“Furiosa,” George Miller’s prequel to his Oscar-winning “Mad Max: Fury Road,” will have its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
Anya Taylor-Joy stars as the titular warrior in the epic saga that spans 15 years and charts the title character’s origin story. A young Furiosa is kidnapped from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth. As they trek across the Wasteland, the gang come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war over dominance, Furiosa faces many trials to find her way home. Oh yeah, and she’s definitely out to kill those who murdered her family.

Turns out, Anya Taylor-Joy has a shaved head in “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel “Furiosa.”
The “Queen’s Gambit” star recently told Empire magazine that director George Miller told her to not shave her head for the role; however, in the new trailer, a buzzed cut is boasted by the star, mirroring Charlize Theron’s look as Furiosa for “Fury Road.” Taylor-Joy is almost certainly sporting a wig in the film; we sure haven’t seen her growing back long locks in the time since.
“I feel very lucky that, from the second I read the script, I just knew this person. I felt so fiercely protective over Furiosa, and fiercely protective of her interests,” Taylor-Joy said of taking over the character from Theron. She also told IndieWire that “Furiosa” was the “dirtiest and the bloodiest” she’s ever been onscreen.

Warner Bros. has released the second trailer for George Miller’s “Furiosa”, the post-apocalyptic prequel to “Mad Max: Fury Road.” The film stars Anya-Taylor Joy as wasteland warrior princess Imperator Furiosa, a role originally plated by Charlize Theron in the 2015 series reboot.
The film follows a young Furiosa as she is ripped from her refuge in the Green Place of Many Mothers and, for the first time, forced to face the insanity of the desolate world beyond. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke star alongside Taylor-Joy.
The new trailer shows Taylor-Joy going full Furiosa by cutting her hair and wearing her robotic arm prosthetic. It begins with a flashback to an even younger Furiosa getting kidnapped by a gang of marauders on motorbikes. As a young adult, she then goes on a revenge rampage against Hemsworth’s unnamed ringleader. Just like “Fury Road,” there is plenty of car carnage and wasteland weirdos teased in the trailer.

The first official trailer for Warner Bros. Pictures’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga confirms two important details. One, Anya Taylor-Joy looks totally badass as the titular character. And two, the long wait between Mad Max films has been worth it.
The two-and-a-half minute trailer’s loaded with gritty action, and Oscar-winning filmmaker George Miller’s epic action thriller captures its predecessor’s vibe.
In addition to Emmy nominee Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit), the Fury Road prequel stars Chris Hemsworth, Alyla Browne, and Tom Burke. Miller co-wrote the screenplay with Mad Max: Fury Road‘s Nico Lathouris.
Miller reunites with production designer Colin Gibson, editor Margaret Sixel, sound mixer Ben Osmo, costume designer Jenny Beavan, and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt for Furiosa. His behind-the-scenes team also includes first assistant director Pj Voeten, second unit director, stunt coordinator Guy Norris, director of photography Simon Duggan, composer Tom Holkenborg, sound designer Robert Mackenzie,...

Furiosa is getting a character study after all.
Following Charlize Theron’s rough and tumble take on the “Mad Max: Fury Road” warrior, assistant director and producer P. J. Voeten noted that the eponymous prequel film “Furiosa” will embrace more traditional storytelling. The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy in the titular role and is set to be released in theaters in 2024. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke co-star alongside Taylor-Joy.
“‘Furiosa’ is more of a traditional three-act drama. If people are expecting to see another chase movie, it’s not going to be that,” Voeten said, as reported by The New York Times writer Kyle Buchanan in his new book, “Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road.'”

Natalie (Rebel Wilson), an Aussie architect working in Manhattan, hates rom-coms. She’s allergic to all the clichés of the genre, and ever since she was a child, her mom (Jennifer Saunders) has taught her that Hollywood fantasies with Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, etc. are “not for girls like us.” Working in New York does nothing to disabuse Natalie of the notion. She’s “extra-invisible” to her company’s handsome client, Blake (Liam Hemsworth), who Natalie describes as “CW hot.” He rudely treats her as a lowly assistant and barks orders for coffee.

