On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Let Me Own This Blu-Ray Before I’m Buried in My Official Kiss-Branded Coffin
Few musical acts in American history have done more with less than Kiss. Despite boasting some of the simplest and most uninspired (if occasionally very catchy) songs of the 1970s, the shock rock act built a loyal following and merchandising empire around the novel idea of wearing makeup while singing. Their onstage theatrics and commitment to rock and rolling all night and partying every day — tons of people can do one or the other, but...

Kiss recently played their final concert ever, but singer-bassist Gene Simmons is not ready to quit performing quite yet.
Simmons has booked a date with his solo project, Gene Simmons Band, at the Brazil edition of the Summer Breeze festival on April 26th in São Paulo. It’s the first post-kiss activity from any of the remaining band members, and the announcement comes just over a month after Kiss retired from performing in human, non-avatar form after two concerts at Madison Square Garden.
Simmons’ solo band last played in 2018 and typically runs through a setlist comprised of Simmons-penned Kiss material and deep cuts. The band’s current lineup is rounded out by guitarists Brent Woods and Zach Throne (Corey Taylor) and drummer Brian Tichy.
For Simmons, the solo shows have offered a more intimate setting — and one where he can dig deep into Kiss’ songbook.

Ace Frehley would love to tour Europe in support of his upcoming album, 10,000 Volts, but he has one big hurdle to get past. The founding Kiss guitarist is currently unable to renew his passport due to a huge tax debt.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer was asked by Finnish music site Chaos Zine about what’s preventing him from touring in Europe (and presumably other overseas locations), and he gave a very honest answer.
“Well, there’s a good chance I can make it to Europe in late summer if I get my passport renewed,” responded Frehley. “I’ve been having issues with renewing my passport because I have some problems with the IRS [Internal Revenue Service], and it’s not really the passport bureau but the IRS. Since I owe the IRS a couple of hundred grand, and they just instituted a new law that if you owe...

In a perfect world, Kiss would have wrapped up the final show of their End of the World tour by inviting former members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss onto the stage for tearful hugs, an end to the bitterness that has consumed the group for decades, and one last rendition of “Rock and Roll All Nite,” giving the inevitable biopic a perfect last scene.
In the world we actually live on, Criss and Frehley were nowhere in sight when Kiss played their (supposed) final show at Madison Square Garden on Saturday evening.

Ace Frehley has announced his new solo album, 10,000 Volts, arriving February 23rd via Mnrk Music Group. The music video for the title track can be streamed now.
The song gives off Frehley’s Comet vibes with its glam-metal strut and big ’80s chorus. Ace rips off a fiery solo, as well, taking over the instrumental break in the otherwise pop-centric tune.
The album was produced by Frehley and Steve Brown of Trixter, whose pop-metal sensibilities shine through in the title cut.
Discussing the album in a recent interview, Frehley said his latest solo album would make his former Kiss bandmate Paul Stanley “look like an imbecile,” adding further barbs to the their tempestuous relationship and all but confirming that Ace won’t be appearing onstage during Kiss’ final concerts.
As for Steve Brown, Frehley gushed about his new collaborator. “Working with Steve has made a huge difference in my playing...

Sometime around 11 p.m. on Dec. 2, Gene Simmons will walk offstage at Madison Square Garden in New York as the final notes of “Rock and Roll All Nite” echo through the arena, remove his Demon makeup for the last time, and say goodbye to the band he formed five decades ago. It’s easy to be skeptical about this considering nearly every farewell tour in rock history has been bullshit, this is actually the second Kiss goodbye tour, and this isn’t a band known for leaving money on the table,...

Former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley is looking to let his music do the talking when it comes to his feud with ex-bandmate Paul Stanley. But, he’s also letting his mouth do the talking, too!
Earlier this year, Stanley told Howard Stern that Kiss would sound like “Piss” if they let original members Frehley and Peter Criss back in the band. Frehley then threatened to spill dirt on Stanley and Gene Simmons if he didn’t get an apology from Stanley. He later reported that Stanley’s response to his demand for an apology was, “Fuck you!”
In a new interview with 93.5 FM Max (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), Frehley pointed to his ability to maintain a steady music career following his exit from the band 20 years ago.
“It was hard in the beginning, but now I’ve picked up a lot of steam,” said Frehley, “In fact, I remember … the...

