For me the year of 2024 was a challenging one. Between being in hospital or housebound at home, I could not attend any press shows or even visit my local cinemas. However, I have tried to catch up with some of the more important films of the year. I have missed many I would like to have seen, but time marches on and I have made the best of a bad situation. If it was a tough year for me, it also seems to have brought many films dealing with various difficulties to our cinema screens.
Take, for instance, Edward Berger’s Conclave. What could be more challenging than the selection of a new Pope? Ralph Fiennes in this role is torn between tradition and scandals concerning the possible candidates. Then there was Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, where a Mexican cartel leader is forced to disappear...

Even Margaret Qualley can’t get the haunting visuals of “The Substance” out of her mind.
The actress told IndieWire that more than two years after wrapping production on Coralie Fargeat’s Golden Globes-winning satirical horror film, she still has “nightmares” about a certain gory scene — and it’s not that bloody ending. Instead, the sequence in which Sue (Qualley) starts to fall apart quite literally ahead of her big New Year’s Eve hosting spot is what lives rent-free in Qualley’s subconscious.
“Actually, just the night before last, I had a replica nightmare of when Sue loses her teeth, and she’s freaking out in front of the mirror,” Qualley said. “I’m one of those people who’s definitely had that nightmare before where you lose your teeth, but then I had the literal scene: I was looking in the mirror with only my two teeth. A Different Man, The Substance, Wolf Man… Body horror films have seen a sudden surge in Hollywood. We take a look at why that might be.
The human body has long been violated, penetrated and torn apart on the silver screen. Horror has always thrived on gore and the multiple ways you can make people suffer, especially physically. The early 2000s even saw the rise of ‘torture porn’, a genre which focuses primarily on extensive, almost silly gore.
2024 was a particularly strong year for body horror with both The Substance and A Different Man making their ways into UK cinemas. The Substance, which we awarded the full five stars in our review, is a strong contender at this year’s Oscars, especially after Demi Moore took home one of the Best Actress awards at the Golden Globes. A Different Man’s Sebastian Stan also took home Best Actor in Musical Or Comedy,...

The State of the Race
Once again, the last time the Best Original Screenplay Oscar was won exclusively by someone who did not direct the film was in 2011 for “The King’s Speech.” More specifically, the last time a director won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay who was not also nominated for Best Director that year was when Spike Jonze won for “Her” a decade ago.
So with that in mind, consider Sean Baker (“Anora”), Coralie Fargeat (“The Substance”), and Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold (“The Brutalist”) shoo-ins for a...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) unveiled its 2025 Awards nominees on Thursday, honoring an eclectic slate of films poised to dominate this year’s Oscar race.
Among the 10 nominees for the coveted Darryl F. Zanuck Award for outstanding producer of theatrical motion pictures are Sean Baker’s poignant dramedy “Anora,” Brady Corbet’s meticulously crafted historical epic “The Brutalist,” Edward Berger’s religious thriller “Conclave,” Jacques Audiard’s genre-bending musical “Emilia Pérez” and Jon M. Chu’s glittering adaptation of “Wicked.”
Perhaps the most unexpected entry in this year’s list is Tim Fehlbaum’s indie thriller “September 5.” The high-stakes dystopian drama, acquired by Paramount Pictures after generating buzz at Venice and Telluride, edged out high-profile contenders like RaMell Ross’ “Nickel Boys” and Greg Kwedar’s prison drama “Sing Sing.” The nod for “September 5” marks a significant moment for the underdog film, which now finds itself in the best picture conversation.

When the 2025 Oscars nominations are announced on Jan. 23 at 5:30 a.m. Pt, expect Emilia Pérez to be on top.
According to Gold Derby predictions, the Netflix musical dramedy is poised to receive 11 bids — more than any other contender — including Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), and Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña). That would be two fewer than last year’s nominations leader Oppenheimer at 13, but on par with 2022’s Everything Everywhere All at Once at 11 — both of which won Best Picture.
Close behind with 10 forecasted noms is A24’s The Brutalist, starring Best Actor frontrunner Adrien Brody as a Holocaust survivor who tries to live out the American Dream in the 1940s and 1950s. Expect nominations for Best Director (Brady Corbet), Best Supporting Actress (Felicity Jones), and Best Supporting Actor (Guy Pearce), per Gold Derby odds.

