This article contains spoilers for "Invincible."
A superhero is only as good as their villains. "Invincible" knows this and has produced some memorable enemies for Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) — from his own father Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), an alien invader disguised as a superhero, to dimension-traveler Angstrom Levy (Sterling K. Brown). The sixth and latest episode of "Invincible" season 3 — "All I Can Say Is I'm Sorry" — introduces another foe worthy of Invincible, one who poses the questions that Mark needs to be asking himself.
Now, "Invincible" creator Robert Kirkman has so far failed to get Bryan Cranston on the show, but Cranston's former "Breaking Bad" co-star Aaron Paul is another story. Paul was announced to be joining "Invincible" back in January, shortly before the season premiered, and his character is Scott Duvall/Powerplex.

One of the most devastating yet prominent topics in media, war has been the ruinous reality of humankind throughout history — which explains why art reflects on war so often. While anime might not be the first medium that comes to mind when thinking of profound tales of military conflict, the war anime niche is surprisingly prolific and filled with discerning explorations of the subject.
From unnervingly realistic portrayals of historical conflicts to fictionalized, fantastical warfare that allegorically examines grounded themes, anime series about war stand up to the challenge of covering this challenging topic with all the nuance it requires. Some of the medium's most compelling and thought-provoking works are dedicated to depicting how war and its horrors affect people, resulting in poignant, sincere narratives that use the subject for more than its action appeal.

Disney films have always had a powerful pull over pop culture. However, few are as ubiquitous as Pirates of the Caribbean. The beloved series held the world in a nautical chokehold throughout the 2000s, and its original trilogy has since expanded to include two additional films.
However, these newer films are notably different than the original entries. Of course, many of these variations can be explained by time and distance. The fourth film, On Stranger Tides, debuted three years after the trilogy’s conclusion. The fifth, Dead Men Tell No Tales, followed a six-year gap. Both pop culture and the film’s stars had largely moved on since At World’s End. But one glaring difference caught audiences completely off-guard. Neither the beloved Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) nor the dashing Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) were present in On Stranger Tides. Both of these characters were pivotal parts of the original series,...

There's a lot to love in Netflix's animated "Castlevania" shows. Based on the hit video game franchise of the same name, the sharply animated shows feature a fun alternate history to our own, where real-world events have been altered by the inclusion of supernatural beings like vampires and demons. There are some truly great characters with a lot of charm, some fantastically tragic antiheroes, and some good old-fashioned blood and gore. The sequel series, "Castlevania: Nocturne," has done well for the streamer, continuing the story set forth in "Castlevania" and setting up one of the best storylines in the whole saga, "Symphony of the Night."
But even if Netflix inexplicably gives "Castlevania" the axe (or stake), there's great news for fans who just can't get enough of vampires, alternate history, amazing animated violence, and guys named Alucard, because there's a classic anime franchise that contains all of those things: "Hellsing.

Sung Jinwoo gained the Shadow Extraction ability at the end of Solo Leveling's first season, and if given the opportunity, Jinwoo could use it to turn some of anime's strongest characters into Shadows. These Shadows fight on Jinwoo's behalf, but he can only turn other living beings into Shadows by killing them first. That said, there are limitations, so it would be best for Jinwoo to target powerful human characters.
These characters may be human, but most possess superhuman abilities that they should still keep, even after becoming Shadows. These characters can help Jinwoo fight the Monarchs, Dungeon monsters and other Hunters. Some of these characters are strong enough to take on S-Rank opponents and Monarchs on their own. Jinwoo's Shadows can regenerate, so as long as he has mana, he can keep summoning them.

