The ultimate cringe comedy has ended as Curb Your Enthusiasm took its final bow.
After 15 seasons of watching Larry David’s fictional self make a complete and utter ass of himself again and again, it might seem like the end is near for the medium.
Rest assured, this brand of humor will not disappear quickly, and streaming on Peacock today is Hapless, a British comedy from creator Gary Sinyor about -- to harken back to David’s Seinfeld -- nothing.
First of all, you should probably know that I am not generally a sitcom gal. My comedy needs to be brusque and sarcastic, borderline rude, but not raunchy.
As you can imagine, cringe comedies make my heart sing.
These comedies often feature somewhat neurotic people who have failed to fully mature as they live life. As a single adult without children, this speaks to me. How do you mature without kids?...

At the end of each chapter of Hapless, Paul (Tim Downie) cracks open his laptop to scan the headlines of The Jewish Enquirer. Almost invariably, whatever piddling story he’s spent the past episode chasing has been outflanked by the likes of “Cloudy weather in Tel Aviv” (mind you, the show takes place in London) and buried among links to “exclusives” like “Twin brothers share bar mitzvah” and “Jewish Film Festival opens with Jewish-themed film.”
Even by the standards of “the fourth-largest Jewish publication in the U.K.,” these are nothing articles. But they’re right in line with the spirit of the series, an amusingly sour half-hour comedy about a petty man getting worked up over petty things, with petty results. Think of it as a British Curb Your Enthusiasm, if Larry David had been a total nobody forced to look for the “jangle” (Jewish angle) in every remotely...

British Airways (BA) has U-turned on its decision to remove a sitcom about the British Jewish community from its inflight entertainment package in the wake of the Israel-Hamas War.
Hapless, which revolves around an obsessive and gaffe-prone journalist for a fictional Jewish newspaper and was recently acquired by Peacock in the U.S., was initially due to screen on BA from late this year but after a content review it was removed.
After coming to the attention of director Gary Sinyor and others, BA has U-turned, stating that the series will run from early next year following the airline’s latest three-monthly content review.
“We understand that the decision to review the content has caused upset and hurt to the Jewish community, and we’re sorry – that was never our intention,” said a spokesperson for BA. “We’re proud to offer a wide range of entertainment options for our customers...

“Based on a true story” has become one of the most overused (and misleading) labels of our time. Still, its application to “Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose” is duly warranted — and no less ridiculous for being so. The “true events” drawn on here remain dumbfounding: In the 1930s, a family living in a farmhouse on the Isle of Man claimed they played frequent host to an octogenarian mongoose from New Delhi whose mysterious powers were hardly limited to human speech. This tale attracted considerable interest from tabloids, tourists and investigators over several years’ course. Belief persisted despite all kinds of doubt-casting evidence, not least the daughter’s admitted talent for ventriloquism.
It’s the kind of wonderfully bizarre anecdote one imagines can hardly miss in screen depiction. Yet somehow it does just that in U.S. writer-director Adam Sigal’s U.K.-produced third feature, itself the sort of...

"This is an inexplicable farce!" Saban Films + Paramount have revealed an official trailer for an adventure thriller titled Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose, arriving in US theaters to watch starting this September. A (possibly?) true tale set in 1935 , Hungarian-American para-psychologist Nandor Fodor began his investigation of a strange occurrence on the Isle of Man. An average British family, the Irvings, claimed to have been contacted by a mysterious entity at their farm – a talking mongoose named Gef (pronounced "Jeff"). Huh, okay, this is peculiar... Simon Pegg stars as the titular Nandor Fodor, with a cast including Christopher Lloyd, Minnie Driver, Paul Kaye, Ruth Connell, Tim Downie, Gary Beadle, plus Edmund Kingsley as Houdini and Neil Gaiman as the voice of Gef. It seems like a clever parable about "faith" and religion, at least from what I can glean from this trailer. Are these people lying? Is there really a talking mongoose?...

Safe to say, the fifth season of Starz’s “Outlander” was dramatic on an epic scale and ended pretty violently. With nearly two years’ time since last season’s finale aired on May 10, 2020, there is a lot to catch up on before viewers reconnect with the Fraser family. In a recent trailer for Season 6, it’s clear Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) — plus the rest of their brood — will have plenty of drama on the horizon as the Revolutionary War looms.
For those who haven’t the time (or time-traveling gemstones) to rewatch the last season of “Outlander” before the Season 6 premiere on Sunday, read on for a summary of Season 5’s biggest developments.

