Masters of the Air is the third entry in a collection of miniseries produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg about the United States’ involvement in World War II. Following Band of Brothers in 2001 and The Pacific in 2010, Masters of the Air takes to the skies to explore the U.S. Air Force’s efforts to take down the Axis Powers.
In speaking to Den of Geek prior to the series’ premiere on Apple TV+, executive producer of all three series Gary Goetzman explained how they were (or were not) related.
“We don’t ever cross over, you know,” Goetzman says. “Band of Brothers was its own thing. And the more anthological approach we took with The Pacific was its own thing. I feel this is different too. Their connection is they’re all facets of World War II performed differently and all heading for the same hopeful solution of getting rid of Hitler.

If one were to broadly characterize each "Star Trek" show into a small handful of themes, one might say that the original "Star Trek" from 1966 is about bravery and balance. The characters are presented as bold — if not clumsy — frontiersman, frequently relying on their instincts and their brash confidence to escape difficult situations. Captain Kirk (William Shatner) often employs clever military tactics to outwit enemies. At the same time, he relies on the advice from his cold, emotionless first officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy) just as much as he relies on the passionate, angered responses of his very human medical officer Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley).
In contrast, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" is about the power of intellect, the importance of management skills, and the eternal solution of diplomacy. Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) often asks for input from his entire senior staff, stands somewhat aloof, and celebrates ancient literature. Only occasionally...

Less sexualized than Gary Cooper and less filled with warm-hearted optimism than James Stewart, Gregory Peck nonetheless found a place for himself in classical Hollywood with a stoic (if occasionally muted), comfortingly authoritative presence. His career began in the early 1940s, when he found quick success as a leading man, and developed throughout the 1950s and 1960s when he took on the role that most people identify him with to this day: Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird." Beyond that, he continued making appearances in film and television until 2000, just a few short years before his death in 2003 at the age of 87.
Although he's occasionally overlooked in favor of the more overtly charismatic leading men of his day, Gregory Peck has an incredibly impressive filmography that could go toe-to-toe against any other actor from the classic Hollywood era. He even has the awards to prove it, with one competitive Oscar to his name,...

There exists in this world a certain kind of war buff. They are the kind that obsesses over machinery, battlefield layout, and moment-by-moment plans of attack. These wartime aficionados are not necessarily interested in the death or mayhem of war, nor do they concern themselves with causes or wartime morality, but focus on the logistics, the devices, and the more personal or tactile experiences instead. Aaron Schneider's WWII combat drama "Greyhound," written by and starring Tom Hanks and based on the novel by C.S. Forester, was a film specifically for those people. It's what you might call, as /Film did in its review, a dad movie.

Aaron Schneider welcomed working with Tom Hanks on their new film “Greyhound” as it was “Saving Private Ryan” which inspired his first film as a director. “Tom’s production company has a long history of WWII projects with ‘Band of Brothers’ and ‘The Pacific’ and they defined the state of the art in creating authentic productions.” Schneider was part of Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel, conducted virtually by this writer (watch the exclusive video above).
“Greyhound,” which is an Apple TV+ release, unfolds during the Battle of the Atlantic. American ships filled with troops and supplies engaged in a game of cat and mouse to avoid the German U-boats. Hanks adapted C.S. Forester’s novel “The Good Shepherd” and plays the captain of a fleet of three dozen ships.

“Greyhound” cinematographer Shelly Johnson vividly recalls those anxious days before filming began when he was still waiting on the arrival of the Sphero 65 lenses. Johnson was part of Gold Derby’s Meet the Btl Experts panel, conducted virtually by this writer (watch the exclusive video above). “I wanted the Sphero 65 because they are old and they are a marvelous pairing with this modern camera. The camera separates the colors and the lenses meld them back together. That combination is a lot of giving the movie the presence that it has.”

C.S. Forester’s novel was originally bought by Columbia for Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester, then sold to Warners for Errol Flynn and Bette Davis. John Huston found it years later at Fox. He encouraged Katherine Hepburn, who suffered from dysentery through most of the shoot, to play her role like Eleanor Roosevelt. Screenwriter James Agee, sidelined by a heart attack, disliked the happy ending provided by Huston and writer Peter Vertiel.