Ever since Kiss announced that they were wrapping up their final tour with two shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, there has been speculation of founding members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss joining the band onstage for a reunion.
In a new interview with Linea Rock (see below), Gene Simmons said that he’s extended multiple invitations to Frehley and Criss, who have both turned down the invites to play with Kiss during the final shows. This comes after a long and tiresome feud between the former members and the current Kiss faction — particularly founding members Simmons and Paul Stanley.
“For the fans — the older, older fans — the ones who’ve been around for 50 years, they’re old, and some of them wanna see Ace and Peter,” Simmons said [as transcribed by Blabbermouth]. “The newer fans never saw them and they don’t know. But the older fans wonder about Ace and Peter.

While Elvis Presley and Kiss feel like part of two different eras, Elvis was still around to hear the exuberant band before his 1977 death. The members of Kiss have praised the Memphis singer in the past. While Presley never publicly shared support for the band, his stepbrother said the “Heartbreak Hotel” singer became a fan after listening to one of their songs multiple times.

Kiss was formed in New York City in 1973 with Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss. The band became famous with early hits, such as “Nothin’ to Lose” and “Firehouse”. Elvis Presley’s stepbrother, Billy Stanley, was a fan of Kiss, and bought their 1975 live album, Alive!. He was listening to it in the basement of Graceland when Elvis came down to hear Stanley’s new obsession.

Ace Frehley recently gave Paul Stanley a week to apologize for a disparaging comment, but apparently all he got back from the Kiss singer-guitarist was a good old-fashioned “Fuck you!”
To quickly recap, last month Stanley told Howard Stern that a reunion with original Kiss members Frehley and Peter Criss would sound like “Piss.” Frehley, appearing on Eddie Trunk’s SiriusXM show last week, threatened to spill “dirt” on Stanley and Gene Simmons if he didn’t get an apology within seven days.
As promised, Frehley returned to Trunk’s show today (April 5th), a week later, with an update. When asked by Trunk if Stanley responded, Frehley said, “Yes, he did, not long after the show was over. I was blindsided by the phone call. … But instead of an apology, I got a five-second phone call which said, ‘Fuck you, Ace. I’m not going to apologize,’ and hung up.

Ace Frehley has blasted back at Paul Stanley after the latter insinuated that a Kiss reunion with the guitarist and drummer Peter Criss would sound like “Piss.”
In a new interview with SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation with Eddie Trunk, the former Kiss axeman gave Stanley an ultimatum: If he doesn’t receive a formal apology within seven days, he’s going to uncover dirt on Stanley and Gene Simmons publicly.
Frehley is referring to inflammatory remarks made by Stanley during a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show when Stern asked why Kiss didn’t perform at their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2014.
“They were demanding, quite honestly, that we play with the two original guys, Peter and Ace, and at this point, that would be demeaning to the band, and also would give some people confusion,” Stanley said. “‘Cause if you saw people onstage who looked like Kiss but sounded like that,...

New York City has inspired a lot of music. The best songs about New York City include rock ‘n’ roll songs, synth-pop songs, and a classic rap single. Notably, Hall & Oates’ “Maneater” is a song about New York City.

It was the juxtaposition of this great beauty with this foul mouth that really kind of sparked an idea to me that she would chew you up and spit you out.”

Earlier this week, Kiss announced the dates of their final shows ever, culminating with a two-night stand at Madison Square Garden on December 1st and 2nd. Fans wishing that founding members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss will be welcomed back for those last gigs may not want to keep their hopes too high. In a new interview, singer-guitarist Paul Stanley said he thinks the original lineup would sound more like “Piss” than Kiss these days.
Stanley and the rest of the current Kiss lineup — Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer, and Eric Singer — appeared on The Howard Stern Show to announce the band’s final tour dates. As previously reported, the legendary rock act will end its “End of the Road” farewell tour with a fall North American leg (tickets are available here), wrapping up with the two Msg concerts.

