Nicole Garcia and Virginie Efira as mother and daughter in Disney+ series Everything Is Fine Photo: @ Disney+/Thibault Grabherr The role of matriarch is one that rather appeals to Nicole Garcia, one of the grand doyennes of French film and theatre, in both private and professional circumstances.
She has relished her role as head of the family in the Disney+ series Everything Is Fine (Tout va bien) in which her self-help guru character Anne Vasseur is plunged into emotional turmoil when her youngest daughter’s child Rose, seven, falls ill with leukaemia and has to undergo a bone marrow transplant. Exclusive: The Bureau creator Eric Rochant is today formally unveiling his production banner, Maui Entertainment, which has quietly launched with backing from Federation Studios.
In an exclusive interview to announce Maui, Rochant said creative talent “must be at the origin and center” of its projects, with a business model geared towards helping new writers and producers become showrunners. He also revealed he was working on a spy drama and a series with Spanish writer Isabel Coixet.
“I learned from Todd Kessler, who made Damages and Bloodline, that a good series must come from a writer who can explain why he’s the only one who can make a specific show,” said Rochant.
Maui quietly launched last year up with a Disney+ order, for Tout va Bien (Everything is Fine), but today marks its market launch. We can reveal the series is due to launch on November 15.

The American French Film Festival, which had been due to take place in L.A. from October 18 to 22, has been shelved due to the writers and actors strikes.
The Franco-American Cultural Fund (Facf) which oversees the event (formerly known as Colcoa) said it had made the difficult to decision to cancel the 2023 edition after a board meeting.
“The Facf Board of Directors determined this week that it was not possible to continue with business as usual,” the fund said in a statement.

Christophe Honoré has landed quite the cast for his next feature film. Re-teaming with daughter-mother team of Chiara Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve, Honoré also adds Benjamin Biolay, Melvil Poupaud, Nicole Garcia and Fabrice Luchini to the mix. Les inrocks folks confirm (what we had mentioned last week), filming does take place in late August in Paris and it’ll then move to Rome (Marcello Mastroianni’s home turf). We can chalk what will likely be a meta exercise as a Cannes competition hopeful. Les Films Pelléas’ Philippe Martin and David Thion are producing the currently untitled feature.
Honoré will likely take an intimate approach into Chiara Mastroianni’s world tackling identity and possibly the splitting of two personas — he is in a good position to do so as he has worked with the actress on six prior occasions – their last collaboration being the Un Certain Regard Best Actress awarded for...

French film legend Catherine Deneuve will be front and center at the Cannes Film Festival as the subject of the official poster for its 76th edition.
The shot of a young Deneuve in 1968 standing on the Pampelonne beach, near Saint Tropez, as the cameras roll on La Chamade by director Alain Cavalier is the iconic photo for the poster this year. The French romantic drama had Deneuve playing Lucile, the mistress of a wealthy man who misses the material comforts of life when she leaves him for a younger lover.
“Her heart beats frantically, hurriedly, passionately. Like the heart of cinema that the Festival de Cannes celebrates every year,? Cannes organizers said of the poster in a statement.
Côte d’Azur, 1968.
The iconic Catherine Deneuve embodies what cinema should never stop being: elusive, daring, irreverent. Here is the poster of the 76th Festival de Cannes. From May 16 to 27, let's celebrate the love of cinema.

The woman at the centre of the subtle but cathartic One Fine Morning is cursed by her consciousness. Try as she might, she can’t escape the fact that she’s ultimately alone, trapped in her own head, and tied through her actions to each and every person around her. It’s a torturous existence. Sandra (Léa Seydoux), a young widow, cares for her eight-year-old daughter. She also cares for her father Georg (veteran actor Pascal Greggory), whose sight is mostly gone and whose memory is crumbling away due to a neurodegenerative disease. At work, as a translator, she patiently reinterprets the words of strangers, or guides American World War Two veterans back down the paths of their old traumas.
She has carved up and rationed out every last part of her heart. There’s no more left for her own use, as she’s forced to admit: “I just...