From New Line Cinema comes the romantic comedy Isn’T It Romantic, starring Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth (the “Hunger Games” films), Adam Devine and Priyanka Chopra, under the direction of Todd Strauss-Schulson.
New York City architect Natalie works hard to get noticed at her job but is more likely to be asked to deliver coffee and bagels than to design the city’s next skyscraper. And if things weren’t bad enough, Natalie, a lifelong cynic when it comes to love, has an encounter with a mugger that renders her unconscious, waking to discover that her life has suddenly become her worst nightmare—a romantic comedy—and she is the leading lady.
Wilson stars as Natalie, alongside Hemsworth as Blake, a handsome client; Devine as her co-worker and earnest best friend, Josh; and Chopra as Isabella, a model and self-proclaimed yoga ambassador.
Strauss-Schulson directed from a screenplay by Erin Cardillo and Dana Fox & Katie Silberman,...

The ‘Deadwood’ creator comes aboard a potential third season.
It’s been a long, strange trip to be sure, and we’re not exactly there yet, but it would seem that the dark spot of gritty storytelling on the horizon could just be the long-awaited and thought-ill-fated third season of the HBO series True Detective.
Following abysmal second season ratings and response, Nic Pizzolatto’s crime-centric character study seemed destined for the televisual graveyard. Since season two bowed, there’s been no word either way as to the fate of True Detective, it’s just been sitting there in our cultural cloud, suspended in network ether. Most folks, myself included, have considered the show dead for at least a year of its two-year hiatus; Pizzolatto signing an additional development deal with HBO in 2016 seemed to be the final nail in the coffin, but then out of pretty much nowhere EW today dropped a pair of exclusive bombshells...

Like all films that Mel Gibson has directed, “Hacksaw Ridge” contains amazing heroics and spiritual transcendence. And, like other Gibson films, it’s violent. The person responsible for capturing that mayhem was Australian cinematographer Simon Duggan (“The Great Gatsby,” “I, Robot”).
With Sydney, Australia doubling for West Virginia as well as Okinawa, he used the Alexa with Panavision Primo Anamorphic Prime lenses, and the Red for hand-held shots.
“Everything was quite contained, including the battlefield, and we tried to simplify down how much we saw and really focused on the performances and stayed really tight to the storytelling,” Duggan said.
To help create that intensity, the second unit placed Black Magic pocket cameras among stunt guys when running through bombs, which allowed for the creation of dramatic cutaways.
While action was a key storytelling element, “Hacksaw Ridge” hinges on pacifism — and Gibson calls it a love story. It’s based...

Mel Gibson is back, directing the bloody hell out of a war movie about ... peace. You may have issues with the star's past history of anger and intolerance. But you'll have no issue with Hacksaw Ridge, a movie about a different kind of brave heart. It's the fact-based, World War II story of Private First Class Desmond T. Doss, the first conscientious objector to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. Andrew Garfield, in the best performance of his career to date, plays Desmond, a feisty kid out of Virginia's Blue...

Hacksaw Ridge cast and crew in Venice.
Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge, shot in Sydney last year, has debuted at the Venice Film Festival to (mostly) raves.
Gibson has "absolutely hit Hacksaw Ridge out of the park", said The Guardian in a four-star review. "As a machine-tooled vehicle for Mel Gibson's directorial comeback, Hacksaw Ridge couldn't be more perfect."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Gibson's forceful comeback is a violent drama about pacifism that succeeds in combining horror with grace", while The Telegraph called it "fantastically moving".
Variety described the film "an act of atonement that may succeed in bringing Gibson back" as well as "a testament to his filmmaking chops".
The pundits uniformly singled out the gruesomeness of the film's battle-heavy second half, as well as the skill with which Gibson presents it - "the battle scenes in Hacksaw Ridge make the opening scene in Saving Private Ryan...

A blood-soaked, bone-crunching hymn to religious devotion and faith, “Hacksaw Ridge” doesn’t hum Mel Gibson’s favorite themes; it shouts them. Coming 10 long and eventful years since his last directorial effort, Gibson returns with a film that is on the surface about a real-life World War II hero – Desmond Doss, the first conscientious objector to win the Medal of Honor – but is really about all the denigrated true believers who held their head high through the carnage and chaos and came out the other side a hero – be they named Wallace, or Jesus, or Mel.
As he’s proven with “Apocalypto” and “Braveheart,” Gibson has an incisive eye for action, knowing what to block, where to shoot, and when to get out of the way. He puts those skills to full use in the outrageous war scenes that make up the second half of “Hacksaw Ridge.” But you’ve...

Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation wins every film category but two at the annual Australian awards ceremony.
The big budget Us-financed jazz age extravaganza The Great Gatsby won every film category but two at the annual Aacta (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television) Awards this evening Australian time in Sydney.
This included the best film gong, which goes to Australian producers Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin and Catherine Knapman and their Us counterparts Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher.
Luhrmann also scored best director and, with his high school friend and regular collaborator Craig Pearce, best adapted screenplay.
The only award The Great Gatsby could have won but didn’t was for best actress: that instead went to Rose Byrne for her small part — all the actors had small roles overall — in the bold anthology film The Turning, adapted from a book of short stories by popular novelist Tim Winton.