The 1990s was a landmark decade for the anime medium, as it saw anime gain a foothold among viewers around the world. Many of the biggest works from this era are still revered to this day, be it among those who grew up watching them or newer anime fans who've gone back to enjoying the classics. While everyone knows about Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon, there were several other great anime released in the '90s that didn't get nearly as much attention.
The 1990s had many hits that developed the anime medium in pivotal ways, continuing the artistic energy of the 1980s while also laying the groundwork for anime becoming more internationally mainstream. These included overlooked mecha classics and fantasy works that were right out of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. While they might not have been as memorable as other anime from that time, these classics can still be revisited today.

"Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" has now debuted on Disney+ and put an animated Spider-Man back on screens everywhere. I hope that the show is entertaining young Spidey fans the same way that the 1994 "Spider-Man" animated series and "Spectacular Spider-Man" did for my younger self. Developed by "Gargoyles" creator Greg Weisman, "Spectacular Spider-Man" ran for two seasons (26 episodes) from 2008 to 2009. Unfortunately, the truly spectacular cartoon ended prematurely due to Sony forfeiting animation rights to Spider-Man back to Marvel.
"Spectacular Spider-Man" remains a fan-favorite, for it's the perfect distillation of the character. It essentially updated the original Lee/Ditko comics for the present day, with the added foresight of being able to weave together the canonical Spider-Man stories and supporting characters from the very beginning, rather than through decades of trial and error, and countless different writers and artists. For example, Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn debuted in "Amazing Spider-Man" #31, but they...

Haruhi Suzumiya was one of the most popular anime of the 2000s, if not the most popular, yet to the disappointment of many, the series ended in 2010 after its theatrical film, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, despite there still being plenty of light novels for the anime to adapt.

Actors have lots of concerns around generative artificial intelligence. A big one: What does an AI-generated version of me say or do, and do I have control over who pulls the strings? And: What if the AI version of you looks more like… Super Mario?
Last year, actors spent 118 days on strike against the film and TV studios in 2023, with AI as a major component. It was the last thing agreed upon before the strike was lifted.
One summer later, actors are on strike again — this time against major video game studios like Disney, Warner Bros., Take Two, and Activision — and it’s all about AI. Video game actors hit the picket lines August 1.
The guild’s position is actors aren’t defined by the medium. Whether it’s film, TV, or video games, AI and other rights should be consistent; video game studios, to put it mildly, disagree.

There have been numerous animated shows based on characters and the universe within DC Comics released, but none have managed to captivate an audience for over a decade like Young Justice. Originally premiering on Cartoon Network in 2010, Young Justice follows the titular team and its members as they interact with the universe surrounding them. The show's main characters are, namely, Artemis, Kaldur'ahm, Miss Martian, Nightwing, Superboy, and Wally West. Young Justice also sports an array of talented voice actors, including Jesse McCartney, Khary Payton, Mae Whitman and Troy Baker.
Despite the show lasting for over 13 years, the show has only completed four seasons due to the show's cancellation after season two. The show's dedicated fan base helped to rally for the show's return, after it landed on Netflix, and enabled the series to return for a third season.

Anime dubs can have performances that rival the original Japanese versions, showcasing great talent and adding their own unique flair. Some of the best anime dub performances capture the essence of the characters and the story, standing out for their over-the-top nature or grounded delivery. English anime dubs, despite their reputation, should not be dismissed easily, as they have proven to be successful in bringing anime to a wider audience and showcasing the talent of voice actors.
While discussions of anime tend to focus on shows in their original Japanese, anime dubs still have plenty of merit. Voice actors in other languages can provide performances with just as much heart as the original Japanese performances, and in some cases, there have been times when a dub performance is seen as so great that people prefer it over the original Japanese.