Conclave Leads Nominations (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Hollywood’s award season has already warmed up the new year; the Golden Globes successfully separated favorites from potential surprises, and nominations for SAG and Critics Choice Awards have already been unveiled. Now, the British Academy Film Awards have followed suit.
While Hollywood is fighting the cataclysmic California wildfires, postponing forthcoming ceremonies and extending Academy Awards submission dates, fortunately, all the way across the Atlantic Ocean, the British Isles face no such threat. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced nominees across 26 categories, recognizing outstanding contributions to cinema.
Doctor Who actor David Tennant, last year’s host, will return to lead the ceremony. This year marks one of the most competitive lineups, with no clear frontrunners and several close races. Blumhouse Pictures, the kings of horror at the box office for the past decade, didn’t make a big splash at the box office in 2024. This year looks to be much different, starting this weekend with Leigh Whannell’s “Wolf Man.”
According to exhibitors and rival distributors, “Wolf Man” is projected for a 3-day opening in the high teens. With MLK Day included, the Universal release is expected to earn a 4-day opening above $20 million.
This would be a higher opening than any of Blumhouse’s launches in 2024, as their last January release, “Night Swim,” and their September remake of “Speak No Evil” both opened to around $11 million. “Speak No Evil” was Blumhouse’s top film last year with $36.9 million domestic and $75.7 million worldwide.
To be clear, none of Blumhouse’s 2024 films were flops, easily clearing their production budgets which never exceeded $15 million. But 2024 was also only the second year...

The State of the Race
Though there are still nominations being announced here and there, the recent arrival of BAFTA and DGA nominations, plus certain films doing very well at the Golden Globes, can point to a few contenders that (for now) feel like a lock for a Best Director nomination at the 2025 Oscars.
For instance, “The Brutalist” helmer Brady Corbet was the big winner at the January ceremony, and has consistently been recognized in just about any Best Director category he’s eligible for. His narrative of taking initiative and...

Anora, A Complete Unknown, Challengers, Hit Man, and Wicked are among the 2025 Writers Guild of America Awards nominees.
In Best Original Screenplay, Anora and Challengers are up against A Real Pain, Civil War, and My Old Ass. The Best Adapted Screenplay lineup features A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Hit Man, Nickel Boys, and Wicked.
The nominations were announced Wednesday, a week after the guild postponed its scheduled Jan. 9 announcement due to the Los Angeles wildfires.

Seven years went from the time when director Coralie Fargeat made her feature directorial debut with a very cool revenge movie that was appropriately titled Revenge – you can read our 8/10 review of the film at This Link – and when she came back with an “explosive feminist take on body horror” called The Substance, which stars Demi Moore (Ghost) and Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). Fargeat’s second movie was worth the wait (you can read our 9/10 review Here), and has been streaming on the Mubi service since Halloween. Qualley wore some major prosthetic makeup for some sequences in the film – and during a new interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, she revealed that it took a year for her skin to recover from the irritation caused by those prosthetics.

Today, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) released the film nominations for 2025, with two international films leading the list. Edward Berger’s papal thriller Conclave received 12 nominations, and Jacques Audiard’s musical Emilia Pérez received 11 nominations.
Both films have open categories for the best film, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The Brutalist, directed by Brady Corbet and a Golden Globe winner, has received nine nominations.
Universal Pictures led the nominations this year with 32 for its films. The studio has had success with several productions: “The Brutalist” received nine nominations, “Anora” and “Wicked” got seven each, “Nosferatu” had five, “The Wild Robot” got three, and “Monkey Man” received one. Netflix trails behind with 16 nominations, partly thanks to “Emilia Pérez.”

Roll up, awards buffs: shiny trophy season is hotting up, with BAFTA having announced its nominees for this year’s ceremony. And fittingly, it seems BAFTA members might have gathered in robes to submit their votes on little white slips of paper: papal thriller Conclave is the most-nominated film this year, receiving 12 nods including Best Film, Director for Edward Berger, Leading Actor for Ralph Fiennes, Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini, Adapted Screenplay and more. Send up the white smoke, people.
Hot on Conclave’s heels is Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard’s genre-defying crime-thriller-musical-character-drama, in which a cartel boss undergoes gender-reassignment surgery to begin her new life. The film is nominated in 11 categories. Audiard is nominated for Director, while the film itself is up for Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Film Not In The English Language. Emilia herself, Karla Sofía Gascón, is up for Leading Actress, with Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña...