‘Her’ movie tops 2013 San Diego Film Critics Awards (Joaquin Phoenix in ‘Her’) The San Diego Film Critics Society has released its list of 2013 nominees and winners. The nominations themselves were quite eclectic, ranging from Best Actress nominee Brie Larson for Short Term 12 to Best Film nominee Gravity. The list of winners, however, tended to be more mainstream. For instance, Warner Bros.’ Spike Jonze-directed Her, starring Joaquin Phoenix as a man who falls in love with a Scarlett Johansson-voiced computer, was chosen as the Best Film of 2013, in addition to receiving honors for Best Original Screenplay (also Spike Jonze) and Best Score (Arcade Fire). Alfonso Cuarón was the Best Director for another Warner Bros. release, Gravity, a 3D space action melodrama about an astronaut and bereaved Mom (Sandra Bullock) who learns that, no matter what, Life Is Worth Living. Here’s the second trailer (first here) for the sequel to the 2006 epic, 300. The sequel has the title 300: Rise of an Empire and carries on where we left off 7 years ago. The original movie has to be one of my favourites of the last decade and I can’t believe it’s taken such a long time for a second installment to come along. 300: Rise of an Empire stars Sullivan Stapleton as Themistokles, Eva Green as Artemisia. Lena Headey as the Spartan Queen, Gorgo; Hans Matheson as Aeskylos David Wenham as Dilios, and Rodrigo Santoro as the Persian King Xerxes. 300: Rise of an Empire and should be with us March 2014. The film is directed by Noam Murro with the screenplay by Zack Snyder & Kurt Johnstad.

Jason Bateman, Jennifer Lopez, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emmanuelle Riva, and Chris Tucker are among the actors who have been invited to join, the organization announced today.
Other interesting additions: the musician Prince, Girls and Tiny Furniture writer/director/actress Lena Dunham,...

The line where art meets commerce has always been a grey one . even when it is reliant on the public purse. The issue flared in 2011 when government proposals took aim at the regulations which limit foreign actors working on local productions. And it flared again last year when, for the first time, a number of local films employed foreign cinematographers.
The appointments created a ripple of unease among local cinematographers who are regularly lauded as being amongst the world.s best. Of the seven Australians who have won Academy Awards for their work behind the camera, five are still active in the industry: Dean Semler, John Seale, Andrew Lesnie, Russell Boyd and Dion Beebe. A new breed are also making the leap into high-end features such as Ross Emery (The Wolverine), Simon Duggan (The Great Gatsby) and Jules O.Loughlin (Sanctum), just to name a few.

The first reviews of Baz Luhrmann.s highly anticipated The Great Gatsby are in - and most aren.t singing praise for the director.s interpretation of the American classic..
The adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald.s 1925 novel will open the Cannes Film Festival on May 13, but Us critics who have seen advance screenings of the film have so far been largely underwhelmed..
Luhrmann comes under fire in particular for drowning the story in what Variety.s Scott Foundas describes as a .visual circus...
As The Wrap.s Alonso Duralde notes in his review, .The Great Gatsby is an immortal American tragedy, but the story's impact gets completely buried in Luhrmann's flash and dazzle..
Foundas similarly writes, .Together with cinematographer Simon Duggan, he [Luhrmann] unleashes every manipulation he can think of . sepia flashbacks, smash zooms, split screens, superimpositions, period newsreel footage, new footage degraded to resemble period newsreel footage . all of...

“I want to write something new, something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned.”
—F. Scott Fitzgerald
From the uniquely imaginative mind of writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann comes the new big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. In his adaptation, the filmmaker combines his distinctive visual, sonic, and storytelling styles in 3 Dimensions, weaving a Jazz Age cocktail faithful to Fitzgerald’s text and relevant to now. Leonardo DiCaprio stars in the title role.
In theaters on May 10th, “The Great Gatsby” follows would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan.

If you listen to the show, you know that I’m nervous about Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming effort, The Great Gatsby. I’m unconvinced that Leo can pull of Gatsby, if I’m being honest, but more importantly, Luhrmann’s bent toward dropping stories into the same formula doesn’t seem in line with the story.
At any rate, it seems like some things are being managed well enough, if we just look at the images. I’ll give them Carey Mulligan though, she could be a good fit.
Will you be in line for this one on opening day?