Exclusive: My5, the streaming service run by ViacomCBS’s UK network Channel 5, has acquired British comedy series Hapless, which first started life as a self-released project on Amazon Prime Video.
The six-part series was created, written, and produced by Gary Sinyor and stars Outlander and Paddington actor Tim Downie as Paul Green, a journalist on the UK’s fourth most successful Jewish newspaper.
The series first launched on Amazon last year under the title The Jewish Enquirer, but with industry production slowing down during the coronavirus pandemic, Sinyor saw an opportunity to pitch the show to a broadcaster. It goes live on My5 in March
Hapless co-stars Geoffrey McGivern (Little Dorrit) and Lucy Montgomery (Tracey Ullman’s Show) as Green’s father and sister, while Josh Howie (Call Me Alvy) features as the journalist’s best friend. Sinyor himself provides the voice of Green’s narrow-minded editor.

Roger Mackenzie (Richard Rankin), and his treatment in the televised world of “Outlander” has been controversial among fans, but the show has been working for weeks now towards a huge emotional payoff that came to fruition with Sunday night’s “Famous Last Words.” By hitting viewers over the head just how important Roger’s voice is — both as a scholar in the 1960s and as a musician in the past — learning he lost that voice following his hanging at the Battle of Alamance was the worst thing next to death. Without the ability to fight or acclimatize to other masculine jobs of the time, Roger’s voice has been the one consistent in maintaining some kind of contribution to society. Without it, as the episode showed, he was lost.

“Outlander” has a history of breaking fans’ hearts, but in terms of emotional drama “The Ballad of Roger Mac” is right up there. The Fraser family took a brutal beating as the crown pushed through the Battle of Alamance, but tragedy isn’t done coming for this clan just yet. From a broken syringe and a major character’s death, to the fate of another lead being left in the air by the quiet, closing moments, there’s plenty of uncertainty and unrest throughout this week’s hour.
As history predicted, the Red Coats easily overtook the rebels with their superior cavalry, but after Bree (Sophie Skelton) rode out to warn her parents and Roger (Richard Rankin) that Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) and his men would inevitably fall, the family did their best to avoid war one more time. That meant Roger, who has struggled to find his place since deciding...

‘Outlander’ Review: Wedding Preparations and an Old Foe Lay the Groundwork for a Major Confrontation
Who knew that the fifth season of “Outlander” would feature so many weddings? While Jocasta (Maria Doyle Kennedy) and Duncan Innes (Alastair Findlay) didn’t actually tie the knot in “Better to Marry Than to Burn,” their wedding preparations anchored an action-packed episode full of reunions, plans, and well-earned second chances.
The installment kicked off with a flashback to Jocasta tragically losing her daughter, a scene that gave viewers new insight into her current disposition and further explains her choice to settle for Duncan despite her feelings for Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix). When the Regulator leader showed up at the end of the episode to declare his love and ask her to wait, it was a tense scene packed with emotional showcases for two characters that didn’t necessarily get to dig into those moments in the Diana Gabaldon novels. In the end Jocasta’s decision to go ahead and marry...

“Outlander” is always at its strongest when it explores the century-spanning love between Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe), and the forces that keep them apart or bring them together. So even though the characters weren’t physically together until the very end of “Perpetual Adoration,” their love grounded the episode through the flash-forward scenes that urged Claire across the pond, and ultimate back to her husband. Add in the (somewhat miraculous) advent of penicillin, some religious musings, and characters coming to terms with their pasts, and it was a full installment with lots to dig into.
It all kicked off with Claire’s eureka moment in which she effectively “invented” penicillin so that she could perform tonsillectomies on the twins, a storyline that was mirrored in the future when Claire unexpectedly lost her Scottish patient, Graham Menzies (Stephen McCole), to a penicillin allergy before a routine surgery. In...

Prior to the fifth season premiere of “Outlander,” executive producer Maril Davis spoke with Variety about the challenges of adapting “The Fiery Cross,” the Diana Gabaldon book on which the season is based, noting the slower pace of the storytelling and fewer moments of tentpole action. “It’s funny, of all the books, this is the one I had the hardest time reading more than once,” Davis said at the time. “Even [Diana], when I’ve talked to her about it, I think she feels the same way. I think for most people, ‘The Fiery Cross’ is a little different. Still amazing, but I think we did have a challenging time adapting this one.”

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “The Fiery Cross,” the Season 5 premiere of “Outlander,” streaming now on the Starz app.
In the Season 5 premiere, the “Outlander” writers had the monumental task of condensing the 200-page Scottish gathering from Diana Gabaldon’s novel “The Fiery Cross” into one episode of TV — and the episode still clocked in at more than 60 minutes. But the wedding of Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin) provided an enjoyable way to get all of the characters together for a celebration before the impending Revolutionary War tears them apart.
Before the nuptials, the episode opened with Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) telling a young Jamie that his mother, Ellen, was dead but that he would always be with Jamie — which was particularly poignant because viewers know that Murtagh and Jamie (Sam Heughan) are now on opposite sides of the Revolutionary War since Jamie...

