Once Upon A One More Time, the revisionist fairy tale Broadway musical set to the hits of Britney Spears, continued its downward slide at the box office last week, with the latest figures suggesting the producers’ decision to close Sept. 3 was a smart one.
For the week ending Aug. 20, the musical filled just 45% of seats at the Marquis, grossing $442,404. Producers announced the early close yesterday, just a few months after the show began previews.
On a more upbeat note, El Mago Pop, the limited engagement solo show by European illusionist Antonio Diaz, began previews and opened last week to very solid numbers, filling 87% of seats at the Barrymore and taking in $624,826. The figures should bounce even more as the well-reviewed production nears its August 27 closing night.
Also having a fine week was Good Night, Oscar starring Sean Hayes, which had its best-yet week at...

Kvea and Kcet each won eight trophies at the 75th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards to lead the field just like they did at the nomination stage. Telemundo’s Kvea swept all three regularly scheduled newscast categories, morning, daytime and evening. CBS/KCAL9 followed with 4 wins, with ABC7 and Spectrum SportsNet LA tied at 3 and Kmex, Spectrum News 1 and Spectrum SportsNet at 2. The honored telecasts included two tributes to local icon Vin Scully who died last summer.
The ceremony was held Saturday night at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel whose workers have been on strike for a new contract. Videos of attendees crossing the picket line to enter the hotel were tweeted by Unite Here Local 11, which called out the TV Academy for holding the event at the struck location. Kvea is clearly doing something right. The Telemundo-owned Los Angeles station, part of a duopoly with sister NBC outlet Knbc, swept this year’s key newscast categories at the 75th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards. The Spanish language station dominated the evening, winning the Emmys for evening (7 p.m. to 12 a.m.), daytime (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and morning (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.) newscasts.
Kvea had won the daytime newscast Emmy last year as well.
Overall, Kvea earned eight L.A. Area Emmy awards this year, tied with local public broadcaster Kcet. (That was also up from Kcet’s haul of six last year.) Given the tie with Kvea, that still preserves Kcet’s streak of this being the seventh year in a row that Kcet won the most.
The Kcbs/Kcal duopoly was next in line, with four wins, while ABC-owned Kabc and cabler Spectrum SportsNet LA were next with three.

Public broadcaster Kcet — part of a PBS duopoly with Koce “PBS SoCal” — is back on top at the Los Angeles Area Emmys. Thanks to locally produced series like “Artbound” and “Broken Bread,” Kcet dominated the L.A. area Emmy nominations, announced Tuesday, with 24.
That’s a return to the top spot among nominees, and up from 15 last year. Cable news outlet Spectrum News 1, which dominated last year’s Emmy nominations, was down to 14 this year (vs. 23 in 2022) — still good enough for third place.
Meanwhile, Telemundo outlet Kvea (part of a duopoly with NBC-owned Knbc) saw a huge surge as well, with 20 nominations — up from just 8 last year. That meant Kvea was not only tops with Spanish outlets, but it was also tops with all commercial broadcasters. That includes its sibling NBC4, just posted just two nominations.
As usual, all stations that enter are immediately nominated in the daily morning newscast (4 a.

After taking a week's vacation from the airwaves, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is back — but unlike Agent Coulson, it returned from its absence exactly the same. This week's "Fzzt" was a perfectly generic episode of ABC's so-so superhero drama: well-produced, blandly watchable, and peppered with just enough flashes of brilliance to make it frustrating that the show isn't better. There are plenty of things that work just fine. There's a fairly successful bait-and-switch at the heart of "Fzzt." S.H.I.E.L.D. is called in after a couple of volunteer firemen turn up dead, their corpses inexplicably floating in midair. After a brief investigation, Coulson intuits that their friend Tony Diaz — who possesses a Chitauri helmet he scavenged from the alien attack in The Avengers — must have gone full supervillain and turned on his onetime allies. When Coulson confronts Diaz, he learns that the truth is a little more complicated.

Reinvention, innovation, and cultivation make Houston our City of the Year for 2011.
It's Past 11 P.M., And I'm walking with my husband in downtown Houston. We've just seen a play at the Alley Theatre, and the stroll to our car, which I'd left at my office, gives us time to dissect the show and enjoy the city at night.
Enjoy the city at night: I never would have thought of doing that in 1980, when I first came to Houston. Back then, downtown was not a place I'd wanted to walk after dark. That I can do it now is one sign of how Houston, America's fourth-largest city and a place I've lived in and around for most of my life, continues to reinvent itself.
We're a diverse city of 2.1 million residents, with A-list universities, top museums, and the world's largest and arguably best medical center. We have a vibrant business...