(Worry not — this article does Not contain any spoilers for the Apple TV+ film “Greyhound” starring Tom Hanks)
The World War II subgenre of films has been going strong pretty much since the war itself ended 75 years ago. And now the Apple TV+ streaming service has given us the latest entry in that subgenre: the Tom Hanks naval thriller “Greyhound,” about a newly minted commander leading a convoy of ships in a dangerous journey across the Atlantic Ocean.
Hanks’s character, Captain Krause, is a longtime Navy officer, but he’s taking part in war for the first time in the wake of Pearl Harbor. His job: escort a convoy of supply ships across the Atlantic Ocean and defend them from Nazi U-boats if necessary.
It is necessary, of course. Otherwise, “Greyhound” would be a pretty boring movie. But is this story something that actually happened? Was Captain Krause real?...

Like many other movies over the past few months, Tom Hanks’ latest has had to skip a traditional theatrical release and drop exclusively on streaming thanks to the closure of cinemas in response to the pandemic. Having Hanks attached to a film is usually a major mark of quality, so folks will definitely want to check out World War II drama Greyhound and here’s how you can catch it.
Greyhound was originally set to arrive in theaters this past March, but that plan was nixed when the Covid-19 outbreak brought on a worldwide quarantine. Instead, Apple snapped up the rights to distribute the film from Sony Pictures for a cool $70 million. It’s finally available exclusively on AppleTV+ from today, July 10th, so if you’re already a subscriber, go ahead and check it out.
If you’re not, then you can make use of the service’s free trial.

Tom Hanks has a knack for playing courageous captains who constantly beat the odds. He also has a habit of starring in or producing sterling World War II dramas. This holds true from Captain Phillips to Sully on one side of this paradigm, and Band of Brothers to The Pacific on the other. But for the first time since the one that started it all, Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan, the two old reliable tropes intersect once more with Greyhound, a new naval thriller premiering on Apple TV+.
Yet, to borrow from another famous World War II event, this might’ve been a bridge too far—or a captain too generic. After getting deserved Oscar recognition for Ryan (and being unfairly overlooked for Phillips and Sully), Hanks attempts to return to form in Greyhound, but cuts a much more relaxed figure than his crisp naval uniform would suggest. Despite...

Tom Hanks probably never imagined his first film screenplay since That Thing You Do would be a direct-to-streaming endeavor.
But it's 2020, and the tumultuous year not only left Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, struck with Covid-19 while on location in Australia this February, but it's also breathed new life into the streaming film industry.
As studios still struggle to juggle future releases within an ever-changing landscape, Hanks decided to take a chance on streaming, landing an exclusive deal with Apple TV+ that gets Greyhound worldwide release on Friday, July 10.
This is the second war movie in as many weeks with a streaming premiere. There's little doubt that a Hanks' vehicle will be the barometer for future streaming releases.
Greyhound is centered on the Battle of the Atlantic, one of the longest and most tenuous battles of World War II taking place entirely on water.

Showboating: Schneider Sinks Ships with WWII Historical Action
Cinema is littered with war-time submarine action epics, a claustrophobic setting which taps into universal anxieties and fears, and a new addition to a dwindling subgenre is Greyhound, the sophomore effort from Academy Award Winner Aaron Schneider, last behind the camera with the droll dark comedy Get Low (2009).
Written by and starring Tom Hanks, the exercise is an adaptation of the 1955 novel by C.S. If a patriotic, proudly square tale of military courage under fire (minus the Trumpian jingoism) is what you’re looking for in these pandemic times, Greyhound (available on Apple+ starting July 10th) should float your boat. The last time Tom Hanks played the captain of a big ship, he was fighting Somali pirates in “Captain Phillips,” a kinetic, immersive big-screen experience that was nominated for six Academy Awards. He’s now back at sea in “Greyhound,” but this time Hanks plays the commander of a World War II destroyer fighting Nazi submarines in the North Atlantic — and this time the film will be seen on a small screen, because Sony sold it to Apple TV+ for release this week.
That makes “Greyhound” the third recent war-related film to be given a predominantly streaming release, following Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods” and Rod Lurie’s “The Outpost” — and like those two films, this one at times screams out to be seen on a bigger screen than most viewers will be able to give it.
On the other hand, “Greyhound” is pretty modest as war movies go.

