, the next sequel from Pixar (before we get an original music from the animation company later this year). Pixar's Cars 3 continues the story following racecar Lightning McQueen, who is now being beaten by younger, more high tech racers. Like any good "old guy" sports movie, he has to go back and work from the ground up again, including spending some time in a Monster Truck arena. Owen Wilson returns as McQueen, with a fun voice cast including Armie Hammer, Bonnie Hunt, Tony Shalhoub, Katherine Helmond, and Paul Dooley. I know everyone loves to hate these movies, but there's actually a charming side to them. This looks like it may actually be worth seeing. Pixar movies are always better than the trailers. It’s only when we hit our lowest point that we’re open to the greatest change. At least, that’s how the old saying goes, and it’s one that very much applies to Lightning McQueen’s journey in Cars 3, the animated threequel from Pixar and director Brian Fee that’s booked in for release on June 16th.
Hot off the unveiling of Nathan Fillion’s suave charmer, Sterling, the Pixar Brian Trust has today lifted the tarpaulin on the new (and potentially final) Cars 3 trailer in which we find Armie Hammer’s boisterous newcomer Jackson Storm cementing his place as the hottest stock car on the circuit. However, that blistering rise to fame comes at the expense of Owen Wilson’s Lightning McQueen, who finds his once ironclad legacy hanging in the balance.

"The next generation is coming. They're better, stronger..." Disney-Pixar have unveiled a new TV spot on Oscar Sunday for their upcoming sequel, Cars 3, which is actually looking better than expected. This trailer focuses on the "new generation" of high-tech racers that take out Lightning, though as learned previously, he makes a comeback. The other recent trailer for Cars 3 shows more of the story in the film, but this trailer is still a good setup. It gets especially gnarly during Lightning's crash scene, once again. The Rick Moranis-headlined version of Little Shop Of Horrors is 30 years old this month. But why is it so special?
We should start at the end, seeing as it’s the thing people talk about the most when it comes to Little Shop Of Horrors. Casting directors have a strange distinction in the awards world: Their guild has an Academy branch, but it’s the only one without its own Oscar category. Imagine for a moment that they did. What are the best-cast films of 2016?
IndieWire asked 13 of the top casting directors to nominate films worthy of casting recognition this year. There were a few restrictions worth noting. Although casting directors often get early sneak peeks at films, many noted there are some films they still hadn’t seen. In particular, many are anxious to find out what legendary casting director Ellen Lewis has cooked up for Martin Scorsese’s “Silence.” The other restriction, which was imposed as responses came in: They couldn’t all write about “Moonlight.” (We’ll dig further into the casting of that film in another article.)

Chicago – After he reigned as the father in the classic 1979 film “Breaking Away,” actor Paul Dooley suddenly became everyone’s Dad – and by everyone that meant Molly Ringwald (“Sixteen Candles”), Julia Roberts (“Runaway Bride”) and Helen Hunt (“Mad About You”). He tells all in Part Two of a comprehensive interview.

He did stage work, stand-up comedy and the New York City version of The Second City. Chicago – If there ever was a quintessential “Dad” in movies of the last generation, it would have to be Paul Dooley. The comedian and character actor is best known for portraying the patriarch in “Breaking Away” (1979) and “Sixteen Candles” (1984), but was also in director’s Robert Altman’s ‘ensemble’ and has had a stellar career.
