Exclusive: The Good Doctor is getting a fitting conclusion with one of its most popular characters, Dr. Claire Brown, returning. Original cast member Antonia Thomas, who starred as Claire in the first four seasons of the ABC medical drama, will be back for two episodes in the current seventh season, including the series finale. Another Good Doctor alum, Brandon Larracuente, also will be back reprising his Season 6 character of Dr. Daniel Perez in one episode. Additionally, Ruby Kelley (Push) has joined in a recurring role and Guillermo Diaz (Scandal) will appear in a guest spot.
Thomas’ Dr. Claire Brown, who was Dr. Shaun Murphy’s (Freddie Highmore) closest friend and confidant, departed The Good Doctor at the conclusion of Season 4 to take a job at a medical clinic in Guatemala. The Good Doctor introduces its first-ever medical students in Season 7 Episode 2, airing on Tuesday, February 27 at 10/9c on ABC. Kayla Cromer and Wavyy Jonez make their debuts as Charlie and Dom in “Skin in the Game,” in which Shaun (Freddie Highmore) struggles to accommodate the newest member of his surgical team, Charlie (Cromer), who interferes in a patient’s relationship with his daughter. Elsewhere, Park (Will Yun Lee) tackles a tricky brain tumor, and Lea (Paige Spara) and Morgan (Fiona Gubelmann) adjust to motherhood. Co-showrunner and executive producer Liz Friedman told TV Insider all there is to know about Charlene “Charlie” Lukaitis and Dominick “Dom” Hubank. Charlie and Dom are medical students on their first surgical rotations — eager to learn but raw and untested in the fast-paced world of St. Bonaventure’s Hospital. Charlie, who is also a doctor with autism, idolizes Shaun. But as Friedman previously told TV Insider,...

Dr. Marcus Andrews hasn’t just forfeit his job as president of St. Bonaventure Hospital on ABC’s The Good Doctor. He’s left San Jose behind entirely.

“We’re going to give these characters a great send-off,” assures The Good Doctor executive producer Liz Friedman, referring to the unexpectedly canceled ABC hospital drama’s farewell. “There’s sadness that it’s ending, but we’re glad to have had advance notice to figure out how we end this chapter.” Happily, Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) and his colleagues have 10 episodes left, per Friedman, and Season 7 opens as Shaun and Lea are settling in as parents to newborn Steve. Shaun returns to the Or, “moving through the world now as a doctor and a dad, having attachments to patients that he didn’t before,” Friedman says. The big medical case seen in the premiere is deeply personal for other docs at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital: Eden, the adopted daughter of Morgan (Fiona Gubelmann) who’s also being raised by Park (Will Yun Lee), needs risky heart surgery.

When The Good Doctor returns, it does so on a new night. The Good Doctor Season 7, the farewell season, is premiering on Tuesday, February 20 on ABC. It’s been airing on Monday nights after The Bachelor/The Bachelorette for years. Now, The Good Doctor will air at 10/9c, after Will Trent at 8/7c and The Rookie at 9/8c. Why the change for the final season? Co-showrunner Liz Friedman tells TV Insider it was a network decision to highlight some of its “most successful” shows. “That was about ABC having fewer dramas and really deciding to do a three-hour block of, I think, their most successful procedurals,” Friedman says. “I think it’ll be really nice. I think The Rookie‘s obviously a great, great show with great characters. I love Will Trent, and hopefully it’s just going to be a really good night of viewing for the audience.” “Little crime,...

The Good Doctor didn’t want to end with Season 7, co-showrunner and executive producer Liz Friedman tells TV Insider. The medical drama starring Freddie Highmore is ending with Season 7 because, as Friedman says, “ABC told us it was time to end it.” The Good Doctor stars Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a brilliant surgeon with Autism Spectrum Disorder whose neurodivergent thinking helps him create unexpected solutions to medical conundrums. “Why end it now? Well, ABC told us it was time to end it,” Friedman tells TV Insider. While it’s not ending on their timeline, Friedman is happy the series can end on their terms. “We are very grateful that they told us that in a timely manner, which allows us to decide the terms that we’re going to end it on to craft a great ending and a great culmination of Shaun Murphy’s story, but that’s how that came about,...