‘Greyhound’ Review: Tom Hanks Is Lost at Sea as a Navy Commander in Apple TV’s Rudderless WWII Movie
At some point in his long and beloved career, Tom Hanks began to transition from America’s sweetheart to America’s serenity. He steeled a troop of soldiers on a veritable suicide mission in “Saving Private Ryan,” remained stoic as Somali pirates hijacked his container ship in “Captain Phillips,” and landed Us Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson without losing a single one of the 155 souls on board in “Sully.” It’s a screen image that has naturally spilled over into real life, as we saw earlier this year when Hanks’ became one of the first major celebrities diagnosed with Covid-19; his fame helped people recognize the reality of the virus, and his composure helped people steel themselves for its imminent arrival on our shores.
At the same time, much of Hanks’ enduring relevance can be attributed to the eagerness with which he’s complicated, subverted, parodied, and generally played with that persona.

As a producer, actor, writer and director, Tom Hanks has shown deep admiration for the courage of World War II Armed Forces, in work encompassing Saving Private Ryan, TV projects Band of Brothers, The Pacific and the upcoming Masters of the Air, as well as the documentaries He Has Seen War and Beyond All Boundaries. The theme of American valor and heroism also has been a thread through many of his roles. So it's no surprise that Hanks was drawn to adapt and star in a screen version of C.S. Forester's 1955 historical maritime novel, The Good Shepherd.

This summer, Tom Hanks is going back to World War II. Not only is he starring in Greyhound, a Navy film set during the war that Hanks is so compelled by, he’s even written the screenplay adaptation. That alone made this one to look forward to in June. Now, we have a Trailer today to dive into (no pun intended). Hanks and company are looking to make a thrilling action epic, in addition to a portrait of a conflicted leader. If he succeeds, we may have an awards player on our hands. You can see the Trailer at the end of the post, as per the usual… The movie is a WWII period piece, mixing action with drama. The simple synopsis, from IMDb, is as follows: “During World War II, a Us Navy skipper must lead an Allied convoy being stalked by Nazi U-boat wolf packs.” Hanks stars as Commander Ernest Krause,...

The first trailer for the seafaring World War II epic “Greyhound,” directed by Aaron Schneider, has landed. The movie stars Tom Hanks as a Navy commander on his first wartime assignment amid World War II’s Battle for the Atlantic between the Allied and the Axis powers. Hanks also wrote the film’s screenplay, from a novel by C.S. Forester. The movie hits U.S. shores on June 12. Watch the trailer below.
In “Greyhound,” in the early days of World War II, an international convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by captain Ernest Krause (Hanks) in his first command of a U.S. destroyer, crosses the North Atlantic while being pursued by Nazi U-boats. Amid the treachery of the maritime battle at stake, Krause must also face his own demons and self-doubts as a newly minted commander. Sony’s Tom Hanks World War II movie Greyhound is jumping from its May 8 weekend to June 12, as a means to tee off before the Father’s Day weekend of June 19-21. I hear the pic’s rescheduling has nothing to do with coronavirus fears which are weighing on many distribs’ minds, but rather it being an opportune time to capture sons and fathers while also capitalizing on the Flag Day holiday on June 14.
The pic, directed by Aaron Schneider, and also adapted by Hanks from the C.S. Forester novel, follows a Us Navy skipper who must lead an Allied convoy being stalked by Nazi U-boat wolf packs. Elisabeth Shue also stars. Gary Goetzman produces. EPs are Jason Cloth, David Coatsworth, Aaron L. Gilbert, Sanping Han, Michael Jackman, Milan Popelka, Aaron Ryder, Steve Shareshian, and Alex Zhang.

Ahead of screenings at the Telluride Film Festival over Labor Day weekend, Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Errol Morris debuted a series of 19 30-second spots featuring “Better Call Saul” Emmy nominee Bob Odenkirk.
Each of the clips, which IndieWire has assembled into a single video below, slyly points at a different aspect of climate change, with Odenkirk playing Admiral Horatio Horntower (obviously a play on C.S. Forester’s fictional Horatio Hornblower character) as he stands atop a disappearing iceberg, pondering life’s mysteries alongside his animal friends who realize, unlike Horatio, that the planet is on the brink of a total climate meltdown. “I’m not worried!” says Horatio, who’s in denial. But the penguins and the seals are awake to what’s going on in these clips presented by Biscuit Filmworks & Fourth Floor Productions.