Universal is absolutely towering over the studios and streamers when it comes to this year’s BAFTA nominations.
Thanks to “The Brutalist” (nine nominations), “Anora” and “Wicked” (seven each), plus “Nosferatu” (five), “The Wild Robot” (three) and “Monkey Man” (one), Universal and its offshoot label Focus Features have amassed an astonishing 32 nominations in total, twice that of its nearest competitor, Netflix. The streamer landed 16 overall, led by the 11 from “Emilia Pérez.”
But Universal could have had five more had it not offloaded Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror “The Substance” before Cannes.
Further down, the nascent distributor Black Bear U.K. had a phenomenal year thanks to the 11 nominations for “Conclave”, and three for “Sing Sing.” Black Bear’s total of 12 was two up on Disney, which earned 10, most coming from Searchlight’s “A Complete Unknown.”

Wicked, Kneecap, Gladiator II star Denzel Washington, Sing Sing breakout Clarence Maclin, Queer lead Daniel Craig, and The Substance star Margaret Qualley were among the biggest snubs and surprises after the 78th annual BAFTA Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday.
Conclave and Emilia Pérez led all films with 12 and 11 nominations, respectively. Most of the expected Oscar contenders also landed predicted bids with British Academy of Film and Television Arts voters (the complete list of nominees is here). However, the BAFTA Awards snubs and surprises were slightly scooped by the BAFTA Awards themselves. Earlier this month, the BAFTA Awards revealed this year’s longlists in each category, with Netflix’s Emilia Pérez and Focus Features’ Conclave pacing the field with, respectively, 15 and 14 longlist mentions. Other contenders that performed well on the longlists included The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, and The Substance. Films and performers excluded from the longlists in key categories included Angelina Jolie,...

The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards nominations are in – here’s a look at the snubs and the snub-ies.
With A Real Pain star Will Sharpe and last year’s Rising Star Award winner Mia McKenna Bruce taking on hosting duties, the results are in for the films BAFTA’s 8,100 film awards voters consider the best of 2024.
It’s a lovely afternoon for Conclave and Emilia Pérez, leading the awards with 12 and 11 nominations respectively, and a slightly less lovely afternoon for Daniel Craig (who missed out on a Best Actor nod for Queer) and Denzel Washington, who holds onto his title as a no-time BAFTA-nominee after Gladiator II failed to register with voters.
Among the biggest surprises is the addition of Hugh Grant in the Best Actor category for his creepy-man role in Heretic – together with the three nominations for Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, 2025 is already showing the horror genre much more love than previous years.

They were led by Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical Emilia Perez (15), including leading actress and supporting actress mentions for Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez. Edward Berger’s Conclave followed with 14 nods, including leading actor and supporting actor for Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci, respectively.
After that, it was a three-way tie between Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown and Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance (11). Sean Baker’s Anora is honored with nine mentions on the longlists,...

On Wednesday, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced its 78th annual BAFTA Awards nominees, with expected contenders Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez nominated for Best Film.
Conclave led all films with 12 nominations, including bids for Best Film, Best British Film, Best Director for Edward Berger, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, Best Actor for Ralph Fiennes, and Best Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini. It’s the second time BAFTA voters have widely embraced a Berger feature in three years after giving All Quiet on the Western Front 14 nominations in 2023.
In second, just behind the nominations leader, was Emilia Pérez. Netflix’s top contender landed 11 BAFTA Award nominations, including Best Film, Best Film Not in English Language, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Jacques Audiard, Best Actress for Karla Sofia Gascón, and Best Supporting Actress for Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña.

Actress Margaret Qualley has shared that the prosthetic makeup she wore while shooting “The Substance” caused serious skin damage that took a year to heal.
In a recent “Happy Sad Confused” podcast episode, Qualley told host Josh Horowitz that her skin irritation became so severe that it changed the movie’s shooting schedule and how the cameras were used.
“They had to shoot up my skirt in the beginning credits, with palm trees all around and long lenses from the bottom, because my face was so damaged they couldn’t shoot it anymore,” Qualley said. Director Coralie Fargeat had to use clever camera settings to solve the problem.
Qualley still had skin issues during her next project, “Kinds of Kindness,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. The damage helped her play one of the four roles in the movie better than she expected.