This time last year, The Good Doctor was set to continue and was even preparing a spinoff.
However, that all changed earlier this year when ABC decided to end the show after seven seasons.
Even worse?
We’re getting a truncated 10-episode season.
The Good Doctor EP David Shore opened up about the decision to end the series over the weekend during ABC’s portion of the Television Critics Association winter press tour.
While many believed the cancellation came too late in the game to craft a proper conclusion, Shore said the show is lucky enough “to plan the ending we want to do,” according to Deadline.

Why end The Good Doctor? Was it ABC’s decision? Did the show run its course after seven seasons?
Executive Producer David Shore said it was a little bit of both.
“Years ago when I was doing another show, someone asked, ‘do you know how the show is going to end.’ [He said] Yes, I know exactly how this show will end. One day I will get a call from the network,” said Shore during the drama’s panel at Saturday’s Television Critics Tour. “On that show and this show, we’ve been lucky enough to plan the ending we want to do. This has been a weird year. Only doing 10 episodes is unfortunate. [They originally planned for 13]. But being able to go out on your own terms is a blessing.”

Medical drama The Good Doctor will end after the upcoming seventh series, it’s been revealed. Details here.
Freddie Highmore is one of a select few who was able to successfully go from fresh-faced child star, where he headlined Tim Burton’s Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, the underrated August Rush and The Spiderwick Chronicles, to a prolific acting career as an adult. The role that really put Highmore into the big leagues was playing Norman Bates, the younger version of Anthony Perkins’ character from Psycho, in five seasons of Bates Motel.
Immediately following the ending of the show, Highmore moved on to arguably his greatest performance as autistic surgical resident Shaun Murphy in The Good Doctor. Based on a Korean show, writer David Shore developed and adapted it into the English language version, on which he acts as showrunner alongside Liz Friedman.

Original The Good Doctor cast member Chuku Modu is once again a series regular on the ABC medical drama, playing Dr. Jared Kalu.
Modu, who originally returned midway through last season as a recurring, has been promoted to regular for the upcoming seventh season, now in production.
Modu’s surgical resident Dr. Jared Kalu was a breakout character in Season 1. He got into trouble for punching a doctor who had sexually harassed his girlfriend, resident Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas) and ultimately headed to Colorado for a surgeon job.
Kalu eventually left that job to become a concierge doctor, which is how he ended up back at San Jose’s St. Bonaventure Hospital. He ended up sticking around his old stumping grounds.

More fallout from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. ABC has opted not to proceed with The Good Lawyer, its planned legal spinoff from The Good Doctor that was going to be toplined by Kennedy McMann and Felicity Huffman.
The network had delayed pickup decisions on two spinoffs, bubble drama series The Rookie: Feds and the Good Lawyer pilot. Today, the call was made, and neither is moving forward.
The Good Lawyer originated as a Good Doctor planted spinoff, with the backdoor pilot airing as an episode of the hit medical drama last spring. It was well received, with ABC brass high on McMann and Huffman’s performances.
The options on the cast were up August 15. Because of the SAG-AFTRA strike, the hold period was extended for the duration of the work stoppage, so ABC had another month to make a decision on The Good Lawyer.
As Deadline has reported, the longer the strikes went past Labor Day, the longer the odds were for outstanding series to get a pickup. ABC also canceled Home Economics at the end of September.
ABC had planned to launch The Good Lawyer this coming spring as the broadcasting networks are running out of shelf space as they try to accomodate all of their popular returning scripted series.
For that reason, ABC in late September opted to push its only new scripted series, the one-hour High Potential to next fall. That project, starring Kaitlin Olson, is the only ABC 2023 pilot to get a series order.
The Good Lawyer, from Sony Pictures Television and ABC Signature, was written by The Good Doctor co-showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman. In the backdoor pilot episode, Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) seeks legal representation to help him win a case and puts his faith in a promising, young lawyer, Joni DeGroot (McMann) who has obsessive compulsive disorder.

It comes after ABC passed on four of its pilots: Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.
Deadline understands that ABC is unlikely to make all of these decisions until the writers strike is over and the future of the fall season is clearer. A decision on Home Economics may come first out of the three.

ABC continues to shore up its lineup for the 2023-24 season.
The network has picked up a seventh season of its medical drama The Good Doctor, marking the third renewal in as many days for the network. Earlier in the week, ABC renewed The Rookie and Will Trent for 2023-24.
The Good Doctor is also poised to become a franchise, as ABC aired a backdoor pilot for a potential spinoff, titled The Good Lawyer, in March. Should it go to series, it will star Kennedy McMann and Felicity Huffman.
The Good Doctor remains among ABC’s most watched scripted shows, particularly with delayed and cross-platform viewing. The show’s same-day average of 3.3 million viewers jumps to 9.1 million after five weeks of multiplatform viewing, and its rating among the key advertising demographic of adults 18-49 grows nearly sixfold, from 0.32 to 1.85. The actor followed up the hit drama with roles on The 100, Captain Marvel, and The Peripheral.