The ever-touring rock band Kiss announced today that the road will end where it began: New York City. The iconic rockers, including original members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, will play their final show ever this December at Madison Square Garden.
In a joint statement, the band said, “Kiss was born in New York City. On 23rd Street. Half a century ago. It will be a privilege and honor to finish touring at Madison Square Garden, 10 blocks and 50 years from where we first started.”
The final two shows, both at Msg, will take place on Dec. 1 and Dec. 2 of this year.
The band’s decision to call it quits has long been expected – the name of their current and final tour is The End of the Road Tour – but there had been some question on whether performances would spill over into 2024.

You don’t have to be friends with the people you make music with – but it helps not to be enemies.
The annals of music history are filled with instances of bandmates whose relationships turned sour, from Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel to Morrissey and Johnny Marr.
In one of modern music’s bitterest feuds, former Pink Floyd members Roger Waters and David Gilmour have spent years exchanging vitriolic words in the press. This week, Polly Samson, ex-Pink Floyd lyricist and wife of David Gilmour, made unsubstantiated allegations against Waters online.
Waters wrote on a social media account that he was “aware of the incendiary and wildly inaccurate comments made about him on Twitter by Polly Samson which he refutes entirely”, and said he is “currently taking advice as to his position”.
Of course, plenty of great music has been made by people who were at personal loggerheads – just ask Fleetwood Mac.

This article contains spoilers for Poker Face episode 4.
With a charged reference to the 1976 death of The Yardbirds singer Keith Relf, Peacock’s Poker Face teaches a valuable music industry lesson: Song pluggers should check their cables before plugging in. Especially drummers, surrounded by metallic conductors, trying to break out original material. When they do, as Phil Collins of Genesis or Don Brewer of Grand Funk Railroad can attest, those songs can change the group dynamic and take center stage. Electricity like that should be channeled.
Which is why the human lie-detector goes metal detector in Charlie Cale’s (Natasha Lyonne) case-of-the-week, “Rest in Metal.” The signature hit song for Robin Ruin’s (Chloe Sevigny) metal band Doxxxology, “Staplehead,” was written by the drummer. Said drummer moved on, and not only is the band now stuck with it as the closing song for every show, but they have to pay...

“Tulsa King,” the new Paramount+ drama created by Taylor Sheridan and Terence Winter, is entirely too conventional and workmanlike to be a remarkable series. And yet it is remarkable – and oddly fascinating – for a couple of reasons.
For one thing, “Tulsa King” continues the parabolic rise of Sheridan, a writer-director who has quickly become one of the past decade’s predominant television successes. Once best known for a low-profile main cast role in “Sons of Anarchy,” Sheridan has parlayed a handful of well-received neo-Western films into a burgeoning small-screen empire. In addition to his flagship hit “Yellowstone” and its four spinoffs, Sheridan has built an ever-expanding slate of projects and a storytelling brand as distinct as household names like Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy.
The other fascinating thing about “Tulsa King” is its star, Sylvester Stallone, who at 76 is making his first foray into series television. There’s nothing new...

Ken Kelly, the fantasy artist who created the iconic album covers for Kiss’ Destroyer and Love Gun, has died at the age of 76.
No cause of death was announced. Members of Kiss turned to social media Saturday to pay tribute to the veteran comic book artist who painted two of their most memorable images in the Rock Hall-inducted act’s iconography.
Gene Simmons tweeted Saturday, “Sad to find out Ken Kelly, who painted our Destroyer album cover passed away. A kind and beloved gentleman. Rest In Peace.”

Bittersweet endings are anything but rare on television. Likewise, finding Kiss on television -- especially for the aging rockers amongst us -- has been like discovering bubbles in water for the last five decades.
Gene Simmons' proud stagger and Paul Stanley's powerful pursed lips have frequented screens large and small -- just gravy atop the half century's worth of music the inspiring heavy metal musicians have bestowed throughout Kiss' legacy.
But with Biography: KISStory, a two-night event on A&e, Kiss fans will get to see something they might not be used to.
Paul and Gene spend much of their mini-series interviews inside Electric Lady Studios, where they laid down their first 1973 demo with recording maven Eddie Kramer. The studio was created and opened by Jimi Hendrix in New York.