In a recent interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Margaret Qualley said it took “a year” for her skin to recover from the irritation caused by the face prosthetics used in “The Substance.” The damage was so bad that director Coralie Fargeat had to frame out her face in certain shots.
“At the end, when they’re shooting up my skirt in the beginning credits, and it’s like the palm trees all around and they have all these long lenses from the bottom, that’s just because my face was so fucked up,” Qualley said. “They couldn’t shoot my face anymore.”
The acne from the prosthetics lasted long after “The Substance” wrapped and persisted as she began shooting her next film, “Kinds of Kindness,” in which she played four characters: Vivian, Martha, Rebecca and Ruth. Luckily, the acne played to her benefit in the Yorgos Lanthimos drama.

While on an upcoming episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit Podcast, writer and director Coralie Fargeat broke down the cinematic lineage of her “The Substance.” When talking about her much-heralded body horror sensation — the rare genre film to break into the awards race — Fargeat discussed wanting to make a film that “stays with you long after you leave the theater.” Fargeat has spent a great deal of time analyzing why certain movies left a lasting imprint on her and what she could learn from each.
“It’s about the phantasmagoria, the fact that you break the rules of reality,” said Fargeat. “You create the reality of your film, and then I think it gives you such a freedom to create something that no one else but you is going to create for your own movie.”
It’s how David Cronenberg, Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch, the Coen brothers, Darren Aronofsky, and John Carpenter...

Now, Mubi has shared a making-of featurette that goes behind the scenes for The Substance for 28 minutes, and you can check it out in the embed above!
The film is gory, but also humorous, and it’s quite a wild ride. Here’s the official synopsis: It generates another you. A new, younger, more beautiful, more perfect you. And...

Out of respect for those affected by the L.A. wildfires, the American Cinema Editors have announced that the 2025 Ace Eddie Awards has been postponed. A new date for the 75th annual ceremony will be announced soon.
The reimagined gala, which will still honor Wicked director Jon M. Chu with the Ace Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, will “pivot from a black-tie, red carpet event to a ‘Come as You Are’ community-building fundraiser,” the organization announced. In addition, a portion of the ticket sales will be donated to Southern California fire relief. The guild’s private cocktail party celebrating the Ace Eddie Awards nominees is also being moved to a new date. See more event changes in the wake of the wildfires.
The guild’s official statement is: “Due to the ongoing concerns for safety within our L.A. communities, we have made arrangements with UCLA and Royce Hall...

(Warning: This story contains spoilers for Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance).
In the final scenes of The Substance, things get messy.
Coralie Fargeat’s body horror satire follows the descent of former A-lister Elisabeth Sparkle who, in a desperate attempt to recapture her youth and stay relevant in sexist and ageist Hollywood, starts taking a mysterious chemical called The Substance. Things go very, very wrong.
Shortly after injecting the substance, Sparkle (Demi Moore, who just picked up her first-ever Golden Globe for the role) is writhing on her bathroom floor. Her back splits down the spine and Sue, a slimy, younger version of herself (played by Margaret Qualley) crawls out. Initially, the two clones follow the plan, swapping out every seven days. The body in the bathroom is kept alive with a feeding tube, while the other free is free live their life.
But the siren of youth beacons, and...

One month ago, we asked Gemini AI for Oscar predictions, and it endorsed Gladiator II as a contender for picture, director (Ridley Scott), and supporting actor (Denzel Washington). Well, Google’s artificial intelligence bot has rebooted, and it now believes the mixed-reviewed sequel will be mostly forgotten come Oscars time. In fact, Gemini’s current picks in the six main categories align much more closely with Gold Derby’s overall choices.
You can see Gemini’s forecasted nominations below, where The Brutalist, a period piece about a Holocaust survivor who’s trying to live the American Dream, is expected to clean up with bids for picture, director (Brady Corbet), actor (Adrien Brody), supporting actress (Felicity Jones), and supporting actor (Guy Pearce). Meanwhile, Anora, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez are expected to nab four noms apiece in the six main races.

Coralie Fargeat's masterful body horror film The Substance has been all the rage this awards season, not only because it's excellent but also because it's so rare for a horror movie to get nominated at the most prestigious award shows. Notably, Demi Moore won her first Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy earlier this month, where the film also received nominations for Best Director, Best Motion Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress (Margaret Qualley).
Following the Golden Globes, The Substance continues to win awards from organizations like the Austin Film Critics Association and the Alliance of Women Film Journalists. The film has also been nominated for Critics' Choice Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award. It seems increasingly likely that The Substance will receive Academy Award attention. Some professional critics even believe Moore could be a frontrunner for this year's Best Actress race.