This review originally ran May 20, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Throughout her career, Mia Hansen-Løve has returned to a familiar milieu — the daily lives of women, drawing out a poignant beauty and humanist sense of drama in the quotidian rhythms of mothers as they go about their work, as well as their caretaking of children, parents and their own inner worlds.
There’s something fascinating, and indeed feminist, about simply watching these women, played by some of Europe’s most talented actresses, simply exist in the world, maintaining the delicate balance of day-to-day harmony despite the larger ups and downs that threaten to upend everything.
In “One Fine Morning,” Hansen-Løve’s latest, the woman in question is Sandra, played by Léa Seydoux, hair cropped into a pixie cut, clad in the jeans, sweatshirt and backpack befitting a young widowed mother caring for her daughter,...

"I'd have never thought that it was possible between us." Sony Pictures Classics has revealed an official US trailer for an acclaimed French drama titled One Fine Morning, the latest film from the talented director Mia Hansen-Løve. This first premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and it also screened at the Sydney, Telluride, Toronto, San Sebastian, and Zurich Film Festivals in the fall. With her father suffering from dementia, a young French woman lives with her eight-year-old daughter. Léa Seydoux stars as Sandra Kienzler, with Pascall Greggory, Melvil Poupard, Nicole Garcia, and Camille Leban Martins. This is much more intimate, low key film from Hansen-Løve, with less of a narrative and more of a look at this woman's life at this...

The permanence of love, passion, and marital stability is often questioned in the directorial offerings and screenplays of French filmmaker Mia Hansen-Løve. Blending the familiar themes and the photography of "Things to Come" and "Goodbye First Love," is Hansen-Løve's "One Fine Morning" which is effused with the creator's motif of plain shots and featherweight dramatic touches that serves to enhance, not dilute nor cheapen, its emotional focuses in 35mm. This has worked in Hansen-Løve's craft because she lets the emotions unravel naturally as players process their fate and their drudgery.
In conjunction with Hansen-Løve's usual collaborators, the cinematographer Denis Lenoir and editor Marion Monnier, the aesthetic of "One Fine Morning" is just as un-fancied as the editing and the cinematography. But those have been assets to her work in favor of gleaning humanity and the brisk pace of life. Like in her previous works, director Hansen-Løve has a gentleness when...

Every time there is a new Juliette Binoche performance it’s a hearty reminder that she is probably our greatest living actor. The new thriller Who You Think I Am, directed by Safy Nebbou, permits the star to show off a bit. With each passing scene the actress seems to be challenging herself to do more with less. Then, out of nowhere, a monologue in the middle of the film knocks your socks off. The picture ultimately reveals itself to be a masterclass in performance.
Binoche plays Claire, a professor recently dumped by her young lover Ludo. A woman scorned, she creates a fake social media profile in order to friend her ex. Posing as a 24-year-old blonde, Claire is soon in intimate online communication with Alex (François Civil), Ludo’s best friend. Rejuvenated by this fresh, passionate mutual attraction, she finds it harder and harder to break the spell...

An acting showcase bursting out of a vaguely intriguing critique of technology and sexism, the erotic and suspenseful “Who You Think I Am” is proof that the great French actress Juliette Binoche should never be ignored. Which is also a way of hinting that “Fatal Attraction” is one of the cultural reference points in this story of a lovelorn middle-aged single mom adopting a fake online persona to burrow her way into the romantic consciousness of an unsuspecting younger man.
Binoche may not be the first name you’d think of for a catfishing scenario, unless it were the other way around, and the deceiver was, say, some unhygienic shut-in surrounded by pizza boxes. But in Safy Nebbou’s elegantly compelling adaptation of Camille Lauren’s novel, which he co-wrote with frequent Arnaud Desplechin collaborator Julie Peyr, it’s the radiant Binoche pulling the strings, and she sells this high-wire...