While the original 1995 Ghost in the Shell is hailed as a classic for cyberpunk and anime, fans shouldn't miss out on the anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. The series' dub is hailed as an all-time great as well; with its mature, adult-oriented story making anime more accesible for adults.
Stand Alone Complex follows Major Motoko Kusanagi and her team at Section 9 as they investigate an incident which spirals out into a far bigger conspiracy. Spoilers for "The Bad Batch" Season 2 Episode 12 - "The Outpost" follow.
Once more, the Bad Batch (voiced by Dee Bradley Baker) takes a breather from the continuing narrative and this episode focuses solely on their former member, Crosshair. Crosshair watches on Coruscant as more clones are shipped off into forced retirement and the new Stormtroopers take over. Then, he's assigned to Lieutenant Nolan (Crispin Freeman)to head to a distant outpost to pick up crates of equipment "vital" to the Empire. On the planet Barton-4, they find a snowy wasteland defended by three clones led by one named Mayday. They've been on the planet defending the cargo for more than a year without reinforcements and insurgents have continued attacking them, consistently whittling down their numbers.
When another attack breaks out and the insurgents make off with two crates of important Imperial goods, Nolan assigns Mayday and Crosshair to personally recover them.

In the second season, Bayside High is back in session, despite the Season 1 finale teasing the emergence of Covid-19 in the world of the show. Now, the students are getting ready to compete in the Southern California School Spirit Competition, with Mac (Mitchell Hoog) seeing it as a way to finally get out of his father Zack’s (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) shadow. Meanwhile, Daisy (Haskiri Velazquez) finds herself paying more attention to her love life than she wants to; Jamie (Belmont Cameli) leans on Lexi (Josie Totah) in the wake of his parents’ divorce — with Lexi struggling to be a more understanding girlfriend; Aisha (Alycia Pascual-Peña) looks for a new outlet after football gets canceled; DeVante (Dexter Darden) enters into a relationship with a rich Bayside girl; and Slater (Mario Lopez) and Jessie (Elizabeth Berkley Lauren) grow closer.

A flaw with the Haruhi Suzumiya series lies in its massive fantastical elements. The stories could get really grand, insane and the characters just had to roll with whatever was thrown their way. The animated series never had a sense of real dramatic pay-off. Don’t get me wrong, the storylines are fun to watch but those moments of drama when they did happen captured human emotion brilliantly and you can’t help but wish for more of it. Well, that’s what the movie taps into and excels in turning a story known largely for its comedy into something much more grounded.
The premise of the movie is self-explanatory given what the title is. Haruhi disappears. Literally, Kyon wakes up on a cold December...

When you’re a kid, you imagine a lot of things. We fantasise about epic adventures around things like time travel and supernatural beings like ghosts, espers, aliens. However, most of us grow out of these fantasies because we learn to live with everyday reality bound by the laws of physics. This is an anime that is about all of these eccentric fantasies and brings them to life in hilarious and joyous ways.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya centres around Kyon. On the surface, Kyon is a pretty average high school student (minus the fact that we never learn his real name. Kyon is a nickname). Life for him gets a lot more interesting after he meets Haruhi Suzumiya. Haruhi is far from your typical girl. To quote her directly, “I’m not interested in ordinary people but if any of you are aliens, time travellers or espers, please come see me.

Hiroyuki Imaishi is–in the very best way–one of animation’s finest ambassadors of Adhd. His 2004 directorial debut, Dead Leaves, is a masterpiece of sci-fi action insanity: 50 minutes of delirious stylized motion, featuring ultra-angular “superflat” designs combining the most expressive deformities of Eastern and Western comics and cartoons; a psychedelic adrenaline rush that diffuses the full density of a pulpy jailbreak action flick into half the running time and several times the visual scope. It is the pure cinematic embodiment of a film viewer, and filmmaker, whose bountiful imagination strikes dynamite creative synthesis with a short-fuse attention span. Dead Leaves was a minor event at the time, consigned to direct-to-dvd release overseas and ultimately, perhaps, too aggressively weird and explicit to capture the fancy of either mainstream critics or otaku. But 15 years later, Imaishi–who found breakout success in TV anime and co-founded his own studio, Trigger–has become...

