Water for Elephants, an extravagant circus-meets-musical, premiered at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre. This production, a collaboration between Rick Elice, who wrote the book, and PigPen Theatre Co., which was responsible for the score, marks the impressive Broadway debut.
Adapted from Sara Gruen‘s novel, Water for Elephants follows the story of Jacob Jankowski (played by Gregg Edelman), a retired veterinarian drawn to the circus. As the crew dismantles the set, Jacob lingers, and quizzical workers discover that he found his purpose at the circus after he fled his final exams at Cornell.
Grant Gustin portrays the younger Jacob, who, amid the Great Depression, hops aboard a train with the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. The Benzinis faced financial ruin in 1929, and their new owner, August Rachinger (Paul Alexander Nolan), is yet to redefine the circus’s identity. Initially, August contemplates whether or not to throw Jacob off the train,...

Chicago – Like the recent movie-to-stage-musical adaptations, “The Producers” and “Young Frankenstein,” Chicago has become the proving ground before a Broadway premiere. The latest is almost a no-brainer, “The First Wives Club,” adapted from the 1996 film that starred Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton.
The big news is that the original song writing team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland (Holland-Dozier-Holland) have reunited to write new music for the show, adding to their familiar hits “Stop in the Name of Love,” and “Reach Out I’ll Be There.” 22 new songs have been added to “The First Wives Club” stage musical, representing the first new output in years from the famous songwriting trio.

There are two upcoming movie musicals that, for a long time, I've wanted to make into motion pictures, should someone with money be willing to give me the funds to make them -- Into The Woods and The Last 5 Years. I'm both nervous and excited to see how directors Rob Marshall and Richard Lagravenese, respectfully, have interpreted the material I hold so close to my heart. I am especially nervous for Into The Woods, given Marshall's less than impressive track record. If someone is going to screw up something I cherish, it should be me. Of course, there are far more than two musicals I have a deep connection to. Some have already been made into films, like Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Les Miserables, but there is a vast collection of musicals I have thought could make fantastic films, but have never been made.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood The Roundabout Theatre, NYC
I was a real fan of the 1985 Broadway production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood and have been eagerly looking forward to the Roundabout revival. For the most part, it did not disappoint.
Drood, of course, is based on Charles Dickens's final, unfinished novel.
To tell the story onstage, composer/author Rupert Holmes has devised an ingenious conceit. The show takes place in 1895 in a British music hall, called London's Music Hall Royale. The troupe is giving a performance of its new musical production based on the Dickens novel. It allows a delightful mix of a dark, Gothic, melodramatic story along with the boisterous comedy of the British music hall. The results are highly atmospheric and great fun. Since the Dickens novel was never finished, the ending of the show is determined by audience votes on several matters, another nifty idea from Holmes,...

Title: Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best Director: Ryan O’Nan Starring: Ryan O’Nan, Michael Weston, Arielle Kebbel, Andrew McCarthy, Christopher McDonald, Jason Ritter, Wilmer Valderrama, Kate Baldwin, Charles Chu, Gregg Edelman, Melissa Leo, Jake Miller An offbeat, hipster-inflected road movie that almost steadfastly refuses to conform to expectation and sense, multi-hyphenate Ryan O’Nan’s “Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best” is a to-scale victory of quirky charm and feeling over sagacity. A new Broadway season is about to begin and, with it, new life has been brought to my posts. After over 900 posts, 50 comments, over 325 Tony nominees and over 75 winners in the two-and-a-half years I blogged independently about the Tony Awards, I am proud to be joining the team at ScottFeinberg.com.
Without any further ado, I would like to begin with a look ahead at the Broadway shows that will be coming up this year. I have made this list as comprehensive as I could given what information is available but, as is often the case, there is much more data available right now about the fall season (September through the winter holidays) than the spring season (Christmas through the Tony Awards in June) on Broadway. I will update this post with more details as information becomes available.

Chicago – In Chicago’s continuing trend of borrowing from Broadway high-accolade actors rather than drawing upon the profusion of genius in our own backyard, at least now-Broadway star and New York local Gregg Edelman is a Chicago native. And the TV voice of the peanut M&M.
Play Rating: 4.0/5.0
Following Edelman’s previous 15 Broadway shows and four Tony Award nominations, now he’s confidently embodying the diabolical vigilante Sweeney Todd with precision, power and patience. While the 52-year-old Edelman was born in Chicago and attended Northwestern University, prior to this performance his only Chicago credit is just out of college from three decades ago: 1980’s “Evita”.

Little Children (2006) Direction: Todd Field Cast: Kate Winslet, Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Connelly, Jackie Earle Haley, Noah Emmerich, Phyllis Somerville, Gregg Edelman, Sadie Goldstein, Ty Simpkins Screenplay: Todd Field and Tom Perrotta; from Perrotta's novel Oscar Movies Recommended with Reservations Kate Winslet, Patrick Wilson, Little Children Synopsis: Suburbia, U.S.A.: A married man (Patrick Wilson) and a married woman (Kate Winslet) have an affair, while an unbalanced ex-cop (Noah Emmerich) continually harasses the local convicted sex offender (Jackie Earle Haley). [Note: Spoilers ahead.] The Pros: Little Children has an intriguing premise that feels like a cross between American Beauty and Peyton Place, with bits from Madame Bovary thrown in: Manicured American suburbs are merely a deceptively placid facade that hides a whole array of human passions, urges, neuroses, and perversions. Todd Field handles both the drama and the satire with a sure hand, and generally elicits solid performances from his cast. Kate Winslet...

Woody Allen's newest feature You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger opens today in movie theaters. It's currently confusing me with its Curse of The Jade Scorpion or The Purple Rose of Cairo -like silhouette poster. With this move the marketing department has made me recall both the worst and the best from Woody Allen's filmography simultaneously. It's very schizo... maybe this means the new feature will be right smack dab in the middle, neither essential nor embarrassing?
American Poster (left), a European treatment (right)
Why couldn't they have gone with the European poster treatment? European posters are always better. It's a law of Hollywood's nature.
To celebrate its release -- I haven't had time to see it yet -- I wanted to revamp an old list I started years ago. When Vicky Cristina Barcelona was cast in 2007, numerous media outlets were making ridiculously inaccurate claims about Scarlett Johansson...