Juliette Binoche has a field day and then some in Who You Think I Am, an insidiously smart, multi-layered yarn that shrewdly plays with the possibilities that modern media offers for presenting alternate versions of oneself publicly and especially privately.
Author Camille Laurens got her finger firmly on the pulse of the times with her best-selling 2016 novel and director Safy Nebbou has followed up with a sharp adaptation which, despite being delayed by two years since its French opening pre-Covid, will still speak very clearly to American audiences due to its wicked, smarty-pants take on modern communication and relationships. Cohen Media Group will release theatrically in New York and LA, along with a few other markets, on September 3 before adding more on September 10.
Miraculously resisting what Marguerite Duras called “the thrust of time,” Binoche plays Claire, a woman who looks to be perhaps 40 rather than the actress’ real age of 57. In the event,...

"We float in the virtual." Cohen Media has released an official US trailer for a French romantic drama titled Who You Think I Am, made by filmmaker Safy Nebbou. This premiered back in 2019 at the Berlin Film Festival and played at a number of film festivals that year and it also opened in Europe that year. Now it's finally getting a US release after all this time. Adapted from a novel, Juliette Binoche stars as a 50-year-old divorced teacher who creates a fake online persona of a beautiful 24-year-old woman. But, of course, she becomes trapped by her deceit when she falls for a man who has become smitten with her profile. The cast includes Nicole Garcia, François Civil, Marie-Ange Casta, Guillaume Gouix, Charles Berling, and Jules Houplain. An intriguing idea for a love story, and certainly very French, questioning whether age really matters when it comes to romance. I...

Let’s start the week with some exceptionally good news: Screen Daily report Mia Hansen-Løve is about to wrap production on her new new feature One Fine Morning, a romantic drama starring Léa Seydoux, Melvil Poupaud, Pascal Greggory, and Nicole Garcia. Sales will be underway at Cannes next week, with Les Films du Losange and Mubi repping the title.
A story of watching loved ones grow older and weaker, One Fine Morning stars Seydoux as “a young woman living with her eight-year-old daughter in a small apartment in Paris, whose father is suffering from a neurodegenerative disease. As she struggles with the labyrinthine process of securing proper care and a decent nursing home for her father, she runs into an old lost friend. Although he is already in a relationship, they embark on a passionate affair.” Hansen-Løve to the nth degree!

Barcelona-based film-tv studio Filmax has acquired international sales rights to Cesc Gay’s new comedy “Stories Not to Be Told,” which is currently shooting.
Filmax will also handle Spanish distribution to the latest outing from Gay, whose 2021 Goya Awards contender “The People Upstairs,” has sold to major territories in Europe and North America.
Written by Gay and regular co-scribe Tomás Aragay “(“In The City,” “Truman”), Gay’s ninth feature is produced by Marta Esteban at Imposible Films and backed by Spanish pubcaster Tve, Movistar Plus and Catalan pubcaster Tvc.
The film takes in five comedic tales that criss-cross at random and focus on the emotions of the main characters, Gay said, adding that the stories are “told with a lot of rhythm and action and characterized by acerbic, yet tongue-in-cheek tone, as the title suggests.”
The short stories are sparked by a chance meeting, the suffering of public humiliation or an absurd decision.

Update, 02/11, 06:27Am: Dominique Boutonnat, president of France’s Cnc (National Cinema Center), has been indicted on charges of sexual assault and attempted rape made by his godson, the public prosecutor’s office in Parisian suburb Nanterre said today.
The news, reported by Bfm TV, is an escalation on yesterday’s story that Boutonnat was being questioned by police in relation to the allegations that were made in October.
His accuser’s lawyer told Afp that the indictment was a necessary step in establishing the truth as well as protecting her 22-year-old client. Boutonnat’s lawyer criticized the move, saying it was a hasty decision and that the facts were “disputed”. Boutonnat, via his lawyers, yesterday denied the allegations.