Young Justice: Outsiders gives us three thirds of a good episode broken by pacing issues
This Young Justice review contains spoilers.
Young Justice: Outsiders Episode 4
The first episode of the second batch of Young Justice's return is mostly transitional, and while it's got a lot to like, there are a couple of issues that I'm worried point to a bigger, structural problem that may develop with the show.
When we left our team (not to be confused with The Team), they were kicking ass in Markovia to rescue a bunch of kidnapped kids and the newly powered crown prince. "Private Security" sort of picks up where they left off, but it jumps around in time a little. There are three different thirds of individual good episodes, but there are a couple of tacked on plots that feel like mandatory check ins, and the way they're paced out doesn't integrate at all.

Four-year-old Kun is an only child — this is, until his parents bring home a baby sister named Mirai (the Japanese word for future) and the boy gets rattled by the new addition to the household. Not much there for a full-length feature film … or so you’d think. Except you are in the presence of Japanese animation artist Mamoru Hosoda (Wolf Children, Summer Wars), who again transforms the seemingly conventional into a magic carpet ride of time and memory. It makes all the difference.

Those who aren’t familiar with anything but the cute Teen Titans series are in for quite a surprise as the heroes return to their darker roots in Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, which is one of the most incredible efforts from the comics. The feature-length film is inspired by a story arc from the 1984 DC comic, and has an incredible voice cast backing the supremely gritty arc.
The Blu-Ray Giftset, which includes an exclusive Blue Beetle figurine, will hit on April 18th, with Digital HD release on April 4th.
In The Judas Contract, the Titans – Beast Boy, Raven, Blue Beetle, Robin, and Nightwing – are led by Starfire, but their newest teammate, Terra, is throwing the groups dynamic out of whack, and the team comes up against Brother Blood, an ancient evil, and Deathstroke is waiting in the wings to cause problems as well.

With the release of Justice League Dark now being behind us, it’s time that we look forward to the next DC animated film to be released by Warner Home Video, Teen Titans: The Judas Contract. Originally slated to arrive in 2008, this loose adaptation of the popular comic written by Marv Wolfman and illustrated by George Perez has finally become a reality and is set to arrive via Digital HD on April 4, with Blu-ray and DVD releases following on April 18, which, to be quite honest, falls within the period we predicted.

Today marked the beginning of a SAG-aftra strike against 11 video game companies. For the first time in the history of the video game actors’ union, which now numbers 165,000, its members have been instructed to withhold their services, effective immediately.
The issues have been simmering since February 2015, when the existing labor agreement between SAG-aftra members and the video game companies expired. Four more meetings over 19 months failed to find a compromise, and SAG-aftra announced the strike effective just after midnight October 21.

Earlier tonight, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment held a panel and a world premiere screening for their upcoming animated adventure Batman: Assault on Arkham at Comic-Con. During the panel, the studio announced the new titles that will debut in 2015, Batman Vs. Robin and Justice League: Gods and Monsters.
Bruce W. Timm will return to direct Batman Vs. Robin, which will also feature the Court of Owls. While no story details were given, it's believed that this will be an origin story featuring Talon and the Court of Owls, possibly adapted straight from Scott Snyder's comic book. In Court of Owls, Batman and Robin don't actually square off against one another, although there is a bit of tension between the duo and Nightwing. It's believed that this may also be a completely original story based on those characters, but that has not been confirmed.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Solid State Society has got to be one of the longest anime titles going, but fitting as this is the final part of the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series based on Masamune Shirow’s manga.

Young Justice returned last night with “Targets,” an episode that featured Red Arrow (Crispin Freeman) on a solo adventure in Tapei, Taiwan to keep the League of Shadows from starting a war between North and South Rhelasia, a country that split in half after World War II (much like Korea), where peace has eluded the citizens far too long. Unintentionally attracting the attention of Howl (Takuya Kimura/Christian Bale), Sophie invokes the jealous wrath of the Witch of the Waste (Akihiro Miwa/Lauren Bacall), who curses the young haberdasher with...
