In 1941 he posthumously awarded a Gold Medal by the Marine Corps League State Commandant. This made him an honorary member of the Marine Corp. This had never been done before.
Lost his left eye as one of three wounds he received at the Battle of Belleau Wood during World War I. He was a journalist but was attempting to save a wounded U.S. Marine.
He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Radio at 1631 Vine Street in Hollywood, California.