Netflix’s Lupin is primed to set a global benchmark for a French series on the service with 70M households projected to watch the five-parter through its first 28 days. That’s bigger than other recent English-language hit series Bridgerton (projected at 63M) and The Queen’s Gambit (62M actuals). The Omar Sy-starrer made its Netflix debut on January 8, and quickly became the first French series to land on the streamer’s U.S. Top 10 list.
It easily launched to No. 1 across in France and remains in that position today. Netflix reports it has also ranked No. 1 in Brazil, Vietnam, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Sweden and many other countries. Lupin is 93% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Intouchables’ Sy stars as Assane Diop who uses the world famous gentleman thief and master of disguise, Arsène Lupin, as his inspiration. The French original from Gaumont Télévision is created by George Kay in collaboration with François Uzan (Family Business) and is a contemporary adaptation of the novels penned by French writer Maurice LeBlanc, who created the character in 1905. The books have been adapted into dozens of TV series and movies over the years.
Since the release of the series, the original Leblanc book has regained interest internationally with it now trending on many marketplaces in France, Italy, Spain, the U.S., UK, Korea and others. Just yesterday, French national news radio, FranceInfo, featured the show as part of its daily kids program, FranceInfo Junior, bringing in an Arsène Lupin scholar to educate the youngsters on the character’s origins.
Set in Paris — and making slick use of the city’s locations — Lupin’s first five-part series, Dans L’Ombre D’Arsène (In The Shadow Of Arsène), introduces Sy’s Diop who, as a teenager, saw his life upended when his father died after being accused of a crime he didn’t commit. Now, Diop is out to avenge his father, and outwit pretty much everyone along the way.
Louis Leterrier directs episodes 1-3 with Marcela Said (Narcos) on 4-5. Also starring are Hervé Pierre, Nicole Garcia, Clotilde Hesme, Ludivine Sagnier, Antoine Gouy, Shirine Boutella and Soufiane Guerrab. Isabelle Degeorges and Nathan Franck are producers.
Here’s Sy celebrating the news:
70 millions, that's insane!!

Netflix’s Lupin made its debut on the service Friday January 8, and quickly became the first French series to land on the streamer’s U.S. Top 10 list. It entered the overall list at No. 8 and was No. 6 on the U.S. series list on Saturday, before jumping up to No. 3 on both rosters Sunday (it’s No. 1 in France and elsewhere). Netflix began sharing Daily Top 10 lists last February.
The Intouchables’ Omar Sy stars as Assane Diop who uses the world famous gentleman thief and master of disguise, Arsène Lupin, as his inspiration.

While the coronavirus pandemic put a halt to both the Cannes and Telluride film festivals, seen as essential stops on the road to awards season glory, both the Venice and Toronto film festivals are going ahead.
For its 77th celebration of film that starts September 2, the Venice Film Festival will open with Daniele Luchetti‘s drama “Lacci,” the first Italian film to kick off the event in 11 years. While “Lacci” is not competing for the Golden Lion, which was won by “Joker” last year, one title to keep an eye on is “Nomadland,” directed by Chloe Zhao (“The Rider”). The drama starring two-time Oscar-winning Best Actress Frances McDormand will premiere on September 11 at Venice and Toronto.

While the coronavirus pandemic has canceled major festivals such as Cannes and Telluride, the 2020 Venice Film Festival is moving ahead as planned and will be the world’s first major film festival since Sundance and Berlin at the start of the year. Venice 2020’s main selection will be split into three sections: Venezia 77 (aka the main competition), Out of Competition, and Horizons. The titles selected for the main competition will compete for the Golden Lion, which was awarded last year to Todd Phillips’ “Joker.”
As previously announced, Daniele Luchetti’s drama “Lacci” will open the 77th Venice Film Festival on September 2. The movie is the first Italian title to open Venice in 11 years. The last Italian opener was Giuseppe Tornatore’s “Baarìa” at the 2009 festival. “Lacci” is included in this year’s Out of Competition section. Chloe Zhao’s “The Rider” follow-up “Nomadland” was also confirmed for a world premiere...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the most overlooked and/or underrated movie of 2017?

Despite the critical praise, “A Fantastic Woman” only a one-week qualifying run last month, and I worry is it’ll easily be forgotten this awards season. Daniela Vega gives one of the most astounding performances I’ve seen this year, one that comes from somewhere fierce and internal, portraying the life and struggle of a trans woman that cinema has rarely shown an interest in exploring. But since you can’t see it until it has a proper release in Febraury, do check one of the year’s other...
