Already a winner of screenplay and audience awards in Israel before it bowed in Venice and Toronto, Longing (Ga’agua) takes an oblique look at the meaning of fatherhood in the story of a middle-aged man who belatedly learns he had a son. The fact that the boy is dead only whets his now unfulfillable desire to be a parent. Writer-director Savi Gabizon (Nina’s Tragedies) daringly explores this premise as an ironic, gently melancholic black comedy, whose twists and turns build to a sobering climax. It’s a charming niche film for adults that pleases while it makes some wise points.

NEW YORK -- American Vantage Media Corp.'s indie distribution banner Wellspring has snapped up North American rights to the feature Nina's Tragedies, by helmer Savi Gabizons. The project was Israel's official Oscar submission last year. Nina's-- which had its U.S. premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, as part of the world cinema section -- centers on a turbulent year in the life of a family living in modern day Tel-Aviv, seen through the eyes of a teenage boy who is smitten with his captivating aunt. Wellsping is planning a theatrical release early next year. The indie shingle has been on a buying spree lately: It sealed a deal over the weekend to acquire another Sundance title, director Jonathan Caouette's Tarnation. (HR 4/12) The Nina's pact was brokered by Wellspring acquisitions head Marie Therese Guirgis, and acquisitions manager Rob Williams. The film was repped by producer Anat Assoulin and Gabizon, who also produced and penned the screenplay.

TEL AVIV, Israel -- Satellite television broadcaster YES pushed local film and TV production to the forefront Wednesday, launching the Israeli Cinema Channel. Hailed as a boost to Israel's fragile filmmaking industry and designed to compete for subscribers with the cable television industry, the channel will provide a home for locally made feature and documentary film and television dramas as well as producing exclusive programming about Israeli Cinema. It is the only channel of its kind locally and will be available as a premium channel to YES's approximately 400,000 subscribers. YES declined to provide further details before the launch. The move comes as the Israeli film industry, traditionally cold-shouldered by local audiences, has recently scored some boxoffice hits with such films as Dover Kosashvilli's Late Marriage, Nir Bergman's Broken Wings and Savi Gavizon's Nina's Tragedies. It also comes in the wake of the successful launch this summer of Music 24, an all-Israeli music channel, which demonstrated viewer appetite for local fare.