The Doughtlander may be over, but with its end comes a wave of high viewer expectations thanks to certain literary deviations that have raised major questions for the show’s characters heading into Season 5. So what better way to kick it all off than with some flashbacks and a wedding?
“Outlander’s” Season 5 opener, “The Fiery Cross”, managed to delve further into Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Murtagh’s (Duncan Lacroix) past while also exploring Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger’s (Richard Rankin) evolving relationship, making good on the show’s earlier promise to place the family drama front and center this season.

When “Outlander” returns with Season 5 on Feb. 16, it does so with a special event — the wedding of Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin).
It is a formal event for their friends and family to attend, but both actors feel their characters have been married in spirit for awhile now.
“For Roger and Bree, they sort of had their wedding when they handfasted — that really felt like the wedding episode,” Skelton tells Variety. “So this one just feels like a bit more of a celebration as opposed to being about the promise to each other.
I feel like they’ve already made that. This is is more the lighthearted and fun aspect of it.”

The Droughtlander is almost over. “Outlander” returns in a month, but you can tide yourself over with the new Season 5 video and photo that Starz released Tuesday.
Season 4 ended with Jamie (Sam Heughan), Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Brianna (Sophie Skelton) reunited in Fraser’s Ridge, as are Brianna and Roger (Richard Rankin), while Jamie got one helluva an order from Gov. Tryon (Tim Downie): kill Murtagh Fitzgibbons (Duncan Lacroix). With the American Revolution looming, Season 5 will find the clan perhaps in more danger than ever and “fighting for their family and the home they have forged on Fraser’s Ridge,” per Starz.
“I feel it’s a very strong season and I think Jamie is in a really, really though position. He’s really trying to provide for everyone,” Heughan says in the behind-the-scenes video below. “Through that, he agrees to work for the British and he has to...

While we don't have to worry whether Outlander will be cancelled or renewed for season five,, we're left to wonder whether it can keep on growing, or if it has reached its peak. We're keeping an eye on the ratings during the fourth season, so stay tuned.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Wilmington,” the eighth episode of “Outlander” Season 4.
The latest “Outlander” episode picked up with both Roger (Richard Rankin) and Brianna (Sophie Skelton) finding themselves in Wilmington, N.C. Brianna’s entire sea voyage was skipped, but nothing terribly important happened during the voyage in the book, so it made sense to cut it on the show, as well.
The two star-crossed lovers managed to find each other in a pub and they reconciled, although, from Lizzie’s (Caitlin O’Ryan) perspective, they were still fighting — she couldn’t hear what they were saying and all she saw was that Roger kind of roughly pulled Brianna down the street and out of sight. This would prove to be important later.
For now, the duo found an empty building and immediately started ripping each other’s clothes off. Since Roger wanted...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Common Ground,” the fourth episode of “Outlander” Season 4.
When “Outlander” last left Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Hueghan), they decided to take Governor Tryon (Tim Downie) up on his offer to settle 10,000 acres of land in America in exchange for Jamie swearing an oath to the British crown. When Jamie signed the papers to make it official, the governor informed Jamie that he would need to be careful of which men he chooses as his tenants because Regulators (aka people rebelling against the Crown) were everywhere. Jamie talked a good game of seeming sympathetic to the Crown, but you could tell he didn’t care much for the British.
But all Jamie had to do was smile, nod and sign the papers and he, Claire and young Ian (John Bell) were off to Fraser’s Ridge. They left...

"We're always connected, no matter how far apart we are." Screen Media Films has debuted a new official Us trailer for the indie sailing drama The Mercy, which tells the story of a humble middle-aged man who takes an unfinished boat on a race around the world to add some adventure in his life. This already opened in Europe earlier this year, but is just getting a special theatrical Us release in November (and on December 6th). This film tells the triumphant, inspiring, incredible true story of Donald Crowhurst, an amateur sailor who decided to take on the task of competing in the 1968 Golden Globe Race - sailing around the world solo. Colin Firth stars as Donald Crowhurts, along with Rachel Weisz as his wife Clare, plus David Thewlis, Jonathan Bailey, Tim Downie, Andrew Buchan, Genevieve Gaunt, Adrian Schiller. It still looks like your standard sailing survival, look-how-crazy-it-is adventure movie.