If broadcast Pilot Season is any indicator, the Peak TV numbers are in for a rude awakening.
A decade ago, ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC collectively ordered an eye-popping 98 comedies and dramas during Pilot Season 2013. That figure, the most since THR began tracking overall volume in 2012, is now considered a relic of the past.
With the Covid-19 pandemic effectively wiping out Pilot Season 2020, the networks were forced to lean into the year-round programming strategy many had discussed but hadn’t really executed. Now, the shift is in full swing as the overall volume of pilots ordered across the five networks is likely to hit another low after they collectively picked up 35 comedies and dramas last season.
What’s more, the economic downturn has also prompted broadcasters to be more selective in how many scripts they buy and which among those will actually get made. Network executives — including new presidents at CBS,...

The Good Doctor has been a compelling and emotionally charged staple for ABC on Monday nights, breaking ground with its depiction of the autistic Dr. Shawn Murphy navigating a prestigious hospital as well as fraught workplace and personal drama.
But the show, which marks its 100th episode Nov. 14, had a long path to air, with Daniel Dae Kim, who bought the rights to the 2013 Korean series of the same name, shopping it for several years before it finally landed with House creator David Shore and Sony Pictures Television.
Now six seasons in, with Golden Globe nominee Freddie Highmore in the starring role, it has been a ratings success (per Nielsen, its season-six premiere rated tops in the 10 p.m. hour in the 18-to-49 demo) and started new conversations about representation of neurodiversity.
Co-showrunners Shore and Liz Friedman, along with Highmore, spoke with THR about the show’s success,...

There was great joy and terrible heartbreak when we last checked into St. Bonaventure Hospital in The Good Doctor. While the long-awaited wedding of Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) and Lea Dilallo (Paige Spara) was being celebrated on the roof, surgery chief Audrey Lim (Christina Chang) and Nurse Villanueva (Elfina Luk) were bleeding out a few floors below after being stabbed multiple times by Villanueva’s abusive ex-boyfriend. Season 6 picks up moments later. “Real adrenaline with real emotional stakes,” co-showrunner Liz Friedman says of the hour. She hints at what comes after. 1. Lim survives, but her life is forever changed. Although Villanueva’s fate is under wraps, Lim returns to her prestigious job, despite “having to deal with a long-term [disability] and seeing how the rest of her life fits around that,” Friedman says. As the season progresses, the night’s traumatic events continue to affect many. 2. Relationships get bumpy. Shaun and...

Sources tell Variety that ABC is developing “The Good Lawyer,” a legal spinoff of the medical drama “The Good Doctor” which stars Freddie Highmore as Dr. Sean Murphy, a surgeon with autism.
“The Good Lawyer” will be introduced as a backdoor pilot during Season 6 of “The Good Doctor,” which is set to premiere in October. Sean finds himself in legal trouble and seeks the services of Joni, a twentysomething defense attorney who has Ocd. Joni, relatively new to her law firm, is funny, eager, self-aware and anxious. She is a skilled lawyer and doesn’t want to be treated differently by others, though her Ocd symptoms affect her personal and professional life. At one point, her firm tries to fire her, after which she is forced to threaten to sue for a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
One higher-up at the firm involved in the firing attempt is Janet,...

The Good Doctor could be getting a spinoff in The Good Lawyer, a legal drama reportedly in development at ABC. The Good Lawyer hails from The Good Doctor executive producers/co-showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman and will feature a female lead. According to Deadline, the spinoff will get a backdoor pilot in The Good Doctor, just like the Niecy Nash-led The Rookie: Feds did in The Rookie. The backdoor pilot will reportedly be The Good Doctor Season 6 Episode 13. Season 6 premieres Monday, October 3 at 10/9c. Like the premise of the original show, in which Freddie Highmore plays Shaun Murphy, a doctor with autism, The Good Lawyer will follow Joni, a brilliant 20-something lawyer living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (Ocd). Joni will be introduced as a defense attorney for Shaun after he finds himself in legal trouble. Joni is described as “funny, eager, self-aware, and a bit anxious.” She got...