The Tribeca Festival is bringing back in-person events for its 2021 lineup, and that includes programming typically seen at home. The Tribeca TV lineup will feature nine shows total, consisting of eight series premieres and a season premiere, as well as panel appearances by featured guests Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, Joshua Jackson, Helen Hunt, and more.

Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Rønning to direct based on story of ’70s glam rock band
A music biopic called “Shout It Out Loud” about legendary rock band Kiss is in the works, and Netflix is nearing a deal to acquire the film package, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Joachim Rønning, the Norwegian director behind “Kon-Tiki,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” will direct the film. Kiss’ Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley will collaborate on the project, which spans the band’s story on stage and off. Ole Sanders wrote the latest draft of the script, with a previous draft coming from W. Blake Harron.
Netflix had no comment. A rep for the band said there are ongoing conversations with Netflix but no agreement has been signed.

Exclusive: Netflix is near a deal for Shout It Out Loud, a film package that aspires to do for the iconic hard rock band Kiss what Bohemian Rhapsody did for Queen.

Ace Frehley has never been very open about his political leanings, but that changed in a recent interview with the Cassius Morris Show (via Blabbermouth) when his cover of the Cream song “Politician” from his new LP Origins, Vol. 2 came up.
“I don’t think politics and rock & roll mix — in my opinion,” said the former Kiss guitarist. “And I try to stay away from that as much as I can. I mean, once in a while, I’ll make a crack. I will say I’m a Trump supporter.

Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley embarks on a wild intergalactic adventure in the new animated video for his cover of Deep Purple’s “Space Truckin’.” The track will appear on Frehley’s new album of covers, Origins Vol. 2, out September 18th.
Frehley delivers a faithful take on “Space Truckin’,” cranking up the guitars a bit to give Deep Purple’s pioneering hard rock sound some of the arena rock punch that their successors (like Kiss) would popularize in the late-Seventies/early-Eighties. Frehley recorded the song with drummer Matt Star and keyboard player Rob Sabino.

The UnXplained will premiere on History on July 11, confounding viewers with impossible tales improbably told. But the most inexplicable thing about the paranormal-and-beyond series is its host. William Shatner is not just an actor or a star, he is almost public domain. His breakthrough character, Captain James T. Kirk, was recognized and claimed by popular culture, the counterculture, and the subculture of Star Trek aficionados.
Shatner started his career as a workaholic actor who never said no. He took big and small parts on great TV shows and movies, and awful ones. He’d go on to continue his work in popular TV series with appearances in indie and B-movie films which have become cult classics. Who can forget his creepy crawl up the basement stairs in Kingdom of the Spiders or his pentagram brand and dis-gouged eyes in Devil’s Rain? In their own way, they are as influential...

For some people, a single incident of seeing a UFO—or Unidentified Aerial Phenomena as the Air Force would now like us to say—can be a paradigm shifting moment. Or simply one experience witnessing something move on its own can lead to a quest to determine one’s belief, or lack thereof, in ghosts.
But when you’re Ace Frehley, The Spaceman formerly of Kiss, once is not enough for potentially paranormal phenomena.

Bob Kulick, a guitarist with Kiss, Meat Loaf and Lou Reed, has died at age 70.
His brother, Bruce Kulick (who was also a guitarist for Kiss), posted the news on social media. No cause of death was given.
“I am heartbroken to have to share the news of the passing of my brother Bob Kulick,” Bruce Kulick wrote on Instagram. “His love of music, and his talent as a musician and producer should always be celebrated. I know he is at peace now, with my parents playing his guitar as loud as possible.”
Kulick auditioned for Kiss in 1972, but didn’t get the gig, as Ace Frehley was chosen. But he was brought in five years later to help with the recording of the eighth Kiss album, “Alive II.” He played lead for three songs on the album.
Kulick also worked on the Spongebob Squarepants song Sweet Victory with David Glen Eisley,...
